Partial Duplicate iTunes Library onto MacBook Pro for portability?

As many of you, my iTunes library is growing leaps and bounds and as such I've have it on an external 1 TB drive. It is connected to my MacBook Pro while at home and it is the master to which I sync my iPhone and TV.
Now when I want to go portable with my laptop, I lose my iTunes library. I cannot transfer the entire library to the MacBook Pro because it is too large for the laptop's internal drive.
Is there a way to make the MacBook Pro have a secondary library that is a selected portion of your master library like you do with your iPhone or TV?
Surely someone has come across this with the use of laptops and explosive growth of iTunes.
Thanks

you can create a secondary library on your MBP but, personally, i find running multiple libraries cumbersome.
instead, you can have selected content stored on your MBP (while the bulk remains on the external) and still use only one library.
you could use the following script to move your selection from the external to your boot drive:
[_*Re-Locate Selected v1.1*_|http://dougscripts.com/itunes/scripts/ss.php?sp=relocateselected]
This script will re-locate the files of the selected iTunes tracks from their current location to a new user-chosen folder. iTunes will be updated with each track's new location and all of each track's meta-data will be preserved. Option to remove the files from their original location. (I don't advise using this on more than an album's worth of tracks or so at a time; re-locating dozens of tracks' files to a single folder doesn't seem to make much sense to me.)
NOTE: If your "Keep iTunes Media folder organized" preference set, you will not be able to create new folders in or re-locate files within the iTunes Media folder; outside is OK.
or, you can do it manually:
(1) go iTunes > preferences > advanced and temporarily point +*iTunes media folder location+* to your local iTunes folder. on the same tab, ensure +*copy files to ... when adding to library+* is check marked.
(2) select (highlight) the desired content in iTunes, right-click (or ctrl-click) and choose +consolidate files+ from the pop-up menu.
when done you could delete the files you moved from their original location (the external) or just keep them there for backup purposes.
don't forget to point +*iTunes media folder location+* back to the external.
if you insist on a separate library for your MBP, you might want to take a look @ these 3rd party apps:

movies are not from apple store.
the computer has the latest software and it works properly.
it is connected to the same network as the apple tv.
    what should I do?

I am having the same problem since upgrading my desktop workstation to Lion. The AppleTV 2 can see my computer when iTunes is running, but when I navigate to the library the AppleTV 2 tells me that there are no movies (or music or pictures) in the library. I have a mix of videos purchased through the iTunes store, HandBrake conversions, and home videos converted with HandBrake. I can start a movie or other video in iTunes and push it to the AppleTV 2, but I can't parse the library from the AppleTV 2.
The odd thing is: I can see the library on my Mac Pro just fine from my MacBook Pro's iTunes.

  • Can't play songs from iTunes library on MacBook Pro

I can't play anything from my iTunes (10.0) library on my MacBook Pro. When I try to, I get message that song could not be used as original file could not be found, and offer to locate it, and I end up with an exclamation mark against that file. Any ideas how to fix this?
PS Not having any problems syncing to iPhone and playing music from there.

Iphone will sync or manually manage with one and only one computer at a time.
Syncing or manually managing to another will indeed erase the current content and replace with the content from the new computer.

  • How to transfer iTunes library to Macbook Pro

I have been syncing my iTunes library on my phone with an older HP laptop. I have a new MacBook Pro that I would like to transfer my iTunes library to. What is the best way to do that? If I just plug my phone into the new MacBook, will it copy library to computer or will I lose my music?

I am a music director and have several years of iTunes and non-iTunes purchases in my library. I am not very computer savvy and am scared to death of losing all of my music.
I've tried home sharing but Macbook is not showing my pc in the homesharing option. Both computers show homesharing setting is on with the same apple id on both.
I've tried copying my itunes library on PC to a jumpdrive but when i try to import the folder in iTunes on MacBook it says songs aren't there.
I have a 32 GB iphone 4S that has my entire itunes library on it. If I sync everything on it with old PC to make sure everything is on it and then sync it to my new MacBook, will everything be automatically transferred?

  • How do i transfer my itunes library from macbook pro to my imac

how do i copy or transfer my itunes library from my macbook pro to my new imac, i would like to have the library on both computers

assuming all your media files are in the default location, do this:
reboot the MBP into target disk mode
connect MBP and iMac with a firewire cable
drag the entire iTunes folder (not just the iTunes music - or media - folder) from ~/users/yourname/music on the MBP to ~/users/yourname/music on the iMac.
since an iTunes folder will be present there already, you will be prompted to confirm if you want to replace that with the one you're moving. click ok.

  • Transferring iTunes library from MacBook Pro to MacBook Air

I used this site to transfer my iTunes library from my MBP to my MBA: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4527, using an external hard drive to make the transfer.
The songs are now all listed in my iTunes music file on the MBA, but they don't show up when I launch iTunes. Any suggestions?

Just solved the problem. Needed to launch iTunes on the MBA, then went to File, Add to Library, then marked entire list of songs and clicked "Open."

  • Duplicate iTunes library entry

Apple support is awful and unhelpful.  Do I really have to go to an Apple store (miles away and in areas where parking is expensive) just to find a solution?  (Rhetorical question, no need to reply to this.)
I've searched for an solution in support/communities but found nothing for this particular problem.
My iTunes library on MacBook Pro was imported to the MacBook Pro from an older laptop.  I still have the older laptop. I do not listen to music on the older laptop and I do not use it for synching devices.
The new laptop now has duplicate music library entries and I can't tell which is the original and which is the duplicate.
Likewise, I've lost a link to a lot of music when I deleted duplicate entries.  (Apple, this was a stupid design.)   So…anyone got any solutions to help me RID my iTunes library of the duplicates listings WHILE maintaining a link to the original music?  And where do I find the index so I can get my deleted files back?
    Thanks.

This is what you should have done.  You can tell us what you actually did:
If you use iTunes' default preferences settings:  Copy the entire iTunes folder (and in doing so all its subfolders and files) intact to the other drive.  Open iTunes and immediately hold down the option (alt) key (shift on Windows) so you get a prompt to choose a library, then select the copied iTunes folder.
If this is to a new computer and you put the copied iTunes folder in the default location of Macintosh HD > Users > *User Name* > Music  then you don't even need to start with the option key held down, iTunes will automatically look for it there.  (Make sure there isn't anything already in the iTunes folder there that you want to keep since you will be replacing it with the one you are moving.)

    Hi,
As you have match, I suggest that you create a new library by holding ctrl whist launching iTunes. Select create new library. Sign into iTunes Store and activate match. You will now have access to your music and will be able to stream your music.
Options : get a new external drive formatted for mac and either download music from match or copy music from old drive to new one. Alternatively you could reformat old drive and download music from match - I would not be comfortable using this option as it means erasing drive before being able to use with mac.

  • I have created separate user accounts for my 2 boys on my macbook. How do i get my itunes library onto their new ipods?

I have created separate user accounts for my 2 boys on my macbook. How do i get my itunes library onto their new ipods?

They can't.  Which came first - the chicken or the egg?  Actually, that's a bad comparison but a sync must come first.
The library is actually part of iTunes and it contains everything.  iTunes is then configured so that you (or they) determine which portion of everything will be synced to each iPod (identified by a unique name, see below for an example of an iPod and an iPad).  iTunes can't make that decision until AFTER it knows which iPods exist.
By the way, I (you, they) can very easily change the name of each device to whatever I (you, they) wish to call it.

I have the same problem. It is only with tv shows and only with programs I have downloaded after the software update.
Apple support sent me the above link too....but it doesn't solve the problem...my computer is authorized and the content is in my library and will play on my Mac air, but it will not sync the tv shows, it keeps saying my computer isn't authorized for it.
No answers here, but you are definitely not alone with this issue.

  • HT1751 I am trying to backup my iTunes library onto an external hard drive but it won't complete due to 'insufficient privileges for some of the items'. Am I doing something wrong and is there a solution to this problem?

    Hi All,
I am currently trying to backup my iTunes library onto an external hard drive so that I can copy it onto my new Macbook Pro. I have been following the steps posted on the Apple website however each time I get a dialogue box stating:
'The operation cannot be completed because you do not have sufficient privileges for some of the items'.
Is this because I have items that were bought under another persons iTunes account? If so, is there a solution to this problem? Or am I doing something completely wrong?
    Thanks in advance,

    Hi turingtest2,
Thank you for replying.  I've been looking at your posts about setting up iTunes using an external drive.  A bit of background info.  My old computer broke down, so I got a new one from work.  I've always kept my music files on my external drive (I have around 170GB of music).  I didn't follow the suggestions in the "migrate iTunes library" post because my old computer died on me.  However, I've looked at your posts about lay out of the iTunes folders.  Before connecting to iTunes on the new computer, I had reorganized my iTunes folder on my E: external drive, and created an iTunes folder which contains an iTunes Media subfolder.  The music files are in a Music folder, which is in the iTunes Media folder.  I've also put the following files in my iTunes folder: iTunes Library.itl, iTunes Library Extras.itdb, iTunes Library Genius.itdb, iTunes Music Library.xml, as well as sentinel.  I then followed the advice you gave bmw99 on 2 Nov 2013 at 9.58 (sorry, can't copy the exact answer).
Just to clarify:  I'd like to keep all my music media on the E: external hard drive (the computer hard drive is too small), and I'm aware i might never have my playlists back, and that all the songs in my library might be ticked.  However, I don't want my library to be duplicated.
I'm at work at the moment, but will be back home in about 10 hours, so I can be more specific about folders / files names.
I'm glad you picked up my message and greatly appreciate your help.
    Patrice

  • My iTunes library is too large for my iPod classic--can I create a separate library so that I can split the current library and sync the distinct libraries onto separate iPods?

    - If the Gmail accounts are IMAP one then if the library is erased and then you use the account old email will be redownload
    - Easing the library on the MacBook does not effect what is on the iMac. On the other hand if you deleted the messages in the Mail app on the MacBook then they will deleted from all devices.
