Parental controls a nuisance since Yosemite
Since the change to Yosemite Parental Controls "misbehaves":
- when granting extra time the extra time is "lost" whenever the user logs out or even goes to sleep mode. Until 10.9 that wasn't the case and extra time was kept for the remainder of the day.
- whenever any other change is performed in parental controls (e.g. granting access to a new website), extra time is lost as well and the (parentally controlled) user is logged out.
- stupid but not a real problem: the audio warning that time is about to expire is still English-only but the English text is now read with German pronounciation ("parental controls log out in xxx minutes").
Any idea if this can be rectified by the user or is a bug thats need fixing. (I do hope it's not a feature).
Hi,
I have experienced the same problems, and others.
For example, the website blocker "Allow access to only these websites" is not working as expected. All allowed websites work ok (as expected). However, several websites not on the "allowed" list are accessible but some random ones are not. There does not seem to be a pattern.
Under yosemite I cannot find any way of resetting the parental controls or getting them to work as expected. I have searched for a solution including deleting the files in /Library/Managed Preferences, turning off the controls and turning them back on again and rebooting. I wonder now if Yosemite stores the control files in the /Library/Managed Preferences directory at all any more. The files correctly disappear when you turn the controls off, but then when you turn them back on again the last known configuration is restored, so they really do not go away and supposedly are stored somewhere else. But where?
The App management controls do seem to work ok. However, unless the web blocking code is made to work then parental controls right now are useless (actually, worse than useless as they are misleading people into thinking sites are being blocked when they are not).
Parental Controls have often been buggy in Mac OSX and I am not sure why. I can imagine some parents/employers getting litigious.

Parental Controls Log Location
I'm migrating a parental controlled computer's data to a new computer. Where is the location of all the logs ie. iChat? Note: they are not in the Documents/iChats folder since parental controls is on.
Since I mentioned I'm migrating all my data, one would assume that these logs are an item I wanted to be migrated also. I know where they are to view them, but where are they located to move them?

Since upgrading to mountain lion the other day (from lion) safari has not been working properly. I have parental controls in place but seem unable to add new web pages to allowed list - wasn't expecting to have to anyway - these are webpages that were working perfectly well on safari prior to upgrade. Also the shortcuts above the tabs on safari are all now messed up.
Any advice on how to fix - I am not a computer expert so keep it simple please!
In the meantime I am having to use Firefox.
Thanks

The time limits in the parental controls do not work. I have several mac systems and they do not work on all of them. Also, I have had this problem since at least snow leopard and it is very frustrating that Apple is unable to fix a simple issue like this. All they have to do is somehow 'hard-wire' the time limits to the system clock but they are not listening. I used the feed-back feature in their support webpage and hopefully everybody else experiencing this issue will too. Thus, if they get a thousand notes on this issue they might listen and finally fix it.
Well, the whole system with those time limits are funky. Sometime this happens, sometime that happens. When the user is on the bed time limits do not work nor do the length of time limits. It is very frustrating as one of the reasons I bought an apple in the first place was those parental controls which did not exist in Windows prior to Windows 7. I do have a Windows 7 machine now and the bed time limits work there. Maybe you have a Windows 7 machine as well and can let them use it.

Parental Controls don't work correctly under Yosemite
I'm having some serious issues with Parental Controls under Yosemite, issues serious enough that Parental Controls prove to be worthless under Yosemite as currently implemented.
This is a clean install of Yosemite upgraded to current version 10.10.1.
Symptoms:
Using the child's account with parental controls active, when the parental control blocks a website, a dialog comes up offering to allow the parent/admin to approve the site and add it to the exceptions list. This is nice! Unfortunately, approving the website DOES NOT add it to the exceptions list... ever. We discovered this when launching Keynote, which kept trying to connect to an akamai.net server (probably an update check). We would sign in with the admin account to clear the server, then it would pop up with the same dialog box again. We did discover that I _can_ add the site via the Parental Controls prefpane, but kind of a pain. Why have a dialog box pop up if it doesn't actually work.
Time limits don't seem to be obeyed at all in Yosemite, child played on his account for 2 hours despite being set to 1/2 hour a day.
Some apps just lock up on launch (I do NOT use any app controls). I suspect (but can't demonstrate with certainty) that they are accessing blocked websites in the background. Two of the hanging apps are Pages and Keynote (current versions), apps I would expect to behave properly.
For now, I have disabled parental controls, as they are worthless in this form and just make for a frustrating experience for all. It has been disappointing that a feature that used to come in handy (mostly the time limits) has become completely worthless now.Apple doesn’t routinely monitor the discussions. These are mostly user to user discussions.
Send Apple feedback. They won't answer, but at least will know there is a problem. If enough people send feedback, it may get the problem solved sooner.

Or you can use your Apple ID to register with this site and go the Apple BugReporter. Supposedly you will get an answer if you submit feedback.

Parental controls messed up ever since I upgraded.
I am underage, and my parents are the admins on my Macbook Air; we have parental controls putting a time limit on my login. But ever since I upgraded to Mountain Lion, if I close the laptop without logging out, when I open it back up, the system kicks me off and says I used up all my computer time for the day (even though I haven't). It also doesn't give me the 15, 10, 5, and 1 minute warnings anymore. I can't figure out what's wrong! Can anyone help?

I installed Yosemite a month or so ago and since then my computer has been running extremely slowly. During start up it also will sometimes have half the screen looking very strange (lines going down...) or say that it needs to run maintenance before logging in. I ran an etresoft report, which is pasted below:
Problem description:

Jan 9, 2015, 10:17:21 PM /Users/[redacted]/Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports/VerizonUpdateCenter_2015-01-09 -221721_[redacted].crash1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can act on it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of it have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be a series of messages in the Terminal window like this:
Part 1 of 8 done at ... sec
Part 8 of 8 done at ... sec
The messages won't be spaced equally apart in time, but they give a rough indication of progress. Wait for the final message
[Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report the last message you saw. No harm will be done.
12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

Cannot add time in Parental Controls
I have a couple of computers that my kids use. They have mobile accounts with parental controls enabled on them. One is a MacPro 1,1 with 10.7.5, the other is a Mac Mini running 10.9.1.
When the kids use up thier time on the 10.7.5 machine and they are kicked back to the login screen, I can add more time for them if they attempt to login again. A window pops up telling them thier time is up and allowing me to input admin credentials to add more time.
On the 10.9.1 Mini if they try to login again the screen does the fast user switching "rotate to desktop" animation, holds a second and rotates back to the login window. I am never given the option of adding more time?
Based on all of the other Parental Control discussions I saw, most of how this tool works seems pretty nebulous and very few questions ever get satisfactorily answered. But I am holding out hope that this time someone has a solution. Would anyone running 10.9.1 be willing to see if you have the same issue after a controlled user has used up their time?
Thanks in advance,
MarshallI have been seeing similar issue since upgrading to Yosemite on our Late 2012 Mac Mini.
It doesn't happen every time, and sometimes it acts differently, more like this:
Dysfunctional Parental Controls
We log into child account. It prompts to add time. I put in my (or my wife's) credentials to add time (we've tried different amounts). It rotates the cube over, shows his desktop for a second, then rotates back to a black screen, or sometimes to the login screen. Restarting seems to fix it, but of course that's not ideal. -
Parental Controls Broken After Updating an Application
I'm using Parental Controls (remotely) under 10.5.4 to manage what applications can be opened in a small lab. This works well until I need to update an application on the lab computers. I'll use Firefox as an example, but this happens with all applications.
- I have a version of Firefox on all lab computers (3.0) and Firefox is allowed under parental controls. Everything works.
- I update Firefox to 3.0.1. (In this case, I simply overwrote the older version of firefox, but I get this problem when updating applications with installers.)
- If I remotely look at the Parental Controls settings for the lab computer, I can see that Firefox is still allowed (checked)
- Now, on the lab computer, I log into the managed account and try to open Firefox, I get a warning about the application not being on the allowed list.
- I log out of the lab computer, and again, access the parental controls setting remotely. Now Firefox is Not Allowed (unchecked).
- I check the box to allow Firefox
- Now when I log into the managed account, the new version of Firefox opens.
Some fixex / workarounds I have tried:
- After updating Firefox, I remotely accessed the parental controls settings and first disallowed (unchecked) Firefox, close parental controls, reopened it, and then allowed (checked) Firefox. When logged into the managed account, opening Firefox produced the not allowed error. When I return to the Parental Controls settings, Firefox is now Not Allowed (unchecked). Checking the box to allow Firefox fix the error.
- I've tried restarting after updating Firefox and it did not work.
My guess:
I assume that Leopard keeps a list of applications and versions installed on the computer. Parental Controls allows a specific combination and any update will break the parental controls. To allow this updated application to be opened, its old entry in the list must be updated to reflect the new version. The only way I have figured out how to do this, is to try and open the updated application and fail. Then I can finally allow the updated version.
Does anyone know of an automated or scritable way to do this. I have tried working with lsregister, but have not had any success. I need a way to force Leopard to reload / refresh its list of installed applications, with having a user logged into the console.
For a different solution, does if you can send a UNIX command to machine sitting on it login screen, that will cause the machine to login as a local console user. I could then send "open /path/to/updated app" and a logout to force the application list to be refreshed.
Many Thanks in advance for any help.Hi! Did you ever receive any feedback on this issue?
I am interested since I have noticed the exact same frustration with Parental Controls since updating to 10.5.
While a very good idea, I think the parental controls, especially with respect to permissions about applications is utterly useless at the moment. It is completely stupid that I have to reset the permissions for applications each and every time I update an application. I have three children who use the computer and I don't want them using every bit of software on the eMac. They are naturally curious and will click on programs that can do damage without realizing is.
I have also turned off any parental controls regarding web browsing but my children still hit many sites that are blocked by Parental Controls. I do have a linux gateway that does the filtering quicker and better.
If anyone at Apple is listening ... please spend some time to fix this for the next update.
Thank you. -
Any ideas for security and parental control software yet???
Just received two of the touchpads from the fire sale and gave them to my kids, both under 10. I am very interested in limiting the sites that can be accessed through the browser, as well as a few other things. Has anyone found a practical means of doing this? I'd hate to give up on this and switch it over to Android, especially since there is only Gingerbread available. But, I just don't know what else I can do about these. Any ideas?
Thanks!
Post relates to: HP TouchPad (WiFi)Please take this post with a grain of salt. I don't claim to be a security and parental control software expert, but I have researched these solutions and have some personal experience with them. That being said, here's some ideas to get you started.
As speedtouch mentioned, OpenDNS is a fantastic solution for website filtering. They have a great set of filters that can be customized and are one of the easiest systems to set up. Simply install an updater app on one of your desktop computers (or directly on your router if it's supported), configure your router to use their DNS servers, and you're good to go. I personally use this system mysefl and it works really well. The only downside in my experience is that there is not a temporary override system (at least, not in the free version that I use). An example of when this might be handy: my wife goes clothes shopping and looking at new bras. Every once in a while, a perfectly legitimate site might get blocked (in this case, probably something I don't want my kid looking at but perfectly fine for my wife). The option to "temporarily override the block" or "temporarily allow" the site would be nice, but it doesn't exist.
Another FANTASTIC solution that I've used in the past is the Astaro Security Gateway. They have a free home version of their "Software Appliance" that goes above and beyond OpenDNS. I haven't used it in a while, but when I did it was able to not only filter web sites but also monitor Instant Messaging and other online activites. It's a bit more involved as you need your own hardware (I used an old computer with 2 network cards and stuck it in between my router and my broadband modem), but the results are pretty powerful.
The downside to all these solutions, however, is that they will only work when the TouchPad is on your network. If they connect to a neighbors network of if the go to a friends house, all of these systems will be moot because they are completely bypassed. The only way to monitor that content from ANY network would be to install an application on the device itself and to my knowledge, none exist. -

Parental Controls bug in Mountain Lion 10.8.2
For years I've used Parental Controls, not to restrict my daughter's web content, but to limit her time on the computer. But tonight I upgraded Mountain Lion from 10.8.1 to 10.8.2 and something broke.
Suddenly every secure web page she tries to access (to include google, gmail, amazon, etc.) fails. It says "Parental controls restricts access to secure websites".
A little hunting around turned up the following Apple Knowledge Base article: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2900 that says "https note: For websites that use SSL encryption (the URL will usually begin with https), the Internet content filter is unable to examine the encrypted content of the page. For this reason, encrypted websites must be explicitly allowed using the Always Allow list. Encrypted websites that are not on the Always Allow list will be blocked by the automatic Internet content filter."
I understand that logic however that should NOT apply to me since I'm not trying to automatically restrict her adult web content or create allowed/blocked site lists, etc. She has *unrestricted* web site access, so the Internet content filter shouldn't even be in play here.
Just to get this up and running, I did type the Admin account and password in at the prompt to let her gain access to the web pages. However that did not work. Even though it said it would now allow access - it did not.
I also tried going into Parental Controls, turning ON web site filtering, going into Custom, and adding in approved secure web sites (google, etc.) Even *that* did not work.
Everything was great until 10.8.2 came along but now her account is for all intents and purposes unusable.
Help? And thanks.Same problem here. Apple seems to be neglecting the parental controls. First, they broke X11: http://xquartz.macosforge.org/trac/ticket/439. 10.8.1 didn't address that problem. Not only does 10.8.2 not address the X11 bug, it actually breaks secure web browsing!
Just to add a little more information, secure browsing on Safari seems to work OK for me once authorized. However, neither Firefox nor Chrome work with any secure site even after they have been authorized. Unfortunately, my daughter's school site is secure and it doesn't work on Safari so her Mac is useless for school now.
Looks like I'll have to restore using Time Machine and not update again until I know this has been addressed.
Apple, I'm not impressed.

Airport Base Station-Do g devices slow it down? Parental controls
I need to purchase a new Wi-Fi router and am looking at several but am looking at the Airport Base Station.
Most of my devices such as my Mac's all use N networking but other devices such as my Xbox 360 use g networking. When doing research on the Airport Base Station I read that when you connect G devices to the Airport Base Station it will slow down the entire network to G speed so that all your N devices really only get G speed.
Is this still an issue? Does the newer version of the Airport Base Station still do this? Has there been a firmware or hardware upgrade that solves this issue?
Also, when it comes to parental controls, does the AEBS have good parental controls? What I'm most interested in is being able to block specific websites such as Facebook so that all devices connected to the network would not be able to access Facebook. When I read up on the AEBS it appears to have some parental controls but you can't block specific websites. Is this true?
Another router I'm looking at is the Cisco Linksys E2000. A friend of mine has a E1000 and loves it. When doing research I became interested in the E2000 since it has gigabit ports.
Would g devices slow down all n devices connected to it though? What I'm wondering is if the issue with g devices is related to the AEBS or all n routers. What I like it is seems the E1000/E2000 has great parental controls for website blocking.
Thank you for your help. The AirPorts have no parental control capability so your choices are really down to the Cisco products.
As far as whether a "g" device will slow down an "n" device on a compatible network, it's all pretty much relative. If the "g" device is an iPhone, and the iPhone is connected to the network, I see no slowdown at all on the connection to my "n" Mac.
If I'm downloading something to the iPhone, the Mac may slow just a bit...maybe 10-15% during the iPhone download...but it does not drop down to "g" level wireless at any time. -
Since "Parental control" on Leopard is currently "busted", see thread: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1618967&start=0&tstart=0
What are some other effective 3rd party parental control apps available that is recommended? I've done google search but information is quite limited in terms of their effectiveness.Although I've never used the Leopard parental controls (my kids' machine is an old iMac with Tiger, I've never bothered to upgrade it), I've never been happy with the control of web sites in the parental controls. Fortunately, there's a free solution: [OpenDNS|https://www.opendns.com>. One of the features of OpenDNS is that you can limit access to specific groups of web sites (like adult sites, among others). You can apply this protection to one machine or to your whole network. I changed the settings on my AirPort base station to use OpenDNS, which means my access is also limited (not a problem for me), but I don't have to worry about what sites my kids are looking at on their iPods or on the PSP. Any wifi device will be unable to visit places I don't approve of.
Good luck! -
Problem disabling Parental Control
Hi!
I have had problems with Firefox since I installed Leopard, and now I've pinpointed it to Parental Control. On a freshly created account, there is no problem. If I turn on Parental Control (I switched it on, and disabled changes in the Dock and limited the web access) and then change it back (i.e. allowing changes in the Dock and unlimited web access - there is no general overall "disable Parental Control" as far as I can see), some Web sites does not display, I get "411 Length required" error.
I found a bug filed on Firefox (in Bugzilla), but I don't know if the problem is in Firefox (my bet is on Leopard, but that's just a guess).
The same web pages work on Firefox 3 beta.
One (Swedish) example is hemnet.se - enter e.g. "Stockholm" in the "Snabbsök" quick search text box. I get the 411 on that.
Anyway, I've tried deleting lots of preference stuff, listing files before and after the Parental Control thing trying to locate the problem - but I just cannot make it go away.
Any clues on how to kill it?
More on this: http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=6581473Hi Everyone. As a relatively new MAC user and the only person to use my MAC, I am the administrator and when I set up my computer, being a 48 year old without children around the house, did not need or wish to have parental controls enabled and wouldn't have checked any restrictions, (The check box in 'Accounts' is unchecked). However, in iTunes, in the parental settings of preferences for the iTunes store, the restrict movies box is ticked & set to 12 and the restrict TV programmes marked caution box is ticked too. I do not wish to be restricted on anything and everytime I try to change them they have reverted back the next time I look??? Why is this please ... and how do I change it, is it a separate setting to the 'Accounts' setting, I am baffled, or have I missed something?
Thank you.
