Parental Controls via Smart WiFi and Range

I have recently purchased a WRT1900AC. Went through setup and all seamed to work OK. However when using the Smart WiFi it does not provide the option to select "Specific" under Parental Controls. In fact the whole App looks completely different from what is in the user’s manual. In addition I find the range of this device extremely poor. I bought this WiFi router to replace a cheap free one costing one tenth of this one. The most annoying thing is the cheap freebee one has a much greater range irrespective of how I set the antennas. Is this normal.

Please post a picture of what your seeing on the Parental Controls section of the router... What Hardware version is your router?

 Router Placement
Forum User - "Well I feel really dumb. After moving the router away from other electronic devices my speeds are back to normal. Just a heads up for anyone experiencing slow speeds, you might want to move it away from other electronics and see if that helps."
3-6' feet minimum safe distance between devices.
Placement on main level floor and central in the building and WELL ventilated is preferred. Not in basements or closets as building materials, or near by electronics devices could interfere or hinder good signal propagation.

    Hello, lustige luka.
Thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities.
The Personal Hotspot feature using USB  should be as simple as connecting the device to your Mac via the USB cable when Hotspot is enabled.  Here is some more information regarding this feature and an article that will provide some troubleshooting steps if you are experiencing an issue.

  • No parental controls on tv shows and movies?

just received my Apple TV today, downloaded a show, went to parental controls and there is only an option for blocking YouTube only....
    am I missing something?

I would argue that parental controls are NOT handled "very well".
Even my 4 year old is smart enough to know the 4 digit parental code that must be entered in plain text in order to unlock the apple tv. Whoever had the bright idea to show the pin in plain text wasnt thinking.
Additionally, it isnt cool that ALL movies show but just wont play unless you have the code. I would argue that unless you dont have the code you shouldnt be able to even browse the restricted content in the first place.
Parental controls are far from being handled "very well"

  • Configure Parental controls via CLI

    Hello all.
i ahve over 350 macs where by i need to eneable parental controls from another computer option.
Is there a command via terminal to perfom this action?

It would depend on what you need to do, but '/usr/bin/dscl' offers a few options for configuring "Parental Controls" from the command line. For more information about various options, try eg.:<pre>
    man dscl
    dscl . -mcxhelp</pre>
In particular, the '-mcxexport' option can be used to save settings (individually or all at once) from one account to a file, and '-mcximport' can be used to load those settings to a second account. If pre-Leopard systems are involved, 'dscl . -read' and 'dscl . -create' can be used in a similar manner (although limited to copying everything at once), in a format compatible with older versions of 'dscl' or 'nicl'.

  • Change Parental Controls via ARD

I'm trying to determine the most efficient way to add a particular application to 150+ users in 2 different facilities via "Parental Controls" in System Preferences.
There doesn't seem to be any easy way to globally affect all the users' preferences. I'm hoping I don't have access each user station one-by-one. I was thinking that I could replace the related plist file in all the users, but I can't seem to find the one that drives parental control settings.
    Any ideas out there?

hi mecklists thanks for your response.
I've explored a workgroup manager-based solution, but right now that's not viable. I think I'm either gonna find a way to do it globally via ARD, or I'm gonna bite the bullet and go station-to-station.
Specifically the problem is that users currently can't calibrate their monitors with the Display system preference, because some apps are made inaccessible through the parental control settings. I've discovered in need to make an application called "Display calibrator" available, along with the Colorsync Utility.
    The solutions I'm exploring are:
    - Create an automater/applescript script to launch globally through ARD. Main problem: I don't know how to do this, or even if this is possible.
    - Create a good plist file to copy into users' folders via ARD. Main problem: I can't figure out which plist files drive parental control settings, if any.
    - Go station-to-station. Problem: repetitive task which won't help me learn anything.

  • Parent Controls needed for video and tv shows in Itunes

I would like to know why Apple didn't have any thoughts to
include video and tv in the parent control area. As a result
we do not allow our children to use the music store anymore.
What choice do we have? Either cut it all off or allow content
that we feel is inappropriate to enter our home.
It would certainly make parents who buy the computers, gadgets etc. to feel that Apple is looking out for their interests.
It would be easy enough to come up with controls certainly like AOL, that would restrict the children to age appropriate
tv and videos, or be able to not have them available at all.

You could use the 'Restrict explicit music' option. This also has effect on video's labeled as explicit (just tried it out).
    Hope this helps.

  • Setting parental controls via profile manager

So I've got Lion Server running on an older mac mini.  I've setup up accounts on the server for my kids.  (they're my guinea pigs!)  We have 2 other macs in the house both running Mavericks.  I'm able to do a networkin login into the kids' accounts from those client machines with no problem.  I'm also storing their home folders on the server and creating "mobile" accounts (I think that's the terminology) on the client machines.  I've installed the Trust certificate from the server onto those client machines.  I've also installed the group certificate on the client machiens.  (most of the profile manager settings I have for the kids are handled in a group called "kids")
Here's the problem:  if I try to enforce parental controls on the kids' accounts (such as limiting the time they can be on them, etc) it doesn't work.  In fact, after the settings get pushed to the client machines, they (the client machines) often will lock-up or start acting really flaky.  A reboot "fixes" that, but the parental controls still won't work.
I've tried this literally dozens of times with the same result.  Other changes in profile manager, such as restricting access to certain apps, DOES seem to work. It's mainly just the settings related to parental controls that seem to be the problem.
Am I doing something wrong?  Is this stuff supposed to work?  Thanks for any help, this is incredibly frustrating!

Unfortunatley I never got this resolved.  In fact, it turns out that this is really a bug in how the parental controls work with a "managed" account.  All of the other settings that can be managed on OSX server seemed to work just fine in my testing, but the parental controls do not.  Or more specifically, the curfew (time limit) settings definitely don't work.  It's hard to believe, but apparently this is a use-case Apple never considered.  (if you do some googling for parental controls and OSX server you'll find we're not alone)
I don't recall exactly, but if you're trying to determine if changes got pushed to the clients there is something in the profile manager (web UI) that shows "completed tasks" or "active tasks" (or something like that) which should show what was pushed and if it was succssfully received by the client.
Anyway, after all that effort I ended up not using the profile management feature in OSX server at all.  My kids accounts are now just plain 'old local accounts.  I came to the conclusion (as many others have) that OSX server, at least in a home setting, just isn't worth the effort.  It's too bad because if it all worked properly it could be really useful.  If you still want to mess around with OSX server you might want to check out some nice youtube videos by a guy named Todd Olthof.  He has a bunch of videos on OSX server that are actually geared completely towards the home user.
    Good luck!

  • Lost connection to internet via 'airport' WiFi and 'NETGEAR WNR2000v' base router

After trying to connect 'MacBook Pro SnowLeopard' via Fire Wire '6pin to 9pin' to new 'iMac-LION'  there is no possibility anymore to get contact to the internet, even all Network 'airport' configuration and passwords has been still the same. The 'NETGEAR router' configuration and activity was reset and checked successfully many times. Windows XP through 'Internet Explorer' by Ethernet cable via 'NETGEAR router' still works perfect. But 'airport WiFi' of both Mac's are screwed up suddenly completly after working perfect for more than 1/2 year! Need some help to get it working again!

  • Parental Control for your Wifi from a Mac

I would like to know how to limit my wifi access from my iMac

Parental Controls have no mechanism for this.
Could you provide some background details on the requirements here, who you're seeking to prevent access — yourself or somebody else? — and under what circumstances should access be restricted, and whether there's a budget for adding hardware?    With some more details, there may be alternate solutions.

  • I need to restore my files on an account but I'm having trouble finding a way how to. There were parental controls on the account and I pressed the  button not knowing what it was. It asked me if I wanted to save the home folder and I said

I need to restore the deleted files on my computer!
The account is there but files all deleted
I didn't save the home folder
    How can I restore it?

Turn your Mac off now and do not use it until you have bought a copy of DataRescue (about $100) and used it to try to recover.
It is very important that you stop using your Mac now, the more time you use it the more chance of you not being able to recover the files you deleted.

  • IChat, Parental Control and Bonjour

Rather than using AIM (and it's slowness), I was hoping to be able to use Bonjour on our internal network (which is firewalled and, obviously, not a threat) to chat/audio conference with our youngest.
I used the parental control to limit his AIM partners to the family but still wanted to allow him to talk on our network in the house. Unfortunately, when I go into iChat via his account the "using Bonjour instant messaging" is grayed out.
I tried turning it on in iChat on his account, going to my admin account and THEN enabling parental control, and trying again but no dice.
    Any ideas?
Sure would be nice for home networks to have the option to iChat with everyone at Bonjour vs. AIM speeds (doubly so if you are on dialup!).

    hi James,
Well I read this and thought "he can't be right" ?
    So I went to test
Enabled Parental Controls and for iChat and Added one AIM/@mac buddy.
Looked for ability to add Bonjur or Jabber accounts but found nothing
Went to log in to that account.
Check to see if Bonjour window was available. Nope.
Checked iChat Preferences >Accounts and could not select Bonjour.
Took off Parental Controls - Appears in iChat, Bonjour and Jabber windows.
Selecting and deselecting Parental Control Logs iChat in and out of AIM.
I must admit to thinking this is a big Opps by Apple

  • BT Yahoo Parental Controls and I-tunes

    Hello all,
I’ve had a number of problems with my children’s Ipod Nano’s.
We are running windows XP professional, with BT yahoo broadband. We have the pc set up so that there are different users. Me and my children each have their own account.
My children are 8 and 11 years old and as a result I have the BT yahoo broadband parental controls in place. The parental controls are in place and set to '‘kids’ setting.
I want my children to be able to use itunes to put their CD’s on and subsequently sync them to the ipod.
However the minute I open itunes on my children’s account, BT yahoo brings up an error message that says BT Yahoo will not allow itunes.exe to run due to parent controls.
I cant seem to give my children permission to use itunes as its not a website I am giving permission too but an .exe file. I don’t want to decrease the parental controls settings on BT yahoo. Can anyone help as my children have two ipods that they cannot use at the moment, useless they use my account and remove the items that are in my itunes library.
Any help would be much appreciated.
    Kris

This sounds like it a problem with BT Yahoo parental controls rather than a "Connecting your iPod to Windows" problem which is where you've posted. I doubt if you'll get much practical help with your issue here, but to improve your chances you might like to consider posting to a more general and appropriate discussion (e.g. "Using iTunes for Windows" or "Installing & Upgrading iTunes for Windows"). As it is the BT Yahoo restrictions which is restricting iTunes you're probably going to get better advice from a BT Yahoo helpdesk. You might like to double check that you've not made a typo when entering the info into parental controls.

  • BT Parental Controls window won't go away

    Hi there,
I use BT Internet and am on wifi. Today I switched on my PC and every time I open a webpage in Google Chrome or Internet Explorer, I get a little window from BTInternet asking me if I want to activate Parental Controls. I click "No" and it takes me to a page, saying "You have chosen not to enable parental controls." All fine and dandy. So I click "Close" on that page and it tries to do something, then just times out. I usually use Chrome but I tried it on Internet Explorer as well, where it closes instead of timing out.
    HOWEVER
It doesn't seem to be registering that I DON'T want to use parental controls because the message appears on every online shopping website I try to visit, and because it's there, I can't browse any of the pages.
The other PC connected to the router via ethernet is not having this problem.
I've tried clearing cache and cookies and using a different browser (Internet Explorer) but this doesn't work.
    Can anyone please help me?
    This is what I'm seeing.

    Hi laalaa,
Welcome to the forum and thanks for posting!

  • Parental controls/time restrictions on iPhone

I can safely say that my daughter's iPhone has ruined our lives.  We've had it for five days.  Yes, there are some built-in parental controls, but Apple has blocked anybody from offering a software program that will turn the dang thing off (I'm talking about texting and calling) at a certain time every night.  I have a daughter who is addicted to her phone and the battles are humongous to get her to do anything but text.
There are plenty of good programs with good parental controls for the Android and Blackberry, but thanks Apple for not allowing us as parents to turn the phone off at night.  I know about Mobicip, which is a great company, but they can only turn the internet off, not texting or calling.  When you have a kid who can and will text 5,000 texts a month, we need something that eliminates the battles at home and can automatically turn the thing off when it's bedtime.  We're all losing sleep.  Most parents, when they get an iPhone for their kid, don't realize that Apple, unlike Android, has chosen to place more importance on children's privacy than parent's ability to place restrictions on their kids' phones.  I plan to take the iPhone back and get her an Android.

The carrier doesn't have to "touch iPhone SMS or calling features. THEY SHUT THEM DOWN at thier end.

Have you even bothered to look to see what AT&T offers? Apparently NOT. You can effectively shut her down on any schedule you like.
Restrict the times it can be used for messaging, browsing and outbound calling.
That means no SMS, no iMessage, and no calling her friends. It doesn't block incoming calls, but messages will be blocked.
Afraid she'll hop on your WiFi and use that instead? Then lock her out of it. You can even do it on a schedule if you have a half way decent router and a few ounces of technical understanding.
    FEATURES
ENHANCED FEATURE: Block incoming and outgoing calls and text messages - now up to 30 numbers.
NEW FEATURE: Block calls to 411 Directory Assistance (including 555-1212).
Restrict times of day the phone can be used for messaging, browsing and outbound calling.
Set limits for the number of text and instant messages allowed per billing cycle.
Choose a dollar limit for downloadable purchases (ringtones, games and more).
Select the amount of web browsing/data usage allowed per billing cycle.
Restrict access to inappropriate content with content filters.
    COST
    $4.99/month per line
    OTHER
Calls and text messages to and from phone numbers you designate as “Allowed Numbers” and calls to and from 911 will continue to be permitted regardless of the limits you set.
As your child approaches the text and download limits, he/she will receive an advance warning. Once a limit is reached, there will be a notification that the action is restricted and that the service will be stopped until the next billing cycle begins.
