Parental Controls solution needs a little more tho...

Folks,
Just joined BT and am disappointed by the Parental Controls.
The practicality with 3 stroppy teenagers of getting to all of their devices (mix of Laptops, IPADS, Smart Phones) and installing Macafee S/W on every device in a secure way makes it a non-starter.
I was impressed by the Homehub 4 I received but couldn't get it to work with my old Modem/Router to use OPENDNS (I knew HomeHub doesn't allow DNS changes).
Ended up buying a new router. Cost a lot but what price is worth keeping the unacceptable face of the Internet out of your house.
Anyway - What do people think - Should BT offer a whole home solution like OPENDNS - perhaps through their own DNS servers as they are so clearly keen for thir customers to use them.

Simon

BT need to do something. I recently had an issue with someone seeing something accidentally and have tried the following.
Firstly we have a Macbook Pro and an iPad so not so many devices but with a need to do something.
1. Installed McAfee (Family Protect I think it was called?) as offered by BT. It needed to be running as a background app on the Macbook Pro and I immediately had performance issues. It affected my download speed and PING went from a typical 20 to 120. It also for some reason affected the displaying of images which was good but surely not on CBBC. Gave up and removed it.
2. Went to Symantecs website and noticed they had a free offering, so installed it. Must work in a similar way to McAfee as I had the same performance issues. So, removed it.
3. Then went to OpenDNS and installed their free Home Parental Controls. Because of not being able to change the DNS settings on my HH3 I changed the settings on the Macbook Pro and the iPad individually and since it has worked very well. The only issue I have had is that you can't do much about images. My solution for the images issue has been to switch from Google to Bing as my search engine. It seems that OpenDNS does a fairly good job of dealing with Images and Videos when you search with Bing. OpenDNS can instruct Bing to block these but it can't instruct Google. There was no performance hit in using OpenDNS.
This is now my default position which I am trialling.
I have now given my granddaughter affected by the accidental viewing her own account and as OSX has Parental Controls built in I have now restricted her account so that she can only view websites in an acceptable list and no others. If OpenDNS proves satisfactory I will release the shackles and allow more access. It would be good if she could do her own school research unsupervised but not until I am happy. BT need to do something that works and support families.
Out of interest for those with IOS devices, IOS 7 is out this week and I understand that Safari has been beefed up with Parental Controls, perhaps that will offer is hope.
In addition OSX Mavericks is out this autumn and again I am expecting the Parental Controls to be beefed up.

  • Wtih Parental Controls on, need to allow run application from CD

    Hello
I have restricted my sons access/login using the parental controls and everything is working well except that some of his apps run from CD i.e. Wiggles stuff
Anyway, with parental controls on his login does not allow these to run, we get a permission denied error. Is there any preference/control in Tiger or Leopard that will allow his apps to run?
    Thanks
    Rick

Boot Camp is most likely to work, but requires that you restart the computer to change OSes; nearly all Windows applications will work through this method.
Parallels Desktop and VMware Fusion run Windows from inside Mac OS X through emulation. Applications which require direct hardware access likely won't work, and this method is slower than Boot Camp. It is more convenient to use, as no restarts are needed.
CrossOver Mac and CrossOver Games translate the Windows instructions directly to Mac OS X ones. This is the cheapest method if you don 't already have Windows and the least compatible one.
Stating which applications you want to use will enable more specific advice to be provided.

  • Parental Controls help needed

I'm a little confused on parental controls.
Applications logging: Nothing shows up at all. Does something have to be done to activate this? Does it only log certain (i.e. Apple) applications?
Websites Visited: Does this only log Safari visits, or will it work with Firefox too? It started working and then just stopped logging.
Chat: I realize that parental controls only works for iChat. Is there something else for other chat programs? Is there a way to limit access to other chat programs (there are so many) to force iChat use so it can be monitored?
    Thanks

Still not working. It logged some website and chat activity for about three days and then nothing. I have tried turning on and off, restarting machine - still nothing. I am not sure about time limits or other restrictions - as far as I know nothing about Parental Controls is working at all.
I realize this is "user to user" help. Is there an "official" place to get support or report this as a bug?

  • Parental Controls: I need a range that starts at 10 minutes

I realize my family is NOT typical, but for reasons I won't detail here we need a daily access limit range that starts at 10 minutes.
The range in 10.5.3 starts at 30 minutes.
Are there any known hacks to change that low end setting to 10 minutes?
If any Apple engineer wants to understand why 30 minutes is not a brief enough bottom limit they can email me at [email protected]

A friend of mine (Andrew M) suggested the following hack to change the parental controls setting. Note this hack requires editing a root controlled plist. We don't yet know if the hack will persist after reopening the GUI controller.
Still, it suggests a fix others may wish to explore further.
    download pseudo
run plist editor via pseudo (runs plist editor as root)
(drag plist editor on top of pseudo)
    open /Library/Managed Preferences/[child account name]/com.apple.familycontrols.timelimits.plist
in plist editor, go to root/limits-list/0/allowances/timelimitseconds and set to however many seconds you want
    do same thing for root/limits-list/1/allowances/timelimitseconds

  • Apple !!! • We Need A Little More Information From You •

This forum is inhabited by many dedicated Logic users taking a lot of time to help each other and other users that are less experienced.
I think we deserve a little more attention concerning information about compatibility and potential "dangers"
    Here's an example :
    http://duc.digidesign.com/postlist.php?Cat=&Board=UBB15
Above link is to digidesign's User Forum DUC - Announcements (This thread is by NO means intended as a Logic vs. Pro Tools situation)
On this part of their forum one can find compatibility alerts etc. i.e. the first post is called "Mac OS X 10.4.9 Qualified & Pro Tools Launch Error Help" This post is addressing a problem (also confirmed by Apple Support) with the auto update advising users to NOT use the auto update but go and get the combo update from Apple's website. In this particular case PT could face a launch error when having used the 10.4.9 auto update. The issues was not only seen by PT but many other 3rd pty. manufacturers also advised not to use the auto update.
The Digidesign Announcements are very practical and prevents a lot of potential problems.
I think it could help us Logic users help our selves and others if Apple were to make arrangements for the Logic Pro forum to contain something in the nature of what the DUC offers.
I would love to have easy access to something like compatible interfaces, Plug-Ins etc. etc. Fact is that there are quite many Plugs and hardwares which claims to offer Logic compatibility but still ensure Crashes instead of workflow.
Also, digidesign offers something called "Answer Base" it is a document that keeps growing and it is a base of "known Issues" and how to fix
    here's a Link - http://answerbase.digidesign.com/
If you do a search on - Logic Pro, you'll find useful information and answers to questions that 100's before you have asked. Q's also asked a lot on this forum by people using Digidesign hardware with Logic.
It would be wonderful if we could get something like this

  • How do I add a repeater Airport Extreme? Need a little more range.

Just added the new Airport Extreme to my home/office network. Since my macbook pro is a dual core and not a dual core2, I am not able to use the new "n" wireless network. Not happy. So...I need more range to hit my office which is through 3 walls. How do I go about setting up a repeater. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you...Thomas

Neptune is correct and your impression of N to
    dismay
you is not founded. My G side of my network is now
    4
to 5 times faster than before the N router and
    just
about as fast as the N side of my network. So
    there
are efficiencies to be gained from the N router.
I concur. Adding the 2 AE 802.11n allows all my
802.11g connected devices to use the maximum speed
provided by my DSL line, 1.5 Gbit. I tested this
using dslreports.com tools. I can get the maximum
speed provided by my DSL provider (Verizon) from
anywhere in my hour (on 3 different floors).
Also I can use my iTunes streaming server (off a
Infrant NAS) to go to maximum speed. And Apple TV
streaming is working from all my machines, Macs and
    PCs.
So there are MANY benefits to using multiple AEs with
    801.11g devices.
Thanks to all. Just installed another airport extreme....but have no idea how to add it to my current network. I want to make it a repeater to extend my network. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Best

  • Need a little more help

so i am going to buy an iphone 3gs used but with no sim card what will I have to do in order to use it as an ipod, and if i need one what type of sim card would i need to use it, would it have to at&t or will any work in order to just use it as an ipod

You would have to insert a valid sim card to activate it (doesn't have to be an activated sim card, just a valid one).  If the phone was locked, the sim card must be from the carrier it was locked to.

  • Need a little more audiobook help please

I received some excellent advice here regarding "how to" with audiobooks. I had a follow-up question but it might have gotten "lost" so I would like to repeat it.
I transferred the books to audiobooks and I did the options as were recommended but when I go to audiobooks in the music main folder the books do not appear to be in sequence - ie. first listing might be disk 3 chapter 8, next listing disk 3 chapter 2, next listing disk 1 chapter 10, etc. My question is if I manually go to disk 1 chapter 1 to start will my iPod know to automatically go to disk 1 chapter 2 wherever that listing is and so on? Thanks.

You may have to go back to the info screen > options and make sure the track and disc info are all in the right order as well. If that info is correct, then they should play in the right order.

  • Wifi/dsl router parental control

I am looking for a wifi/dsl router that will allow parental control for more than 5 users.  i want to limit people to one website.  if i have to have a separate dsl modem that is all right but would prefer an all in one solution.

As far as I know, the wireless gateways such as ADSL modem/routers for Linksys can set up Parental Control up to 5 devices only and can block up to 8 URLs either through the web-based set up page or through the Cisco Connect software. If suggest, you get an EA series router and install Smart Wifi firmware because you can enable Parental Control and limit URLs for more than 5 devices. So you will need a separate modem then to set it up for internet connection.   You refer to the articles below also I found from the knowledge base site of Linksys.
Setting up parental controls to block specific websites

Parental Controls can be set up for a total of five (5) computers or devices and can block up to eight (8) URLs only.

How many sites can be blocked per device in the Block specific sites of the Parental Controls feature at most?
You will be able to block up to 10 sites per device.

  • IOS Parental Controls - Flawed

Why are there so many serious flaws with the Parental Controls in iOS? Even if you disable safari and restrict installing apps 4+, many of these apps have their own browser (i.e. Facebook, CNN,MSN Messenger) that you can get out to the web in.  Is apple going to force developers to make any call to the web go thru Safari?  Even the ratings for some apps like Youtube need to be raised.  The Blackberry 10 parental controls are looking a lot more attractive.

Only Apple would know and they don't participate here. Submit your feedback to Apple here:

  • Leopard's Safari parental controls should have kept Tiger's approach

Parental controls for Safari in Leopard do not work as well as Tiger's. Tiger had the option to allow only sites that are bookmarked. Now you have to add them in the parental control's dialog. But more annoying and worst behavior is that you must approve each variation of a domain. Tiger would allow you to bookmark a site such as:
    www.apple.com
and subdomains would automatically be approved such as:
    support.apple.com
    forums.apple.com
But now you have to approve each sub domain and each variation on the URL for the approved domain. It would be much easier and more effective to control if you allow domain level approval and re-add the option in the Parental Controls dialog to allow only the bookmarked sites again.
Any ideas on how to get around this or make it behave more like Tiger.

Actually, you can still use Safari controls just like Tiger-- dragging sites to the bookmarks bar requests admin approval and then adds them to the bookmarks bar, as well as the user's whitelist for all browsers. Also, the domains/subdomains behavior you mention is present in Leopard. When I add http://pbskids.org to the whitelist, all addresses under http://pbskids.org/ are allowed.

  • Parental Controls on WRT1900AC

Hooked this up and love the speed boost at home. Question is: every review said there was an option to set time frames and time limits on devices under Parental Controls. This was one of my main reasons for getting it. Unfortunately it looks like there is just an on/off switch. Am I missing something? If not will this be coming in an update?? If not can you please add it to your list?!
    Thanks!

To set time frames and time limits on devices under Parental Controls, you need to access your Linksys Smart Wifi Account then click and enable Parental Control. After that, select the device that you want to restrict access from the Restrict Internet access on list and click "Specific Times". Here's how to do that: http://kb.linksys.com/Linksys/ukp.aspx?pid=80&vw=1&articleid=25627

  • Setting parental controls via profile manager

So I've got Lion Server running on an older mac mini.  I've setup up accounts on the server for my kids.  (they're my guinea pigs!)  We have 2 other macs in the house both running Mavericks.  I'm able to do a networkin login into the kids' accounts from those client machines with no problem.  I'm also storing their home folders on the server and creating "mobile" accounts (I think that's the terminology) on the client machines.  I've installed the Trust certificate from the server onto those client machines.  I've also installed the group certificate on the client machiens.  (most of the profile manager settings I have for the kids are handled in a group called "kids")
Here's the problem:  if I try to enforce parental controls on the kids' accounts (such as limiting the time they can be on them, etc) it doesn't work.  In fact, after the settings get pushed to the client machines, they (the client machines) often will lock-up or start acting really flaky.  A reboot "fixes" that, but the parental controls still won't work.
I've tried this literally dozens of times with the same result.  Other changes in profile manager, such as restricting access to certain apps, DOES seem to work. It's mainly just the settings related to parental controls that seem to be the problem.
Am I doing something wrong?  Is this stuff supposed to work?  Thanks for any help, this is incredibly frustrating!

Unfortunatley I never got this resolved.  In fact, it turns out that this is really a bug in how the parental controls work with a "managed" account.  All of the other settings that can be managed on OSX server seemed to work just fine in my testing, but the parental controls do not.  Or more specifically, the curfew (time limit) settings definitely don't work.  It's hard to believe, but apparently this is a use-case Apple never considered.  (if you do some googling for parental controls and OSX server you'll find we're not alone)
I don't recall exactly, but if you're trying to determine if changes got pushed to the clients there is something in the profile manager (web UI) that shows "completed tasks" or "active tasks" (or something like that) which should show what was pushed and if it was succssfully received by the client.
Anyway, after all that effort I ended up not using the profile management feature in OSX server at all.  My kids accounts are now just plain 'old local accounts.  I came to the conclusion (as many others have) that OSX server, at least in a home setting, just isn't worth the effort.  It's too bad because if it all worked properly it could be really useful.  If you still want to mess around with OSX server you might want to check out some nice youtube videos by a guy named Todd Olthof.  He has a bunch of videos on OSX server that are actually geared completely towards the home user.
    Good luck!

  • Safari not loading with parental control

HI. im having problem loading sites in "Allow access to only these websites"  under parental control. the pages just dont load. I tried a couple of trial and error and this is what i found out. if i change accounts then go back without restarting in the menubar the page will load, the same when click on the login window and go back. but if i dont change users or use the login window the page just stops and it doesnt load. has anyone encountered this problem? feel free to throw your suggestions and answers. thanks.

Same here  - I had to remove parental control. Apple starts looking more and more like Microsoft unfortunately.

  • Did parental controls get more strict in Lion?

We have the kid's computer set to block inappropriate sites.
In the previous version, if we'd allow a website such as "www.quizlet.com", it would work right away.   But now in Lion, when going to that website, the panel will come up listing a bunch of other sites that are blocked.   I think some of them are ad sites, not sure though.   Seems to block a lot of sites that start with htps also.
These parental controls are so much more annoying that the previous version!   Anyone else experiencing the same thing?

    Fellow frustrated parents:
    http://www.apple.com/feedback/macosx.html
Fill in the form with your info and specs and use this text as the complaint:
Parental controls is exhibiting some odd behavior on a managed account with parental controls (MAwPC) set to limit the amount of time the user can enjoy:
    1) Remaining time decreases at double or triple speed
    2) Adding time (when the notification window indicates 15, 10 or 5 minutes remaining) results in sending the managed user to the login screen. The user has to login again and an admin has to re-enter time and password repetitiously. This then loops back to the login screen. A hard reset of the Mac is required to end the loop.
    3) A MAwPC user decides to return to the login screen before his/her time limit has expired will result in:
      a) Time expiring instantly (as in #2 above) or,
      b) Time will continue to count down as if the MAwPC was still actively logged in
    4) Adding "Rest of Day" sometimes stops the login loop but is not a feasible solution and is not 100% guaranteed to work.
    5) The verbal "Logout in 15 minutes" will play once, then a few seconds later, play again.
    6) If a MAwPC clicks on the time in the status bar it will sometimes indicate time remaining as negative, e.g., -:15, or double-negative, e.g., -1:-15 -- very odd.
As Mac users with many kids/grandkids using macs in the house, the limited features of parental controls already left me wanting for more finesse.  Now in Lion the feature set is completely broken.
    Thanks,
