Parental Controls forbids Dashboard widgets

On my user, (non-administrator) I turned on parental controls to check them out, then I turned them off a couple minutes later. I opened dashboard soon after, and it alerted me that some of my widgets were prohibited by Parental Controls.
I went to parental controls and turned them off again, and logged into Administrator and saw that they were off. Much to my dismay, I still couldn't use certain widgets that I downloaded. When I downloaded them again and tried to install them, dashboard just closed and nothing happened. When I clicked the dashboard icon again, it opened up fine, but the new widget wasn't there.
What should I do? Are there some prefs I should delete or what?
Thanks!

it's not the dashboard. it's parental controls. something did not get deleted there. make a new admin account log out of your account and log into the new admin one. go to system preferences->accounts, unlock the lock and enable and then disable parental controls on your main account. log back into it and see if the problem is still there.

  • Parental Control Troubleshooting

I tried to install the Guest Account and Parental control with few additions in the pre-selected software. As soon as I push the "lock icon" to close the "parental controls", the multicolor wheel do not stop rolling and I have to "force quit" from "parental control" window. Any help on this ?
    Thanks

Not to beat (or revive, as the case may be,) a dead horse, but...
    I have three Leopard computers:
A MacBook Pro (see tag at bottom of post,) which only has one account, so no Fast User Switching, and no parental controls. Dashboard works fine.
An eMac (1.25 GHz USB 2.0 model, 768 MB RAM, 160 GB hard drive, SuperDrive,) with two accounts, plus the Guest account turned on. Fast User Switching is on, and the Guest account has parental controls. Dashboard works fine in all three accounts, no matter what user switching I do.
A 12" PowerBook G4 (867 MHz VGA model, 640 MB RAM, 40 GB hard drive, Combo Drive,) with one account, plus the Guest account turned on. Fast User Switching is off, and the Guest account has parental controls. I have Dashboard disabled in the Guest account. Dashboard does not work in the main account, though. (I do have the security on this computer totally locked down. Every single Preference that even hints at "security" is on. Secure VM, FileVault, auto-logout after x minutes, login window requires typing user name and password, the works.) I've tried all the tricks, including turning off Parental Controls. This computer is also on its original software install. Yes, really. It has never been reformatted since I opened the box. It came with Jaguar, and has been upgraded to Panther, then Tiger, and now Leopard. I have deleted user accounts and created new ones, (the current user account is less than a month old;) and have done disk repair and permissions repairs. I know that Dashboard worked in Tiger on a different user account; but I honestly can't recall having tried Dashboard on the current user account in Tiger, much less in Leopard, until today.

  • Dashboard stops working when parental controls enabled

Don't say this is answered because the workaround suggested in another topic does not work. This needs to be fixed soon - very annoying. Here are the steps to reproduce.
    1. create 2 accounts.
    2. enable parental controls on one of them.
    3. set a time limit on the controlled account.
    4. login to the non-controlled account when the controlled account does not have access.
    5. access dashboard.
    6. note that it does not work (no widgets come up and you cannot add them back)
If you try the workaround it is only temporary and you lose all your widgets the next time the controlled account is locked. I think there is more than one way to reproduce this but is the most common. Also, the workaround doesn't always work. I think this is a serious bug that fails the "it just works" test. This was my first OS X purchase and probably my last if these type of bugs continue to go unanswered.

I had the same problem, Safari would not open at all in the accounts that had parent controls enabled. I resolved this by going into the admin account and making a copy of safari then pasting it into the library folders as well as the application folders. You can also paste a copy of safari into the other user accounts (desktop) from the admin account. Once that is done, open the parent controls  system  (check the applications to allow) Internet tab then check safari. Hope that works for you

  • Parentals Controls & The Google Dashboard Widget

I have setup IDs for each of my kids and disabled their access to Safari. However, they have discovered that the Google widget ignores the parental control setting and fires up Safari for them.
I have not found a way to completely eliminate their access to this widget.
Is there a way? Or is this a bug/security hole?

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. The problem didn't start until after June 8 and the Safari update. Those of us who installed the iLife 09 updater on June 4 didn't experience the problem. Did you also install Safari 4 at the same time. Safari 4 has broken the Google map function in iPhoto 09's Places. In every case it began right after installing the final version of Safari 4.

  • Dashboard Widgets Disappear Randomly

    Hi,
I've noticed that some of my dashboard disappear from time to time. When I try to add them again by re-downloading them, I get the message "do you want to replace existing", and by answering "no", the disappeared widget reappears with all it's settings intact.
I've read on the macrumours forum that someone else was also having this problem, but there has not been any resolution to the issue yet.
    Any ideas anyone?

  • Dashboard Widgets Gone

I have been using Dashboard on occasion and I have about 8-10 widgets set up (world time, weather, CBS news, etc.). All of a sudden yesterday, I went into Dashboard and all widgets were gone. I tried adding everything back, but whenever I tried to execute a function, Dashboard closed and sent me back to the desktop. Very strange.
Has anyone ever experienced this; or does anyone have a suggestion?
    Thanks in advance.

I think I may have answered my own question by reading further on in this forum. I found the below link which addresses this issue as it relates to parental controls. I'm pretty sure this is what caused the problem for me.
I still invite any additional thoughts.

I'm having the same issue, but with my iPhone 4 and the stock headset. When I hold down the button on the headset the phone vibrates but the audio prompt is not heard at all. Conversely, when the iPhone is connected to my bluetooth headset (Jawbone Prime), there is no such issue when activating voice dial through the Jawbone.

  • Parental Controls doesn't seem to work as desired

I've read many threads on this topic, but no solutions that work for me yet. I've setup time limits for both kid's accounts. Initially, I thought they were working. However, after each account "timed out", and I allowed additional time using my admin ID (even 15 minutes extra), the time limits no longer seem to work, at least the bedtime login limits. At first, using exact same settings on each account, and AFTER bedtime, the first account that I had allowed extra time for (2 days ago!) allowed login after bedtime.
Next, I tried this on the second account, allowing only 15 minutes extra time. Now my son can login to that account after bedtime. Looks like I can't trust the bedtime controls.
I've disabled parental controls shut down, used command option PR to clear memory, still same problem
Has anyone been successful using parental controls, or do I just stop trusting it?!?

My daughter's time limits were restricted to 30 min per day only, however she found out that rebooting the Mac, 2 or 3 minutes before her time expired, allowed her to start again with a new 30 min session again... over and over.
Time limits file gets corrupted more often than expected, so I solved my issue with the time limits by recreating the file, as follows:
    a) Login with your credentials, assuming your accounts has Full Admin rights.
    b) Launch a 'Terminal' session. Mine was located at Finder -> Applications ->Utilities -> Terminal
    c) Login as root using your credentials with the following command:
Last login: Tue Mar 23 21:20:02 on console
    imac-3155:~ myadminuser$ sudo su -
    Password:
    imac-3155:~ root#
    d) Now, as root, go to the following directory:
    imac-3155:~ root# cd /Library/Managed Preferences/mydaughtersname/
    imac-3155:mydaughtersname root# ls -al
    total 80
    drwxr-xr-x  10 root  admin    340 May 18 20:49 .
    drwxr-xr-x   3 root  admin    102 May 18 20:45 ..
    -rw-r--r--   1 root  admin     86 May 18 20:45 com.apple.applicationaccess.new.plist
    -rw-r--r--   1 root  admin     81 May 18 20:45 com.apple.dashboard.plist

    -rw-r--r--    1 root  admin      398 May 18 20:45 com.apple.familycontrols.timelimits.plist
    -rw-r--r--   1 root  admin     80 May 18 20:45 com.apple.familycontrols.logging.plist
    -rw-r--r--   1 root  admin    226 May 18 20:45 com.apple.iChatAgent.plist
    -rw-r--r--   1 root  admin     75 May 18 20:45 com.apple.mcxprinting.plist
    -rw-r--r--   1 root  admin     97 May 18 20:45 com.apple.systempreferences.plist
    -rw-r--r--   1 root  admin  11821 May 18 20:45 complete.plist
    e) Delete the file containing time limits config
    mac-3155:Managed Preferences root# rm com.apple.familycontrols.timelimits.plist
    f) Logout from Terminal
    g) Logout from your account
    h) Now my daughter was able to log back in and the 30 minutes Time Limit was Up and running working as expected, regardless how many times she tried to reboot the Mac...
I hope it helps to those out there.

  • How to: Embed YouTube in Ibook/Location of File, Open in Dashboard Widget Code?

    Hi,
I am new to the whole Mac experience and loving it after 25 years locked into the MSGATES paradigm. I have been playing around with Ibook and have made a book. I would like to embed a You Tube file and it seems it is not as simple as slecting an HTML widget and then dropping in the Youtube embed code. Or is it?
Instructions are to create a widget and then drag the widget code into the HTML widget in iBooks. I was able to make it as far as to learn I can make my YouTube video a custom dashboard widget using the "File," "Open in Dashboard" method in Safari.
Once I did this I was able to select the portion of the YouTUBE page and click to make the YouTube widget. Presto, easy as pie. But where is the .wdgt file (and/or other related files to this custom dashboard widget) stored? I was able to find the widget directory in my root but only the preinstalled widgets were there--not the the widget I was able to make with the "File," "Open in Dashboard" method.
Is this the most straightforward way to embed a You Tube file, or is there another way?
It seems this should/can be as easy as just dropping the embed code into the HTML widget in iBooks. perhaps a consideration for the next version of iBooks...

We use a container thats ratio matches the video and insert following format into the folio overlay controls for Web Content: https://www.youtube.com/embed/ jyOFS5lAG68    *PLEASE NOTE: there is a space between the embed/ the video ID.  Remove it to see how the video looks when you paste the link.
We found this works on both iOS and Android.

  • Is it possible to set up parental control in MultiPoint Server 2012?

    Hello everyone!
Is it possible to set up parental control in MultiPoint Server 2012. I'd like to filter adult web sites.
    Kind regards,
    Pavel

I found an issue with Multipoint Dashboard that when student select to signout and then select "Cancel" to signout to go back to the session, the Multipoint Dashboard filtering is no longer applied to the session.
    here is the scenario -
     - Student login to the Multipoint server using the end point device as an standard user.
     - The Multipoint Dashboard has the configuration to "limit the website to all desktop". "cnn.com" only
     - The student session, limits the use of the web browser to only to cnn.com - this is working.
     - Studen open an app like notepad - click save --> prompted him to where to save the file.
do not save the file. leave the "Save as" windows open.
     - Click Start (left bottom corner)
     - Click the account’s name on the top right corner, Click Sign Out
     - It will prompt you with a warning that there is a file open and needs to be saved
     - "Signout anyway" or "Cancel"
     - student select to "Cancel"
     - He is now back to the session
This will allow the student/account logged in to bypass the web filtering

Go to system preferences, mission control, and unselect "Show Dashboard as a Space".  While you're there, you may want to make dashboard set to a hot corner "Hot Corners" button at the bottom.

  • Installed Parental Controls on MBP 10.7.5. Now it's unusable (exc admin's acct).  Constant message pops up- "You don't have permission to use (whatev) app." U can click: ok, always allow, allow once, but no matter what, message continues and u can't work

    Hi,
I installed Parental Controls on our MacBookPro 10.7.5. Now it's unusable (except for my  admin's acct). Constant messages keep popping up that say  "You don't have permission to use (whatever) application." You have the option to  click: ok, always allow, or allow once, but no matter what you select, the messages keep popping up and prevent you from working.  I have searched these forums, and all I have found is that you are supposed to uninstall the application (Spotify, dashboard, etc). Deinstalling every app is not a solution.
If the parental controls just don't work - and frankly I'm tired of wasting all this time trying to fix the bugs - can someone recommend a program that will restrict certain user accounts to any websites I haven't specified?
Thanks for any help or advice.

Thanks Bob for that very fast reply!
But neither "Modifying hal configuration" nor "Using the Desktop Environment settings" (xfce) worked. So I tried the "I don't want this crap, how do I turn it off?" solution and well it works
Maybe I turn it back on in a month or so.. but for now i'm fine with no hot plugging but a working keyboard...
    Thanks and Bye!

  • Dashboard widgets vanish after recent security update

I just updated my 12" iBook G4 with the most recent security update, and now my Dashboard widgets vanish on load. I've tried repairing permissions and deleting both the dashboard prefs and DashboardCache. I've killed and rekilled the Dock process which handles Dashboard, and rebooted, and the darn widgets still vanish.
I don't want to have to reinstall OS X. Is there some way to fix this?

Some games lately can push graphic cards further and harder.
Check PC graphic/game forums to see if you can find a relationship.
No way in Mac OS to regulate or control gpu fan, monitor temp (?) or other things all taken for granted on PC and Windows.
SmcFanControl 2.2.x - at least you can boost 3 of the system fans and change the default and set profiles for work loads. Try a "game profile" of 1500 rpm.
If - and I assume the 8800GT is probably starting to stress and strain and slow death - it would happen in Windows also, if you have it installed.
8800GT: people blamed 10.6 and other updates as if it caused their card to fail. Unlikely though maybe with a card that was marginal or had trouble to begin with.
There weren't nvidia drivers in security update, but were in 10.6.4; in SL Graphics Update 1.0; and there is/was Mac OS X CUDA 3.x patch/update also you should be using. There were updates for GTX 285 that should have included the 8800GT as well probably.
When you system crashes, or before there is a software update, by all means ---
CLONE YOUR SYSTEM / RUN DISK WARRIOR (don't rely on just Apple DU First Aid)
Easy to blame an update for a pre-existing issue that was present.
And always have a backup you can boot from of older version of OS X (even 10.6.3).
Some people have gone back to 10.6.0 and then only up to 10.6.3.
Try a clean system install on a newly zeroed hard drive and test everything.
    Wait for new graphic drivers.
Plan on ATI 5870 or 5770.
