Parental Controls Connection Error

Parental controls had been working fine until a day or so ago when I began to get a msgbox with the error "Connection Error - Authentication failed", twice in a row when I attempted to connect from another machine. This occurred after I had entered my name/Pw for my admin account on the other machine.
I hit OK (twice) and then it seems to be ok. The changes I make are there when I close preferences and go in again.
Any ideas on what problem this is?
Here's a part of the console log around that time:
1/16/12 2:46:11.969 PM System Preferences: -[AdminRemoteDirectoryService directoryServiceAtAddress:] returned nil
1/16/12 2:46:11.969 PM System Preferences: -[DSNode openProxyNodeAtAddress::::] returned nil

So I see 25 other people had this issue...SO what happened. I am getting this and want to remotely exert PC on my daughter's MBP from the safety of another room hahahahaha.
Any ideas?

  • Parental Controls Unexpected error 2112

The EA6900 (AC1900) router will not access the Parental Controls.  When I try to select it, it gives me an error 2112.  I have already tried the following:
    Restart the router
Restart the modem, and the router.
(using the app on my phone, get same error)
uninstall and reinstall the app on my phone,
    log out, log in again
    Log in using the computer.
In all these cases, I am unable to access the Parental controls.
I tried the customer support chat, but they want to charge me to fix a problem with the system.  I have done a little research, and it appears this problem is common.
What should I do to fix this?  I bought a system with significant upgrades so I could have some control over the users in my house.

Hi wasamoto. Allow me to help.
Aside from the step you've taken, you may install the app on another handheld device and see if you'll get the same error message. You can also use another browser for further isolation. By the way, were you able to access it before? If you'll encounter the same thing, I suggest that you check if the router has an up-to-date firmware. Updating or reflashing the router's firmware may correct the error. After that, perform a factory reset and configure the router again.

  • Safari, Secure connection to sites, and Parental Control

I'm setting up Safari for a child, and have Parental Controls enabled and am customizing the list of sites that can be visited. I'm allowing Netflix.com and have multiple http and https Netflix URL's allowed. However, when I test accessing this site, Safari gives an error stating that it cannot establish a "secure connection".
The same computer, with a different account, can access the same URL without the error. My assumption would be that since I specifically allowed several Netflix.com URL's, that this would work just fine. By granting specific access, you are bypassing Parental Controls in a controlled way.
What's causing this to not work?
    Thanks for your help.

Netflix only provides HTTPS when loggin in or visting the main site, not for the content or it would have to encrpyt the video stream (expensive).
It also sends one to another site (with another name "movies.netflix.com" here) to view the content, perhaps you have to access the account from another machine, grab the URL it directs you too and enter that into Parental Controls.
Silverlight also has to be updated, check your Flash too.
    https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/plugincheck/
I did see the thread about using the IP address for HTTPS sites, but wouldn't there be a large number of IP addresses associated with a Netflix type of site due to all of the streaming video feeds available?
If that wouldn't be a problem, does anyone know how to determine the IP address of Netflix?
The video streams are not encrypted, and IP addresses are just the physical buildings of the servers themselves, the buisness name (URL) can change locations and that's what the Domain Name Server is used for to resolve those IP numbers for you in case they do change.
Netflix log in and content delivery have different IP addresses, the content delivery may use IP's of servers closer to your location, so it would not assist you for me to give those out.
You can install Firefox web browser and a add-on called FlagFox, which displays a little country flag in the URL address bar of each website you visit which you can right click and "Copy IP" if you so need it.
I don't advise using the IP, as that can change, use the URL so the Domain Name Server of your ISP can provide the correct IP address so your comptuer can connect.
Also Firefox has more add-ons for control and a nearly completely customizable web browser that may be a better choice for children/special needs (big buttons, type etc) than Safari.
There is Public Fox which can lock down certain aspects of the browser (prevent downloads for instance or changing things.)
Theme Font & Size Changer which can enlarge the type of Firefox itself, there is NoSquint which can auto-zoom all web pages etc.
There are Firefox Personas and Themes that can dress up or "childize" the browser so it's more fun for children.

  • Safari can't connect to server with parental controls on

I have one user with admin rights and one user plus guest with parental controls turned on. Recently when parental controls are turned on, I get 'safari can't connect to server' error. When I turn parental controls off again I can connect to the internet again. Why is this?

    Hi and welcome....
Unfortunately, Parental Controls can only be enabled on a non admin account.
See if there's a proxy set up for Safari. From the Safari menu bar click Safari / Preferences then select the Advanced tab. Click "Change Settings" next to: Proxies.
That will launch System Preferences / Network - Proxies.
If there are any boxes checked under: Select a protocol to configure, deselect the box then click Ok.
Quit Safari (Command + Q) then relaunch Safari.
See if Safari can connect in a parental controlled user account.

  • Connecting to Http Proxy on Lion under parental controls

    Hello.
Ive been looking for a couple of days for a fix for this. The issue im having is running parental controls on an account (any settings enabled/disabled, even with no web access permissions) and using a proxy (http, https, ftp) to connect to the internet. Connected as a standard/administrator user I can connect to the internet fine, but as soon as parental controls are enabled i cannot. I can't even connect to a local address without an error in the browser.
I have tried this on multiple lion computers with the same outcome.
    The error im getting is:
Chrome: is no data received, no server data was sent.Error 324
Firefox is the default connection was reset error
And safari dosen't even give an error just a white screen.
And external programs don't seem to work.
    The computer is 100% uptodate.

Parental controls use an internal proxy which ignores the proxy set in Network Preference.  By making the internal proxy non-executable to the user with parental controls request can be passed to the external proxy.
You can run the following command from Apple Remote Desktop as root (or locally with sudo).
    chmod a-x /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/FamilyControls.framework/Versions/A/Resources/webfilterctl
Note: This also works in 10.8 which has the same problem.

  • Parental control = lost connection to server

If parental controls are enabled -- even if child's use (for example, in Content) is not actually limited -- why do Safari and Firefox lose connection? Error message is "Firefox can't establish a connection to the server at [url]" for accounts that are "managed," that is, for which parental controls are enabled. Firefox works fine for all other accounts whether "standard" or "admin." This also happens in Safari: "can't connect to the server "livepage.apple.com"."

    Anyone would help me.

  • Smart Wi-Fi error 2178 while editing parental controls - EA2700 router

Hi, I am seeing an "unexpected error 2178" while trying to edit the parental controls in Linksys Smart Wi-Fi. I have been editing the parental controls without any issues previously and wondering why this happened? My EA2700 router has the latest firmware 1.1.39.145204. I have tried other computers and get the same error code. I have also tried to disable the firewall, reboot the PC, router and modem. Linksys defines the troubleshooting error 2178 as "Only one edit pane can be opened at a time. The existing pane will be displayed" which makes little sense as there is only one standard pane anyway, and i don't open Smart Wi-Fi in other computers simultaneously. I think this error has something to do with the Linksys server. The expanded detail of the error message says: /jnap/parentalcontrol/SetParentalControlSettings -- Status: 200 OK Content-Type: application/json; charset=utf-8 Connection: close Content-Length: 38 Date: Sat, 29 Jun 2013 02:31:02 GMT Server: lighttpd/1.4.28
Other editing functions in Smart Wi-Fi works normally, only the parental controls. The router also works fine. Help on this is much appreciated!

Is there any representative from Cisco that reads this forum? I certainly would like Cisco to check their server for any bug that is causing this error! This is getting really frustating with no support from Cisco at all. Big regret buying this router!!

  • Parental Controls Stops Ipad and TV connecting to ...

I set up parental controls as teeenages son now has a lap top in his room but now the only thinh that can connect to the interenet is my laptop and our phones.
I deleted parental controls but the tv (well the roku box) and the ipad still can't connect.   The ipad redirects to a BT page saying parental controls are blocking this page (google) . The roku box just gives us an error.
I am some what baffled by the talk of DNS and the only info i can find is for a mac computer not a device.
Can anyone help me get things working ?  Also is there anything i can just install on his laptop that will be simpilar than this carry on ?  (it a PC laptop if its important )
    Thanks

Provided that the iPad was using the normal automatic network settings, and you had not modified them, and Smart Setup was turned off, then Parental Controls would not have stopped it working.

  • Windows Vista Parental Controls Preventing Connection to iTunes Store?

I really have two questions, one of which I think I have resolved but would like to find a more elegant way of handling. Let's tackle that first, after I provide some background.
I have been "managing" the contents of my son's iPod using my computer. Now that he has his own computer it should be up to him. I have two users established on his computer, with me as administrator. I have set up parental controls and am specifiying the websites he can access. I used an external hard drive to copy all his music files to his computer, putting them in a folder under his user name.
When he tries to play music copied from CD's or purchased from iTunes using my computer, a message pops up that says "The song <song name> could not be used because the original file could not be found. Would you like to locate it?" Absent a way to locate all such songs simultaneously, I click on the yes button and scroll through the list of songs until I find the one desired. Is there a better way, or are he and I going to have do repeat this hundreds of times? I think this needs to be resolved before he tries to sync his iPod with his computer. Correct?
The second problem crops up when he tries to purchase songs from iTunes. The error message reads "We could not complete your iTunes Store request. An unknown error occured (-9808). There was an error in the iTunes Store. Please try again later." Apple.com is one of the sites he is allowed to visit, and there is no mention of parental controls or filtering (normally when that happens I am allowed to override with my password). Also, the computer has been authorized. Has anyone experienced anything like this or know what the workaround is? Does it have to do with parental controls, or is it something else?
Thanks in advance for your help.

    Hello, Welcome to Apple Discussions.
I have a few things to offer that may make things a bit easier. You mention the library or music content is on an External HD and you copied it to his PC. Is the Hard Data aka the songs themselves still on the computer in a folder?
If so. Delete the songs in iTunes, Select 1 song, then Edit Select All, and Delete from Library. Now go to iTunes - Edit - Preferences- Advanced Tab
-Put a check mark in Keep iTunes Music Folder Organized, Copy files to iTunes Music Folder when adding to the library. Thus whenever songs get added into iTunes a hard copy will be copied into the iTunes music directory stored in
Music - iTunes - iTunes Music.
-Now exit out of Preferences, Go to File - Add Folder to Library - (assuming all the songs from the HD are in 1 massive folder) and browse for this folder. iTunes will scan it, add it into iTunes, and then copy a hard digital copy into the Music-iTunes-iTunes Music folder. You can go confirm the files are there by visiting the folder. The file size of the iTunes folder should grow as you add more and more music.
Back up your iTunes library by copying to an external hard drive

  • DSCL Error on export and import of MCX parental controls

Hi I have been using the -mcxexport and -mcximport commands to copy local user parental controls in my labs but have hit a problem.
I need to use the commands to secure 250+ Macs over ARD. The commands have worked for me in the past but now I get Error: 14987
I have seen this error before but got around it by adding the .plist extention and making sure it had root access.
This has not worked. I am not a DSCL guru or a UNIX boff and am really stuck as to where this problem is.
I am currently in a lab of 20 where I get this error. I have another lab next door from a very similar build and that works fine.
    sudo dscl . -mcxexport /Users/student  /Users/admin/Documents/parental_controls.plist
    Error:14987
I have used sudo and even run logged in as root. Executed locally and over ARD. Pretty stumped, and quite desperate!
    The clients are 10.6.8
Any help would be really great!
    Cheers
    Carl

thanks - but that is effectivley what I did - used the repository import from my exported ZIP file - and it all imported OK - but the error on login to topology manager afterwards is that the snp user does not exist.
Although I initially used the 'Master Repository Creation' I then adaondoned this - dropped and recreated my Oracle user 'snpm' that owns the master repository and used the import repository approach.
I am trying to sign in as the standard SUPERVISOR user (that existed OK in the Hypersonic master repository that was exported to the ZIP file) and also trying other users that I know existed in the Hypersonic reporitory that I exported - same problem. I can see in Oracle SQL*Plus that in the SNP_USERS table the SUPERVISOR user exists.
If I do instead carry out a standard 'Create Master Repository' and do NOT try to import anything then it works OK and I can sign in to the Topology Manager as SUPERVISOR.

  • Safari can't establish secure connection in parental controls managed user account

    Hi,
Safari can't establish any secure connection in parental controls managed user account. Normal web sites open OK, but secure connections, like Gmail which requires https doesn't work. This is what I get instead:
Safari can’t open the page “https://www.google.com/accounts/ServiceLogin?service=mail&passive=true&rm=false& continue=http%3A%2F%2Fmail.google.com%2Fmail%2F%3Fui%3Dhtml%26zy%3Dl&bsv=llya694 le36z&scc=1&ltmpl=default&ltmplcache=2&from=login” because Safari can’t establish a secure connection to the server “www.google.com”.
Any ideas how to overcome this?

Do you have anti virus software installed, or Peer Guardian?
"https note: For websites that use SSL encryption (the URL will usually begin with https), the Internet content filter is unable to examine the encrypted content of the page. • HELP... Unable to alter any parental control settings- I get an error message immediately and the lock goes back on.

Is there a fix to the parental control problem – in Mountain lion? I've been unable to change any control settings for months...should have kept the family PC...this IMAC is garbage at this point.

Although one would think that re-creating the index could fix this problem, that’s not the case. What sometimes works is restarting the computer or doing some cache-cleaning — don’t ask me why, and I don’t know how to fix the problem when that doesn’t work either.
You may also want to take a look at the following thread, where another user reported the problem in his/her case was related to a difference in how the email address was written:
