Parental Controls help needed

I'm a little confused on parental controls.
Applications logging: Nothing shows up at all. Does something have to be done to activate this? Does it only log certain (i.e. Apple) applications?
Websites Visited: Does this only log Safari visits, or will it work with Firefox too? It started working and then just stopped logging.
Chat: I realize that parental controls only works for iChat. Is there something else for other chat programs? Is there a way to limit access to other chat programs (there are so many) to force iChat use so it can be monitored?
Thanks

Still not working. It logged some website and chat activity for about three days and then nothing. I have tried turning on and off, restarting machine - still nothing. I am not sure about time limits or other restrictions - as far as I know nothing about Parental Controls is working at all.
I realize this is "user to user" help. Is there an "official" place to get support or report this as a bug?

  • Wtih Parental Controls on, need to allow run application from CD

    Hello
I have restricted my sons access/login using the parental controls and everything is working well except that some of his apps run from CD i.e. Wiggles stuff
Anyway, with parental controls on his login does not allow these to run, we get a permission denied error. Is there any preference/control in Tiger or Leopard that will allow his apps to run?
    Thanks
    Rick

Boot Camp is most likely to work, but requires that you restart the computer to change OSes; nearly all Windows applications will work through this method.
Parallels Desktop and VMware Fusion run Windows from inside Mac OS X through emulation. Applications which require direct hardware access likely won't work, and this method is slower than Boot Camp. It is more convenient to use, as no restarts are needed.
CrossOver Mac and CrossOver Games translate the Windows instructions directly to Mac OS X ones. This is the cheapest method if you don 't already have Windows and the least compatible one.
Stating which applications you want to use will enable more specific advice to be provided.

  • Parental Controls: I need a range that starts at 10 minutes

I realize my family is NOT typical, but for reasons I won't detail here we need a daily access limit range that starts at 10 minutes.
The range in 10.5.3 starts at 30 minutes.
Are there any known hacks to change that low end setting to 10 minutes?
If any Apple engineer wants to understand why 30 minutes is not a brief enough bottom limit they can email me at [email protected]

A friend of mine (Andrew M) suggested the following hack to change the parental controls setting. Note this hack requires editing a root controlled plist. We don't yet know if the hack will persist after reopening the GUI controller.
Still, it suggests a fix others may wish to explore further.
    download pseudo
run plist editor via pseudo (runs plist editor as root)
(drag plist editor on top of pseudo)
    open /Library/Managed Preferences/[child account name]/com.apple.familycontrols.timelimits.plist
in plist editor, go to root/limits-list/0/allowances/timelimitseconds and set to however many seconds you want
    do same thing for root/limits-list/1/allowances/timelimitseconds
    save

  • Parental Controls solution needs a little more tho...

    Folks,
Just joined BT and am disappointed by the Parental Controls.
The practicality with 3 stroppy teenagers of getting to all of their devices (mix of Laptops, IPADS, Smart Phones) and installing Macafee S/W on every device in a secure way makes it a non-starter.
I was impressed by the Homehub 4 I received but couldn't get it to work with my old Modem/Router to use OPENDNS (I knew HomeHub doesn't allow DNS changes).
Ended up buying a new router. Cost a lot but what price is worth keeping the unacceptable face of the Internet out of your house.
Anyway - What do people think - Should BT offer a whole home solution like OPENDNS - perhaps through their own DNS servers as they are so clearly keen for thir customers to use them.
    Rgs
    Simon

BT need to do something. I recently had an issue with someone seeing something accidentally and have tried the following.
Firstly we have a Macbook Pro and an iPad so not so many devices but with a need to do something.
    1. Installed McAfee (Family Protect I think it was called?) as offered by BT. It needed to be running as a background app on the Macbook Pro and I immediately had performance issues. It affected my download speed and PING went from a typical 20 to 120. It also for some reason affected the displaying of images which was good but surely not on CBBC. Gave up and removed it.
    2. Went to Symantecs website and noticed they had a free offering, so installed it. Must work in a similar way to McAfee as I had the same performance issues. So, removed it.
    3. Then went to OpenDNS and installed their free Home Parental Controls. Because of not being able to change the DNS settings on my HH3 I changed the settings on the Macbook Pro and the iPad individually and since it has worked very well. The only issue I have had is that you can't do much about images. My solution for the images issue has been to switch from Google to Bing as my search engine. It seems that OpenDNS does a fairly good job of dealing with Images and Videos when you search with Bing. OpenDNS can instruct Bing to block these but it can't instruct Google. There was no performance hit in using OpenDNS.
This is now my default position which I am trialling.
I have now given my granddaughter affected by the accidental viewing her own account and as OSX has Parental Controls built in I have now restricted her account so that she can only view websites in an acceptable list and no others. If OpenDNS proves satisfactory I will release the shackles and allow more access. It would be good if she could do her own school research unsupervised but not until I am happy. BT need to do something that works and support families.
Out of interest for those with IOS devices, IOS 7 is out this week and I understand that Safari has been beefed up with Parental Controls, perhaps that will offer is hope.
In addition OSX Mavericks is out this autumn and again I am expecting the Parental Controls to be beefed up.

  • Pulsatile Linear Actuator Control - Help Needed

    Hi,
I have a VI that controls the speed of a linear actuator, which is placed within a case structure. A limit switch input switches
the case structure between forward and reverse. This allows the actuator to move in a continuous motion either forward and
reverse. What I would like to achieve is a pulsatile movement. The linear actuator operates for a set time and completely off
    for a set time.
I have tried various approaches with the elapsed time function, alternating wait times but just can't seem to get this, any help
would be greatly appreciated, I have attached the VI.
    Thanks

    A few things:
Are you using the Run Continuously button?
If so, stop and put this into a proper loop or state machine.
I don't think the Elapsed Time function is what you're looking for.
I think you want to use Time Delays between changing the output on your digitals.
Take some time with the LabVIEW tutorials. They'll help you a bunch here.

Anyone know a link talking of desing in the netbeans more that the basic?(English or french or anyway any other language it's will stay more easy to understand than the move of the components in my interface)
How to select deselect blue anchor when I rezising to select what components will affect another one?
I know it's suppose to be more easy but maybe I do sometinhg wrong when I use the desing view I consider using another ide now ...

This is a forum for matters concerning the Java programming language, not for the NetBeans IDE. Try to find a NetBeans forum for your NetBeans problems.
I believe there's one on nabble.com and another on java-forums.org.

  • Parental Controls on WRT1900AC

Hooked this up and love the speed boost at home. Question is: every review said there was an option to set time frames and time limits on devices under Parental Controls. This was one of my main reasons for getting it. Unfortunately it looks like there is just an on/off switch. Am I missing something? If not will this be coming in an update?? If not can you please add it to your list?!
    Thanks!

To set time frames and time limits on devices under Parental Controls, you need to access your Linksys Smart Wifi Account then click and enable Parental Control. After that, select the device that you want to restrict access from the Restrict Internet access on list and click "Specific Times". Here's how to do that: http://kb.linksys.com/Linksys/ukp.aspx?pid=80&vw=1&articleid=25627

  • My iTunes parent control keeps giving me the same error message. "Parent control preferences could not be unlocked. You may need to reinstall iTunes. "I have uninstalled ant reinstalled iTunes that 4 time now and I still can't get on. Can anyone help?

My iTunes parent control keeps giving me the same error message. “Parent control preferences could not be unlocked. You may need to reinstall iTunes. “I have uninstalled ant reinstalled iTunes that 4 time now and I still can’t get on. Can anyone help?

Experimental advice ... but, plausibly, the preference files containing the parental control setting may be damaged. If so, removing the iTunes preference files may help.
For the basic technique, see the "Remove iTunes preference files" section from the "User-specific troubleshooting" section of the following document:
iTunes for Windows Vista or Windows 7: Troubleshooting unexpected quits, freezes, or launch issues
To see those folders, you'll need to first set your PC to view hidden files and folders
In your Start menu, open Computer.
In your Organise menu, select Folder Options.
In the View tab, make sure that "Show hidden files and folders" is selected, and Hide extensions for known file types is unchecked.
    Click OK.
Prior to doing the preference file rebuilds: Best to make a note of any custom preferences you have set up for your iTunes. (Rebuilding pref files returns preferences to their defaults ... so you'll likely have to set some of those custom preferences up again from scratch.) Also make a note of any third-party plugins/add-ons you have installed. You may have to reinstall those after the rebuilds.
Things to watch out for during the rebuilds
Rebuilding the preference files in the \Local\ location causes the iTunes license agreement to run. So you'll need to agree to that again.
Rebuilding the preference files in the \Roaming\ location causes the iTunes Setup Assistant to run. When prompted to do so, do not add files to your iTunes library. (Otherwise you'll end up with a library full of duplicates.)

  • I made my main account a parental control account and when I accessed the account created as admin, at the Parental Control options I deleted my main account and now I can't get back in it. I need help with this problem.

I made my administrator account a parental control account, at the time of creating it, the system asked for my administrator password, to restart the computer, and the new account was created. When I accessed that account at the parental control menu I could see my main account on the list and i deleted the account from that list, and now i'm trying to get back to it but I'm not able to because every time i restart the computer brings me back to the account I created. I searched for help on the web and it says to go to users and select the account I want to restore but I can't do it. Please help.

User account – restore missing admin

  • Admin acct. with parental controls.  Help!

Yesteday I started a new user acct for my kids with some restrictions. Now when I am logged in as the Admin (my only other acct right now) some of the restrictions are applying to MY acct as well - most importantly I cannot access system preferences so I cannot change the accounts. It is restricting me from the programs I specified for the other acct but it is not restricting the sites I can access in Safari. I didn't know it was so easy to change an admin acct by accident!
Does anyone have any ideas? Do I need to start with the install disc? Thanks so much.

..."I tried the ssh:// and safari would not recognize the address."...
Ok, that means the "Allow supporting programs" control hasn't been selected, which is unfortunate for situations like this, but good for locking down the account.
The thing that is strange is that it really should not be possible for this situation to arise from the GUI - normally it won't let "Parental Controls" to be configured on an "admin" account, a managed account can't be promoted to "admin", and given that there are only two user accounts on the computer (one "admin", one "managed"), it shouldn't be possible to demote the "admin" in order to apply limitations to it.
Without getting a better idea of what has happened, it's hard to be specific about what commands to use to resolve the issue, although restoring the "NetInfo" database to default settings probably would clear things up. With just two users, this might not be a bad idea, but before proceeding further, it would be important to confirm that the computer has not been configured with a lot of custom groups, sharepoints, automounts, etc...
..."Is it possible to reboot from the install disc and do something that would help (without actually reinstalling)?"...
Another approach might be to enable the "root" user using the install disk, eg. by following the instructions in the document linked below - except assign a password to the "System Administrator" account. After rebooting, log in with username "root" and the new password.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.4/en/mh655.html
The "root" account is "all powerful" - the usual safeguards in place to protect the system from eg. mistakes by the user or security holes in software, don't apply to "root" so only log in to do what needs to be done, then log out immediately - for example, to respond to this post, log back in to your regular account - don't launch Safari while logged in as "root".
Hopefully, it will be possible to access "System Preferences" while logged in as "root", allowing you to either reconfigure the existing users (remove parental controls, make sure the main user is still "admin"), or create a new account (allowing it to administer the computer) for further troubleshooting...
If things work out, disable the "root" account right away (instruction, more or less, are in this document - just choose "Disable Root User" instead of "Enable Root User").

  • Missing Parental Controls Pane! Help!

For some time I've not been able to access some apps of mine because of Parental Controls blocking them, I know my Admin password and all but apparently the Parental Preferences are 'missing and not available', please help. I really need and love the apps that the Other Admin person some how managed to block from use and also some how managed to get rid of the Startup Disk, Sharing and Parental Control Preferences from the System Preferences, magically. The Icons and names of them are still there but it says 'Could not load [Name] Preferences Pane'. Please please help D:
By the way, I'm using a Macbook Air, updated to version 10.9, But I don't even know if that would make my macbook a mavericks, since it's the only Operating system that's 10.9 on Mac OS X.

iTunes needs an administrator account name and password to lock parental controls; i.e. you need to set Windows to require a password to login to your account before you can lock the controls.

  • NO HELP FROM VERIZON - Parental Controls/Family Safety

I need to change the parental controls on my daughter's account with MSN provided by Verizon.  But, parental controls no longer exist.  So, I'm directed to "Family Safety".  In order to get to "Family Safety" I'm directed to remove parental controls from my daughter's account.  I click on the button to remove parental controls and get an error message "The page you have requested does not exist, has moved, or is temporarily down."  After trying with on-line support from Verizon for about 1/2 hour, the person helping me said I needed to call Verizon for assistance.  So, I call Verizon for assistance.  After being on the phone for 40 minutes with a tech support person, the answer I get back is that "we no longer support parental controls and if you need assistance you have to go to a local technician".  Or, I can call MSN.  So, I get the phone number for MSN who refer me back to Verizon.  I don't see how a "local technician" (the person I talked to said to take my computer in to somebody for them to help) can really assist with a service provided by MSN and Verizon!  This is absolutely crazy.  Has anyone else had this issue and actually received help?  If so, can you tell me what worked?

    Hi Annoyed2,
Sorry about the experience you have had thus far.  We have discontinued the MSN portal partner service.  We no longer support the MSN email service.  The change was made by Microsoft to upgrade to MSN Live.  I do apologize for the inconvenience.
    Thank you for choosing Verizon.

  • Hi, I hope someone can help.... When I open a new user account, which I want to set parental control on, the screen keeps freezing once the account is open. The wee rainbow circle appears and I can't do anything. Does anyone know how to fix this? Thanks

Hi, I hope someone can help.... When I open a new user account, which I want to set parental control on, the screen keeps freezing once the account is open. The wee rainbow circle appears and I can't do anything. Does anyone know how to fix this? Thanks

Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at the top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
Report any errors it found for Disk Repair, don't need the ones for Permissions Repair.
Try it again & see if anything changed, but have Activity Monitor open & Show All Processes & sorted on CPU%, also have Console open if we can... maybe not when switching, but we'll see.
Does this happen if you just try to create a new admin user???

  • Need to put parental controls on laptop on which we currently don't have administrator account

My teenage son has a Macbook Pro on which he is the administrator.  He has been using his computer without parental controls, however, for a variety of reasons which aren't worth mentioning here, we have decided he needs parental controls.
How can we put parental controls on his computer if he is the administrator?  Ideally, we would create a new administrator account for us as parents and "demote" his account to non-administrator status.  Then we would impose the parental controls on him.
We can also explore using 3rd party software, but would like to see if it is possible to achieve this goal first using the OS X software.
Thanks very much in advance for your help!

You can't create a new account from a non-admin account. Of course, it's a fairly trivial matter to reset the password on an admin account, given physical access and a moment's privacy. So at a minimum, you'll need to check that account periodically. If you find you can't log in anymore, he's gotten access to it by resetting the password.
Regarding keyloggers, the issue there is that they are a bit of a gray area. Some keyloggers are legit, while others are malware. I don't have any experience with which ones are which... Even legit keyloggers creep me out a bit.
No idea what other software there is for parental controls at this point... I've passed the point where I am in the market for such things. :)

Add-ons are the responsibility of their authors. McAfee does not even put their extension on http://addons.mozilla.org you had to install it from their site.
Disable "McAfee Site Advisor" extension which was just updated to 3.4.0, which probably took it out of the addons block list.
    * "Ctrl+Shift+A" > find McAfee Site Advisor and use "Disable", and then restart Firefox.
    * Do a Google Search no problem
    * It seems that if you re-enable Site Advisor again, and restart Firefox you are okay. At least you know where to look if you get the error again or Google searches slow down.
