Parental Controls Have Blown Away My iChat

Thinking my teenager was too much involved with chatting when he would do better with homework, I set up an account called homework, which cut out all iChat (no buddies acceptable) and limited his Safari'ing. But, right away -- in our family account -- all the buddies went gray and no chatting was possible, not for my son, not for anyone! And I seem unable to call them back. Turning off parental controls seems unproductive.
Turned on parental controls for one account, lost iChat universally. HOW CAN I GET ICHAT BACK? (Yes, I'd like to keep my Homework account working, but I'll give it up if absolutely necessary)

Hi Dialoguy,
Do you have your Mac set up that the Family acount is also a Non Admin Account ?
AT THIS STAGE DO NOT DELETE THE HOMEWORK ACCOUNT
Is the AIM or .mac account he signs in with in Homework the same one used in the Family account ?
Would it be even if it worked ? (had some allowed Buddies)
I have seen one occassion when Parental Controls were not to the perosons liking and they deleted the whole Mac USer Account without turning Off Parental Controls which caused them endless problems.
There was a recent Post about the fact that Jabber accounts can not be blocked (and there are AIM Transports out there to get around any AIM name blocks).
EDIT to that info. iChat help says Jabber and Bonjour is disabled at that time.
If the Family account is not the Mac's Admin acount account I would log on as the Admin account and try turning Parental Controls off there.
I would also check that the Family account if a standard one does not show itself to have Parental controls.
The documentation in iChat help states it is for one Mac User account at a time.

Using Parental Controls with iChat
If you are using Mac OS X v10.4 or later, and have your computer set up with other, nonadministrator user accounts, you can control who the other users of the computer can chat with. Using Parental Controls you can add only the buddies you want the other user to chat with.
To add buddies to other users' parental controls:
1. Open System Preferences and click Accounts.
2. Select a user account and then click Parental Controls.
3. Select the iChat checkbox and then click Configure.
4. Click the Add button and select a buddy from the list.
5. If there are no buddies in the list, click New Person and enter the buddy's .Mac account or AIM screen name.
Only the buddies you add will be available for chats.
Parental Controls work only with AIM buddies. If you use Parental Controls, local buddies and Jabber buddies will not be available to the user you set up with Parental Controls.

I can replicate this with a test Mac User account using the same iChat name and Fast User Switching.
Closing IChat and restarting does not help.
The Test account does not have Multiple Logins allowed at present.

  • Think parental controls have been installed on Mac book pro

    Hello,
Does anyone know how to check if parental controls have been installed on my Mac. I have a lot of issues going to certain websites and my safari was having issues loading. Plus I had weird files on my disk that would set to different numbers. I'm not a child and believe someone linked my laptop. Please help remove controls.

    Privateperson87,
to check if any user is under parental controls, log in as your administrative user and open the Users & Groups pane of System Preferences. It will show your users on the left-hand side of the window, and whether those users are administrative, “standard” (i.e. non-administrative), or “managed” (i.e. under parental controls).

  • Why do Lion's Parental Controls have problems?

When I try to open a restricted application on my iMac, it says you aren't allowed to open it, but it keeps on bouncing. Can someone tell me why?

I am also having similar issues - I have controls in place for both week days and weekends, limited to 1hr and 3hrs respectively as well as a limit between 8pm and 6am.
The account is saying that I can login at 12am, this was at 7pm. When we try to login, it also says the allocated time has expired.
    This is wacky.
    Any ideas?
Have you checked your account in System Preferences > Users And Groups and checked that the Parental Controls box isn't ticked for your account?

  • Parental controls webfilterproxyd running away

My daughters Macbook has started overheating and the internet connection almost grinds to a halt (it seems to have started a month or so ago and got a bit worse since). On investigation i found under all process in the activity monitor that webfilterproxyd was making the cpu run at 75% and more. I tried quitting the process and restarting, but the only way i have been able to get the laptop sorted is to stop parental controls entirely. Not something i am keen on.
Does anyone know if this a known issue and what can be done to fix it?
The laptop is running all latest updates etc - i think it is 10.8.2. Mainly used for internet usage and iMovie editing.

  • IChat Screen Sharing & Parental Controls

We have iChat 4 and 10.5.6 parental controls working on our granddaughters imac. Normal iChat works fine. We have parental controls set to only allow ichat with us using AIM profiles. Does anyone have any suggestions to help us figure out why we cannot screen share? We get the descriptive error "could not establish connection?"

    Hi,
Parental Control in Leopard does allow you to set some things for iChat and Mail.
The setting in iChat apply only to the AIM Buddy List (Any Screen name that logs into AIM).
It Disables Bonjour and Jabber form being used so you can not even list contacts listed in the Address Book that have either a Jabber/Googletalk ID or refer to other contacts that are Bonjour Only.
From what you say you have already worked this bit out.
Does Screen Sharing work if Parental Controls Is Off ?
I am not aware that Parental Controls effecting Screen Sharing otherwise.

  • Parental Controls Always Allow App issue with Blender app (3d modeling app)

    To whom this may concern,
I have a 3D modeling app called blender. I have installed it on my mac os running on lion (os 10.7) currently.
What I want to do. Always run this app on an account that has parental controls set up on my mac. The blender app would be a part of the allowed apps for the account.
Here's where I have my problem:
I have set it up to run on an account that has parental controls set up.
The problem I keep running in to is that every time I try to run blender I receive a popup window that says the app is not allowed and gives me three options: always allow, allow once, or okay (and close without trying to open).
Everytime I try to click always allow and enter my password, the process just repeats the next time I open the app. This make me believe that perhaps there is some sort of executable that the blender app uses before starting that the parental controls is stopping and even when I allow blender to start, there is something else not being allowed through. Any ideas on how I can work around this (obviously I want to keep parental controls on to prevent access to other apps)?
I'm not overly computer savvy but I can give some more info as requested if my question needs further explanation/documentation
I guess the best way to see the problem for yourself is to download blender and try using it on an account with parental controls, heh heh.
This is more of an annoyance having to enter the passcode everytime I want to use this wonderful app.
    Thanks for any help.

    Solution:
I updated to OSX Mavericks and the parental controls issue went away for Blender.
    Hurray!

  • Parental Controls: Destroys Firefox Cookies

After turning on parental controls, and after adding specific sites to "always allow" Firefox was thereafter unable to use any cookies. I tried everything (deleting the cookies, rebooting, reinstalling Firefox, etc.). The same problem was not occurring in Safari, so it seems to be Firefox-specific.
After I disabled the parental controls, the problem persisted.
After I deleted the parental control profile for the account, the problem went away and Firefox works normally now.
I therefore conclude that Parental Controls have two issues:
1 Disabling content filters is not as thorough as deleting the parental control profile.
2 Parental controls have a negative impact on cookie use in Firefox.

    Thank you for your reply.
In addition to the above, I believe it is a major error to disallow access to any and all secure sites (https://). Yes, the data is encrypted and can't be scanned and filtered, but that's an arbitrary elimination of half the Internet with a setting that's buried in the software.
There should be a little checkbox in the parental controls that says:
*[ ] Allow secure sites (https)*
Most sites start with a non-secure page and then take the user to a secure site. The filter should review that initial page, then give the go-ahead for the secure portions.
Apple must remember that the purpose of an Internet filter is to remove all the garbage, not control people's computing lives. I reluctantly return to Intego (http://intego.com) for a solution.

  • Parental controls a nuisance since Yosemite

Since the change to Yosemite Parental Controls "misbehaves":
    - when granting extra time the extra time is "lost" whenever the user logs out or even goes to sleep mode. Until 10.9 that wasn't the case and extra time was kept for the remainder of the day.
    - whenever any other change is performed in parental controls (e.g. granting access to a new website), extra time is lost as well and the (parentally controlled) user is logged out.
    - stupid but not a real problem: the audio warning that time is about to expire is still English-only but the English text is now read with German pronounciation ("parental controls log out in xxx minutes").
Any idea if this can be rectified by the user or is a bug thats need fixing. (I do hope it's not a feature).

    Hi,
I have experienced the same problems, and others.
For example, the website blocker "Allow access to only these websites" is not working as expected. All allowed websites work ok (as expected). However, several websites not on the "allowed" list are accessible but some random ones are not. There does not seem to be a pattern.
Under yosemite I cannot find any way of resetting the parental controls or getting them to work as expected. I have searched for a solution including deleting the files in /Library/Managed Preferences, turning off the controls and turning them back on again and rebooting. I wonder now if Yosemite stores the control files in the /Library/Managed Preferences directory at all any more. The files correctly disappear when you turn the controls off, but then when you turn them back on again the last known configuration is restored, so they really do not go away and supposedly are stored somewhere else. But where?
The App management controls do seem to work ok. However, unless the web blocking code is made to work then parental controls right now are useless (actually, worse than useless as they are misleading people into thinking sites are being blocked when they are not).
Parental Controls have often been buggy in Mac OSX and I am not sure why. I can imagine some parents/employers getting litigious.

  • Is there a way to retrieve messages denied by Parental controls?

I'll deal with how this happened later, but somehow my parental controls for my kid's email alias started applying to my email account and alias. (at least I think that's what happened). Is there anyway to retrieve emails from the last several days that apparently may have been rejected by parental controls?
Your help is MUCH appreciated. Here I thought I was one of those 2% experiencing difficuluties on .mac and was waiting patiently only to discover this madness.
    --A.
      Mac OS X (10.4.9)

What does your  > Sys Prefs > Accounts > {your account} > Parental Controls have in place now?
If necessary, try removing (only temporarily) any Parental controls put in place on the kid's account, see if that fixes your problem on your Mail account, then re-establish those controls on the kid's account.
If the mails that you were expecting are not on the server, i.e., outright rejected/bounced, probably not much you can do about those except ask the senders to resend.
Be sure to doublecheck the kid's account info, like making sure (s)he is not using your login username.

  • Mac OS 10.6.8 Parental Controls interfere with Firefox by preventing access to websites and plug ins

Mac OS 10.6.8 iMac, running FireFox 15 in grade school computer lab. When Parental controls are enabled in system preferences Firefox does not work properly. Can't use Google to search from the search bar at the top, can't access plug ins, there are even a few websites that can't be used. An example is digitalpassport.org from Common Sense media. Students can't access to log into their accounts. Parental Controls have been running on these macs for over a year with no issues. I thought it was the latest Firefox version giving us a problem but I updated to Firefox 16 today and the problem persists. If I turn off parental controls, Firefox works perfectly. I was not previously limiting applications, just blocking youtube and facebook. I tried limiting applications and then allowing all of them but that didn't help. What am I missing? Also, I can't access Mozilla support pages either when Parental Controls are enabled.

Check the PLUGIN UPDATES! Shockwave and Java were outdated and needed re-installation on mine! Took a couple of efforts with restarts but it is obvious that it solved my problems! Firefox Mozilla Toolbar 'Help' > 'Firefox Help' > lower right side of page displays link to Plugin Update review....

  • Google Chromecast stopped work - Parental controls...

    Hi
I have been using a Chromecast to watch Netflix on my Sony Bravia TV and it has worked fine for several months. Now it has stopped working and I see the message "Chromecast connected to -BT Hub name- but can't access the internet":
The only thing that I can think of that has changed is my I'm on hte BT Parental Controls trial. This allows me to restrict internet access at hte household/router level. I've disabled these completely (see screenshot below) and reconfigured the Chromecast, including a factory reset, but I can't seem to get past this message.
All other internet access works fine - nothing is blocked. I've even unboxed my 2nd Chromecast and set that up and it has the same issue.
Could it be that the Parental Controls have changed hte settings in the Hub? Maybe somethign to do with UPnP?
    Any help welcomed.
    Richard

    Hi,
I have had the same problem and have been tearing my hair out trying to solve it!!
The solution I found was as follows:
go into hub manager and do the following
    turn off smart set up
    switch off Upnp control
Then log into My BT and turn off parental controls and delete parental control settings.
This last action is the most important part as I already guessed ti was the parental controls stopping the Chromecast from accessing the internet, but turning off the parental controls didn't work alone!
although this doesn't help with keeping your children safe, there are other means to control what they access on the internet and until BT sort out this problem I won't be using their parental controls.
    I hope this helps
My kids are happy now they can watch Netflix and Play films.

  • HT2900 Hi Is this parental control specific to a computer only ??

For example, I wish to set some parental controls on my home network so that when my children log into their iPods or PC's or iPads that they are restricted from accessing certain content ?
Can this be done by setting a parental control on the main computer only or does it need to be done on every device, or with my ISP
    Thanks

That would be the user account on the computer. Parental controls have no connection with an Apple ID or iTuens Store account.
There is no way to globally manage parental controls on all devices. Parental controls on the Mac are completely separate from controls on an iOS device. For a Mac, you set the parental controls for the user's account in Mac OS X (in the System Preferences) or, as Camelot indicated, on a Mac OS X Server, something few home users have or are willing to set up.
For an iOS device, you would set up the controls on each device individuall unless you want to obtain and learn a mobile device management system such as Apple Configurator, JAMF's Casper, or another such solution. For most home users it's easist just to set up the iOS devices separately.
    Regards.

  • Parental controls suddenly activated - without us ...

    Hi there,
BT parental controls have suddenly been activated without us asking for it. I noticed it first when trying to access Facebook. I then found out my own website is being blocked (despite no suspicious content!) and as a result also my e-mail. That's a massive problem as I work from home and need my e-mail. I phoned BT last night (Sunday) the call centre told me we'd get a call back today. We didn't. I phoned again tonight and the call centre assured me I'd get a call back tomorrow. Really?
I'm loosing money by not being able to access my e-mail. How do I stop this?
When logging into "My BT" the extra's says: "Parental Controls is being activated on your account and will be available in the next 24 hours. Please log in again later to manage your account."
It's been saying that for at least 48 hours. I cannot change the settings.
Any help would be much appreciated! Thank you in advance.

  • Parental controls out of control

Each time I reopen iTunes the parental controls are set to "clean" for podcasts. This results in some of my podcast updates to be blocked (the dreaded exclamation mark). Opening preferences, selecting "parental controls" and allowing "explicit" podcasts sets the parental controls properly for me (I'm the parent, after all). I authenticate, and the probelm is fixed. Before I dismiss the prefs pane, I click the lock to prevent changes.
The trouble is that the problem reoccurs the next time I open iTunes. The parental controls have reset. How do I tell iTunes that dirty words are OK with me...forever?
[I am administrative user on my mac. Other limited user accounts exist, but are rarely used, i.e. I'm pretty sure they are no factor. I do have sufficient privileges to set parental controls.]
    iMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.9)   iTunes 7.1.1 (5)

Why do you want to give parental controls to an administrator account? That makes no sense. I suggest you disable administrator access on the account you created, then use an account that has administrator access to establish parental controls on the non-administrator account.
