Parental control - how to limit internet time

Anyone got any advice on how to limit internet access time to a shorter time than the full amount of computer time set in Parental Controls. My 14 year old wastes most of her computer time surfing stuff of little value. I am happy for her to still have daily computer time but don't want it all used up on the net. I want to encourage her to use some of the more creative potential of the Mac i.e Garageband, iMovie - she used to - she is very creative but gets sucked into other stuff very easily.
Are there any add-ons that I should consider?
Any advice gratefully received.

If you use a Time Machine connected to your router, you can limit the time on that and when it can kick certain devices of the internet between certain times.
I would happy to go through the set up of this with you if you would like.
Other than that there maybe some add-ons / free software however if she's clever enough she could disable them.
I hope this helps

How do I use Airport Extreme to limit internet time for my kids?  His computer is hardwired to the modem.

You can set up daily time limits for each computer that connects using wireless, but it is not possible to do this when a computer is connecting directly using a wired Ethernet connection.
Open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility on your Mac and click Manual Setup
Click the Access Control tab below the icons
    Select Timed Access
For more details on this, click the Help menu at the top of the screen and enter the following phrase into the search box:

A more sophisticated approach would be to use a service provided by OpenDNS. From your computer, this would allow you to monitor web sites visited, and block any unsuitable sites. More info is here:

  • Parental Control, how can I know the remaining time (from command line)

    Hello,
I did setup Parental Control on my kid's iMac.
I configured a "Weekday Time Limit". On their desktop, they can get the information about the remaining time by clicking simply on the clock.
I would like to know how I can get this information while I am connected via ssh
    Thank you in advance.

Apparently all the Parental Controls preferences files are stored here:
    /Library » Application Support » Apple » ParentalControls » Users » username
I imagine somewhere in there it keeps a record of the remaining time etc.  You'll need root authority to access Users onwards.

  • How to limit access time to internet (iPAD2)?

I want to limit usage time (access time) to internet with iPAD2.  There seems to be no setup for restriction of usage time with iPAD2.  Is there a way app or software or fucntion in Airport to control access by a certain device to the Time Capsule?  Thanks.

The Timed Access feature on the Time Capsule will allow you to set specific daily time limits for any wireless device that is connected.
Open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
    Click Manual Setup
    Click the Access Control tab
for MAC Access Control, select Timed Access
For details about this, click Help at the top of the screen and then click AirPort Utility Help.  Enter the following phrase in the Help search box:

  • Parental control - disk access limit

i work in a university department with about 40 students sharing 8 macs. some of them work with video and audio as part of their studies. only a couple of them could be called experienced. we've created separate accounts for all of them.
the problem is that the startup disk fill up very quickly. buying more hd space would not solve the problem, but i do try to teach them some 'file hygiene'. at the same time i want to totally strip down their access to the startup disk, only allowing them to store to their personal external drives.
i'm looking at parental control and reduced finder, but can't figure a way to remove the 'documents' and 'shared' folders from the dock.
    is there another way?

Well... You should be mounting their home directories off of network storage and using quotas. Network storage, though slower, means that they only have data in one place and they aren't leaving stuff on the local machines (they can even work locally can copy it when done, and you can have something cleanup when they log out).
Here's how to implement user disk quotas in OS X: http://www.secure-computing.net/wiki/index.php/HFS%2BDiskQuotas
Most of the various network storage options you have will permit you to set disk quotas as well. NAS devices tend to offer this feature, as do most commonly used operating systems used for file servers (FreeBSD, Linux, Mac OS X, even lowly Windows).

  • Parental Controls-How can I allow login to email sites?

How can I setup parental controls to allow access to Google and to Yahoo for email? When I set those sites up in Parental Controls> Website restrictions> Try to limit access to adult websites automatically> Customize> "Allow these websites" list in admin account's Preferences, the child is unable to login to his email pages in his account side of the Mac. Only when I select to "Allow unrestricted access to websites" can he login to his email pages. When it refuses to let him login, the error message in Safari reads:
    Safari can’t open the page.
Safari can’t open the page “https://www.google.com/accounts/Login?hl=en&continue=http://www.google.co.uk/” because Safari can’t establish a secure connection to the server “www.google.com”.
How can I restrict access to adult sites but still allow access to his email sites and other sites?
Thank you in advance for ay help offered.

    No longer na issue.

  • Parental Controls - How do I find what apps are starting for an account?

I turned on Parental Controls for my kids and when they log into their accounts they get a series of dialogs saying "You don't have permission to run <APP>, with Done, Always Allow and Allow Once buttons. Things like GoogleUpdater. None of these apps are in their startup list in System Preferences. How can I find what apps are set to startup for each account?
    - Thanks

Here's a tip from another user that may help you:
"I was running into the same problem trying to find apps for my daughters Iphone 3g running 4.2.1.  What I did was go to the Itunes store through Itunes on my PC, and then went to the bottom of the main page and clicked "Browse." On the browse page I selected, App Store, Games (category), Kids (subcategory), and then a list of apps appears below.
I sorted by date (oldest to newest) by right-clicking next to "price" and choosing "release date" on the menu that pops up. The date created field will then be showing, which you can click on to sort newest to oldest or oldest to newest.  I downloaded a bunch of free apps starting from the oldest (by name - you don't have much else to go on).  Of the 30 or so I added to my Itunes, about 27 of them were compatible with 4.2.1.
This is defintely not a perfect way of finding apps, but after spending a lot of time searching for a better way this was the best I could come up with."

  • IPhone 5: alarm keep on ringing: how to limit the time it rings

I am new to iPhone, and just got my iPhone 5.
How can I limit the time the alarm rings (to 30 secs or 1 min), it does not stop ringing until I turn it off.  My old cellphone (not smart phine) does that.
Problem is, when I left my iPhone some place and the alarm goes off, it will keep on ringing (and drain the battery).
    Thank you.
or is there an APP that does this?

Great! Finally someone is trying to show how we can use the great Time Capsule drive for both doing (scheduled backups) and other things.
I have tried your solution, but are having problems in step 3) when trying to create a new sparsebundle directly on the Tiem Capsule share.
I have carefully prepared after your instructions the line - draggin also the Time Capsule volume to finish the line :
hdiutil create -size 200g -fs HFSX -volname BakJohn/Volumes/Time Capsule-1/John24GHzPBCoreDuo_XXXecXXbcXXX.sparsebundle
    (X = numbers)
After hitting ENTER this message comes:
hdiutil: create failed - No such file or directory
Do you have any ideas or suggestions?
    But gets this error message

  • How to limit Query Time?

    Hello -
How can I limit a query to run for only 30 seconds? I created a profile named LIMIT_CPU. I then put a resource limit on this profile for the CPU/Call to have a value of 3000. I assigned my user to this profile, ran the query, and I never can limit the time to 30 seconds.
Any help with this is greatly appreciated!
    Thanks,
    Mike

You cannot do that at least using resource profiles. You can limit CPU time or I/O using resource profiles. Also remember that CPU_per_call and logical_reads_per_call means - if you get at least one row back in allowable limits Oracle resets the counter and starts again i.e. from Oracle docs: "CPU_PER_CALL Specify the CPU time limit for a call (a parse, execute, or fetch), expressed in hundredths of seconds". The same applies for logical_reads_per_call.
I have succesfully used these limits setting some sensible value for one of our OLTP app. It mostly was necessary for searching - if a user gives some very bad criteria, then prevent him to slow down all other users. CPU_per_call and logical_reads_per_call together with maximum returned record count (tipically 100) for search works very well for us and the message we give to user in case he exceeds the limit is something very general - "your search query exceeded allowable resource limits".

  • How to limit internet access in dpc3925

    Hi all,
I have dpc3925 router and I want to restrict the time of internet access to a certain laptop.. I know it can be done... Plese help me how to do it... Appriciate thevhelp in advance....

That is how the gateway is designed. As for the other software that you can use for restricting the laptop, you can try searching the net but I doubt it will work since the laptop is connected to the gateway’s network and it’s only thru the gateway that you can restrict that laptop at certain times to connect to the internet.

  • Parental controls - how can I remove the preview of apps on the iTouch that aren't appropriate?

We recently bought 2 itouches for our 8 and 10 year old -- how can I remove the preview of inappropriate apps from showing up on their screens?  I've set the security of apps at age 4+, but the previews are still showing up?  Any advice on how to remove?

The only thing I can think of is to restrict the App Store.

  • How to limit cpu time spent on javasctipt webworkers?

There are some pages that compute things using javascript webworkers (sample page: http://jscomputing.pl/compute.php).
Is there any way to limit such computing? A warning window with kill button is more than I need :)
I've searched plugins database but didnt find anything...

There are some articles about workers on MDC:

I don't know if it possible to terminate such a background task.
Maybe someone at the mozillaZine Web Development/Standards Evangelism forum has ideas about if it is possible to do this.<br />

  • How to limit search time for high etimes

We are seeing an issue where some searches are hitting a ceiling of 120 sec which is causing problems downstream in other applications. If the search were to timeout sooner the problems could be handled a bit more gracefully by the other pieces in the puzzle. Is this a tunable option in sunone v5.2? Is this done via the console, or a conf file?

You can set this with the "nsslapd-timelimit" attribute of cn=config.
    This is documented here:
    http://docs.sun.com/source/817-7616/config.html
This setting is effective for all users who bind to the server.
You can also set this per-user (rather than server-wide) by adding a nsTimeLimit attribute to individual accounts.
    This is documented here:
    http://docs.sun.com/source/817-7613/useracct.html#wp19772

  • Parental Controls time limit ends too soon

For Time Limits in Parental Controls, how does OS X decide when the account is in use?
I setup a managed account for my son on a MacBook Pro running 10.6.8.
It is set to 3 hour limit on weekdays.
Problem is that sometimes the timer gives its usual 15-minute warning after less than one hour of use.
Sometimes I do a fast user switch to my admin account. Later that day he does fast user switch back to his account.
Does the time in my account after fast user switch pause his timer?
I hope the timer can be paused without completely logging out of the account.
    Thank you.

in the parental controlled account click on the time in the menu bar and it will show time remaining in the pull down menu.
