Parental controls too restrictive

My sister has an iMac running Snow Leopard and has a daughter who needs to get on a specific website to get her school work. We have allowed the site but every time she clicks on another subject we have to allow it again and again. Is there a way to allow a website and the links it contains within?
Thanks for any help

Instead of using the Mac parental controls for web sites, point your sister to [OpenDNS|https://www.opendns.com>. It's free, and you can set up an account that lets you control what categories of sites are and aren't allowed. Best thing, in my case, is that you can set things up on your wireless router so that all machines connecting through that router are affected... so my kids can't find their way to bad sites from an iPod Touch or PSP.

  • Parental controls/time restrictions on iPhone

I can safely say that my daughter's iPhone has ruined our lives.  We've had it for five days.  Yes, there are some built-in parental controls, but Apple has blocked anybody from offering a software program that will turn the dang thing off (I'm talking about texting and calling) at a certain time every night.  I have a daughter who is addicted to her phone and the battles are humongous to get her to do anything but text.
There are plenty of good programs with good parental controls for the Android and Blackberry, but thanks Apple for not allowing us as parents to turn the phone off at night.  I know about Mobicip, which is a great company, but they can only turn the internet off, not texting or calling.  When you have a kid who can and will text 5,000 texts a month, we need something that eliminates the battles at home and can automatically turn the thing off when it's bedtime.  We're all losing sleep.  Most parents, when they get an iPhone for their kid, don't realize that Apple, unlike Android, has chosen to place more importance on children's privacy than parent's ability to place restrictions on their kids' phones.  I plan to take the iPhone back and get her an Android.

The carrier doesn't have to "touch iPhone SMS or calling features. THEY SHUT THEM DOWN at thier end.

Have you even bothered to look to see what AT&T offers? Apparently NOT. You can effectively shut her down on any schedule you like.
Restrict the times it can be used for messaging, browsing and outbound calling.
That means no SMS, no iMessage, and no calling her friends. It doesn't block incoming calls, but messages will be blocked.
Afraid she'll hop on your WiFi and use that instead? Then lock her out of it. You can even do it on a schedule if you have a half way decent router and a few ounces of technical understanding.
    FEATURES
ENHANCED FEATURE: Block incoming and outgoing calls and text messages - now up to 30 numbers.
NEW FEATURE: Block calls to 411 Directory Assistance (including 555-1212).
Restrict times of day the phone can be used for messaging, browsing and outbound calling.
Set limits for the number of text and instant messages allowed per billing cycle.
Choose a dollar limit for downloadable purchases (ringtones, games and more).
Select the amount of web browsing/data usage allowed per billing cycle.
Restrict access to inappropriate content with content filters.
    COST
    $4.99/month per line
    OTHER
Calls and text messages to and from phone numbers you designate as “Allowed Numbers” and calls to and from 911 will continue to be permitted regardless of the limits you set.
As your child approaches the text and download limits, he/she will receive an advance warning. Once a limit is reached, there will be a notification that the action is restricted and that the service will be stopped until the next billing cycle begins.

  • Managing several parental controls: too long with preferences of Mac OS

    Hi
I have to manage parental controls for several accounts (too many kids !!!!)
I would like to mange all accounts in a better way than we can do it with the standard interface of System Preferences.
1- it is very long to edit authorised or non authorised web sites
2- I would like to manage one reference and copy it to other accounts
3- I want to categorize web sites like games, sex etc... but I cant
4- I want to specify wide chars to define category of web sites like all web sites containing a text, as we can do with ADblock in firefox.
Is there any system file I could edit rather than using the standard interface?
    Who can help me
    Thank you

In my experience the standard MAC OS doenst offer the type of interface you are wanting - it makes you set each child up and then administer each child's parental controls - im not sure if there is any third party software out there that would do what you are asking.  Sorry to relay bad news - but at least you can begin looking onto 3rd party info. Here are a few articles I have been reading over :
    http://www.macworld.com/article/136339/2008/10/parentalcontrols2.html
this one covers the basics of what the MAC os offers:

  • HT201304 Are there any parental controls or restrictions I can set for YouTube on the iPhone?

Help!  I need to set some restrictions for my 14 year old son on his YouTube access.  He has an iPhone 4S.  Any suggestions?
    Thanks,
    Darci

If you are looking for a new take on Internet Parental Controls that addresses how much time your kids can spend on-line on any device, check out this new HIPOM (https://www.myHIPOM.com) offering.
They have a very interesting free service that lets parents see all of the internet-enabled devices in your house and turn them on or off like a light switch - all from a simple web page.  No software to download or configure and it works for any internet-enabled device.  I’ve been using it for a couple of weeks now and it really works.  I use it to kick my daughter off Facebook after 8:30pm every night with a push of a button!
Rumor has it they are going into "beta test" with a 'Web Safeguards' feature as well that will allow parents to block content while the kids are online.  It’s a nice one-two punch for internet parental controls – an internet timer control deciding when they can go on-line and a web filtering control deciding what they can see while on line.

  • Parental Controls(Enable Restrictions) and installing apps through ITunes store (PC)

Through Parental control(Restrictions), the iTunes Store and Installing apps can be disabled on iPhone. Now is this feature can prevent apps getting installed if Apps are purchased through iTunes Store in PC and synced with iTunes? Is it possible to disable syncing with iTunes?

So you are saying that, even if there is Restrictions, with iTunes and Installing apps disabled, applications can be purchased through iTunes in PC and can be synced with iPhone and get the applications installed. Is that a correcy assumption?

  • Parental Controls Content Restrictions do not work correctly in iTunes?

I cannot seem to get the content restrictions to fully work in the iTunes Store. The Content Restrictions state that I will not be able to preview, purchase or subscribe to content that is marked as explicit:
But after setting the Applications level to 4+ and making sure the "Restrict explicit content" box is checked:
I am still able to view apps for a 17+ audience. The "Entertainment" section of the App Store is filled with applications that feature sexually graphic content (i.e. pictures of nude women in suggestive positions.) The settings do stop me from purchasing the apps. The "Buy App/Get App" button is grayed out so I cannot get the app, but I am still able to preview the app, including screen shots of graphic content along with detailed descriptions.
Is there a step that I missed? How do I make the 17+ apps not visible? I do not want to disable the entire App store, just the explicit content.
    Thanks!

I do not understand why APPLE is making it Rocket Science to protect our kids from this por-nography through their Store.
I have been in a dialgue with APPLE now for 2 weeks about the APP's that continue to come up, and researching further their podcasts also. They continue, as recommended here, to suggest that you complain to the a feedback link that, unfortunately, ends with a thank you and we will not be contacting you personally about this.
My suggestion is that you go to one of their 24 hour response links, here is one! (http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/contact.html?form=app_store&topic=App%20Stor e&subtopic=Downloading%20and%20updating%20Applications) and complain there. It is their respondsibility to manage their content.
The other suggestion is to notify everyone you know of your issue with APPLE and encourage them to also notify APPLE!
Everyone that I have notified is equally dissatisfied with APPLE.
Shame, we have to go so far to get APPLE to do what's right!

  • HT201304 iPhone 4S - parental controls and restrictions

My son has an iPhone 4S.  Can I disable his ability to text?  Use data (You Tube, Safari, etc.)?  The "restrictions" capability on the phone does not seem to be very robust.  Thank you...

You cant turn off texting from the restrictions from the phone (just like calling). You can possibly turn it off by contacting your wireless provider (ATT, Sprint, Verizon).
On a side note, why would you give your kid a $600 phone, and then turn off basic features the phone comes with?

  • Parental Controles, restricted apps...

    Hi,
I've set my sons machine up with parental controles and restricted what apps he can run.   Everything seemed ok, but one of his apps contains a unix executable within the package.  Now whats happening when he uses this allowed app, it trys to use unrar and throws up a message telling him its not allowed. I've tried clicking on the Allways Allow button and giving the admin password but its not working.
I've even tried opening the app package and draging the unrar exe into the allowable apps box, but it just disapears after a reboot.  Anyone know if there is a list of apps I can add to manually...?
    Many thanks in advance...

I don't have "Tiger", but with "Panther", this issue was most often due to the fact that the problem app did not have either (depending on the type of app) a unique "creator" code, or a 'CFBundleIdentifier' specified in its "Info.plist" file. As alluded to in the article below, the responsibility lies largely with the developer of the programme, although there are some special cases where Apple could improve things on their end.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=300842
At this point, you could begin to look in to how to edit the "Info.plist" file, and make modifications to the 'mcx_settings' (in the "NetInfo" database where the settings for "managed" accounts are stored), and this would be necessary for a "Some Limits" account.
However, for a "Simple Finder" account (which doesn't actually limit application use), an easier workaround would be for the "admin" to switch to log in to the account, go to "Finder" > "Switch to Full Finder", and manually add "alias" files for the "missing" applications to a folder accessible to the user. Note that if the user's "~/Library/Managed Items/My Applications" folder is to be used, it will be necessary to use "Get Info" to "lock" the aliases since the contents of that folder are determined by the contents of 'mcx_settings' and any alias not listed would be deleted during the next login unless it is locked.

  • Parental control issue

I am unable to unlock the parental controls in iTunes 9.0. I receive the following error message "The parental control preference could not be unlocked because the user "dw00521" does not have administrative privileges." I don't ever remember creating or adding parental controls. I am the only user of this computer. I cannot access the iTunes store or execute home sharing since these items are turned off in parental controls. Would appreciate any help in how to resolve. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling iTunes without any luck. Thanks.

    Sorry about the delay, JD.
Okay ... there may also be an issue with the preferences files relating to parental controls too. So rebuilding your preference files may be of some help here.
The technique you need to fix that is described in the "Remove iTunes Preference files" section of the "User-specific troubleshooting" section of the following document:
[iTunes for Windows XP: Troubleshooting unexpected quits, freezes, or launch issues|http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1421]
Before starting out on that, set the PC up to view hidden files and folders, as per the description at the beginning of the "User-specific troubleshooting" section.
    *Some heads-ups before proceeding*
Be careful of any custom preferences (EQ, imports, etc) you have set up. Take a note of those, because rebuilding the relevant prefs returns all such prefs to their default settings. You may need to set up any such preferences all over again.
You may also need to reinstall any third-party plugins afterwards.
Things to expect during the pref file rebuild ... moving one set to the desktop (on XP) causes the setup assistant to run during the rebuild. Avoid saying yes if it asks you to import all the media files on your PC into iTunes. Otherwise, you'll end up duplicating all your content in your iTunes library. Moving the other set of prefs to the desktop (on XP) means that you have to agree to the licence agreement again.

  • Parental control of iTunes over multiple users

Hi I have been able to move my iTunes folder to public which has allowed another user account to access content. However in this other account I have tried to put parental controls in place. On testing I played a 15 rated movie downloaded from iTunes and it played it no problem not even a password request. Is this due to me moving the iTunes folder to public?  Basically I want my daughter to be able to watch only some movies and I don't want to be messing around putting certain films in certain folders and other films in other folders

I am sorry, I gave you the wrong info.
This is a link to a info video on setting up Parental Controls ON a MAC computer NOT iOS
    http://www.apple.com/findouthow/mac/#parentalcontrols
To set up Restrictions in DVD Player:
    Turn on parental control
To restrict access to DVDs for certain users, such as children, turn on parental control in DVD Player.
Choose Features > Enable Parental Control, and then enter an administrator name and password.
To remove parental control, choose Features > Disable Parental Control.
When parental control is enabled and a DVD is inserted, a computer administrator must authorize a DVD before it can be played. You can also set up authorization for a specific DVD.
    Sorry about the confusion.

  • Parent Control Issues

My wife and I just purchased an Ipad mini for our 8 year old son as a reward for a summer reading goal.  We have read about parent controls and restrictions but can not seem to find the kind of app or setting that will allow us the sort of restrictions that we want to have.  What I would like to do is place all games that he might want into a folder and then set a time restriction on what he might chose to do in that folder.  He should have the freedom to exit the folder and do something else such as math homework and then re-enter the folder to play a game.  I want this all control via a password that we can enter to have the timer reset and to have it reset each day.
Does anyone have any ideas on what might accomplish this and how we might get this done?

  • Parental controls for wireless internet use?

    Hello,
This is my first post here. I've had an iPod mini for a while, and I just bought my son an ipod touch for Christmas. We have wireless internet in our home, and now I am concerned that he can browse anything, anytime! Is there a way to set parental controls to restrict what he views on the internet via his itouch? Thank you!

As a parent of 3 boys I can say that parental controls is no small issue.
A relatively simple thing you can do is set up an account (free) with OpenDNS.
See: http://opendns.com/ Once the account is set up you can specify what content should be block and what should not be blocked.
Then set the DNS servers on your iPod Touch to the OpenDNS servers (208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220). See: http://andrewescobar.com/archive/2007/07/06/change-iphones-wi-fi-dns-settings-to -connect-to-the-internet/
Alternatively, you can set up your home router to use the OpenDNS servers and protect every computer in your home.
Note: neither of this solutions protect your son when he uses an open network OUTSIDE of your home for internet access.
    Hope this helps,
    David I.

  • Parental Controls-How can I allow login to email sites?

How can I setup parental controls to allow access to Google and to Yahoo for email? When I set those sites up in Parental Controls> Website restrictions> Try to limit access to adult websites automatically> Customize> "Allow these websites" list in admin account's Preferences, the child is unable to login to his email pages in his account side of the Mac. Only when I select to "Allow unrestricted access to websites" can he login to his email pages. When it refuses to let him login, the error message in Safari reads:
    Safari can’t open the page.
Safari can’t open the page “https://www.google.com/accounts/Login?hl=en&continue=http://www.google.co.uk/” because Safari can’t establish a secure connection to the server “www.google.com”.
How can I restrict access to adult sites but still allow access to his email sites and other sites?
Thank you in advance for ay help offered.

    No longer na issue.

  • IMac...Safari not working when parental controls enabled, even when no safari or application restrictions have been set.

I woke up one morning to find that Safari could only open webpages on the administrator account.
The other accounts had parental controls enabled. However, not all of them even had any restrictions for using applications or Safari content. When I totally disabled parental controls, these other accounts could get access the internet through safari. When I enabled them (without setting up any paramters), Again Safari could not open any web pages. I tried reseting also.
Has anyone had this issue or have an idea of what I need to do to fix it? Thanks!

I had the same problem, Safari would not open at all in the accounts that had parent controls enabled. I resolved this by going into the admin account and making a copy of safari then pasting it into the library folders as well as the application folders. You can also paste a copy of safari into the other user accounts (desktop) from the admin account. Once that is done, open the parent controls  system  (check the applications to allow) Internet tab then check safari. Hope that works for you
