Parental control problem printing to a shared printer

Hello chaps,
Here's an annoying one.
Two Macs, both running OS X 10.6.3. They are both on a wireless LAN, once has a Canon Pixma 4200 printer directly connected via USB with Printer Sharing turned on - Everyone allowed to print.
The problem: When my wife prints to the shared printer from her machine it works fine. When my kids try to print from their Parental Control-controlled account it doesn't.
The job comes up in the print queue but with On hold (authentication required) next to it.
The account has the box ticked to allow administration of Printers.
I can find no place to Authenticate, to get the job to print, even via the CUPS Web interface (that I'm not an expert in).
All clues gratefully received.
Anyone have anu clues

  • E2500 Parental Controls problem

    Hello,
I am trying to set up parental controls through Cicso Connect, or the advanced router settings, for a new laptop on my network. The problem is that is will show up on the DHCP client table, but not in the parental control list. Not sure if it's important, but he new laptop runs Windows 8, while all others are Windows 7.  Any ideas on how to set up the parental controls for this new laptop?
    Thanks!

We need to further information on your win 8 laptop to diagnose the issue:
Is your win 8 laptop connected to the guest network? If yes, try connecting it to main network.
When you connected the win 8 laptop to the network, it prompted if you want to turn on sharing, did you select yes or no? Try selecting turn on sharing.
Is the netbios broadcast enabled on your win 8 laptop? make sure it is enabled
What security software are you using on your win 8? Try turning off your security system
Make sure network discovery is ON in your win 8 laptop.
You may also try turning off and on your router.

  • Allowing applications in Parental Controls problem

    Greetings,
I set up an account for my young son with parental controls for the Finder set to Simple Finder. I checked off some games and other applications that I wanted him to have access to and included Microsoft Word in that group. For some reason, all but the MS word appear properly in his simple finder and I cannot for the life of me figure out why. I checked the permissions on the MS Word application and all user classes are set to Read and Write, including "Others".
Anybody got any ideas as to what is going on? Is there another way to set the permissions that I am missing? Is this a MS plot?
Also, My neighbor has a Mac with MS Office and we tried it on his machine with the same results.
    Thanks in advance

    Tom,
I'm not surprised, probably because I had to repair Microsoft machines for years. One of the reasons they were years in federal court was because all, wordprocessors lets say, had to access one large library of files (whose name skips me). MS was charged with (among other things) purposefully modifying this proprietary file to cause WPs challenging Word in popularity to fail.
Early in 2000, the case was ordered dropped. Since then, most things made by MS for the internet won't work on Apples. (How much money is enough?)
However, My four-year old granddaughter has some suggestions for your son:
    1. Though she uses a big, italic felt-tipped pen or carpenter's pencil for writing, she also likes 72-point type on TextEdit. Although she likes Apple Chancery (because it's calligraphic, like the handwriting I teach her), AppleGothic is more like school There exists a typeface identical to that used in Kindergardens, designed for American children to imitate, but I can't currently find it. It was free, though; offered by an educational organization. Ask by e-mail alias & I can look.
    2. The 'DivX' video format shows full-screen movies beautifully over a 100 Mbps DSL. (When served by MS servers, the mpg4-based codec has been modified to be incompatible with any application not running on MS Windows, even Quicktime with [Flip4Mac|http://www.flip4mac.com/download.htm] and Windows Media Player. Though Flip4Mac was needed to view older NetFlix previews, they've been switching to Flash.
I've found that [Quicktime's extra codecs|http://www.apple.com/quicktime/resources/components.html] include DivX and the open source Xvid. [Stage6|http://stage6.divx.com> has some children's movies, to give you an example of DivX. DivX (or its open-source version), the new $40 Philips DVD player can play from disc (if you can find one).
    3. The free Safari plug-ins 'FlashPlayer' & 'Shockwave' are used for many free, online games offered by the educational children's networks. My granddaughter is in pre-school, but when she awakes early, she uses my account to play games, listen to stories, or prints free coloring-book pages. (She's the only person in the house I've been able to teach to use a computer correctly.)
She tells me that although there were fewer advertisements on [NickJr from Australia|http://www.nickjr.com.au>, which allows you to download Flash games to play offline, and on [NickJr in the UK|http://www.nickjr.co.uk/play/games/flashHolder.aspx?name=dora_map&type=flash &height=359&width=600], but [NickJr in the USA|http://nickjr.kids.us> seems to have caught on and is now a good site.
[PBS Kids in the USA|http://pbskids.org> is her favorite, though [Jane & the Dragon|http://www.janeandthedragon.co.nz>, offered by Qubo, is mine. The [Clever Catapult|http://www.qubo.com/veggiegames.asp?game=piewar] (her 2d favorite) and the brilliant [Orbiting Astronaut|http://www.qubo.com/321games.asp?game=spacedpenguin] (her favorite) needn't have had (in my opinion) somewhat violent aspects.
The Orbiting Astronaut (Spaced Penguins) is truly brilliant (and, like most, requires the free flashplayer and shockwave be installed), and educational for me (PhD scientist): various shots will put the astronaut into either a circular orbit, two circular orbits that fill the space between, or elliptical or figure-8 orbit that 'wobbles', its paths filling space. (These are all different solutions to non-linear differential equations that used to require supercomputers to solve!)
    4. She likes my saving each game as a weblink with an icon made from a screen capture of it. When on the road, for example, she plays many of these flash games offline, using the free [iSwiff|http://echoone.com/iswiff>, which also gives instructions for extracting the games from web pages.

  • Parental control problem

My family has a mac os x 10.5.8 Leopard, and my parents have set parental controls to limit the time each user has every day. The problem is, when Parental Controls "log out" a user, it merely switches to the login screen. The user's applications are still running, which uses the cpu for basically nothing, the memory(RAM) is still in use... the computer is slower, especially if multiple users have been "logged out" in the same way. Is there a way to fix this problem without buying Snow Leopard?
If not, is it fixed in the current release of os x 10.6 Snow Leopard?
If not, I would suggest to Apple for their next release they add an additional one minute(maybe parental control - customizable) for the user to save whatever he/she is doing(but nothing else), and when all applications are saved or when the minute is up, all applications are quitted and it logs out properly.

    HI,
    You can provide feedback here.

  • Simple Finder/Parental Controls Problem

I recently did an erase and install on my eMac and am now having problems with Simple Finder and Parental Controls.
I have an account set up for my daughter and I want to have Simple Finder running with about a half dozen or so applications for her to use. Prior to the erase-and-install, I had this set up and running fine. But now, even though I select all the programs I want under the Parental Controls preferences, only three show up (Safari, Dictionary, and TextEdit).
I tried deleting and re-creating the account, repairing permissions, turning around twice and clicking my heels together, etc. with no success.
    Any ideas? Thanks!

I ran disk utility and repaired the permissions--is that similar to what you suggest?
When I did a erase-and-install of Leopard, I assume that it ran through a disk inspection and repair routine. But perhaps something more is needed.

  • Parental control problem on m-lion

I have an account with parental controls enabled (managed acocunt) and on most occassion, access to all outgoing http requests using this account are blocked, either through a browser, curl or any other client. This error appears in the system log:
webfilterproxyd[4640]: **** ERROR: accept(): Too many open files, perhaps the connection was blocked by seatbelt?

Yes, I have also tried it with unrestricted access and the problem persists. Goole:  webfilterproxyd: **** ERROR: accept(): Too many open files, perhaps the connection was blocked by seatbelt   and note that I am not the only person experiencing  this issue. But I have not found a resolution.
tried lsof -i  but it did not help me much in finding what the problem is.

  • Parental Control Problems

As soon as I push the "lock icon" to change/edit the "parental controls", the multicolor wheel does not stop rolling and I have to "force quit" from "parental control" window. It won't let me into the Parental Controls setting pane. Any help on this ?

    Hi
I think you need to register a new account. Or you could do a factory reset.
    Just helping out...

  • Parental Controls Problem, I think.

I am running 10.7.3 on my iMac. I have parental control user accounts for my daughters. I get the following on a window when they log in, "You don't have permission to use the application "appstoreupdateagnet." I also get, "You don't have permission to use the application "Updater Startup Utility."  Both then say "For more information, contact the person who set up your account." How do I get rid of this? These applications are not listed in the Parental Controls. I have allowed the App Store and Google Updater but this did not resolve the error.

    Hello,
Not sure if you still needed an answer for this, but what you need to do is to temporarily add an adobe program.  You can then start up on the account with parental controls.  Then start up the program.  It might ask you to authenticate more programs.  Do so.  Then when you get to the program, click check for updates in the Help menu bar.  Run the update.  Then when it is done, click the preferences button.  You can then turn off Check for updates on startup.  Unfortunately  this has to be done on each account, so that's why it throws the error on the parental controlled account.  Once you have done all this, go ahead and disable all the programs it added and you should be fine after that.

  • Parental Controls problem

Hi, I have recently turned on parental controls.  Mountain Lion is now asking for a admin name and password.  My current user had admin rights.  No longer is this the case.  I have no idea what the admin account or password I am being asked for.

I have no idea what the admin account or password I am being asked for.
The same name and password that you used to activate Parental Controls.

  • Linksys E2000 Parental Control problems

I bought a brand spanking new Linksys E2000. I get great connection speeds and awesome range, until the day I set up parental controls. Once I set them up, It slowed my connections down to a crawl. Thinking that I did something wrong, I reset the router and did the entire installation. Everything was back to normal, but it did it again once I set up the parental controls.
(Mod note: Post was edited for guidelines compliance.)

Don't find it's Parental Control features useful:
    1. Can't set the starting from beyong 12 midnight, say from 1am onward.
    2. Can't set keywords
    3. Once you set the password, the Access Restriction function of the Router's web-based setting is disabled. You have to reset the router and uninstall Ciscso Connect and install it again.
The Cisco Connect.exe file had mysteriously disappeared from the first computer I used to install the software, so much so that I could not run it, uninstall it nor re install it.
I gave up and install it on another computer. This time I didn't touch the Parental Control and just went directly to use the Router's web-based setting which is more useful.

  • 8.3 breaks parental controls? Download any purchased app...

With 8.3 users can download or update previously purchased apps without reauthenticating.
This is a parent problem; I have lost the ability to remove apps or to prevent an app going back on. Since we share an Apple Store account (pre-family sharing) this is a particularly vexing problem, but it would be a problem even if each child had a unique account.
    Anyone else notice this?

I wrote up the 8.3 loss of parental control problem in a blog post: http://tech.kateva.org/2015/04/ios-83-took-away-one-of-my-favorite.html
For now I'm disabling App Deletion, telling kids I will be able to tell if they abuse their new Install privileges and I can always turn off all Installs (though that makes updates painful).

  • HELP... Unable to alter any parental control settings- I get an error message immediately and the lock goes back on.

Is there a fix to the parental control problem – in Mountain lion? I've been unable to change any control settings for months...should have kept the family PC...this IMAC is garbage at this point.

Although one would think that re-creating the index could fix this problem, that’s not the case. What sometimes works is restarting the computer or doing some cache-cleaning — don’t ask me why, and I don’t know how to fix the problem when that doesn’t work either.
You may also want to take a look at the following thread, where another user reported the problem in his/her case was related to a difference in how the email address was written:
