Part 2 of Identity Interview Series on SDN: "OpenSSO, a Thriving Community"

In this interview at http://developers.sun.com/identity/reference/techart/opensso.html, Sun federation architect Pat Patterson reflects on OpenSSO, Sun's open-source project for single sign-on, outlining its mission, adoption, challenges, future, and an unexpected boon to Sun. Illuminating insights!

Hi Eddy -
Thanks very much for the advice; it will probably work out that way anyway because right now I'm really interested in doing a good enough initial "trial-run" that  Valery/Rich will be willing to get involved in a mini-collaboration that I'm right now working to start up with an opening post in "Test/Playground".
Anyway, since you're taking some time off, I beg you to take a look at the first two paragraphs of this link:
<a href="http://www.kcoyle.net/granfalloons.html">ReCatsCradle</a>.
and also then read Kurt Vonnegut's short novel "Cat's Cradle" if you haven't already.
It is amazing how Vonnegut's notions of a "granfaloon" and a "karass" are related to various events that transpire here at SDN.
Take care of yourself, buddy.
Best regards
djh

  • Discuss SAP NetWeaver in the Real World Series

Hello SAP NetWeaver Platform forum denizens! I, Jennifer Lankheim, am a senior editor of SDN.
Our recently launched series, "SAP NetWeaver in the Real World" has generated some heated Letters to the Editor, as it were, so the SDN editorial team thought it would be a great idea to open a forum where SDN community members could discuss the series. For example, do you think there was a better technological approach for Iridium Motors? Do you agree or disagree with any statements made in the articles?
We, the editors, would also love to hear what you think about the series in general - has it captured your interest? Would you like to see more SDN content like this in the future? Would you like to see REAL case studies, detailing REAL implementations? Let us know!
    Cheers,

  • How to get the value of identity template

    Hello,
i have a AD resource and i want to get the identity model value in a form. Is it possible to do it ?
    Thanks

A Resource object has a method getIdentityTemplate but its result type won't be easy to use inside a form.
What kind of information are you exactly interested in?
For example if you need to know which resource attributes are part of the identity template, you can find this information directly in the user view, i.e. :
    <ref>accountInfo.accounts[Active Directory].attributes[idTemplate=true].name</ref>

  • Significance of the AppPool Identity?

I am trying to deploy SharePoint 2010 web parts. When trying to configure the data source of one of them, it says that the .svc service could not be activated. When I check IIS, the Identity of the service is ApplicationPoolIdentity. When I checked a different
server that deployed the same web parts, it's identity was spAppPool, which is not a user on that server.
    So my questions are...
    1) Should I change the Identity that's associated with the service that could not be activated?
    2) Where is spAppPool? If it was created in IIS, could that explain why I can't find it?
Truth be told, I am uncertain what this is causing, as the logs I've been able to access isn't clear to me. If I have the diagnosis wrong, feel free to say so. Otherwise, I am focused on the scenario that Applcation Pool identity is the issue.
    Chris Lee

    Hi Chris,
The identity of an application pool is the name of the service account under which the application pool's worker process runs. For every application pool you create, the Identity property of the new application pool is set to
    ApplicationPoolIdentity by default.
You can also configure a custom account to serve as an application pool's identity. Any custom account you choose should have only the minimum rights that your application requires. A custom account is useful in the following situations:
When you want to improve security and make it easier to trace security events to the corresponding application.
When you are hosting Web sites for multiple customers on a single Web server. If you use the same process account for multiple customers, source code from one customer's application may be able to access source code from another customer's
application. In this case, you should also configure a custom account for the anonymous user account.
When an application requires rights or permissions in addition to the default permissions for an application pool. In this case, you can create an application pool and assign a custom identity to the new application pool.
For this issue, I suggest you change the Identity of the application pool to the farm account in your SharePoint farm.
If this issue still exists, please provide more information about this error.
For the spAppPool, please check if it is an account in the SharePoint farm.

  • What is SDN for?

What is the purpose of SDN? A developer community, a dumping ground for third parties to promote their organisations/products, somewhere for individuals to raise their profiles? In my humble opinion. I see SDN as a developer community. Community being the operative word here. I believe it should be a place where people actively using SAP products can collobrate and help each other.
To provide support for each other (FORUMS)
    Document problems/solutions we've experienced (BLOGS)
Develop a repository of useful information (WIKI).
In addition to this I would have also thought SAP might like to use this as a place to provide useful and informative documentation for developers. Lets take marketing, sales and consultants out of the equation and concentrate on the products that are being used. When I come to SDN I'm not looking for someone's thoughts on the future of e-commerce in distribution or how fantastic SAP products are. I'm coming to SDN to resolve a particular problem or investigate a solution in more depth. That's not to say that these sorts of documents aren't useful, when I have time I like to keep myself updated with new developments & thoughts, but not when I have a problem with a productive system and I'm trying to find a solution.
Too many small changes have been made to SDN over the past couple of years when what we should be doing is reviewing it from top to bottom. Lets make it easy to use, make it easy to find relevant content and build upon the community. Take a look at MSDN. I mentioned this before in a number of postings but MSDN is a joy to use.
This is just my opinion but I have the feeling that a lot of developers feel the same way. If you are reading this posting I'd like to hear what you think.
    Thanks for reading
    Rob

    Hi,
I am only partially agree to this, I am visiting SDN now known as SCN( This is also part of improvement) for the last couple of years and I have seen lots of good changes happened to this community network. The information repository in SCN is excellent, The Developers, consultants, Process owners can interact with each other, they can share their experiences in Forum, Blogs and Articles. Can make yourself up to date with the dynamic changes in the Technology.

Again we have Very Experienced and /best consultants are helping and sharing there ideas in Forums , Blogs and Wikis, From my Experience i can say , I learnt 60% of My SAP from SCN, and i am proud to be part of it.

SAP is providing the platform for sharing the ideas, I have seen many of the SAP employees are helpping and providing the links of the documents as and when requested by the User.

  • Permit more than one document type per series

    Hi folks,
Please let me know what is the precise use of :
"permit more than one document type per series"
    Cheers...
    Jitu

    Hi
Certain country regulations permit document numbering series that contain more than one document type.
All of these documents are part of the same numbering series.
Select this option if these regulations are relevant for the company.
This setting determines the settings that are displayed in certain Document Numbering windows,
and cannot be changed after it has been selected.

  • Lost identity

    AArrrggh!!
I changed my name in Finder next to the "Home" (house) icon. by rightclicking on it / "Get info" and then just wrote a new name in the name field, then I continued to work and all was fine. After a reboot OSX came up like it had just been installed. My Apps was still there and so was the files that was on the HD but my files on the desktop was gone and everything seemed to have been reset to the default wallpaper, menubar icons and systemsettings. But the worst thing is that my MS Entourage (Legal copy) acted as if it had just been installed too.. Where are all my mails/projects/adresses? Messenger also wants to start over so does iTunes (Maybe more)
It's as if OSX has lost connection to (or parts of) my identity. It changede the name back to the original name itself. I did a Disc perm repair with no luck either. In Library/preferences I tried to temp. change the MS filenames on the Plist files AND the "Microsoft" folder so that I forced it to create new ones - didn't help either. (have now restored the original MS files)
What's a desperate man to do? I really need my emails..
Really hope someone can help me!
