Parental control and Dock settings

Please Help : my son's sessions are under parental control but open to set dock preferences and allowed to use System Preferences as far as settings are opened for them.
But anyway, one has Questions marks in place of applications shortcuts, and the other one loose his shortcuts.
Even if we put back the applications shortcuts they want and are allowed of course, we loose evry things after closing and openning the session. Many other settings are no saved also
Why
Looks like Snow leopard is something that we could call a M... ?????
Thank for help.

It works well if they are allwed to run the application they choose.
In fact, I don't know the origin of this trouble, but I did trash their dock preferences plist file
and I reshape it their after, and it works well now.
I still have one other problem, which looks like the previous but a bit different:
When they add a shortcut on the left part of the finder window, done through finder preferences, like adding the house of their home folder,
it doesn't stay after leaving and re entering the session.
Do you know what could happen ?
Thanks

    Make that four.
If you have any commercially advertised/available antivirus software installed on your Mac, completely uninstall this per the instructions on the AV developer's website.
Antivirus software can slow down the normal operation of OS X and can negatively affect OS X performance and operation.
Do you have apps like MacKeeper or any other maintenance apps like CleanMyMac 1 or 2, TuneUpMyMac or anything like these apps, installed on your Mac? These types of apps, while they appear to be helpful, can do too good a job of data "cleanup" causing the potential to do serious data corruption or data deletion and render a perfectly running OS completely dead and useless leaving you with a frozen, non-functional Mac.
Plus, these type of apps aren't really necessary. They really aren't.
There are manual methods to clear off unnecessary data off of your Mac that are safer and you have complete control over your Mac and not just leave a piece of auto cleaning software in charge of clearing off data off of your Mac.
Their potential of causing OS X issues outweighs the implied good and benefits these types of hard drive or memory "cleaning" apps are written to do.
Plus, the software companies that write these apps make it hard to easily uninstall these apps if something DOES go wrong and these apps work in a way where you have no recovery or revert function to return your Mac back to its former, working state in the event something does go wrong.
It is best to never, EVER download and install these types of apps.
The risk to your system and data is too great a risk!
Search the web to learn how to correctly and properly uninstall these kinds of apps.
    They all uninstall differently.

  • Snow Leopard Parental Controls and iChat (Can't see iChat anymore)

I enabled Parental Controls on my daughters profile. I left applications to unrestricted access, and unrestricted access to web sites (but I still review the log)... I selected to LIMIT iChat and then added the people she can chat with (she's 8).
The problem is, it looks like iChat is online. It's in her dock. Has the little white light dot on underneath the app but I can't see the chat window. You know, where you actually double click on someone to chat with? What gives???
When I go to iChat preferences and on the Accounts tab, "enable this account" is not checked, but it's grayed out so I can't check it!!

It seemed to crop up in Leopard with the first Parental Controls and has yet to be "sorted" in Snow Leopard.
I tend to think it is because Parental Control Updates are out of Step with iChat ones but I have no real insight as to the cause.

If you have a rescue email address (which is not the same thing as an alternate email address) on your account then the steps on this page will give you a reset link on your account : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT6170
If you don't have a rescue email address (you won't be able to add one until you can answer your questions) then you will need to contact Support in your country to get the questions reset.
Contacting Apple about account security : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5699
When they've been reset (and if you don't already have a rescue email address) you can then use the steps on this page to add a rescue email address for potential future use : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5620
Or, if it's available in your country, you could change to 2-step verification : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5570

  • IChat, Parental Control and Bonjour

Rather than using AIM (and it's slowness), I was hoping to be able to use Bonjour on our internal network (which is firewalled and, obviously, not a threat) to chat/audio conference with our youngest.
I used the parental control to limit his AIM partners to the family but still wanted to allow him to talk on our network in the house. Unfortunately, when I go into iChat via his account the "using Bonjour instant messaging" is grayed out.
I tried turning it on in iChat on his account, going to my admin account and THEN enabling parental control, and trying again but no dice.
    Any ideas?
Sure would be nice for home networks to have the option to iChat with everyone at Bonjour vs. AIM speeds (doubly so if you are on dialup!).

    hi James,
Well I read this and thought "he can't be right" ?
    So I went to test
Enabled Parental Controls and for iChat and Added one AIM/@mac buddy.
Looked for ability to add Bonjur or Jabber accounts but found nothing
Went to log in to that account.
Check to see if Bonjour window was available. Nope.
Checked iChat Preferences >Accounts and could not select Bonjour.
Took off Parental Controls - Appears in iChat, Bonjour and Jabber windows.
Selecting and deselecting Parental Control Logs iChat in and out of AIM.
I must admit to thinking this is a big Opps by Apple

  • WHERE ARE "DESKTOP" AND "DOCK" SETTINGS STORED?

I want to backup my desktop and dock settings. Where are they stored so that I can do this?
    Thx.
    Mike

If you are backing up your home folder, you are also backing up your user prefs all of which are stored in "Your User Name"/Library/Preferences. There are several other "Preferences" folders that contain "global" prefs, namely /Library/Preferences and /System/Library/Preferences.
One potential "trap" though... corrupted prefs files are often the cause of anomalous system behavour so saved prefs should be copied back into new folders with caution.

  • Enabling parental controls and keeping icons on desktop

I turn on parental controls and after logging out and back in the app icons on the desktop all disappear and I can't find them anywhere. Any thoughts?

Hi, every user's Desktop is different & Unique.
Check the preferences & see if you chose Simple Finder for instance, & which apps the Managed account is allowed to use.

  • Backup Finder and Dock settings?

What files do I need to include in my Backup app backup plan, to preserve my finder and dock settings in case of crash?

I found this thread looking for a solution to a Dock issue. Something odd is happening on my Mac Pro—with every restart, my Dock is reduced to a meagre 4 programs and even when I repopulate it with the 15 or so items I like to have in there, they're gone at the next reboot.
I looked for com.apple.dock.db, com.apple.finder.plist, and com.apple.dock.plist in my home/library/preferences folder, none are there. Is there anywhere else they are stored?

  • BT Yahoo Parental Controls and I-tunes

    Hello all,
I’ve had a number of problems with my children’s Ipod Nano’s.
We are running windows XP professional, with BT yahoo broadband. We have the pc set up so that there are different users. Me and my children each have their own account.
My children are 8 and 11 years old and as a result I have the BT yahoo broadband parental controls in place. The parental controls are in place and set to '‘kids’ setting.
I want my children to be able to use itunes to put their CD’s on and subsequently sync them to the ipod.
However the minute I open itunes on my children’s account, BT yahoo brings up an error message that says BT Yahoo will not allow itunes.exe to run due to parent controls.
I cant seem to give my children permission to use itunes as its not a website I am giving permission too but an .exe file. I don’t want to decrease the parental controls settings on BT yahoo. Can anyone help as my children have two ipods that they cannot use at the moment, useless they use my account and remove the items that are in my itunes library.
Any help would be much appreciated.
    Kris

This sounds like it a problem with BT Yahoo parental controls rather than a "Connecting your iPod to Windows" problem which is where you've posted. I doubt if you'll get much practical help with your issue here, but to improve your chances you might like to consider posting to a more general and appropriate discussion (e.g. "Using iTunes for Windows" or "Installing & Upgrading iTunes for Windows"). As it is the BT Yahoo restrictions which is restricting iTunes you're probably going to get better advice from a BT Yahoo helpdesk. You might like to double check that you've not made a typo when entering the info into parental controls.

  • I was trying to set parental controls and somehow lost the abitlity to sign in as adminstrator. When I try to reset using my OSX CD, it says I need to install Rosetta before I can reinstall MacOSX. I say yes, but it asks for my administrator ID/password

Somehow lost my ability to login as administrator when i was trying to set up Parental Controls. Now it does not recognize my administrator name or password. When I try to reset my password by reinstalling MacOSX, it tells me I have to first install Rosetta. When I say yes, it asks for my administrator name and password!  ARG!  Help please!

Whew, let's see if we can trick it into making a new admin account...

  • HT1904 parental controls and shared libraries

We're slowly migrating towards having all our music and movies in iTunes.
One item that's crutial to this migration is proper parental controls, especially with shared libraries. They seem to work well on the kids iTouch devices and hide the content that's higher than their allowed rating level.
However, on my daughter's computer (Vista SP2 with iTunes 11.0.2), the shared libraries with content higher than her allowed rating are visible and can be started, even when the parental controls are enabled.
    What am I doing wrong?
    Thanks,
    Eric

It seems that the parental controls only apply to iTunes store, not the iTunes library?
Correct; parental controls do indeed only apply to iTunes Store purchases.
The only reasonable workaround I can think of that the kids can't easily get around to have separate iTunes libraries, one for the adults in the house and one from the kids.

  • Main parental control and Entourage

I set up my child's e-mail with parental controls in Mail. As expected, the messages from "unauthorized" senders are forwarded to my e-mail address. But I use Entourage and I can't figure out how to authorize the appropriate messages. Do I have to switch my account to Mail as well?

Parental control only works with Mail. I wish Apple documented the Parental features better.

  • I used the parental controls and now safari won't appear on the children's desktop.

Can anybody help please?? I created a separate user account for my children so I could control their time on the computer as well as what websites they visit and now when they log in, Safari is not present on their dashboard nor can they access the internet.  Anybody have any ideas?
    Thanks.

  • Mac 10.5 Parental Controls and ASR= Lockup *Problem*

I'm a lab admin at a school and trying to upgrade the OS in my lab (all Macbooks) to 10.5. I made an image with 4 accounts and on the "student" account I used the built in Parental Controls to limit the user.
I used ASR to image 3 machines as a test run for the rest of the lab to make sure that I wasn't going to have any hick-up's.
On all three of the machines the "student" account locks up when you attempt to log-in. (i.e. you get the log-in screen, click on the "student" account, and the computer will not respond.)
I am able to log-in to the other accounts I created so I deleted the "student" account and made a new "student" account with the Parental Controls enabled. After logging out of the admin account and attempting to log-in to the new account I received the same results (the computer locks up).
I deleted that account and attempted to enable Parental Controls on one of the other working accounts that I had originally set up. I received the same results.
Is there anyway to fix this with-out installing 10.5 on each workstation individually??

    >I know you don't work for Adobe, but have you heard from an Adobe technician saying that they are aware of this problem for the Mac
No I have not gotten any acknowledgment of this nor heard of an acknowledgment of the similar problem on Windows. The holidays are probably what is keeping them. I ran into this problem when exporting a big folder of images that had lots of brushes and gradients applied and had some enormous (>500 MB files) images in it using my MBP with 4 gigs of memory. I tested it a little and noticed when following Lightroom's memory usage that when I exported the exact same set of images mutliple times, it would keep climbing its memory usage in the 64-bit version and eventually start making the computer beach ball and run like molasses. When I did the same thing in the 32-bit version, the memory usage returned to the same level after each export and it never did the running slow like molasses thing. The same thing happens when I generate 1:1 previews for a large folder. The 64-bit version bogs down, while the 32-bit version keeps working normally.

  • Lion Parental Controls and secure sites

This is driving me and my son mad. Since "upgrading" to Lion from SL every time he visits a site that uses https an alert box appears saying it needs to be added to Parental Controls, or you click OK to continue. Is there any way to return to the SL way of doing things?
    Thanks in advance.

Nobody? Looks like we are stuck with this then. Nice one Apple, why can't you leave stuff alone if it works?
