  • Installation as restore from backup fails

    Dear all,
    after changing my harddisk in my iMac I want to reinstall Mac OS X using my TimeMachine Backup.
    I'm starting installation process from my original OS X CD's (Version 10.6.3)
    My Backup is from current Mountain Lion Version.
    After a short time installation fails with below stated report, see 10:37:35 marked bold. Does anyone knows anything what to do now?
    Many thanks in advance.
    Kind regards,
    Rainer

    You can't restore a backup made by Time Machine in Mountain Lion using 10.6 discs! You need to start up in Mountain Lion's recovery mode. See How do I restore my entire system?
    Since you have replaced the hard drive, that means (unfortunately) that the recovery partition is gone. However, I believe that the recovery partition gets backed up on your Time Machine backups, if you're backing up to a directly-connected hard drive. Try starting up while holding option with the Time Machine drive connected. If you see any recovery "drives" show up, boot from that and you're good.
    If that doesn't work, since your machine didn't ship with Mountain Lion (which it obviously didn't if you're able to install Snow Leopard on it), it may not be capable of internet recovery. You could always try internet recovery (hold command-option-R at startup), as there was a firmware update for certain machines a while back that added this capability... though that might only give you Lion, I'm not entirely sure how it works.
    If all else fails, you'll need to install Snow Leopard, then update to Mountain Lion. (Save a copy of the installer for the future, and make a bootable Mountain Lion disk from it.) That will give you back the recovery partition so you can restore.

  • What is the correct procedure to follow after restoring a Mac from a Time Machine Backup?

    Hi all,
    I did a Time Machine backup of my entire system (Time Machine Backup 1) before bringing my Macbook Pro to the Apple Store to to have it tested.   After the TM backup I wiped the laptop leaving only the OS (Mountain Lion) on it so that I could determine whether the problems with my system were hardware or software related. The computer passed all tests.
    After bringing my Macbook home I did a fresh intall of all the software and everything worked fine.  At this point I did another Time Machine backup (in the same location as the previous backup) so that if I ever had problems with my system I could revert to this working backup (Time Machine Backup 2.0).  I used my laptop without issue and created a number of new documents.  I did not transfer the documents from the previous time machine backup (Time Machine Backup 1).  As time progressed I did regular Time Machine backups (backups 2.1 etc.) installed a few new pieces of software and started having system issues again.
    At that point I did another Time Machine backup (in the same location as the previous backups) (Time Machine Backup 3) so that my new documents would be safe.  At this point I could see all of my TM backups in finder.  Then I used Command + R while booting up and restored my system from what I thought was the clean backup (Time Machine Backup 2).  In fact it the TM backup I used was not the correct backup (It was one of the backups between 2.0 and 3 and I needed to go back further).  I was concerned, at this point, because I did not (and still do not) know what type of effect restoring the system from an old Time Machine backup would have on the Time Machine structure going forward  I was unsure whether doing so and having an "old" system backed up might break the structure so I stopped Time Machine from running a new backup.
    When I attempted to look for one of the older versions of the Time Machine backups I discovered that there were no longer any listings for TM backups in their previous location.  In fact, the only thing I could see was one line in the place where the multiple backups were previously.  I took my laptop and NAS (where the TM backups were stored) to the Apple Store and the "genius" said something about the TM backup being "parsed"?  He also described it as a "broken window" and he "sees the broken glass but has no idea how it broke".  He also said "neither he nor anyone at Apple would be able to assist me" and that I'd have to go to a data recovery place.
    Fortunately I did use a second drive to backup the original system (Backup 1) but I really don't want to lose the files created ater Backup 2 / prior to Backup 3.
    Does anyone know what happened / how I can get my Time Machine backups back without forking out tons of cash?
    thanks
    John

    I actually already checked Pondini's and didn't find the answer.  Any other suggestions?

  • IMAP error messages "Error while parsing IMAP response"

    I'm getting thousands of IMAP errors every hour, can I shut those off?
    My console log is flooded with them and it keeps me from seeing anything else
    in the system log.  The IMAP errors happen continuously while Mail.app is running.
    It looks like debug output from Mail.app !?!
    IMAP server is Beehive Server -- it's my company email so I need to use it.
    Windows Outlook (Windows 7) shows no errors, possibly they're silently ignored
    on Windows.  My disk is writing almost continuously when Mail.appo is running.
    Sample error:  (thousands are generated per hour)
    Apr  8 10:29:18 Js-Coolio-iMac.local Mail[22903]: Error while parsing IMAP response (null): Incomplete response
              Remaining text: <    Gian Luigi<br>>
              Full text: <    Gian Luigi<br>>
    Any idea how to shut these off?  I reinstalled Mavericks, no improvement as expected
    since this seems to be Mail complaining about IMAP protocol issues.
    Thanks in advance for any suggestions.  And yes I've rebooted, reinstalled the IMAP account,
    reinstalled Mavericks, etc.

  • Time machine osx 10.6.8 problem slow backupd CFPropertyListCreateFromXMLData(): Old-style plist parser: missing semicolon in dictionary. mdworker32 kCGErrorFailure: Set a breakpoint @ CGErrorBreakpoint() to catch errors as they are logged.

    Hello Guys I have a problem that I can not get to the bottom.
    Time Machine has suddenly stopped working it really slow to make up. Copy a few kb at a time and long hours it takes to close the back. (up to a few tens of megs, 10, 20 Mb).
    I made the following list of tests that will follow along with the log file.
    First of all I made a copy as root with Carbon Copy Cloner disk of the iMac. (So that they can go back in case of disaster)
    Following the guides Pondini (pondini.org) I did the following steps:
    1) Changed the internfaccia FW800 to USB hard drive (does not change anything, still slow)
    2) Changed to another external HD for time machine with FW800 and USB (nothing changes still slow)
    3) Recreated the full backup with Time Machine on either drive (still slow)
    4) Reinstalled the 10.6.8 Combo Pack (still slow)
    5) Re spootlight indexed with the disk (still slow)
    6) At this point, in desperation I reinstalled on the internal drive of my iMac 10.6.8 creating a new user, User Migration Assistant from my hd clone with Carbon Copy Cloner. Recreated the full backup with Time Machine.
    The first full backup is fast, but slow incremental backups are back (as to 'start a few kb at a time).
    I compared the log files with those of my other machine with same configuration and I found these errors:
    backupdir [19376]: CFPropertyListCreateFromXMLData (): Old-style plist parser: missing semicolon in dictionary.
    mdworker32 [20950]: kCGErrorFailure: Set a breakpoint @ CGErrorBreakpoint () to catch errors logged as They Are.
    You know help me? I saw that this error is from 10.5 to 10.7, but no one has found a real solution to the issue.
    I never installed antivirus software and tried with different external drives COPN capacity equal to or greater than the external drive. Only at the end I tried to divide the external drive to back up into two parts by a 1.5 TB and 500 GB but with the same mistakes that I have described.
    thanks
    Stefano
    backupd[19376]: CFPropertyListCreateFromXMLData(): Old-style plist parser: missing semicolon in dictionary.
    mdworker32[20950]: kCGErrorFailure: Set a breakpoint @ CGErrorBreakpoint() to catch errors as they are logged.
    Sapete darmi aiuto?
    grazie
    Stefano

    Thanks for the quick response.
    I followed the steps you listed and also remove the files that were creating problems spootlight, including the audio plugin and the panel preferences file.
    Then I stopped by the timemachine reindexed spootlight 'option in the preferences panel spootight privacy. After I restarted my iMac and formatted the external drive again, Time Machine and restarting a full backup. This morning after a quick full backup and disk indexing completed incremental backups are always slow. Proceeds with a few kb at a time. I resend you the log files and screen capture. My iMac is constantly backed up.
    Thank you for your time.

  • Feature request: Importing/backup/archive of tracks with metadata

    Hi everyone,
    I've found that one of the things iTunes does better than any other music player is handling and organising song information. Have you ever seen a PC user's jukebox? Thos things are a real mess, with cryptic track names ("mike mills - air - talkie walkie - 05"), artists in the album column, etc...
    All of this information which describes the file itself is called "meta-data", and iTunes handles meta-data in two seperate places: the song file itself (ID3 tags in MP3s, for instance) and the iTunes library file.
    You'll notice that when you drag a music file from one iTunes library to another, the meta-data stored in the file itself is preserved (artist, title, track number, etc...), while the meta-data stored in the iTunes library isn't (your rating, the play count, the last date played, etc...).
    What I'm suggesting here is a feature that allows one to:
    (a) make a folder / burn a disk with the song files AND a special iTunes meta-data (XML?) file, so that all meta-data is preserved,
    (b) optionally delete the music files from your library after backup (i.e. archiving), and naturally,
    (c) open and read backup/archive folders and disks, and allow one to reintegrate songs, playlists or the entire collection back into one's main music library.
    I hope Apple is listening, because I think this feature would be really easy to implement, and would make a lot of people (especially those who keep their music spread across 2 or more computers) very happy!
    I've already set up a smart playlist ("Give me 4.5 GiB of disabled (unchecked) tracks from my library, sorted by least recently added") that gives me the candidates for archival. Now, all I'm hoping for is a button that allows me to archive (move) everything to a DVD, clear some space on my PowerBook hard drive and rest assured that if I ever want to go back and retrieve a track, it'll be waiting, with the playcounts, song information and ratings all intact!
    ...either that or make all hard drives at least 1000 times bigger. I'm not picky.
    Cheers,
    - tonyboy
    PowerBook G4

    Thank you for an idea!
    I wrote a simple script to get metadata from files and offset AE clip times respectively. It is quite dirtycoded but does the job for me. Maybe someone will want to use this script, so I put it on a public accessible URL: http://zig-zag.ru/usefulshit/ae/xmp_time_shifter.jsx
    My workflow is as follows:
    - I separate camera footages (.mov, .jpg, etc...), and put them to folders like camera_01, camera_02 etc
    - create new project in AE, new composition - named "camera_01_p1", import files from camera_01 folder to a project panel, drag'n'drop them to a compo, select "camera_01_p1" compo and run xmp_time_shifter.jsx
    - I have 8 hours of footage, so I duplicate "camera_01_p1" composition, name it "camera_01_p2", delete all layers but unshifted ones, rerun time shifter script, repeat with the rest
    - do the same with camera_02 (don't forget to adjust still photo layer duration before time shifting)
    - export to a premiere project (yeah, thank you for this one!)
    - then I open project in premiere, copy everything to a same sequence (different layers where needed)
    - last thing is to sync entire video and photo layers at some known moment - it is done easily by placing marker at some time feature on different video/audio clips, and manually shifting entire layer to sync
    - profit!
    Since we are allready offtopic to premiere, I place some of my notes here:
    - XMPFile function does not read files like "/d/path" on my windows 7, so I replaced them with "d:/"
    - don't understand why, but this check - if(fname != null){ is not working. So script will fail on compositions with solid, null, etc. layers.
    - I wrote simple date parser that is currently working with Nikon D3 (.jpg) and Canon 5D mk2 (.mov) but it can fail on some other models/formats.

    Time Machine spends hours partially backing up and then fails with "Time Machine couldn't complete the backup due to a network problem."  I've tried various suggestions I've seen on the forum but nothing has worked.  TIme Machine worked fine for the last two years and just suddenly started having this problem every time.  The only thing that was a little different is that the computer was off for a week while on vacation and then I added a large amount (20 GB) of photos. Now the requested backup size is 82GB, which is large, and process proceeds very slowly for 2-3 hours before failing with the message mentioned.  I have more than enough available backup storage space for it.  Before failing, Time Machine has backed up no more than 12GB or so of the backup.  It fails during different files each time.
    I've turned off the computer sleep feature, and I've checked that the NAS is set to never automatically power down. I normally backup over Wi-Fi, but I've also tried connecting to Ethernet and it still has the same problem.  It's odd because I also have a MacBook Pro that is still backing up fine to the same NAS using the MacBook's Time Machine.
    I am using an iMac with OS X 10.6.8 and an Iomega StorCenter ix2-200 NAS.
    I have system logs that I can share if helpful.  The logged messages vary a bit from run to run, but here are some messages that I've been seeing:
    I always get this message near the beginning of the backup:
    Event store UUIDs don't match for volume: Macintosh HD
    I've gotten this messsage a number of times:
    Bulk setting Spotlight attributes failed.

    That looks like a problem was found with the file system (data) on the TM disk.  I don't know the details, but OSX tried to recover it from the journal, and found extra data on the drive.    Likely a result of the incompatibility mentioned above.

    That's a problem writing to the NAS drive.
    But the backup continued after all this.

    Something caused a disconnect.  Can't tell from the log what it was.
    I doubt it's a problem with something in OSX being damaged or corrupted, but reinstalling OSX isn't a major hassle, so might be worth a try.
    To be incompatible with Snow Leopard, this NAS must be at least a couple of years old.  It may be beginning to fail.
    Contact the maker.  See if there's an update to make it compatible with Snow Leopard.  If so, that might fix it.
    If not, or if that doesn't fix it, see if they have any diagnostics that will shed any light.

  • Freezing/crash of iMac under Snow Leopard when backup with Time Machine

    Hi!
    The backup on my external hard drive with Time Machine cannot be completed.
    After few ten Go out of 360Go the backup stops suddenly and the computer freezes/crashes.
    I have got an iMac Intel Core 2 Duo with Snow Leopard 10.6.8 − 64 bit. The external hard drive is a LaCie 500Go.
    Also, backups for another Apple computer can be done with this LaCie external drive. So, it is not the cause of the freezing/crash of the iMac.
    I tried to solve this problem applying the following steps:
    1- I started with the installation disk.
    2- I repaired the internal iMac drive and the permissions with the Disk Utilities soft on the installation disk. All was OK.
    3- The LaCie drive was erased, formatted again with one GUID partition (500Go) and the disk verified. All was OK.
    4- I re-install the OS with the installation disk -> 10.6 Snow Leopard
    5- Updates to 10.6.8, etc… security update 2012-004 and the 13th Java update to v1.6.
    6- I deleted in the folder /Library/Preferences the file com.apple.TimeMachine.plist
    7- I deleted the file com.apple.finder.plist in the administrator account Preferences folder.
    8- The iMac was shutdowned as well as the external LaCie drive.
    9- I restarted and changed the name of the external LaCie drive.
    10- I choose the LaCie backup drive with Preferences System > Time Machine with right exclusions.
    Unfortunately, the problem remained and the backup was again unsuccessful followed by another freezing/crash of the iMac.
    So how to solve this problem?
    Here is what I obtained from the system.log with the Console utility (crash/freezing at: 10:48):

  • Backup/Recovery from web application

    Hello guys,
    I am using Oracle 9i as DB and Oracle 9iAS for web application server. I want to provide Backup and Recovery functionality to the user via web. I don't know any thing in this regard.
    Is it possible that we can take backup and recovery from web application?
    Is there any alternative for this function.
    any other comments will be appreciated.
    Thank you,
    Jawed Nazar Ali

    Read this article in order to get an idea about Java Stored Procedures.
    Oracle Developer JAVA STORED PROCEDURES
    Simplify with Java Stored Procedures
    By Kuassi Mensah
    Use Java stored procedures to bridge SQL, XML, Java, and J2EE and Web Services.
    Stored procedures allow a clean separation of persistence logic that runs in the database tier from business logic that runs in the middle tier. This separation reduces overall application complexity and increases reuse, security, performance, and scalability.
    A major obstacle, however, for widespread adoption of stored procedures is the set of various proprietary, database-dependent implementation languages that different database vendors use. The use of Java-based stored procedures fixes this concern. Oracle has implemented ANSI standards that specify the ability to invoke static Java methods from SQL as procedures or functions. This implementation is called simply "Java stored procedures."
    In this article, you will learn how Java stored procedures help simplify and increase the performance of your business logic and extend database functionality. I'll show how Oracle enables the use of Java stored procedures within the database. I'll also look at how Java stored procedures access data, and show how to create a basic Java stored procedure.
    PL/SQL or Java
    When you think of Oracle stored procedures, you probably think of PL/SQL. Oracle, however, has provided Java support in the database since Oracle8i, to offer an open and portable alternative to PL/SQL for stored procedures. I can hear the $64,000 question: "How do I choose between PL/SQL and Java? Should I forget all the things I've been told about PL/SQL and move on to the greener Java pastures?"
    Both languages are suitable for database programming, and each has its strengths and weaknesses. In deciding which language to use, here's a general rule of thumb:
    Use PL/SQL for database-centric logic that requires seamless integration with SQL and therefore complete access to database objects, types, and features.
    Use Java as an open alternative to PL/SQL for database independence, but also for integrating and bridging the worlds of SQL, XML, J2EE, and Web services.
    OracleJVM Lets You Run Java within the Database
    Since Oracle8i, Release 1 (Oracle 8.1.5), Oracle has offered a tightly integrated Java virtual machine (JVM) that supports Oracle's database session architecture. Any database session may activate a virtually dedicated JVM during the first Java code invocation; subsequent users then benefit from this already Java-enabled session. In reality, all sessions share the same JVM code and statics—only private states are kept and garbage collected in an individual session space, to provide Java sessions the same session isolation and data integrity capabilities as SQL operations. There is no need for a separate Java-enabled process for data integrity. This session-based architecture provides a small memory footprint and gives OracleJVM the same linear SMP scalability as the Oracle database.
    Creating Java Stored Procedures
    There are a few steps involved in turning a Java method into a Java stored procedure. These include loading the Java class into the database using the loadjava utility, and publishing the Java methods using a call specification (Call Spec) to map Java methods, parameter types, and return types to their SQL counterparts. The following section shows how to do this.
    I'll use a simple Hello class, with one method, Hello.world(), that returns the string "Hello world":
    public class Hello
    public static String world ()
    return "Hello world";
    The Loadjava Utility
    Loadjava is a utility for loading Java source files, Java class files, and Java resource files; verifying bytecodes; and deploying Java classes and JAR files into the database. It is invoked either from the command line or through the loadjava() method contained within the DBMS_JAVA class. To load our Hello.class example, type:
    loadjava -user scott/tiger Hello.class
    As of Oracle9i Release 2, loadjava allows you to automatically publish Java classes as stored procedures by creating the corresponding Call Specs for methods contained in the processed classes. Oracle provides Oracle9i JDeveloper for developing, testing, debugging, and deploying Java stored procedures.
    The Resolver Spec
    The JDK-based JVM looks for and resolves class references within the directories listed in the CLASSPATH. Because Oracle database classes live in the database schema, the OracleJVM uses a database resolver to look for and resolve class references through the schemas listed in the Resolver Spec. Unlike the CLASSPATH, which applies to all classes, the Resolver Spec is applied on a per-class basis. The default resolver looks for classes first in the schema in which the class is loaded and then for classes with public synonyms.
    loadjava -resolve <myclass>
    You may need to specify different resolvers, and you can force resolution to occur when you use loadjava, to determine at deployment time any problems that may occur later at runtime.
    loadjava -resolve -resolver "((* SCOTT) (foo/bar/* OTHERS)
    (* PUBLIC))"
    Call Spec and Stored Procedures Invocation
    To invoke a Java method from SQL (as well as from PL/SQL and JDBC), you must first publish the public static method through a Call Spec, which defines for SQL the arguments the method takes and the SQL types it returns.
    In our example, we'll use SQL*Plus to connect to the database and define a top-level Call Spec for Hello.world():
    SQL> connect scott/tiger
    SQL> create or replace function helloworld return
    VARCHAR2 as language java name 'Hello.world () return
    java.lang.String';
    Function created.
    You can then invoke the Java stored procedure as shown below:
    SQL> variable myString varchar2[20];
    SQL> call helloworld() into :myString;
    Call completed.
    SQL> print myString;
    MYSTRING
    Hello world
    Java stored procedures are callable, through their Call Spec, from SQL DML statements (INSERT, UPDATE, DELETE, SELECT, CALL, EXPLAIN PLAN, LOCK TABLE, and MERGE), PL/SQL blocks, subprograms, and packages, as well as database triggers. The beauty of Call Spec is that stored procedure implementations can change over time from PL/SQL to Java or vice versa, transparently to the requesters.
    Call Spec abstracts the call interface from the implementation language (PL/SQL or Java) and therefore enables sharing business logic between legacy applications and newer Java/J2EE-based applications. At times, however, when invoking a database-resident Java class from a Java client, you may not want to go through the PL/SQL wrapper. In a future release, Oracle plans to provide a mechanism that will allow developers to bypass the Call Spec.
    Advanced Data-Access Control
    Java stored procedures can be used to control and restrict access to Oracle data by allowing users to manipulate the data only through stored procedures that execute under their invoker's privileges while denying access to the table itself. For example, you can disable updates during certain hours or give managers the ability to query salary data but not update it, or log all access and notify a security service.
    Sharing Data Logic Between Legacy and J2EE Applications
    Because legacy applications and J2EE applications both invoke stored procedures through the Call Spec, the same data logic can be shared between J2EE and non-J2EE worlds. Thanks to Call Spec, this data logic can be shared regardless of the implementation language used (whether PL/SQL or Java).
    Autogeneration of Primary Keys for BMP Entity Beans
    When using BMP for EJB entity beans, a bean instance can be uniquely identified by the auto-generated primary key associated with the newly inserted data as a return value for ejbCreate(). You can retrieve this value within ejbCreate() in one database operation by using a stored procedure that inserts the corresponding data and retrieves or computes the primary key. Alternatively, you could insert the data and retrieve the corresponding key (or ROWID) in one SQL statement, using the RETURN_GENERATED_KEYS feature in JDBC 3.0. However, the stored procedure approach is more portable across JDBC driver versions and databases.
    You can implement this pattern with these three steps:
    Create the Java stored procedure, defining a public static Java method insertAccount() within a public GenPK class. This method will insert data, compute a unique key (by passing out a sequence number), and return the computed key as primary key.
    Define the Call Spec.
    CREATE OR REPLACE PROCEDURE insertAccount(owner IN
    varchar, bal IN number, newid OUT number)
    AS LANGUAGE JAVA NAME 'GenPK.insertAccount(
    java.lang.String [])';
    Invoke the stored procedure within ejbCreate().
    Public AccountPK ejbCreate(String ownerName, int balance) throws CreateException
    try {
    CallableStatement call = conn.prepareCall{
    "{call insertAccount(?, ?, ?)}"};
    return new AccountPK(accountID);
    Custom Primary Key Finders for CMP Entity Beans
    Finder methods are used for retrieving existing EJB entity bean instances. Primary key finders allow you to retrieve a uniquely identified EJB instance. For CMP entity beans, the EJB container automatically generates the primary key finder findByPrimaryKey() method, based on declarative description. In some situations, however, you might need more control; for example, you may need a specialized finder such as findByStoredProcKey(). In these situations, you can use Java stored procedures in conjunction with an object relational framework (such as Oracle9i Application Server [Oracle9iAS] TopLink) to implement a custom primary key finder method. After you define the EJB finder as a REDIRECT or NAMED finder, TopLink will generate the SQL query for retrieving the bean instance.
    Data-Driven EJB Invocation
    In a data-driven architecture, business logic invocation can be triggered as a result of database operations (such as inserts, updates, or deletes). A Java stored procedure implementing the data logic can be declared as a database trigger to invoke EJBs running in a middle-tier J2EE application server. You can make EJB calls by using either standard remote method invocation (RMI) over Interoperable Inter-ORB Protocol (IIOP), using a J2EE 1.3 compatible server, or RMI over a vendor-specific transport protocol (such as ORMI with Oracle9iAS/OC4J or RMI over T3 with BEA WebLogic). Each application server vendor has its own optimized protocol while providing RMI over IIOP for interoperability. Oracle9iAS supports both RMI calls over IIOP and ORMI protocols.
    Data-Driven Messaging
    Oracle9i Database embeds Advanced Queuing (AQ), which is an integrated, persistent, reliable, secure, scalable, and transactional message-queuing framework. Oracle exposes AQ features to Java developers through the standard Java Messaging System (JMS) API. Java stored procedures can invoke AQ operations through the JMS interface to allow fast, intra-session, scalable, data-driven messaging.
    Java stored procedures can use JMS to invoke AQ operations. You can implement this pattern in four steps:
    Create and start the JMS Queue (to do so, embed the following operations within a SQL script):
    execute dbms_aqadm.create_queue_table(queue_table =>
    'queue1', queue_payload_type =>
    'SYS.AQ$_JMS_TEXT_MESSAGE', comment => 'a test queue',
    multiple_consumers => false, compatible => '8.1.0');
    execute dbms_aqadm.create_queue( queue_name => 'queue1',
    queue_table => 'queue1' );
    execute dbms_aqadm.start_queue(queue_name => 'queue1');
    Create the Java stored procedure (a code snippet is shown):
    public static void runTest(String msgBody)
    try
    // get database connection
    ora_drv = new OracleDriver();
    db_conn = ora_drv.defaultConnection();
    // setup sender (cf online code sample)
    // create message
    s_msg = s_session.createTextMessage(msgBody);
    // send message
    sender.send(s_msg);
    s_session.commit();
    // receive message
    r_msg = (TextMessage) receiver.receive();
    r_session.commit();
    // output message text
    String body = r_msg.getText();
    System.out.println("message was '"+body+"'");
    Create the Call Spec:
    create or replace procedure jmsproc (t1 IN VARCHAR)
    as language java name 'jmsSample.main (java.lang.String[])';
    Invoke the stored procedure:
    call jmsproc('hello');
    Database-Assisted Web Publishing (Cache Invalidation)
    One of the common issues application architects must face is how to cache database information reliably to increase overall system performance. JCACHE is an upcoming standard specification (JSR 107) that addresses this problem. It specifies an approach for temporary, in-memory caching of Java objects, including object creation, shared access, spooling, invalidation, and consistency across JVMs. It can be used to cache read-mostly data such as product catalogs and price lists within JSP. Using JCACHE, most queries will have response times an order of magnitude faster because of cached data (in-house testing showed response times about 15 times faster).
    In order to track all the changes to the origin data and refresh the cached data, a Java stored procedure is attached to a table as a trigger. Any change to this table will result in the automatic invocation of this stored procedure, which in turn will call out a defined JSP to invalidate the JCACHE object that maps its state to the database table. Upon invalidation, the very next query will force the cache to be refreshed from the database. Next Steps

    Extending Database Functionality
    One of the great things about running Java code directly in the database is the ability to implement new functionality by simply loading the code or library and using the Call Spec to make the entry points (public static methods) available to SQL, PL/SQL, Java, J2EE, and non-Java APIs. Oracle9i Database customers can easily extend database functionality. Oracle itself leverages this capability for new utilities and packages such as the XML Developer Kits (XDKs).
    Bridging SQL, PL/SQL, Java, J2EE, .NET, and XML
    The Oracle XDK is written in Java and exposes its public methods as Java stored procedures, extending the database's XML programmability. SQL, PL/SQL, Java, J2EE, and non-Java (.NET) business logic all have access to the XML parser, the XSLT processor, the XPath engine, and XML SQL Utility (XSU).
    The XML parser is accessible through the xmlparser and xmldom packages. XSU is a Java utility that generates an XML document from SQL queries or a JDBC ResultSet, and writes data from an XML document into a database table or view. Using XSU, XML output can be produced as Text, DOM trees, or DTDs. XSU is exposed to PL/SQL through the dbms_xmlquery and dbms_xmlsave packages.
    Conclusion
    The integration of the Oracle database with a Java VM enables the creation of portable, powerful, database-independent data logic and persistence logic. The loose coupling of business logic that runs in the middle tier with data logic that runs in the database tier improves application scalability, performance, flexibility, and maintenance.

  • Time machine won't backup

    I've been having a lot of issues with time machine lately.
    A couple of days back I suddenly got the message that time machine didn't make backups for over 22 days! The first thing I thought was: why am I just now learning about this but okay let's check out why. Every time TM wanted to make a backup it would hang in the "calculating changes" phase. What I tried was the following:
    - Disconnection the TM disk, restarting my Time capsule or macbook didn't work.
    - Niether did turning TM on and of and reselecting the disk.
    I went searching on the web and there I found a recommendation to scan the sparsebundle file and my harddrive for defects so I did that today. No defects were found in the sparsebundle file but something was found on my MacBook's harddrive so I booted with the Snow Leopard disk to have this repaired with Disk uitility. This all went fine so I went ahead and enabled TM again. At first I thought nothing had changed since it was still spending an awfull lot of time in the "calculating changes' phase but then I saw that at least my network connection was beeing used so I waited some time and after a while TM progressed to the "scanning xxx.xxx files" phase and the "preparing xxx.xxx files" phase. Then the "cleaning up" phase began and was displayed for at least 15 minutes. I thought everything was going well but then the backup was suddenly cancelled and everything started all over again.
    In my syslog the following sequence is showing:
    Jul 23 22:18:39 Simons-MacBook com.apple.backupd[2417]: Starting standard backup

    It looks like TM is going through a backup cycle, establisching the fact that not enough space is availeble and trying to clean up the sparsebundle file to make room for the new backup. After two tries though it discovers that no space is reclaimed but that in fact only space is lost. It then tries to create some space by using the diskimages helper.
    Every run the free space on my time capsule is getting less and less:

    It seems that TM is stuck in some never ending cycle... I'm out of idea's on how to solve this apart from deleting the sparsebundle file and starting all over again but this would mean losing all previous backups.
    Do you guys have any leads?

    No idea's?
    I'm starting to think I just need to delete the sparsebundle file altogether and start over again...

  • Need help on parsing xml file...

    Hi all,
    I need to collect some data from an Xml file using java. I have the following code with me but I am unable to get the required result. I am unable to get the data from the tags belonging to the header and footer elements. Please find the code and the sample xml file below.
    Program to parse XML:
    import java.io.IOException;
    import java.util.ArrayList;
    import java.util.Iterator;
    import java.util.List;

    1. your code does not compile (in your main method you try to create an instance of a class which does not exist).
    2. your XML document is not well formed.
    +[Fatal Error] test.xml:34:74: The content of elements must consist of well-formed character data or markup.+
    org.xml.sax.SAXParseException: The content of elements must consist of well-formed character data or markup.
    Maybe there are other problems but you can start by fixing these.

  • Mailing lists are no longer being parsed for individual address to be placed in the email 'To' field.

    When I attempt to use a Mailing List, which has worked in the past, to supply the addresses for an email which I wish to send, it fails with an error message as per this example:
    "MAILING LIST NAME (current)" <"MAILING LIST NAME (current)"> is not a valid e-mail address because it is not of the form user@host. You must correct it before sending the e-mail.
    It seems that Thunderbird can no longer parse the Mailing List for the individual names and addresses.
    Do you need any more info?
    Thanks for your help.

    As you may need this fixed quickly: You could uninstall the current version via Control panel > Programs and Features and reinstall a previous version, download from here:
    Version 31.0:
    * ftp://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/thunderbird/releases/31.0/
    Version 24.7:
    * ftp://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/thunderbird/releases/24.7.0/
    click on the type for your OS. eg: If using Windows select 'win32'
    then select the language eg: en-GB = English british
    then download the .exe file
    The thunderbird program is not stored in the same place as your thunderbird Profile. So, uninstalling and reinstalling should not effect anything in the profile folder including emails, address books etc.
    However, it is always a good idea to backup your Profile, just in case :) You can use tools such as MoxBackup and/or ImportExporttool or manually copy your Profile folder to an external device. All info at links below:

  • How to get status of a backup job

    Hello everybody,
    I scheduled our daily RMAN backup using the DBMS_SCHEDULER package. The DB job calls an external batch file which in turns calls rman's executable and passes it a command file containing the actual backup script. Similar to what's described here:
    Problems with automated RMAN Backup in Oracle 11GR1 with DBMS_SCHEDULER
    The backup works perfectly. The problem is that if I intentially corrupt the command file (simulating a backup failure) so that the backup fails, and then query the dba_scheduler_job_log view, I always get a status of SUCCEEDED. Regardless of the actual backup outcome, the job seems to always succeed. That's a problem for me, because I'd like to set up a user defined metric which would check the status of the job in dba_scheduler_job_log. If the job wasn't successfully executed, a mail would be sent.
    Does anybody know why the job doesn't fail when it should? I also tried to execute the failing script manually and then checked the %ERRORLEVEL% environment variable. It has a value of 1, meaning error.
    Btw, I know that if I schedule the same backup with Enterprise Manager's job system (instead of DBMS_SCHEDULER), the backup failure is correctly reported (and the metric works). The issue with EM is its limited scheduling capability - I do a full backup on Sunday, a cummulative incremental backup on Wednesday and all the other days a differential incremental backup. Since now I haven't found a way to define a schedule with an appropriate repeating interval. The only solution I figured out is to have 7 jobs, one for each day of the week....
    Thanks in advance for any answers,
    Jure

    Hi,
    @alanm: I completely forgot checking that view :-) Using it is a solution, but I should probably set up a job chain to handle that (run backup & chack status in the view afterwards)....if there isn't be another solution, maye I'll do that. But then, maybe using 7 EM jobs is a simpler solution.
    @RnR: I tried to execute the batch file manually from the command line like that:
    C:\>echo %errorlevel%
    0
    C:\>rman target / cmdfile=backup_full.rcv
    Recovery Manager: Release 10.2.0.3.0 - Production on Sre Jul 2 09:46:37 2008
    Copyright (c) 1982, 2005, Oracle. All rights reserved.
    connected to target database: TESTDB (DBID=2890535676)
    RMAN> RUN
    2> {
    3> aa;
    RMAN-00571: ===========================================================
    RMAN-00569: =============== ERROR MESSAGE STACK FOLLOWS ===============

    RMAN-01007: at line 3 column 1 file: backup_full.rcv
    C:\>echo %errorlevel%
    1
    So the if the script fails, I get an errorlevel of 1. Is it possible that the status isn't propagated back to the Oracle job?
    @alanm: I'm already appending to the log, but I don't see how can that affect the outcome status of the job?
    Thanks for your answers.
    Regards,
    Jure

  • Time Machine deleted all backups

    Just got a TM error message saying my 3TB drive needed 1.68TB and there was only 1.3 TB available. I thought this unlikely as my target drive should only require an incremental backup (1.68TB being a full backup). So I clicked 'back up now' (daft, I know) and Time Machine deleted everything and started a brand new backup which I immediately stopped. The TM drive still says there's only 1.3TB available which means my older backups are still in there somewhere, right?
    While I don't think I've anything on the backup that I need, I'm worried how this could happen - 4 months of backups just vanished instantly.
    Any ideas?
    Cheers,
    SNaP

    Thanks for the reply, Linc,
    First thing is there's no 'Starting standard backup' string, but I'm assuming the 'starting automatic backup' is our boy. I've deleted most of the texts where it says its 'deleting expired backups' (about 35 in all), and I've deleted other repetetive lines but I'm reluctant to delete more as I might be throwing out the baby with the bathwater. The string finished with my creating a new Time Machine backup on a separate drive ('Storage 3'). The original Time Machine backup was named 'Mac Companion'. The two drives being backed up were 'SSD' and '2TB HD'.
