Parental Controls iChat Logs not working

I use parental controls on both of our family Macs--a G5 tower and an Intel iMac. I have set up the controls so that each child has exactly the same controls by copying the settings from one computer to the other (I don't remember which I set up first). On the G5, the iChat logging is working fine (as are the other logs)--I don't restrict iChat, but I do want to see the logs. On the iMac, though, while the other logs are fine, the iChat log is missing for all 3 children. I can't find any threads that address this specific issue. Any ideas/hints?
Thanks,
Lou

Essentially, make sure the email address listed in the Mail.app account of the person receiving the "Always allow" mail and the email address listed in Parental Controls>Mail>notify are the same.

  • Mavericks: Parental Controls: Messages Logs not working

Hello - my parental controls appear to be working ok - except for monitoring Messages via the "view logs".  When I attempt to view messages it has no content even though she (my daughter) has been using the Messages app and it says something like 50 messages were exchanged.
She has an iPhone too so is it possible that the iPhone messages don't come into the Parental Controls logs of Messages?   - even though the Macbook DOES show her iPhone messages in the Messages app when she's logged into the computer ?
    Thanks in advance

  • Parental Control website logs not showing

    Hi,
I have a problem with parental control in 10.6 running on a macbook pro.
Parental Control itself is running and I'm happy that everything appears to be working. However, despite sites being blocked for my kids, the "websites blocked" entry in the parental control pref panel is empty. As is the "websites visited" log section. However the applications log entry does have the fact that safari was used.
Anyone seen this before? Any suggestions about how to get the "websites blocked" log working as that's really important to me.
    S

I have the same problem, since 10.5.0 and now up to 10.6.2, although some improvement has been made. It seems that if my mac crashes or there is a power outage and it goes down unexpectedly, the Parental Controls (PC) log file is not properly closed and upon restarting, some fault remains in it. Thus, when opening the PC pane in System Preferences and looking at the logs, for dates including and before the 'crash' nothing is shown. The improvement is that now in 10.6.2, after a short search presumably, the system simply returns an empty selection pane, whereas in 10.5 it could bring down the whole system gradually, first locking up the System Preferences and if I persisted with it, Finder then the whole system.
I can look at the actual log files Carolyn and stonnewayuk mention, which are stored in folders numbered after the months (eg. 10 = October, 11 = November etc.) and named according to the date (eg. 01-usage.date, 02-usage.data etc.), but as stonnewayuk says, it is machine code and there is no sign of any URL or domain name.

  • Parental Controls - Allows Allow Not Working - a Solution

So this is actually in reply to this thread:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1805596&tstart=0&messageID=911 3494#9113494
Since it is archived, I can't actually reply to that thread though - yet it comes up so high in Google's search that I have to reply somehow.
    Here's the problem's set up:
You have a child with Parental Controls enabled and email managed. The child gets an email from someone or attempts to send email to someone that is not permitted. You have your email address listed as the permission address, and get an email with a button in Apple Mail that reads "Always Allow". Clicking that button does nothing.
If you look at the headers for that request message, they look like this (this is from the child sending to someone that is not yet permitted):
    Subject: (Subject Here)
    Date: Mon, 5 Jul 2010 20:33:39 -0500
    Resent-To: (Your Address Here)
    Resent-From: Child's Name <childs@address>
    X-Mailer: Apple Mail (2.915)
    X-Apple-Mail-Parental-Control-Addresses: (Disallowed Recipient Name) <recip@address>
    X-Apple-Mail-Parental-Control-Request: recipients
    Resent-Date: Mon, 5 Jul 2010 20:33:39 -0500
So, after that lengthy bit, here's the issue in a nutshell - many people have multiple email aliases that deliver to one mailbox. I have tony@mydomain and numbski@mydomain. Apple mail is configured to send from numbski@mydomain, but I had the kid's parental controls set to send permission requests to tony@mydomain. The result is that the permission request doesn't even render properly, let alone allow you to act on the request in any useful way.
The fix is either to change the address in the parental controls or change your sending email address in Apple Mail.

    Hi,
I cannot speak from experience, but only from reading the Help, but as I read that, I have the impression that the administrative account is expected to be running on the same machine. While I believe you would also see the messages on another Mac , but only if your account on the child's Mac was setting it all up. Furthermore, I wonder if the release can be triggered from your email account on another machine. But I mostly studied this for someone using Tiger, and have not re-briefed myself for Leopard.
Do you share this Mac, and via hot swap is your Admin account always running?

  • IChat is not working after uninstalling iMessage beta

    Hey all.
When the iMessage beta was available I installed it.  After several uses I decided I didn't like it and re-installed iChat.
Now the iChat does not work at all.
My buddies do not stay in the list and are always listed as Offline eventhough I know they are available for chats.
I took my Macbook pro to the Genius Bar where we re-installed everything but no luck.
I can now only chat from my ipod touch but I'd like to use my macbook for chats too.
How can this problem be fixed?
    Thanks for your input.

    Hi,
One is looking in the wrong place.
There are three folders called "Library"
The one in Hard Drive > Library
The one in Hard Drive > System > Library
And the Hidden one if you are using Lion in Hard Driver > Users > (Your account/Little House iCon) > Library.
This Hidden one can be seen if you use the Finder > Go Menu and then Hold the ALT key to see the Library get added to the list.
    Then you can open Preferences.
iChat can send Messages (IMs or Instant Messages) to valid AIM Names or to Jabber IDs
It cannot send iMessages like Messages Beta can or the iPod Touch can with the iOS 5 messages app.
The OS can be reinstalled several ways.
One is to use the Lion restore option which mean starting the computer holding down the CMD and R at Start up then choosing the "Recovery" Drive.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4718
There is a USB Memory stick drive that can be purchased and I would not be surprised if the Stores made use of this.
I would also think that Apple may provide the Stores with DVDs that can install the OS.
I was hoping that you either saw the process or the Chap told you which method was being used.

  • We need to get some help and explanations about iChat video not working.

I've read so many postings about iChat Video hoping for an answer to my problem, but not only did I not find an answer, no one else has been receiving an answer either.
I've had multiple problems with my ichat video not working.
I either get an error saying someone didn't accept which isn't the case, or I get some error-8 or something ridiculous like that.
Can we get some help from apple support or something?!

    Short answer: No, we can´t...!
Apple don´t care about us users, unless you pay for an Apple Care Service. Try your best to follow some advices from around this forum. That´s the only help you will get.
Some people have got their iChat video working again after following some advice. By the way. I´m not one of them... I´ve tried every single tip I read here, but I´m still stuck with text chat only...
    Good luck.

  • IChat Video Not Working since PSP3 bought!!

    Hi guys,
ichat video not working since I bought and installed a new Playstation 3. I have a BT HUB that connects wirelessly with the imac. I have BT Vision running from the HUB too via ethernet wall boost adapters. I had this problem with video when i installed the BT Vision. And turned out to be something to do with Application Sharing settings on the HUB. I resolved it by correctly sharing AIM TALK with my wireless imac. Now the same problem has arisen since the psp3 was put on. But even with all the things I've tried I am stuck as how to get the video up and running as before. The devices running off the hub include:
    1. imac (wireless via Airport Extreme)
    2. BT Vision via ethernet and wall adaptors
    3. iPod touch via wireless
    4. PSP3 via wireless plug and play
    I have checked all the ip address for these devices and have enabled app sharing for the imac wireless to AIM TALK in BT HUB manager. I have also opened my firewalls; changed the port setting to 443 in ichat preferences; re-set the HUB/Router;
Is there anything else I can do or check? As I said it worked perfectly before the psp3 went onto the
network. Should i assign AIM TALK to the imac wireless or to some of the other devices? (though I think I've tried that too!!)
Help would be much appreciated as this is driving me to insanity, if I wasn't there already!!!!
Take care, and thanks in advance for your help.
    Baz, Belfast, Northern Ireland, Europe!!

    "speedtouch modem!"
    Yes you do.
Thomson-Alcetel who make the Speedtouch range make this device for BT.
The Firmware is Thomson-Alcatels with BT Logo-ing.
This Ethernet 3 connection is probably internal.
Have you got System Preferences > Quicktime > Streaming set to 1.5Mbps ?
If not then do and restart iChat to see the new speed.
In Leopard the Automatic setting is read by iChat as 384K.
This may be allowing the PS3 to have too much of the bandwidth.
I or rather my son has a X-Box 360 which can be on-line when I video chat and it works for me, as it does when he uses his PlayStation 3
If the AIM talk setting uses the same port here as it is listed elsewhere then it has only opened/allowed port 5190.
This would have appeared to have been coincidental to any iChat use when you changed it.
Are you not using UPnP in this device ?
Which firmware is it up to ?
    Anything above 6.2.2.6 should work.
Anything starting with 6 and containing letters is later.
In the .telephony section does it mention which port are open ?

  • Control-clicking does not work in Finder

Ever since installing the 10.4.5 update, control-clicking does not work in Finder. When I try to do it, Finder automatically restarts itself. This happens in any Finder window and on the desktop itself. Whether I am control-clicking an Application icon or trying to 'Get Info' on a file, Finder restarts itself. I repaired permissions and it did not fix the problem.
Any idea on how to fix this? Thanks a lot!
    David
Edit: Nevermind. I fixed it by deleting the JIMZip.plugin file in my Contexual Menu folder. I found the answer in another thread. I apologize for searching after I created this thread.

    David,
Can you identify any corrupted or incompatible files in either your Macintosh HD/Library/Contextual Menu Items folder, or your Macintosh HD/Users/yourhomefolder/Library/Contextual Menu Items folder?
If so you may be able to uninstall/reinstall the associated application.
You may also consider temporary manual removal and isolation of the suspect file to verify CM functionality.

  • IChat alerts not working

Hello. My alerts for iChat are not working. I looked at iChat preferences and the sound is on and set to the maximum volume. This problem started randomly - it has always worked before. Now it no longer makes a sound when sending or receiving messages. The sound works everywhere else on my computer.

Try starting GarageBand and then quitting it.
    Restart iChat.

My iTunes parent control keeps giving me the same error message. “Parent control preferences could not be unlocked. You may need to reinstall iTunes. “I have uninstalled ant reinstalled iTunes that 4 time now and I still can’t get on. Can anyone help?

Experimental advice ... but, plausibly, the preference files containing the parental control setting may be damaged. If so, removing the iTunes preference files may help.
For the basic technique, see the "Remove iTunes preference files" section from the "User-specific troubleshooting" section of the following document:
iTunes for Windows Vista or Windows 7: Troubleshooting unexpected quits, freezes, or launch issues
To see those folders, you'll need to first set your PC to view hidden files and folders
In your Start menu, open Computer.
In your Organise menu, select Folder Options.
In the View tab, make sure that "Show hidden files and folders" is selected, and Hide extensions for known file types is unchecked.
    Click OK.
Prior to doing the preference file rebuilds: Best to make a note of any custom preferences you have set up for your iTunes. (Rebuilding pref files returns preferences to their defaults ... so you'll likely have to set some of those custom preferences up again from scratch.) Also make a note of any third-party plugins/add-ons you have installed. You may have to reinstall those after the rebuilds.
Things to watch out for during the rebuilds
Rebuilding the preference files in the \Local\ location causes the iTunes license agreement to run. So you'll need to agree to that again.
Rebuilding the preference files in the \Roaming\ location causes the iTunes Setup Assistant to run. When prompted to do so, do not add files to your iTunes library. (Otherwise you'll end up with a library full of duplicates.)

  • Using parental controls to log embedded video

Is there any way to set up the parental controls to log the videos watched in an embedded video player on a web page? Youtube will show suggested content after a video is watched which can ultimately lead to content that I would want to monitor. Is there any way to do with with the existing parental controls?

Okay.  Then your problem is just what you wrote: parental controls won't properly log out an account unless the user is there to handle onscreen dialogs.  Sorry, I have no fix.
Another problem related to this is that OS X can't log into one shared asset as two different users at the same time, so it can't log the second user in properly.  Sorry, but there's no fix for that either.  It's on the buglist, but it has been for some time.

  • Tab and control buttons do not work in Firefox (they work in other browsers) AND I switched to a new keyboard.

The tab and control buttons are not working the Firefox browser (My browser is up-to-date). The buttons work in IE and Chrome, however, before I realized that, I even switched out my keyboard to a brand new one hoping it would solve the issue.

Thank you--there were a few random extensions I had not added (spyware, maybe?). Once I removed those the issue was fixed!
