Parentalcontrols app eating my processor

Well, it's not literally eating my processor, but it's using quite a bit and I don't know why. I only noticed it yesterday, but in Activity Monitor, there is something called "parentalcontrols" with the user "root" and parent process "launchd." It uses anywhere from 50% to 100% of one of my processors (I have two) and I am wondering how to stop it or at least why it's eating up my processor. I don't see why parental controls could use that much processor just to keep people form opening certain apps and other things like that. (I do have parental controls enabled but I had them enabled in Tiger too and they didn't use up any noticable amount of processor. I don't even remember seeing the "parentalcontrols" app in Tiger but I never looked for it so it may have been there,)
I tried the "Quit" command in Activity Monitor and I had to type in an Admin password but it only quit for a second or two and started back up. I tried this twice, with the same result.

that's the same thing I have.
I have the dashboard problem it mentions too, but I should probably post that in another topic.

  • Flex Mobile App eats memory on device

    Hi,
I have my flex mobile app that manages a lot of bitmapdata objects. Every bitmapdata is disposed after use. It's a multi-layer drawing app, and I have many SpriteVisualElements displayed on the screen. Every SpriteVisualElement contains 4 SpriteVisualElement that I use to paint different images. The problem is that on device (iPad2) the app eats a lot of RAM. It's not a memory leak problem (the memory is properly released when I return to the first view). I don't know what to do... please help me!
ps: on Flex profiler the app seems to consume 6 times less RAM

    oooooh nooooo
you have to pay Apple first
and then request a certificate and provisioning file
and then try and figure out how to convert the certificate to a .p12 file
and cross your fingers and hope they will allow it in their store
and you have to own a mac, although there are some convoluted ways to get a certificate using a pc you still cant get onto the store without a mac

  • Too many apps frying the processor?

    Is this true?
Heavy use, running too many apps burn the processor?
My friend's 5800 would get hot whenever he used it.
He went to nokia care and the people there said that the processor was burnt and was out of repair.
If used, then the battery would explode.
His phone was out of warranty.
    Can this happen?
Im also an s60v5 user and would like to know.

Sounds like something coming from the rear of a male cow to me, only instances I've heard of are when people 'overclock' there phones with hacking, from the factory most Nokia processors are 'underclocked' precisely to avoid this kind of issue. I use my phones in what I would describe as an intensive manner and have never had an issue, I wouldn't lose a lot of sleep about it

  • Is the Podcasts app eating my mobile data?

I'm using my iPod Touch 5th gen, iOS 7.0.3, with a mobile hotspot.  I suspect that the Podcasts app is eating up my mobile data by downloading podcasts in the background or something, since I seem to have gone through my data especially quickly lately, and I've been careful.
I've turned off "automatic downloads" under settings: Podcasts, and of course "use cellular data" is off.  Is there something else that could be downloading stuff in the background?
How do I get the podcasts to work the way they used to by default--download to computer at home, then transfer to the iPod when connected to said computer?

What is Refresh set to? If set to Manual it will prevent automatically updating the with newly added content. The iCloud symbol will not show that a new episode is available.
Setting Auto-Download to Off prevent auto downloading of new episodes.
Are you automatically download new mail messages?
With wifi on, you will use some data since the iPod is connecting to the internet to check for thins but not necessarily download. You may get notifications
Do you have automatic app updates turned don in Settings>iTunes and App Store

  • Word eats up processor power

I receive lots of documents from many people. Most of them create the stuff using Word on PCs. Some documents keep the computer busy without anything being done with them. The document is just being displayed. The oddest case was a short document with about two pages eating up 85% of the computer power until it was closed hours later. The tiny pen in the middle of the page foot kept busy writing something, but I never figured out what.
Before Tiger, such documents would cause a crash, either of Word or of MACOS. Even normal documents would occupy about 15% of the processor even when Word was idle.
Has anyone an idea what this funny bug people use to mistake for a text editor does?

    Hi, Y.
You might want to search or post on the Word group you can find on the Microsoft Mac Support - Newsgroups page. These are Google Groups with active participation from MS product users, including a variety of expert users.
I don't mean to send you somewhere else, but I've found numerous answers there for folks with questions related to MS products. Accordingly, it has often proved to be the first, best place to look for answers to questions such as you are asking.
Be sure to note the version of Word you are using.
The only other thing I can suggest is that, while the problem is occurring, check Console for clues. Perhaps Word will be logging messages related to what is happening in one of the Console logs.
    Good luck!

  • Calendar app eating up my mobile data

Since upgrading to an iPhone 5S with iOS7 I've regularly used up my mobile data allowance of 750 MB by the mid of the month. Almost never ran into that problem with my iPhone 3GS and iOS6.
I've checked mobile data usage in the settings and apparently the Calendar app is the culprit. It has racked up 421 MB in ten days. I am using iCloud. How is that even possible? Is anyone else having these kinds of problems with the Calendar app?

Same problem for me too. (iPhone 5 not 5S)

  • Background task/app eating battery life away?

Checked a dozen blog/websites, handful of email, 15min of games, 30-45min phone calls. Email fetch was on 30min intervals. Auto lock 1min.
    I got about
    Usage: 3 Hours, 25 minutes
    Standby: 23Hours, 10 minutes
    ~50% battery left
Listen to a few songs on the iphone in iPod mode. Press "Pause" button then sleep button at top then went to sleep. Woke up the next morning
    I got about
    Usage: 11 Hours, 31 minutes
    Standby: 1 Day, 8 Hours
20% battery left (iphone warned be battery was low at 20%)
I don't get how my usage went from 3 Hours to 11 Hours, unless iPod in pause mode counts as a usage while i was sleeping. But i also pressed the sleep button to turn off the screen so whats going on? Ate like 30% of my battery or more.

I know 3g eats more power but that is not the problem I'm asking about.
    50% battery life after 3hr usage & 23hr standby...
Left ipod mode on sleep for 8hrs. Battery dropped to 20%.
so it would seem that leaving ipod on pause for 8hours eat 30% battery life over 8hrs? I expect leaving iPod on standby to eat way less power than that.
maybe it is a bug? 8hrs on pause counts as 8hrs of usage? or maybe there was a background task eating battery away since the usage went from 3hrs to 11hrs over night.

  • Oracle Apps on Itanium Processors

    Hi Friends,
I have been seeing Linux Platforms..showing
    Linux X86
    Linux Itanium
    HP UX Itanium
    Linux IBM Power Servers...
    what all these difference...
What I understood is ......Linux x86 means..Linux running on Intel processors having 32 bit capabilyt including xeon,p4, p3, AMD Athlon, AMD Opteron like that
Linux Itanium means... Only Intel Itanium Processors
HP -UX itanium mean...HP - UX Running on intel Itanum Processors
Linux IBM Power series ----Linux running on IBM Processors...
My understanding is correct or not...can anybody share...

    h,
You are correct. Just to give you an example, I have an HP Integrity server running HP-UX and RedHat AS 4 Linux. Both are two different OS, and when ordering/downloading software you have to specify the the correct port/platform version.
Currently I'm installing Release 12 for HP-UX (Itanium), release 12 for Linux Itanium is not available yet..

  • How do I stop Dashboard from eating my processor?

Lately my fan has been running way more than usual, and independently of how much work I'm making it do. When this is happening, and I take a peek at the activity monitor, its always one of three "Dashboard Client" processes that is going crazy, not responding, and using up 99% of the CPU power. Is there any way to prevent this without having to kill the process manually each time? It happens a couple of times per hour, so it's really annoying. Also, does there really need to be 3 "dashboard client" processes running at all times?

The "Dashboard Client" processes are the dashboard widgets. Some run only when you open the Dashboard, some run in the background as well. It's a minor annoyance that under Leopard they all just show as "Dashboard Client" (under Tiger, the widget name showed in the process). However, you can select the process that's hogging the CPU, click Inspect, then click the Open Files and Ports tab, and the text there, you'll see the path/name of the widget (e.g. /Library/Widgets/Dictionary.wdgt/Dictionary.widgetplugin). Once you've identified the offending widgets, remove them with the Widget Manager in Dashboard, or see if there are updated versions that may run properly.
As a side note, also check the Kind column in Activity Monitor - I see this more commonly with PPC widgets. AirTrafficControl comes to mind as a widget that had this issue.
One more tip - rather than wait for the fans to spin up to tell you that your CPU is running full out, or leaving Activity Monitor open all the time, you might consider iStat Menus, a preference pane which places a CPU activity monitor (and other monitors as well, if you like) up in the menu bar.

  • Garbage collection eating up processor power

    Hi All,
We got 5 Sun Web Servers running on Java 1.4.2, and used to use the default GC for Tenured space. The problem with that is that it takes 60-80 seconds everytime the GC happens, and the latency on the site goes crazy. So we decided to change it to use the Concurrent Mark Sweep Collector on one server to test it out. Here's the setting:
    -XX:+UseConcMarkSweepGC -XX:+UseParNewGC -Xms3G -Xmx3G -XX:NewSize=384M -XX:MaxNewSize=384M -XX:PermSize=64M -XX:MaxPermSize=64M -XX:CMSInitiatingOccupancyFraction=60
With that setting, the server runs great. But eventually, when the server reach a medium load (around 100-200 users), the tenured space is always around half full, and the CMS collector starts to run continuously one after another. It doesn't hurt the application, but it's taking 25% of processing time (we got 4 cpu, so one web server always keep 1 cpu power). I don't see that much cpu utilization on other web server that don't have CMS, and they have more users than the one with CMS. If we got CMS on all 5 web servers, I'm wondering if that will crash the server or not.
Also, I'm thinking to use i-CMS on the JVM as well even though i-CMS is optimized for 1-2 cpu machines, and maybe that might reduce the amount of CPU utilization by CMS. Any thought?
    Thanks,
    TK

  • WindowServer eating up CPU; kernel_task eating RAM

Ok well I got two problems firstly one more annoying poblem is that my WindowServer tas is totally eating my processor eventho I just restarted my computer is will quickly start driving the CPU to aorund 60% pretty penently. If I am just trying to trype a message for example on a website with flash it takesthe text ages to appear lag behawfully and even in this forum the text is lagging behind slightly while typing this message. Sometimes it is normal usually when I just restarted but in the case right now not even that seems to have helped.
Then the other problem is that kernel_task seems to be sing a lot of RAM after restart it was str8 on 160MB and then after started firefox and running for about 5 mins it is already using up 323 before I restarted it was using around 600MB is this normal? seems a little much especially when I heard it was only using aroudn 60MB for other people
Hope you guys have some tips for me!
    MacBook Pro 15" 2010, Mac OS X (10.6.7), i7 2.66MHz

thanks that may well have been the problem, but after defragmenting (iDefrag) this weekend, the problem seems to have gone, i think.
The problem started after clearing all the caches including system caches and i wonder if it was just trying to rebuild some, but the constant "clicking/whirring" sound has stopped and I am abled to run smoothly with several apps/intensive apps going without lag and beachball.
I am not totally sure if the problem has gone so may reset SMC next weekend anyway. It may have also had something to do with Safari but again I'm of course not sure as I am no Apple technician. I thought I would write as much as I could as this is probably a problem that will come up with other users and I could not find much on it.

  • What client-style apps can you run on Leopard Server?

I have a small network and therefore want my Leopard server to also support a small number of OSX applications: iTunes (including iTunes sharing), DVD Player, Safari, Mail, etc. to allow me to use it as an occasional workstation for small tasks.
Is this possible? I assume Leopard Server has all the underpinnings of Leopard, but it's not clear on the Apple web site.
Other than risking server stability, are there any other issues with doing this?
    Thanks.

I would agree with the assessment that Tiger Server is roughly as stable as Tiger Client where running 'client' applications (I would refer to them as GUI-based apps run from the console). I can't comment on the stability of Leopard Server in the same regard; haven't had it out of the box long enough yet.
You have to ask yourself how much stuff you really want to run on the server; if it's a business-critical server that you can't afford much downtime on, then installing a lot of applications will start to work against you. In addition to eating up processor and memory resources that could be used by Mail, Web service, etc., GUI-based apps may make your server somewhat more crash-prone.

  • SoftwareUpdateCheck process won't quit - hogs processor

    Hi All,
Just gave my wife a new MacBook for Xmas last month and it has the strangest bug. SoftwareUpdateCheck seems to run in the background endlessly and even when quitting it from Activity Monitor, it reappears. I've already noted the difficulty of storing packages and running the updates and such, and we definitely had that issue on her MacBook (in which data was migrated from her iBook), but eventually got the updates to stick.
Does anyone know what is causing this or how to disable the process so the MacBook can sleep and have processor time for other things? Her OS is totally up to date and I'm wondering how to squash this bug.
    Thanks!
    Mick

    Mick,
You said that you migrated some stuff from her iBook? So you have gone from G4 PPC land to Intel.
Well that sounds like part of the problem right there. If you migrated some important saved documents over then that is fine. But its been a recurring thing on here for people who have migrated Programs and Apps too through the "update" or "migrate" process to have issues.
I personally just bought a MacBook Pro last week. As with any new Mac, I always save the documents that are "keepers" (like photos, documents, music, etc..) to a external drive, then I wipe that shiny new Mac's hard drive and do a clean install. It seems to eliminate most of the potential issues.
Another thing is make sure that you replace or upgrade any software you have to Universal binaries. If you are running old PPC apps or if some PPC stuff got migrated to the new machine, it will be running under Rosetta and that will be slow, and eat the processor.
    HTH.

I made a purchase with my debit card on The Simpson Tapped out game, And now my game won't open. It just kicks me out every time I click on it. How do I fix this problem with out deleting my app?

Personally, I would never use a debit card online, for security reasons.  If your card gets hacked its your money that is stolen.  At least with a credit card it is the card providers money that is stolen.
Anyway,  I would delete the app and re-install.  If you paid for the app in the first place you will be able to re-install free of charge.  Also, the app should allow the in-app purchase to happen again as it should recognise that you have already purchased it previously.
Finally, it might be that the 3G doesnt have as much ram as more recent models of iphone and you may have applications running in the background that are preventing the app to function with the in-app purchase unless you shut down any apps eating all you memory that are running in the background.  Shut-down these apps (and the simpson tap out app) by exiting to your home screen and double-tapping the home button to show what apps are running in the background.  press and hold any of the open apps until it starts shaking.  close all the apps down.  exit then re-launch the app.
    good luck.
