Parental Controls not functional on some software

I just bought the iMac and I am attempting to limit my children's access using parental controls. It was easy to limit their account for the bundled software but the additional software I bought at the Apple Store (some game and educational software) don't seem to be compatible with parental controls. For example, when a use the locate feature to add a program to the application list I receive "XYZ program does not work with the limitations you have selected". Without the capability to add the program title to the allowed list my children can't open the program in their account.
I followed the instructions in http://www.info.apple.com/kbnum/n107672 but I found that the key setting was already in place. Of the software I purchased and have installed - Dora, Adventures in Odyssey, Venture Africa - only Dora seems compatible with Parental Controls. The main difference between Dora and the other titles seems to be that Dora does not need the CD/DVD in the drive to operate.
Does anyone know of a way to use Parental Controls with these 'incompatable' titles? It seem incomprehensible to me I have to open the system security to use some title where others don't require it.

This seems to be on the right track. I added the suggested changes to the plist document and that allows me to add the program to the parental control list under the 'Others' category. However, when I click Ok, then reopen Finder and System the program no longer appears in the list.
Here's the Plist contents. The last two lines is what I added.

  • Parental Controls not working in Mavericks

Browsed related posts & didn’t find an answer.
“Kids” iMac is a 24” mid 2007. Was running Snow Leopard with Parental Controls enabled and working 100% for 3 years.
I never disturbed it because it was working fine for them.
Recently had to upgrade it to Mavericks to run TurboTax (my wife’s account is also on that machine).
Now the Parental Controls don’t work. Timer doesn’t work & all logs are blank. When asking for website permission, it never remembers after I allow it.
I am really frustrated with this.
My iMac is a 24” 2009, also running Mavericks. I made a dummy managed account, and it functions properly.
I’ve gone through the usual steps: turned Parental Controls off/on, restarted, repaired permissions, etc.
I did make a dummy account on the kids’ machine as well, and it worked one time, but just the one time.
Is there a fix, or an update or anything?
    Thanks in advance

I upgraded my Mac Pro from Mavericks to Yosemite and am having lots of problems with the Parental Controls settings with Yosemite.  By far, it was been the worst Parental Controls experience I have ever had.
I have had to turn off the time limit hours for my kids accounts, as that just aggravates the time limiting features on the OS.
The general time limits for say 1.5 hours a day seem to work, except when I try to extend the time.  When I extend the time, the OS seems to accept the modification, but as soon as the account is up and running, it logs them out immediately, and I have to do it again.
I also had to grant access to run all applications on the machine, as I couldn't just grant access to say the Arduino IDE, and have all of it's sub programs be granted automatically.  When I dump the settings in XML format, it seems like those sub programs are on the Ok list, but the OS keeps putting up alerts if I want to allow access or not, and it's just too painful to actually use anymore.
It would be nice to get some comments from Apple that they are aware of the issues people are running into, and they are trying to fix them.  Everyday there's some other quirk we're running into where I need to turn off some setting I used to have on for my kids.

  • Parental Controls Not Consistently Working (Linksyssmartwifi) on EA6500

    Hello,
I have a Linksys EA6500 with the lastest firmware (1.1.28.147876). I have been having lots of problems getting the parental controls to work properly on this router. I use the Linksys Smart Wifi website as well as directly access the control panel through the router (192.168.1.1).
My kids like to spend too much time on youtube, so i setup the parental controls so that their devices are blocked from youtube at all times. However sometimes I come home and find that they are able to access youtube without any problems. When logging into Linksyssmartwifi.com I see that the parental controls are "off". For some reason the parental controls sometimes turn themselves "off". I sometimes notice this when I have the SmartWifi app also running on my iPhone. Does the Smartwifi system automatically sync? Do I need to logout of the app on my phone before the parental blocking takes effect? Sometimes I notice that my kids laptop does not show up on "Device List" on the smartwifi menu, even though it is clearly connected to the same network via Wifi.
This is driving me nuts. The Smartwifi software is buggy and sometimes works, and sometimes doesn't. The firmware is up to date, but i've been having problems with this router ever since I bought it (about 6 months ago). It keeps inconsistently applying the parental controls.
The Linksyssmartwifi feature and being able to apply parental controls from anywhere in the world seems to be a great idea. But the experience that I've had so far has been incredibly inconsistent. Sometimes the Parental controls work, sometimes they don't. Any help you can offer would be greatly appreciated.

If that's the case, it has a big possibility that your son's computer is using a Static IP Address. I forgot to include the steps on how to set Static IP Address on the computer in my previous post. But here it is: http://kb.linksys.com/Linksys/ukp.aspx?vw=1&docid=aa7f7eb572b6404daf6413c2a643b04a_KBXXX_EN_v1.xml&p...
If your son's computer is using a Static IP Address, you will be able to see it on the Device List even if it is on the router's network.
For Static IP assignment, why not just use the Linksys router's DHCP reservation option to associate the device MAC address with a Static IP? That's what I do to get Static IPs for some of my my devices on my Linksys EA4500 router.
The above linked article talks about changing the TCP/IP settings in the OS to get a Static IP.
Also, I use the EA4500's (Cloud firmware) Parental Controls to prevent access from certain devices at certain times of the day. That mechanism has never flaked out on me, and has never turned itself OFF unless I turn it OFF.

  • Re: Parental Control not Working

FROM A VERY ANNOYED NEW CUSTOMER.  THIS IS MY LAST RESORT BEFORE I CANCEL WHAT APPEARS TO BE A RUBBISH 'PARENTAL CONTROL' SERVICE...
Brand new BT Infinity 2 Service installed on Wed 28th Jan.  On Fri 30th Jan set router up... logged into bt.com/mybt... first screen showed 'Do you want Parental Controls'  clicked 'Yes please'.  Responding rotating circle stating 'ACTIVATING'.  After a few seconds get standard error message saying 'Sorry, we haven't been able to activate your BT Parental Controls.'
I reported this on Fri 29th Jan... and now it's Thur 5th Feb and still no resolution.  After numerous phone calls to BT Broadband Help and 'Parental Controls' support, with 5 promises that staff will call me back by a specified time/date (5 of 7 failed to do so)... and now escalated to level 3 issue... it is still not working.
Reading e-mails on this forum... looks like the service is fundamentally faulty.
Please advise how you can fix this within 24hrs MAX... or we will cancel our contract on basis BT have failed to provide the services contracted.

We use custom filters on our online parental controls, however if I now try and change filters or add an allowed site or block a site, I get a message on screen saying "checking account information" and I get re-directed to MyBT. I am not sure why this is happening, can anyone help please? Thanks.

  • Parental Control not logging for one user only

Hi, my two kids have parental control turned on for their individual accounts. On one account I get logs of their activity, the other I do not inside parental control preference pane. I found in the account that does not get logged the following:com.apple.familycontrols.overrides.plist.
Anyone know what this is and why it might be in that account?
Also any ideas as to why one account would not be getting logged?
I can see the details in her user account inside Library/applicationsupport/apple/parentalcontrol.
    Imac G5, 2gb ram, 10.5.6

The familycontrols.overrides property list interests me, especially because I can't find any information on it! Looking at its contents suggests that it is a temporary file created whenever an admin authorizes the managed user to exceed their daily login time limit (e.g., 30 minutes extra).
As for the not logging problem, I have it too. It seems to me that events.data -- the actual log -- is too large at 54 MB and am deleting it. (I note that it was updated at the time the managed user last used his account, so something is being recorded.) Wish me luck.

  • ISA 570W - Application control not functioning

All of a sudden the Application control has ceased to function. I have tried re-booting, resaving settings. I have checked the logs and there are no entries? Any ideas or help is appreciated.
    Firmware: 1.2.20

Did you ever fix this problem? I'm having the EXACT same problem. Just updated to Lion from Snow Leopard.
I knew there would be some glitches, since I've had the same user folder since 10.0. Been updating all the way since then. Everyone always says it will break. It never does. I always figure out how to fix it.
Everyone always wants to nuke the site from orbit. Clean install. That sort of nonsense. Bah.
A real Mac user figures out how to fix the problem, and fixes it. Only idiots reinstall from scratch.

  • Titanium Dolby Digital - Windows Volume Controls Not Function

I am extremely happy with the Titanium because it finally elminated the 4GB Snap-Crackle-Pop issues I've been having since I owned this motherboard.
However, I've noticed that when I enabled Dolby Digital encoding over an optical output the master windows volume controls and muting do not affect the audio output at all.
Using the master windows volume controls with the analog or unencoded digital optical outputs work fine. It is only when using Dolby Digital encoding that I see this strange behavior. In-game and application-level volume controls & muting work fine; it is only the master windows volume controls that are 'ignored' when using Dolby Digital.
I'm still happy to see Dolby Digital encoding on this card, and very pleased that I'm using 4GB now without crackling in games or during music, but hopefully this Dolby Digital issue can be fixed.
Have any other users observed this odd Dolby Digital behavior?

Unfortunately (for me) the two of you are correct and windows volume controls have no effect in Vista.
Auzentech has this on their FAQ:
Q : After installing the sound card and connecting it to my surround sound system using S/PDIF output, keyboard and Control Panel adjustments to Volume and Balance either do not work or have minimal affect. Is that normal
A : With Digital Audio output, output levels are controlled by the wave volume settings. Multimedia keyboards and remote controls only adjust the master volume. The third-party application "Volume Tracker" corrects the situation by linking wave volume and master volume. Volume Tracker is compatible with Windows 2000, XP and Windows Media Center.
    I also found this article:
"Another direct consequence of transmitting a compressed audio signal instead of an uncompressed audio signal (more commonly known as PCM) is that the volume of that signal cannot be modified once it has been encoded. Because the bits in an encoded signal no longer directly correspond to the volume of that signal, it is impossible to increase the volume until it is decoded. This explains why your PC cannot control the volume of your sound when you are using Dolby Digital or DTS as the output. The connected device will be the only place where the volume can be changed."
    http://windowsvistablog.com/blogs/windowsvista/archi've/2008/03/04/using-s-pdif-to-send-audio-from-your-pc.aspx
So it would seem that this behavior is not only intended, but apparently unchangeable in Vista. In XP there is a utility (Volume Tracker) that can fix this, reportedly. This utility has no effect in Vista.

  • Guest Account Parental Controls

Hey there! So everytime I log into my guest account, Safari has parental controls turned on for some reason. I logged into my account (Admin), and it doesnt look like there is anywhere that I can turn them off. Is it possible to disable parental controls for my guest account, or do I just need to create a second account?
    Thanks!

Most odd.  On my guest account it will not let me activate parental controls.  The checkbox will not stay checked.  I started another thread on this several days ago, but got no replies.  Now you have the opposite problem.

  • Parental Controls bug in Mountain Lion 10.8.2

For years I've used Parental Controls, not to restrict my daughter's web content, but to limit her time on the computer.  But tonight I upgraded Mountain Lion from 10.8.1 to 10.8.2 and something broke.
Suddenly every secure web page she tries to access (to include google, gmail, amazon, etc.) fails.  It says "Parental controls restricts access to secure websites".
A little hunting around turned up the following Apple Knowledge Base article: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2900 that says "https note: For websites that use SSL encryption (the URL will usually begin with https), the Internet content filter is unable to examine the encrypted content of the page. For this reason, encrypted websites must be explicitly allowed using the Always Allow list. Encrypted websites that are not on the Always Allow list will be blocked by the automatic Internet content filter."
I understand that logic however that should NOT apply to me since I'm not trying to automatically restrict her adult web content or create allowed/blocked site lists, etc.  She has *unrestricted* web site access, so the Internet content filter shouldn't even be in play here.
Just to get this up and running, I did type the Admin account and password in at the prompt to let her gain access to the web pages.  However that did not work.  Even though it said it would now allow access - it did not.
I also tried going into Parental Controls, turning ON web site filtering, going into Custom, and adding in approved secure web sites (google, etc.)  Even *that* did not work.
Everything was great until 10.8.2 came along but now her account is for all intents and purposes unusable.
    Help?  And thanks.

Same problem here. Apple seems to be neglecting the parental controls. First, they broke X11: http://xquartz.macosforge.org/trac/ticket/439. 10.8.1 didn't address that problem. Not only does 10.8.2 not address the X11 bug, it actually breaks secure web browsing!
Just to add a little more information, secure browsing on Safari seems to work OK for me once authorized. However, neither Firefox nor Chrome work with any secure site even after they have been authorized. Unfortunately, my daughter's school site is secure and it doesn't work on Safari so her Mac is useless for school now.
Looks like I'll have to restore using Time Machine and not update again until I know this has been addressed.
    Apple, I'm not impressed.
    Mike

  • How to resolve ora issue-parent key not found!

    Hi,
Once the import is done, when i tried to enable the constraints,am getting ORA-02298: cannot validate (%s.%s) - parent keys not found for some of the constraints,i had already raised a new thread, but when i tried to resolve this issue based on the solution provided there,i couldn't....
    http://www.shutdownabort.com/errors/ORA-02298.php
i have tried in so many ways-
    -reimporting the parent table alone.
-fresh export of all tables with option consistent=y
but the records are matching between source and target tables.

based on this issue,is there any simple query to findout the missing records in parent table,i don't have access for child_table,parent_table views.
FYI- am using traditional imp/exp command to accomplish data import and export activities,i tried with the following query, but not getting any output
    select 'select '||cc.column_name-
    ||' from '||c.owner||'.'||c.table_name-
    ||' a where not exists (select ''x'' from '-
    ||r.owner||'.'||r.table_name-
    ||' where '||rc.column_name||' = a.'||cc.column_name||')'
    from dba_constraints c,
    dba_constraints r,
    dba_cons_columns cc,
    dba_cons_columns rc
    where c.constraint_type = 'R'
    and c.owner not in ('SYS','SYSTEM')
    and c.r_owner = r.owner
    and c.owner = cc.owner
    and r.owner = rc.owner
    and c.constraint_name = cc.constraint_name
    and r.constraint_name = rc.constraint_name
    and c.r_constraint_name = r.constraint_name
    and cc.position = rc.position
    and c.owner = '&table_owner'
    and c.table_name = '&table_name'
    and c.constraint_name = '&constraint_name'
can anyone suggest to fix it using some other option.

  • E1200 Parental control seems not functioning well...

    Hello, friends,
I have a LinkSys E1200 wireless router at home. I set up the parental control, limiting the internet access between 8am - 11pm only. However, to my surprise, my son can still use the facebook to chat with his friends after 11:00pm! I found this a few times!!
I thought he downloaded some software so as to get around the router settings. However, he denied he did anything. While, with the other laptop, which is used by my daughter, the limited-internet-access-time-interval works fine: between 8am - 11pm only.
    Any ideas? Thanks a lot.

Unfortuneately the web-based setup page doesn't give me that option. I have an E1200 Router, Firmware V2.0.04 and there is an "Access Policy" menu with the only sub-option of "Parental Control". There isn't an "Access Restrictions" menu with multiple options containing "Internet Access Policy". I verified that V2.0.04 is the latest firmware update, why do I not have this functionality?
I appreciate the quick response and offer to help.

  • Mac: Firefox software update process will not authorize in parental controlled account-Bug?

    OS: 10.7.5
    Firefox 20
Parental Controlled user account: Firefox and Firefox Plugin processes are checked in parental controls. No other Firefox processes are visible.
When logged into parental controlled account, user launches Firefox from the Dock. Message appears:
You do not have permission to run Firefox Software Update. Admin required authorization.
Admin clicked Always Allow, entered admin name & password. Firefox would not launch.
Logged out of Parental Controlled account.
    Logged in to Admin account.
Launched Firefox. "About Firefox" shows Firefox up to date.
    Logged out.
Logged back into parental controlled account.
    Firefox opens.
Is this a bug or is there some other reason the admin authorization failed?

I have a student that is having the same issue. Whenever she attempts to open Firefox, either from the dock or applications folder, she gets the permission error. I tried this under an admin account and get the same error, and it will not go past it, even with the admin user/pass. A strange icon appears in the dock for a second and the disappears, but Firefox never opens.
We have around 1600 student laptops in the school and I am seeing this on one of them. I have confirmed that she is running the latest version of Firefox and have tried to clear out the preferences, but there don't appear to be any.
Does anyone have anything useful to add to the conversation? Tyler just doesn't seem to be grasping the issue.
