Part of the Song Was Not Played

I've created a 3-track podcasting episode. I keep getting errors that I have too many tracks, or too many effects, and that I ought to be looking at help on how to optimize my Mac.
I have a Quad G5 and this is laughable. One voice track, one Jingle, and a 20-second effect on the third track. I didn't create any special settings, I took their stock "Podcast" template and deleted tracks (to try and increase performance).
I know this is a bug. My machine isn't being so taxed. I'm running no other programs, have 2 GB RAM, etc. 130 GB free on the drive.
Incidentally, I recorded the 12-minute podcast using Audio Recorder, and imported the AIFF file. Recording directly into GB wouldn't work (same error) after several attempts.
Anyone else see this issue? I upgraded to the latest GB and OS X without this fixing the issue.

I have also come across this problem on numerous occasions.
For instance i have a song, roughly 8 tracks, all GB loops, synths and drums.
It pops up at least once a day, and yes, normally after the MB has just started.
I tried adjusting power and energy setting, but it still did the same. Is it recommended to get an external HD for any music recording - FireWire 800?
Cheers

  • GB3 has problems playing GB2 songs "Part of the song was not played"

I have just bought iLife '06. After everything was installed and set up, I loaded a GarageBand 2 song and pressed play on my iControl. Just seconds into playback, I got the following message:
PART OF THE SONG WAS NOT PLAYED
This song has too many tracks, effects, or notes to be played in real-time.
To optimize perfomance, see the 'Optimizing GarageBand performance' page in GarageBand Help.
Funny, I never had that problem with GarageBand 2! The song always played with no such issues before I updated (except the one I guess we all know, and that's the beat counter (between the transport and master volume slider) doesn't show accurate time and seems to be a little behind and slows down.
After reading other posts, I seem to be a little more lucky than most: my iControl still works (without having to connect it after GarageBand has loaded), I don't have any duplicate file issues, my JamPack 2 is still there but (on the not so lucky side), I do have the snap-to-grid issue.
The song I am trying to play back, anyone can download and try, so here is the url if you want to try it for yourself:
    http://www.nin.com/downloads/index.html
Download 'The Hand That Feeds' and you'll see what I mean (unless you have a far more powerful computer than an iMac G5 17" iSight 1.9GHz with Tiger 10.4.4).

(Ah, it took me some time to understand the concept. And it's great to have pro artists' tracks to listen to and play with.)
I played the song on my office Mac (iMac G5 1.6 GHz), and here's what happened: It played without any problems on the first run, from beginning to end, the cursor always being snow white.
When I went back and tried out several soloed tracks, starting here and there, suddenly I got the "too many tracks" message, and now the song won't play through.
Interestingly, the cursor still stays white. So the computer doesn't show any signs of CPU strain, it just stops playing.

  • Disable 'Part of the song was not played' message permanently

    Hello,
is there a way to remove this kind of stupid and useless message permanently from my computer?
It occurs rather often on my iBook, and it really makes me sick! Every time that happens I will have to press both OK-button AND space-bar to restart the song again.
What's that message good for anyway? Probably no-one in the whole world will be so stupid not to recognise on his or her own that a song has stopped playing! So is the message there to annoy people? Well, it worked in my case...
It happend to me at least 250 times, and I would really love just to solely press the space-bar to continue playing in future times. So if someone could tell me about something that I will have to type into the Terminal or so to stop this ridicolous behavior, I would be really grateful!
    iBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   1GB DDR SDRAM

GarageBand is very processor-hungry, and this happens when it runs out of computing power: the message is to explain that this is why it has happened, as opposed to some other more sinister reason. Even with 1GB of RAM a G4 iBook is sailing pretty close to the wind with GB, particularly if there are a lot of tracks.
It's worth closing any other programs you may have running: the other trick, as you probably know, is to 'lock' any tracks you aren't working on at the moment: this converts them to audio files hidden within GB (without touching the MIDI) and plays the audio files instead of rendering the MIDI - this takes a lot less processing power. (When you lock some tracks and hit play there will be a delay while the tracks are rendered to audio). When you want to edit a track you can just unlock it and revert to the MIDI.

  • "Part of the project was not played" error

I just got a brand new iMac--double the number or processors and twice the RAM as the old one--and I keep getting this error in Garageband:
Part of the project was not played
This project has too many real instrument tracks to be played in real-time.
To optimize performance, see the 'Optimizing GarageBand performance' page in GarageBand Help.
This issue only rarely cropped up on my old machine, and it was usually because the computer was chugging away on too many projects at once.  I am editing a podcast which has two (rather long) audio tracks.
I have quite all other applications.
    I have fixed permissions.
I have tried from another user account.
    I have deleted prefs files.
    I have reinstalled Garageband.
Nothing is helping.  This is very frustrating.
Any guidance you could give me would be EXTREMELY appreciated!
    Thanks!
    Evan

In my case, the culprit was backups and disk-related software eating large amounts of CPU.
I recently ran into this problem with a very small project. Even after locking all tracks, I could not record all the way through the project without getting "project not played".
One pattern I noticed was that I could never get through the whole project when Time Machine was backing up. So I turned off TM and tried again.
Even then, I couldn't get all the way through. Running Activity Monitor, I could see that WD's disk software (came with the My Book drive I use for backup), would periodically consume a big chunk of CPU, even though I wasn't using the WD disk... even if I dismounted the drive. So I uninstalled the WD software.
With this change, Activity Monitor shows ~0% CPU. TM can still give problems, so I shut it down when I record.
Now GB runs fine, even with multiple tracks unlocked.
Moral: use Activity Monitor to make sure something isn't chewing up too much CPU. It may be an intermittent load, which makes it harder to see. But a big burst in non-GB CPU activity can stop GB, even if the burst is brief.

I went to the help but I can't seem to find a problem.   Running gb11 V6.0.5 on a macbook processor 2.2 GHz intel core i7 with mem 8 gb 1333MHz DDR3
I only have two "real instrument" tracks using basic effects....track 1 is acoustic guitar and vocal and track 2 is mandolin.
I must have a setting causing havoc somewhere i guess.....nothing else running on computer.
Any ideas on what i need to do?

I downloaded a song that I purchased from the ITunes store, but the song does not play properly.  How can I re-download the same song without having to purchase it a second time?

I could not find an option to "report a problem".
Log in to the Store. Click on "Account" in your Quick Links. When you're in your Account information screen, go down to Purchase History and click "See all".
Find the item that is not playing properly. If you can't see "Report a Problem" next to the entry, click the "Report a problem" button. Now click the "Report a Problem" link next to the item.
(Not entirely sure what happens after you click that link, but fingers crossed it should be relatively straightforward.)

If your country's iTunes Store allows you to redownload purchased tracks, I'd delete your current copies of the tracks and try redownloading fresh copies. For instructions, see the following document:
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store
Otherwise, I'd report the problem to the iTunes Store.
Log in to the Store. Click on "Account" in your Quick Links. When you're in your Account information screen, go down to Purchase History and click "See all".

  • Itunes not playing songs....getting an error message telling me the song will not play and cant be found

I have had an itunes account for a long time. recently i turned it on to get new songs and realized that alot of my old song are not playing. it shows the file, but when i try to play it tells me file can not be found. please help figure this out. thanks.
    tommy

When you see a "file" in your iTunes library (inside itunes) it is not showing you the file.  Select it in itunes and then get info -  this will show you where  the actual file is on your hard drive under the "where" bullet.  Try this first for a song that is working.  It will show where your library is, and you can then see how your library is organized.
Now try it for a song it can't find.  You will probably get the same error, (can't find the file)  However, then use widows to search your entire computer for the file.  Hopefully by looking at the other songs that ARE there, you'll get a better idea of what exactly to search for.
Finally, when you "add" a song into iTunes, you can be given the option to "Copy" the file into your itunes library (recommended) or just leave a pointer (like a shortcut) to the file.  If you choose this pointer/shortcut option, it can be pretty easy to delte/move the files by accident.  If you move them, the shortcut/pointer will become broken.
