Parental Controls for Ripped DVD/Movies for Apple TV

I would like to know if there is such a feature to add on a parental control to selected films on Apple TV or iTunes Home Sharing.
Obviously, kids can operate these things pretty well but what happens if we put something like a Texas Chansaw Massacre on there, next to Toy Story, that a young kid shouldn't see. Is there a way of putting a pin code on to this? or a restricted folder?
Thanks

you can use e.g. Subler to add an explicit tag to movie files, then adjust the parental control preference pane accordingly

  • 'Ripping' DVD movies for Windows

Is there anyone who could point me in the direction for an application that would allow me to rip dvd movies, but for Windows. All the other posts and applications I have found on the internet are for Mac, which is of no use to me.
    Any help is much appreciated!

Welcome to Discussions. Try this thread David Fernandez, "How To Copy DVDs to iPod using free software for Windows" #94, 02:32pm Nov 2, 2005 CDT. An alternative product is PQ DVD, which does it all in one app, but it does cost £35 if you want more than 8-12 mins. With the above, also be careful with sound tracks, as it is easy to get the directors cut instead of the actors, so always do a small test before doing a whole film.

  • ITunes 10.5 Parental Control Issue - Cannot Disable Check for Updates

We are looking at updating to iTunes 10.5 in a large company.
Normally we add the following key to lock parental controls and disable the check for software updates.
This locked or greyed out the check for updates check box. This does not seem to work in the 10.5 release.
This did work in iTunes 10.4.1.10.
Here is the registry key we are using.
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Apple Computer, Inc.\iTunes\Parental Controls\Default]
    "AdminFlags"=dword:00000101
    kParentalFlags_Locked
    0x00000001
    1
    kParentalFlags_DisableCheckForUpdates
    0x00000100
    256
Other parental control options seem to work.
    Any suggestions?

    Same problem here!
Setting the Keys in HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\blabla... works finde but neet to be able to set it global!

  • HT1657 Can you tell me the step by step procedure for renting a movie on Apple TV and playing it there only?

What are the exact steps for watching a movie on Apple TV? The Apple TV tells me to go to the desktop and accept the fee in my account. Then I start the movie on the desktop and then I go to the TV to watch it. I get charged twice!

Thanks for the question. The following resource provides a good step-by-step section on how to rent a movie on Apple TV:

  • Setting parental controls in an iTunes movie?

I know you can set parental controls in the iTunes program generally, but is there a way to tweak an indivusal movie parental controls? Or add parental controls to a single movie or TV show, or music song? I could not find this option when displaying a movies "info". I'd think iTunes would add a parental control settings the user can modify..?

Try going here and emailing the store about the issue

  • Can apple tv and roku access same ripped dvd movies

    Had 2 roku's. Like 'em.
Ripped dvd's and stored on external. (about 150 movies)
Just bought the new apple tv
Do I now need to import all of the already ripped dvd's into itunes library in order to watch them on my apple tv
    (thus creating another separate file)
Or perhaps if they were all in itunes library, could roku access them ?
Maybe there's no way around this... but using roku / plex worked well and it was easy to get artwork etc
I did duplicate / import a couple movies into itunes. Get artwork - doesn"t seem to work for dvd ripped movies ?
Nature of the beast i'm guessing.....
    Any advice / direction appreciated.
    Thanks

You should be able to stream the video directly to the apple tv via itunes, without copying and creating another large file.
Just drag the movie files to your itunes.  It will take a few seconds and will "import" the movies.  Once created, you can right click the movie  in itunes and then select get info.  from there, you can give custom information, and even assign an icon or picture for the movie.  Look on line and you should be able to find dvd covers for most movies.
I do this all the time with my movies and also tv shows.

  • Ripping DVD Menus for DVD Studio Pro 4

I have a company DVD which I don't have the original assets for. They want me to use the same menu as a submenu for a compilation DVD that I'm putting together. I can't import any files from the Audio or Video TS files. Is there a program which will let me rip just the menu to use? I've already used Handbrake to rip the movie elements, but can't find a way to rip the menu elements for use in DVDSP. Any help would be great, I really don't want to recreate the entire menu.

Not really anyway to do this with full functionality intact (unless you can use something like DVDAfterEdit to basically reedit the original DVD to add the new stuff... but that is quite complex...)
    However...
You can use MPEGStreamClip (free download) to rip the Menu VOBs to get the content back into a state that is usable by DVD-SP. If they are still menus then you can expeot a still version. If they are moving you can export the m2v and AC3 if they have sound. As all the menus are usually lumped into one place you may have to step through thm and use MPEGStreamClips editing facility to extract what you need... but it can be done. The only other problem then is the highlights - using a program like SubRip (PC only) you can rip the highlights from the menus but it can be a bit trial and error. Alternatively you could create new ones by using maybe a symbol or underline or some such and create them in Photoshop by using a frame grab of the ripped menus...
Thta's the way we've done it in the past when we've been faced with just such a problem (usually when we haven't created the original assets)
    Hope that helps

  • No space on C Drive for ripped DVD's :(

So, last night I decided to download the Videora IPod converter and their DVD Decryptor software. Everything was going great...it seemed like an easy process...BUT right before my DVD got decrypted (I used the cheap version of Titanic on dvd that came out before the Special Edition - the whole movie was on one disc) it said the capacity of that file would be over 55 MILLION kb. And we only have 26 some odd million left on our hard drive! I was seriously shocked...and dissapointed because I've really wanted to be able to use the IPod's video feature. Can someone please tell me if there's a way around using up so much space on your hard drive? I'd appreciate it. Thanks.

    Buy new hard drive.
250GB for ~$50 at CompUSA last week.
DVDs are between 4.5 & 9 GB each.
If you don't have enough space for one DVD, you have too little.
Generally, you should have at least 10-15% free space for the OS to work at it's best. If you have a 100GB hard drive, you should have 10-15GB free.

  • Parental Control: Allowed apps now ask for password

    Hello,
    Mac OS 10.7.2.
I have set up parental controls on my kids' accounts and I have turned on the restrict applications setting.
I have placed check box next to each app they are allowed to use, Mail, iTunes, specific games etc.
I have un-checked a few specific apps, TurboTax, etc, that they don't need access to.
When they log in and try to use their allowed applications, Mail, Safari, etc, it is asking them for an admin password on everything they are trying to open, even though the apps are checked on the 'allowed' application list.
Is this normal?? I thought it should only ask for a password on apps that are NOT on the allowed list..

Hello, I wondered if you got through to Microsoft and they managed to change your parental control options?  I am having the same problem as you with downloading apps on my son's phone - need parental control, but it doesn't let me carry it out comes out with a error code and says contact support.
I tried to contact Microsoft but they put me on hold - sending my call to America and India (was on hold for an hour or so).  I have logged a complaint and emailed Microsoft but still nobody gets back to me.
So currently have a  phone for my son but he cannot download apps.  Dont want to reinstall as he will have to change all his details on Xbox and all his avitars etc (friends) - we want to keep his same email address.
Driving me crazy and Microsoft not coming forward with any advice.  All I want to do is adjust my parental control to let my son download apps.
Appreciate any help please. Thank You

  • Best ATV-2 settings for ripping DVDs using Handbrake

I have a large dvd library that I want to get into itunes for the ATV-2 as well as the ability to use on my iOS4 devices. Can anyone share their experiences?

If you're talking about commercial, encrypted DVDs, the terms of use of these forums prohibit discussion of software or methods of breaking the encryption/copying them.
For unencrypted DVDs, Handbrake is one of the most recommended applications.
    Best of luck.

  • Download DVD movie for iTunes Store not showing up in my purchased items

I downloaded a DVD movie from the iTunes store but it's not showing up in my iTunes application or any where else that I can see. What am I doing wrong?

I am having the same problem. Have you heard anything back on this, or figured out anything that might help me as well?

  • Recommendations, please, for external DVD writer for my 2006 iMac. (Internal drive unable to write coherently.)

Recommendations, please, for an external DVD writer for my 2006 iMac whose internal drive is writing unreadable discs.

      Model Identifier:          iMac5,1
Processor Name:          Intel Core 2 Duo
      Processor Speed:          2.16 GHz
      Number Of Processors:          1
      Total Number Of Cores:          2
      L2 Cache:          4 MB
      Memory:          4 GB
      Bus Speed:          667 MHz

Thanks, A Brody.  Don't know what the PRAM battery is.  Here are more details of the fault ... Although I've had the iMac for 5 years this may be the first time I've tried copying a video recording onto the DVD drive (I've made lots of CD copies without a problem).  The folder and files all seem to be reproduced in identical order on the disc but my domestic DVD player cannot make sense of the recording, unlike the original source DVD from which the files originated.  The drive has always been noisy but I've never assumed it shouldn't be!  Does this fit your PRAM battery theory?  If so, please explain more.  Thanks.

  • Slightly off-topic: app for ripping dvd of film in public domain

    Hi
I want to use a few snippets of a film in the public domain, The Green Promise, in a music video for this flick I'm working on.
Archive.org, where I can download it, only has what they call a 512kb.mpeg4 version (I take it an mpeg4 export of a 512kb version). Youtube's version must be from that too cause full screen it looks just as cruddy.
I see where I can get the dvd from Amazon. You'd think that would be superior quality, no? If so, any app you would recommend to use to 'rip' it? One where I can rip segments instead of the whole would be best.

If it's non-protected, MPEG Streamclip will do the job and will allow saving to your choice of codecs. Streamclip is free, but you will need to purchase the QuickTime  MPEG2 Playback component from Apple ($20). Follow the instructions on the Squared 5 site for this.
Handbrake is an alternative, which I have not used in several years. As I recall, it outputs either an H.264 or X.264 file.
