Parental Controls causing login to hang

Parental Controls in Leopard - trouble.
I have an iMac G5 (ambient light sensor), 1.8Ghz, 2GB RAM. Previously ran Parental Controls, having one managed account, plus other unmanaged and admin accounts.
I prepared for Leopard upgrade: disabled and stopped all Tiger Parental Controls. Upgraded "in place" to Leopard, applied Parental Controls (all apps allowed, only a whitelist of web sites applied), and BOOM! the managed account gets past login window, but then the beach ball spins,... and spins,..
I took a look at the Console and see that multiple REQUIRED services are terminating with "Permission denied", then bailing and respawning, ad infinitum. Problems are:
ATSServer (Font manager),
pboard (copy & paste manager), and most importantly (I think) is:
UserEventAgent, for allowing system and user events to be handled.
Anyway, infinite loop... the managed user never gets a Desktop. I have gone to 10.5.1, and all other updates. I have disabled File Sharing. I have removed all from the Spotlight list. I have used Disk Utility to Repair File Permissions, a couple of times, actually. All with no effect.
Summary: Turning OFF Parental Controls, the user account gets to the Desktop - all is well; I turn ON Parental Controls and the beachball spins until hard reboot.
Has anybody had it this bad? Why would I think Archive & Install would be any better?
I will paste from the system.log, if it would help. Insight? Observations?

Hi Ben
My brand new iMac had a kernel panic the day after it arrived. I went through a long checking procedure which revealed nothing. Only then did I think to read the panic log, not expecting to see any words that meant much. Lo and behold - Parental Controls clearly cited as the culprit!
Because my kids complained that they could not access loads of sites that they always used to (even with Intego's Content Barrier in use on my older mac) I switched off the 'restrict access to adult sites' option but left the time restrictions on. There has not been a repeat of the kernel panic since, although I didn't realise the connection at the time.
Maybe give that a try, assuming you have had that option switched on when you had the crashes?
At this point, I don't think an A&I is going to help much.
Either way, I'm going to feedback to Apple and maybe it will get fixed in the next update.

    Mate the best thing to do is create two sepperate accounts with two seperate e-mail adresses. no harm in saying your bothe over 18. what he plays should be down to you and it shouldn't impare your gaming experience. hope this helps.

    Hi,We recently bought one PS3 and I foud a big problem. I'm adult but one of the users of it is under age.I registered his account as a sub acount of mine and I disabled parental control cause I want his account unrrestricted. He can play MW3 on history mode but can't play online (says that Its restricted by the parental control). I disabled all settings about parental control in PS3 and on his sub-account but still cant play. ¿We cant remove that restricction or we have to fake the age? (If we have to fake the age I think that is stupid and maybe return the PS3 and change it for other console... cause no entrepise should say what can do our childs if we allow them to do it) Regards.

  • Parental control account hangs on login after idle

    I've got two parental controlled acounts set up on my kids computer which is running 10.8.3.
    If they don't log out and the system locks from inactivity, when they go to log in it hangs. I havent' been able to confirm, but it might only occurr when there time limit is reached while they are logged out.
    I can share the screen as an adminitstrator and kill the logind process to recover, but this happens almost every time.
    Is anyone else having this issue? Any ideas how to fix it?

    I had the same problem. Examining the console log showed that I needed to agree to some terms of service, but no terms of service showed up to agree to. On the iCloud panel I signed out and then signed in again. I had to agree to remove a bunch of stuff to sign out. When I signed in again the terms of service panel showed up and I was finally able to log in. Hope this helps!
    Some error text from console:
    com.apple.iCloudHelper:
    ErrorID = "MOBILEME_TERMS_OF_SERVICE_UPDATE"
    description = "This account needs to accept the ToS"
    (even though mobileme is gone, I guess the errors haven't been updated)

  • Can't login to https pages under kids' 'parental controlled' account

    I'm trying to login to Netflix under my kids' account. It's parental controlled and only certain applications are allowed, web filtering is on, etc. On trying to login, however, I get "can't establish secure connection to the server..."
    Firefox does the same thing; says "the connection was interrupted while loading"
    What parental control parameter is causing this? Its also true for other sites, like my bank, etc.

    There's a Knowledge Base article that mentions this:
    https note: For websites that use SSL encryption (the URL will usually begin with https), the Internet content filter is unable to examine the encrypted content of the page. For this reason, encrypted websites must be explicitly allowed using the Always Allow list. Encrypted websites that are not on the Always Allow list will be blocked by the automatic Internet content filter.

  • Parental Controls-How can I allow login to email sites?

    How can I setup parental controls to allow access to Google and to Yahoo for email? When I set those sites up in Parental Controls> Website restrictions> Try to limit access to adult websites automatically> Customize> "Allow these websites" list in admin account's Preferences, the child is unable to login to his email pages in his account side of the Mac. Only when I select to "Allow unrestricted access to websites" can he login to his email pages. When it refuses to let him login, the error message in Safari reads:
    Safari can’t open the page.
    Safari can’t open the page “https://www.google.com/accounts/Login?hl=en&continue=http://www.google.co.uk/” because Safari can’t establish a secure connection to the server “www.google.com”.
    How can I restrict access to adult sites but still allow access to his email sites and other sites?
    Thank you in advance for ay help offered.

    No longer na issue.

  • Parental controls still causing panics

    A while back there were a fair few posts re Parental Controls being the cause of regular kernel panics, but they seem to have died down now.
    I'm still getting them - about 3 a week - is anyone else and if not, how did you solve it?
    I thought it was going to get fixed in the last updates.
    I would turn them off and use Intego software instead, but I can't get hold of them for a Leopard update. Anyone know if they are still in business?

    No harm in being cautious. In my experience, these particular kernel panics are only happening at log on/off so if that's the same for you, your risk of losing data is small. Assume you save and back up regularly?
    As for potential damage to the system, I would ask for help from someone with more knowledge. I have not detected any other problems related to this so far - it's just been an inconvenience.
    I have since switched off PC and installed Intego's Content Barrier instead, which only polices the internet use, but that suits our needs. So I can't tell if the security update has cured the problem. Maybe someone else can post?

  • Safari Parental Controls Blocks YouTube Login?

    I have parental controls enabled on a user account to "limit adult websites automatically". Whenever I try to log in to YouTube (with www.youtube.com allowed), it comes up with this:
    I've heard that a similar problem with Google Mail can be bypassed by entering google.com's ip address into the "Allowed" section in the Parental Controls preference, but this did not not work with YouTube's ip. Perhaps I have the wrong ip? Or is there no way around this?

    If you were to create another standard account and apply the same parental controls, would the same thing happen?

  • Parental Controls Imbedded Youtube Vidoes Causes and Error

    I am using the "Only Allow these websites" parental controls on my iMac (Mountain Lion 10.8.4).
    However there is a website that has imbedded youtube videos (Rainbowloom.com).  There are a imbedded youtube websites for the various lessons and I added them one by one (there are about 20).
    The issue is that when attempting to play these videos MOST of the time, the video appears then goes to the end. Whether it is a 15 moin vidoe, 5 min video, (as shown on the imbeded video) the video shows "1 second" AFTER clicking and goes to the end (where it pompts you to play other vidoes).  It also reports that an "error has occurred"
    If I use the less restrictive parental contronls the video plays (let the Safari decide).
    Anybody have a solution to this.
    Thanks

    If you were to create another standard account and apply the same parental controls, would the same thing happen?

  • Parental Controls Broken After Updating an Application

    I'm using Parental Controls (remotely) under 10.5.4 to manage what applications can be opened in a small lab. This works well until I need to update an application on the lab computers. I'll use Firefox as an example, but this happens with all applications.
    - I have a version of Firefox on all lab computers (3.0) and Firefox is allowed under parental controls. Everything works.
    - I update Firefox to 3.0.1. (In this case, I simply overwrote the older version of firefox, but I get this problem when updating applications with installers.)
    - If I remotely look at the Parental Controls settings for the lab computer, I can see that Firefox is still allowed (checked)
    - Now, on the lab computer, I log into the managed account and try to open Firefox, I get a warning about the application not being on the allowed list.
    - I log out of the lab computer, and again, access the parental controls setting remotely. Now Firefox is Not Allowed (unchecked).
    - I check the box to allow Firefox
    - Now when I log into the managed account, the new version of Firefox opens.
    Some fixex / workarounds I have tried:
    - After updating Firefox, I remotely accessed the parental controls settings and first disallowed (unchecked) Firefox, close parental controls, reopened it, and then allowed (checked) Firefox. When logged into the managed account, opening Firefox produced the not allowed error. When I return to the Parental Controls settings, Firefox is now Not Allowed (unchecked). Checking the box to allow Firefox fix the error.
    - I've tried restarting after updating Firefox and it did not work.
    My guess:
    I assume that Leopard keeps a list of applications and versions installed on the computer. Parental Controls allows a specific combination and any update will break the parental controls. To allow this updated application to be opened, its old entry in the list must be updated to reflect the new version. The only way I have figured out how to do this, is to try and open the updated application and fail. Then I can finally allow the updated version.
    Does anyone know of an automated or scritable way to do this. I have tried working with lsregister, but have not had any success. I need a way to force Leopard to reload / refresh its list of installed applications, with having a user logged into the console.
    For a different solution, does if you can send a UNIX command to machine sitting on it login screen, that will cause the machine to login as a local console user. I could then send "open /path/to/updated app" and a logout to force the application list to be refreshed.
    Many Thanks in advance for any help.

    Hi! Did you ever receive any feedback on this issue?
    I am interested since I have noticed the exact same frustration with Parental Controls since updating to 10.5.
    While a very good idea, I think the parental controls, especially with respect to permissions about applications is utterly useless at the moment. It is completely stupid that I have to reset the permissions for applications each and every time I update an application. I have three children who use the computer and I don't want them using every bit of software on the eMac. They are naturally curious and will click on programs that can do damage without realizing is.
    I have also turned off any parental controls regarding web browsing but my children still hit many sites that are blocked by Parental Controls. I do have a linux gateway that does the filtering quicker and better.
    If anyone at Apple is listening ... please spend some time to fix this for the next update.
    Thank you.

  • Parental Controls Have Blown Away My iChat

    Thinking my teenager was too much involved with chatting when he would do better with homework, I set up an account called homework, which cut out all iChat (no buddies acceptable) and limited his Safari'ing. But, right away -- in our family account -- all the buddies went gray and no chatting was possible, not for my son, not for anyone! And I seem unable to call them back. Turning off parental controls seems unproductive.
    Turned on parental controls for one account, lost iChat universally. HOW CAN I GET ICHAT BACK? (Yes, I'd like to keep my Homework account working, but I'll give it up if absolutely necessary)

    Hi Dialoguy,
    Do you have your Mac set up that the Family acount is also a Non Admin Account ?
    AT THIS STAGE DO NOT DELETE THE HOMEWORK ACCOUNT
    Is the AIM or .mac account he signs in with in Homework the same one used in the Family account ?
    Would it be even if it worked ? (had some allowed Buddies)
    I have seen one occassion when Parental Controls were not to the perosons liking and they deleted the whole Mac USer Account without turning Off Parental Controls which caused them endless problems.
    There was a recent Post about the fact that Jabber accounts can not be blocked (and there are AIM Transports out there to get around any AIM name blocks).
    EDIT to that info. iChat help says Jabber and Bonjour is disabled at that time.
    If the Family account is not the Mac's Admin acount account I would log on as the Admin account and try turning Parental Controls off there.
    I would also check that the Family account if a standard one does not show itself to have Parental controls.
    The documentation in iChat help states it is for one Mac User account at a time.
    Quote
    Using Parental Controls with iChat
    If you are using Mac OS X v10.4 or later, and have your computer set up with other, nonadministrator user accounts, you can control who the other users of the computer can chat with. Using Parental Controls you can add only the buddies you want the other user to chat with.
    To add buddies to other users' parental controls:
    1. Open System Preferences and click Accounts.
    2. Select a user account and then click Parental Controls.
    3. Select the iChat checkbox and then click Configure.
    4. Click the Add button and select a buddy from the list.
    5. If there are no buddies in the list, click New Person and enter the buddy's .Mac account or AIM screen name.
    Only the buddies you add will be available for chats.
    Parental Controls work only with AIM buddies. If you use Parental Controls, local buddies and Jabber buddies will not be available to the user you set up with Parental Controls.

    I can replicate this with a test Mac User account using the same iChat name and Fast User Switching.
    Closing IChat and restarting does not help.
    The Test account does not have Multiple Logins allowed at present.

  • Sky Movies lock out regardless of parental control set up

    I can appreciate parental controls when you have a child and you want to limit their viewing of certain movies. However, seeing as it is just my wife and I in our house, I have deactivated the parental controls because we have no use for them, which is great cause I can download movies on demand without the need to enter the four digit pin every time. To my surprise though, even with parental controls switched off, if I go to the live showing of the movie on the sky movie channels, I have to enter my pin every time I change channels. I've been told this is a legal thing from Ofcom and that's fair enough... but what surprises me more is, while you lock the sky movie channels, you can still access babestation and the rest of the "dating and chat lines" including, "Grannies on the pull" without any need to enter your pin and this is on a Saturday at 1 oclock in the afternoon. So if I had a kid, what would I rather him accidently coming across... a movie such as Die Hard which is complete fiction or a scantilly clad woman advertizing her "services" I think I know what I would rather have.

    Sometimes "Parental Controls" can be subject to glitches, so just to clarify, are you saying that while logged in to the "admin" account and selecting that user in "System Preferences" > "Accounts" you are unable to use "Parental Controls" > "Finder.app & System" > "Applications" to select "Safari.app", or that you are selecting it but the alias is not appearing in the user's "My Applications" folder? This is a fairly common problem with non-Apple apps and "Classic" apps, but I don't think it happens very often with OS X Apple apps...
    As a workaround, you can add your own alias by logging in to the "simplified" account, switching to "Full Finder" and opening two "Finder" windows - one showing "/Applications" and the other showing the user's "~/Library/Managed Items/My Applications" folder. Drag "Safari.app" to the "My Applications" folder while holding down the "command" (⌘) and "option" (⌥) keys (dragging with these modifiers causes an "alias" to be created at the destination, provided that the destination is "writable" by the user performing the operation). However, due to the way "Simple Finder" works, it will be necessary to "lock" the alias file using "Get Info", or else the alias will be deleted during the next login.
    Also, note that unlike a "Some Limits" account, "Simple Finder" does not restrict application use so removing "Firefox" from "My Applications" will only make it inconvenient to use. Other means will be necessary to actually prevent its use, for example something "permissions" based like changing it's permissions or moving it somewhere to which the user doesn't have access. But it should also be noted that the restrictions on site access placed on Safari don't work very well in any case so they could just download a new copy...

  • Parental Controls turns on automatically?

    Hi have a strange problem where I see my mobile users (who have administrative rights on the mac) login to their mac book day after day without any problems. Then, without good cause, the parental control flag gets checked automatically and then they can no longer login using their account. I have to login as a local administrator, uncheck the parental controls flag on their mobile account, and then have them login again. Often, I am not around to do this for them as they are mobile. Can someone explain how this could happen or give me a method for disabling parental controls permanently so it will stop interfering with my network users?

    I also have this problem, though it with local admin accounts on several differnt computers. All running osx 10.6.6 or later. All are bound to AD 2008 server, for printing and file sharing. Accounts that are having the problems are local accounts.
    If I turn off the parental control, it stays off, untill that user logs out, when it gets turned back on...

  • Parental Controls Fails to Log Managed Account Out (logs included)

    I use Parental Controls to limit my children's time playing video games (my time, too). The forced logout often fails. In particular, the screen flashes and the voice are present, but the forced logout doesn't happen, and the child (or me) is free to continue wasting time. Here's the relevant portion of system.log:

    Note the similarity to the earlier post by Mike Harris (http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=6259747). Unfortunately, this one is somewhat different; the error returned by CGSCreateLoginSession is 1010. In CGError.h, this error is defined as: kCGErrorInvalidOperation. If I could see what arguments were being passed to CGSCreateLoginSession, this might help...
    Following this failure, there's a crash log written for the SecurityAgent, which suggests a bus error, though I'm guessing this is not related to the root cause.

    Any help appreciated,
    John Clements

    Sadly, this sequence did not solve the problem, though I do have a bit more information.
    Firstly; following a reboot, the first forced logout worked correctly, and subsequent ones failed; I believe that this is always the case. That is, it always works the first time after rebooting, and fails thereafter.
    With respect to your suggestions: the preference file was loginwindow.plist, not com.apple.loginwindow.plist. I did delete it, and it was re-created; it looks pretty innocuous. Using the Property List Editor to convert it to XML, it looks like this:
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
    <!DOCTYPE plist PUBLIC "-//Apple//DTD PLIST 1.0//EN" "http://www.apple.com/DTDs/PropertyList-1.0.dtd">
    <plist version="1.0">
    <dict>
    <key>BuildVersionStampAsNumber</key>
    <integer>19269344</integer>
    <key>BuildVersionStampAsString</key>
    <string>9G55</string>
    <key>SystemVersionStampAsNumber</key>
    <integer>168101376</integer>
    <key>SystemVersionStampAsString</key>
    <string>10.5.6</string>
    </dict>
    </plist>
    Thirdly, running fix perms in Disk Utility did find altered permissions on several likely-looking files; the secure.log was group-readable and shouldn't have been, and several elements of /Library/Application Support/ were not group-readable and were supposed to be. Unfortunately, repairing these permissions did not make the problem go away.
    I do have one final clue, though; on the first (successful) forced logout after rebooting, I noticed a launchd message in system.log:
    Jan 4 10:21:26 Schmoop-Box-3 com.apple.launchd[198] ([0x0-0x22022].com.yourcompany.starwars[231]): Exited: Killed
    That's the successful one, mind you. So I'm wondering whether the first successful exit is taking down some launchd agent that helps with the forced logout process.
    Ah, speculation.
    Many thanks for your suggestions.

  • Safari causing full-system hang

    For a while now I've been getting the SBOD irregularly in Safari, since 3.x if I remember right. I've got some time off work at the minute so I'm finally looking into this properly, and here's what I've found:
    There seems to be two separate conditions. The first happens on loading some, but not all web pages, causes a lengthy hang in which the entire system (even invoking Dashboard or Spaces) becomes unresponsive. In the console this accompanied by an entry similar to the following:
    05/10/2010 08:15:47 /Applications/Safari.app/Contents/MacOS/Safari[242] ATS AutoActivation: Query timed out. (elapsed 5.0 seconds. params: queryString = {comapple_ats_namepostscript == "Helvetica-Neue" && kMDItemContentTypeTree != com.adobe.postscript-lwfn-font}, valueListAttrs = {<CFArray 0x6f5710 [0xa008dee0]>{type = immutable, count = 1, values = (
    0 : <CFString 0xa01602c8 [0xa008dee0]>{contents = "kMDItemContentType"}
    )}}, sortingAttrs = {<CFArray 0x6f5730 [0xa008dee0]>{type = immutable, count = 1, values = (
    0 : <CFString 0xa01603a8 [0xa008dee0]>{contents = "kMDItemContentModificationDate"}
    )}}, scopeList = {<CFArray 0x6f5750 [0xa008dee0]>{type = immutable, count = 1, values = (
    0 : <CFString 0xa0161a98 [0xa008dee0]>{contents = "kMDQueryScopeComputer"}
    (sometimes it names a font, sometimes the font name is "_")
    I suspect this means some vestigial adobe product has messed my system right up. I used to use CS4 but have long since removed it. I also have Air and Flash (the current gala beta) installed. I have had fontbook validate Helvetica Neue and check all fonts for duplicates - if external disks are plugged in at this time they all spin up.
    The other case is when downloading a file through clicking a link or alt-clicking a link (right-clicking a picture and saving it to the downloads folder does not cause this behaviour), and is accompanied by this much sparser line in the console:
    05/10/2010 08:25:06 kernel disk0s2: I/O error.
    The files themselves can be opened, moved and copied without incident and at regular speeds, so I doubt disk corruption. I've also performed a few full clone/restores on my boot disk with no effect. My initial thoughts were to blame a long-forgotten folder action that sorted downloads into different places (including a network share, if present), but disabling folder actions has not helped.
    So, any ideas? I'm fresh out.

    A workaround for the font-problem seems to be to turn off ATS - it's in FontBook.
    The second issue still eludes me.
    Things I have tried:
    Trashing ~/Library/Safari/
    Trashing ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Safari*
    Cleaning out every vestigial trace of anything suspect I had on my system (google keystone, logitech control centre, SIMBL, The Spark, iStat Menus, folder actions)
    Interestingly, the issue is not present for the guest user, so it IS something wrong with my user account. I just can't figure out what.
    Yes, making a brand new account would fix all this, providing I'm meticulous about testing the issue as I move /Users/Old/ into /Users/New/, but I'm kind of loathe to give up. It's surely something really simple!
