Partial restore of TurboTax return in Win bootcamp, Time Machine or win?
I hope this is an appropriate place to post this. Running Win7 64 bit in Bootcamp & as VM in Parallels 5. Did taxes last yr in TurboTax Win (transferred from old Dell where started) Due to many crashes ended up having to erase machine. Had Time Machine running while in Parallels & also tried Windows backup but got errors so it only did mirror backup before erase.
I retrieved some files from Time Machine Backup, but don't know where to get data & whether Time Machine would back up Parallels content if it was running during back up or not.
Way behind on taxes because of almost 2 mo now of crash problems leading up to the erases. Would like to import last year's data into this year's return so I don't have to do all the data entry all over, but don't know how to find it.
Genius bar told me to only restore user data so just pulling files as needed & besides Parallels only have iLife & iWork on Mac side. Read a post on Amazon about someone running in a VM that TurboTax didn't support that so don't expect help from them. Any help in how to retrieve lat yrs return from backup would be appreciated.
OK, here's an update & updated question. I located the file & tried to open it from the Windows side but it started trying to open it but it couldn't. It gave a 146 (I think that is the #) since it couldn't recognize it as a tax file.
Hopefully trying to open it didn't damage it. I'm guessing the problem is its on an HFS+ drive. So thinking I could try going in & dragging it to either the bootcamp drive or the NTFS back up drive since it was a Windows file.
I only partly understand how all this works. Any comments or suggestions welcome. Guess I should have tried to TurboTax site before but part of the issue is knowing what search term to use.
OK, I was able to drag it to my C bootcamp drive & open it. But when I try to save it I'm getting an error that it is read only. a 113 error. it says to save as which I tried w same result.
So, any suggestions as to how I can save it so its in my reinstalled TT 09 would be great. Or maybe I could do that save as pdf which can be imported to TT2010.
Again, any suggestions welcome. I'm getting into areas I don't understand very well here. Thanks for any help!

Yes. Partition and format the new drive, then install Mountain Lion from scratch. When finished you can restore what you want, manually, from your Time Machine backup.
Install or Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion from Scratch
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Erase the hard drive:
1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
2. After DU loads select your startup volume (usually Macintosh HD) from the
left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
3. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Optionally, click on
the Security button and set the Zero Data option to one-pass. Click on
the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.
4. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Install button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless. -
I just had to reformat the external hard drive that houses my iPhoto library, then restore it from a backup. Now Time Machine is telling me my backup hard drive suddenly does not have the space to complete a backup. I also noticed when I go in to Time Machine, there are only about 5 backups recorded on the ext. hard drive. There were many more before. Any idea what happened and if I have to buy a new back up hard drive?

I am not quite ready to restore the full iphoto library , as I have days of work re - imputting titles,descriptions and enhancement . I hope that your suggestion works , as I use my Macbook basically to work with digital photography. Through time , I will need to delete my library to recover more disc space and I would hate to have to spend more time re - imputting titles and descriptions all over again .

Time Machine only shows the current copy of the file I am trying to restore. There is none of the time machine backup histories shown. I am running OSX 10.7.5. I see the backup files on my external Time Machine hard drive in the Backups.backupdb folder.
Time Machine does show the history of my Macintosh HD, but when I try to navigate to the folder I wish to restore the backup history disappears. any suggestions?Did you try browsing your backups in the Finder ? That is, do not go and "Enter Time Machine". Instead, navigate to your Time Machine backup via Finder and then manually go to the time period (by folder name) you are looking for ... when you find your Aperture library you can then "Show Package Contents" and find the Master you are looking for.

Hi - I'm trying to restore my apps and data from my time machine onto a new hard drive, which was just replaced by Apple. I'm using a WD elements hard drive as a time machine and the new hard drive only sees it as an external hard drive - it asks whether I want to use it as a time machine, so if I select this will it keep all my old back ups from the previous hard drive?
When I went through the set up assistant it didn't pick up the external hard drive - it is definitely plugged in, on and on the same network! I'm now trying migration assistant which closes down all apps, and so it can't pick up the drive either - any ideas?

You can't do that when you are bootiing to the real OS. It has to be done from the recovery hd. -
How do I restore a failed external hard drive using Time Machine?
I have an external hard drive connected to my iMac that is being backed up with Time Machine. I just realized that should it one day fail and no longer appear as a connected device, I'm not sure how to restore its data to another external drive. When I disconnected the external hard drive (to mimic a drive crash) and entered Time Machine to see if I could verify that the external hard drive was, in fact, being backed up - I didn't know where to find it. Under the Today (Now) information, I didn't expect to see it there as it was no longer connected to the machine. But when I went back a few days, I expected to see its backup appear in the Sidebar. But no!
So - how do I restore a failed external hard drive using Time Machine?
Searches for this information on Google yielded "iffy" results. I'm hoping someone here is able to offer some clear steps to follow. Perhaps I'm missing something silly. Thank you very much!I came across this discussion after encountering the same problem. Since my internal HD was cose to full I added an additional external HD to my setup. I moved my iPhoto files to an external HD and backed both this external HD and my internal HD up with Time Machine to another external HD. So far the theory. When I wanted to test if this setup worked I noticed that I could only see my iPhoto libraries on the external HD in Time Machine when the external HD was connected to my computer, but not if I turned it off. This led me to search for a solution on the Apple Support Communities discussion board.
The suggestions made Kappy seem right, at least in my experience, in that my Time Machine simply did not back up the external HD until I followed the steps he suggested above. These were the following:
"So, if you want it backed up then here's what you need to do:
1. In Time Machine preferences remove the external drive from the Exclude list.
2. Verify that it is now included with your other drive in the backup list.
3. Do a Backup Now to create a new backup of the external drive."
After doing this, my external HD showed up in the Backups.backupd as a seperate folder. I could clearly see the Time Machine back-up for my internal HD and my external HD. In addition, in Time Machine itself I was able to find the external harddrive by clicking on my own computers name under "Devices". I hope my experience helps to resolve your issue as this discussion board has helped me resolve mine (which I believe to be very similar).

I was able to use VI server to invoke LV 6.1 VI's using LV 7.0 without issue.
After discovering this and mentioning it in a post somewhere, Rolf Kalbermatter indicated that was expected. and I should not be suprised.

To the best of knowledge NO.
For each versino of LV there isw code included that runs behind the scenes when you open a VI from an earleir version which replaces old functions with the new versions. This is called Mutation code. To accomplish its task it has to know everything that changed between version X and Y. Since it is possible to baby step the versions up and the number of user that jump multiple major versions is small, I don't think any effort will go into that work.
THe largest attachment I have managed to upload was 3 or 4 Meg.

Ok, well go and grab a small 2.5" hard drive enclosure so you can put the new drive in & temporarily use it like an external hard drive.
Download Carbon Copy Cloner or Super Duper and make a bootable clone of your current HDD on the new HDD.
Once that's done you can test the clone by booting from it. To do this hold Optioni while booting to select the external (new) drive. If everything looks ok, you can go ahead and swap over the HDD's.
So much easier. -

Can you restore an individual iphoto event from a time machine backup or do you have to restore an entire library?
Whilst deleting some old photos from my library i seem to have accidentally deleted an entire event of photos. I regularly backup my iMac using TIme Machine, so was hoping that i could restore this one event. Is this possible and if so how do you do it?

You can restore events from TimeMachine if you like. Read here.
Rather than clicking on individual pictures, you click on "Events", highlight the events you want, and then click restore.

My reason for doing this is to import data from Quicken 2007 to Quicken Essentials and then upgrade back to Lion. Can I restart and hold down the "OPTION" key upon start up that will take me to Apple Recovery HD and recover from time machine? I'm a noob at these sort of things.
