Partial indexing of file names

There are a great many files (actually file names) that Spotlight cannot find. (Easy Find can find them.) If I open these files and then close them, Spotlight indexes them and can subsequently find them.
Is there a way to re-index my HD?

I have been trying to pinpoint problems on my G5 (dual processor with 2 GB RAM) that began when Software Update installed OS X 10.4.3. The problem has had the following symptoms:
a. When I click on a file in the finder of any type in order to select it, Finder will BEACHBALL for several minutes but will ultimately return so that I can select the file and perform the desired actions. Examples include all movies, music files, NoteTaker files, and applications such as Final Cut Pro, DVD Studio Pro, and, often, iMovie HD. It has also happened on Word files.
I ran Activity Monitor all day yesterday and noticed that Finder (or sometimes the Application that is using a file import routine that I believe to be related to Finder, such as iPhoto or iMovie), will NOT RESPOND (appear in Red) for several minutes, mds will always be at about 99-100%, and, suddenly the Not Responding application will find its soul and start responding. Frustrating!
b. The same thing happens every time I try to import into iPhoto or iTunes.
c. I noted that Spotlight NEVER returns results.
d. I ultimately re-installed the OS X with the option to restore my network and user settings. Nothing changed.
Yesterday I reinstalled again with the option that wipes the drive clean. Nothing changed. In both cases I updated to 10.4.3 via Software Update.
e. I tried to force Spotlight index updating via the GUI method, but, when I click the ADD button and select a file to ADD via Privacy tab, nothing happens. The file is not added to the list. So I just ran the Terminal method, described by Dr. Smoke, below.
I received the following message each time I ran this command: "Error, no index found for volume".
It appears to me that there is common problem underlying these symptoms in that FInder and Spotlight seem to thrash whenever they have to perform a search or import function. I am totally at a loss on this. I have a brand new PB 15 and a PB 17 both running 10.4.3 as well as four other iMac G4's, and known of them have this problem. HELP!
Hi, J.
Two approaches to reindexing your startup disk:
1. The GUI way: see "Spotlight: How to re-index files and
folders."
2. The Terminal way:2.1. In terminal,
type the following command exactly as
written:
sudo mdutil -E /
then press Return.
2.2. Type your Admin password when prompted, then
press Return.
2.3. You'll receive a confirmation message that the
index will be rebuilt automatically. Indexing will
begin shortly thereafter.I prefer the
Terminal approach over the GUI (Privacy) approach as
there are some anomalies assocaited with using
Privacy. You can run into anomalies in Tiger if you
combine Privacy with mdutil. For details,
see my "Stop Spotlight Indexing" FAQ.
Good luck!

  • TREX indexing encrypted files

    Hello,
In the context of an upgrade of e-recruiting (from 3.0 to 6.0) we installed a new Trex (release 7.10).
I recreated all indexes and I have problems with two files.
This files are uploaded by applicant and they are encrypted.
I have errors into the preprocessing because this files are encrypted.
In this moment I have two questions :
    a) How can I index this two files ?
    b) How can I decide into my ABAP server (e-recruiting) that I don't want to index this files ?
    Thanks for your help
    Dominique

    Hi Paulo,
TREX indexes the file name and the content of the file for all files, including Excel files. I have come across several different issues with TREX not being able to index certain Excel files due to filter bugs. Check TREX 7.10 central Note 1021162 for a listing of the different revs.
Are you having issues trying to index a file? If so, what error are you getting?
    Thanks!

  • How do i change the HTML file names for existing index

    Hi,
How do i change my existing HTML file names for indexes. The Html file name is disabled when we click on properties.
    Ex:   Index Keywork : Architecture
            Old HTML Page/URL =: Architecture.htm
    I want to change  Old HTML Page/URL =: Architecture.htm to architecture_new.htm
    Please find the screenshot attached.

That's because you are looking at the Properties and that is not how you create index entries.
Highlight the Index keyword ("Paste" in this example). It shows below what is already linked. If you delete that, the keyword will be displayed in bold to show no keyword is attached. You can add further keywords by dragging them from the Topic List.

  • TREX indexes only by file name

    Hi people!
During few days I've been looking into the SDN to find a way to enable the TREX search and classification but only by file names, not by content too. When I launch a search, it returns to me both cases, matches with filename and matches with content of the text file.
Any idea how must be TREX or the index configured to only search by filename?
    Thanks!

    Hello oo:
    Welcome to Apple discussions.
It would be a complete guess to postulate what happened.
I think I would do a couple of things:
    Run permission repair
Run repair disk from your software install DVD.
    Reindex the HD:

  • File name filtering / partial cloaking

I've been using the files section to maintain sites uploading
on FTP and am used to it. I block some local folders from being
    uploaded by cloaking them.
Here's my issue : Some script is creating files in a
directory that contains files I need to access so I can't cloak it.
The file names don't have an extension and have an ID (#) in it so
    it's not always the same.
Is there some sort of filtering which I could apply to some
folders, something like partial cloaking and/or partial allow which
could use regex (regular expression) like DW cool find tool ?

Would it be a monster job to move the files needing access to
    a non-cloaked
folder and let DW adjust the paths?

  • Should my file name be index?

Does my main page file name need to be index?  Or can I name it something relevant to the page topic in hopes of being found more easily by search engines?
    Stacy

The home page, that is the page you want people to see when they type in your domain name eg:  www.example.com does need to be named index.html  (or default.html or whatever your host suggests it should be)...  otherwise, people will have to type in the full path to the page if you use something else.  eg:  www.example.com/mainpage.html
All pages linking from the index page can be named anything you like, eg :  aboutus.html;  services.html  etc,

  • Can I partially change appearance on a file name?

I´m working with a big company that has quite a few articles that I´m making individual originals for. Since the customer always refers to the products by name, I need to start the file names with the description. At the end of the file name I add the serial number for my business system.
When i browse the windows the article numbers is hard to see because the file names are individual in lenght, and is not in a numerical sequence (alphabetical sorting) Is there any way to colorize or make just the numbers bold in the file name? Or does anyone have another idea of what to do?

Finder uses a volume's  Spotlight index for its searches, and Spotlight won't create such an index on a Windows server. EasyFind is slower, but I think it still works remotely.
I tried creating a local file named "testfile98765.txt", and then searched in EasyFind for *98765* after choosing "Unix-Wildcards" as the search operator (an asterisk matches anything). EasyFind found the file, which I could then either double-click to open directly from EasyFind, or else use ctrl-click>Reveal in Finder.

  • Spotlight isn't indexing file names (or all files?)

Recently upgraded to a MBP Retina.  One of the really annoying things I have come across is that Spotlight doesn't seem to be indexing file names.  Even if I do a search like "name:chart" in a folder that has a file named "chart.pdf" it won't show up.
Is there a way to force iOSX Vista SP1 (aka Mountain Lion) to actually index things?
This is happening for files that are spread across multiple folders.  I have already run fix permissions and checked with "Get Info" that the folders/files I'm trying to search for are set to read/write by me.

    From the menu bar, select
     ▹ System Preferences ▹ Spotlight ▹ Privacy
The list of items excluded from Spotlight indexing is shown (it may be empty.) Click the plus (“+”) icon to add an item to the list. Select your volume (under DEVICES) and add it to the list. Then remove it from the list by selecting it and clicking the minus (“-“) icon.
Spotlight will rebuild the index. If you try to do a Spotlight search now from the magnifying-glass icon in the top right corner of the display, a pulsing dot will appear in the icon. When the dot disappears, the indexing is complete.

  • "Document name invalid.  The index.xml file is missing"

I have OSX Yosemite 10.10 and am having a problem just today in Numbers.  A file that I have saved to my desktop and opened daily to input data since the first of November won't open.  It gives me a message that the file is invalid, the "index.xml file is missing"   Running Numbers '09 version 2.3   Have been run ing Yosemite 10.10 for quite some time.  How can I open/retrieve the file?

I am having the same problem.  I am also running Yosemite 10.10.  The last I accessed the file was on November 13, 2014. I have been noticing that the layout /view of the file with the program has been a little different for about a week before then.  I have not upgraded to the newer version although it is constantly asking to upgrade. Still running Number '09, Version 2.3. I am very concerned as the file I am accessing contains critical records that go back for several years. I am not having problems opening .numbers files that are a couple of years old. Thanks for any help.

An original Numbers ’09 v2.3 document will save as a compressed zip archive that has its extension renamed .numbers. It contains an index.xml file. If you double-click this Numbers ’09 document, it will open in Numbers ’09 v2.3. This is contrary to how Pages v5.5.1 handles Pages ’09 documents.
You have to explicitly open a Numbers ’09 v2.3 document in Numbers v3.5. When you make a change, Numbers v3.5 will drop a sheet dialog that is very clear in its portent:
Would you like to upgrade this Numbers '09 spreadsheet?
    Edit a Copy
    Cancel
    Upgrade
When you choose either the Edit a Copy, or Upgrade — and save your changes, the resulting document is now in the new document architecture whose structure no longer uses the index.xml file. Double-clicking this new document format will now default to Numbers v3.5 on open, not Numbers '09 v2.3. You have to explicitly choose Open with Numbers (2.3) from the contextual menu to get the pop-op below because Pages v5.5.1, Numbers v3.5, and Keynote 6.5 documents are not backwards compatible.

  • Search using partial file name?

I know this issue has been addressed before, but I haven't found a satisfactory answer.
I use the Search field in the toolbar to search for files on my external drive. That external drive contains a file named "housefly.psd." When I search for "house" using the File Name filter and with columns set to Kind, all the Photoshop files that begin with "house" appear at the top of the window, including the file I'm searching for.
But if I search for "fly," the "housefly.psd" file doesn't appear in the list at all, although files containing the word "fly" with a space before the word show up in the list (e.g. - "big fly.psd").
Users aren't always going to remember the initial characters in a file name they want to find. So how do I find the file if I only remember some of the internal characters?
    Thanks,
    Andy

Yeah, isn't Spotlight great?! Give this example to all the experts who gush about Spotlight.
What you see is how Spotlight was designed to work -- at least for hoi polloi like us. The query looks for words, not strings. "Fly" is one word, "big fly" is two words, but "housefly" is one word. It contains the string "fly", but not the word "fly". Now, if you had had the foresight and forethought to name your file "HouseFly", then probably Spotlight would have found it, "Fly", unlike "fly" being, by the rules of the Apple wallahs, a word, not a string. Is that all? No, of course not, that would have been too simple. Spotlight also has hidden somewhere a private list of exceptions. So "books" in "Audiobooks" is always a word, no matter how capitalised; but in "Cookbooks" it's just a mere string, and hence not worthy of notice.
How do you get around this (without using Terminal)?
    (1) One way is to construct a query, as already suggested, with the Filename and Contains. But, beware! if you're searching in Finder, and you've already entered a string in the Spotlight search field on the toolbar, the query constructed thus will be restricted to the hits of the query already in the search field. So, if you've enter "fly" in the window toolbar search field, and then construct a Filename Contains "fly" query, you'll find nothing, because any subset of the ∅ (empty set) is also empty. This restriction applies to any query thus constructed.
    (2) If you are a real, hair-chested, red-blooded Mac user, you don't use namby-pamby Filename queries. You go straight for the jugular. In the pop-up menu, instead of "Filename", choose "Other...". Then scroll through the interminable list to "Raw Query" and enable it. Then type in the Raw Query search box
    kMDItemFSName == *fly*
Note 1: "*fly*", not "*fly", because the Item's File System Name is "housefly.psd".
Note 2: You can use the keyword "name" in the window toolbar Spotlight search field, thus
    name:housefly
However, this one doesn't take wildcards.
    (3) If you happen to be just a normal person, who uses a computer to be productive and not to exercise one's fingers by typing lengthy and abstruse keywords (or as a Rorschach test to have fun divining the inscrutable minds of Apple engineers), then my suggestion is to give Spotlight the widest possible berth and use something else. I suggest Find File by John R Chang, Find Any File by Thomas Tempelmann, and EasyFind by Christian Grünenberg.

  • Can file name get from partial field value ?

    Hi, Friend:
I have file receiver with FCC, I used variable substitution (I have to use this rather than dynamic configuration, since there are multiple files created by multi-mapping), so the file name is pass via payload to adapter.
In advanced tab, we can assigned to a variable like: payload:MT_XXXX,1,Filename,1
Now I do not want full value of Filename, I just need part of the value of it.
I will not consider an option of create another field to store part of the value, since after FCC, a blank line is created which is not acceptable by our integration partner.
Is there any way to get it ?
    Thanks
    Liang

    Kevin:
If you can see from what Madhusudana Reddy suggested:
I created a node, saying "Tail" in end of structure, add one child node to it saying "Filename"
Now in my mapping program, I can pass real file name I wanted to child node "Filename"
In Variable substitution, I get the whole value of the node "Filename" when we naming the created file.
In FCC, I used Madhusudana suggested, it would not created blank line when using  Tail.endSeparator '0'
Hope this give you some hints
    @Carlos:
Java Mapping is different approach which we do not want to go at this stage.

  • How to Use FULL TEXT Indexing Search on file names with brackets

I would like to use a FULL Text Seach query to find Files on a windows file system
The Problem is when the case comes up where there is a parentheses"()" in the file name. This example was created from a file copy being pasted in the same folder location as the original a few times.
    Here is my code:
    DECLARE
    @SearchWord VARCHAR(50)
    SET @SearchWord = '"KAP1556PP_P01(2).jpg"'
SELECT [FileName], [FilePath] FROM [dbo].[tblLegalPlan] WHERE CONTAINS(*, @SearchWord)
When I use Double quotes for the @Searchword I recieve no results.
    SET
    @SearchWord = '"KAP1556PP_P01(2).jpg"'
When I remove the Double  Quotes for the @Searchword I recieve an error message:
    SET
    @SearchWord = 'KAP1556PP_P01(2).jpg'
    Msg 7630, Level 15, State 2, Line 8
Syntax error near '(' in the full-text search condition 'KAP1556PP_P01(2).jpg'.
When I search for files containing TEXT up to the bracket i Get undesrired results obviously:
    SET
    @SearchWord = '"KAP1556PP_P01*"'
    Results
    FileName FilePath
    KAP1556PP_P01(1).jpg BC\EPP\KAP
    KAP1556PP_P01(2).jpg BC\EPP\KAP
I would like results where I can search for the file name and only one file is found matching the search word.
    Thanks

  • Can't search contents of files only file names.

I am really stuck guys. It's been aggrevating me for days. I tried to download 3rd party programs for searching in files and it still doesn't work. I checked the forums here and people only have trouble searching for kinds of files. Even when I use search strings like "contents" or "description" it still will only look for file names not contents.
It's frustrating because I am typing up my own personal book and I am in the process of fixing all the mistakes which requires searching by contents in my folder where my files are stored!
    Thanks in advance!

    I've tried various file types.
I tried adding my HD to the list and literally waited 1 minuted but to no avail.
The next step is probably reinstalling Snow Leopard, right?
By the way, I mostly use Finder for searching, so how would I enable the indexing there? Or is it only spotlight that has this indexing thing?
