Partially locked layer

I am using CS4. I have a partially locked layer. It is not the background layer. I partially locked it myself but forgot how I did it. How do I unlock it?

  • Unlocking a "Partially Locked Layer" in Ps CS3

I am working on a poster for a school project and I have come across something that I have never encountered before in the 4 years of photoshopping I have done. Its a "Partially locked layer". The layer is a text layer and the "lock" button in the layers pallet is off. I have been searching around for how to unlock this layer I have only found these on the "backround" layer not text layers and i cannot figure out ( nor can my teacher(s)) how to unlock it. I need to just transform and edit the text in this layer but am unable to due to the partial locking of the layer.
Any ideas on how to unlock?
    What I have tried:
    restarting Ps CS3
    Lock Button
    Copying the text layer
saving as another name and re-opening
    Differnt Computer
    Thanks,
    Matt

Are either of the 2 icons in red down? If so click on them so they are not depressed.
If you accidentally used New>> background from layer (your layer would look like the screenshot above). In taht case thje text has been bitmapped, adn even releasing would release this bitmapped.
If this does not solve your problem, can you post a screenshot of your layers palette?

  • Unlocking a "partially locked" layer

I have a little "lock" icon in the right side of the layer, next to the fx. Rolling over it tells me the layer is "partially locked". How do I unlock this?

    Hi,
None of the proposed ways works for me.
The little lock icons do not repond and the word Lock: is grayed.
Could it be because it is a .pdf document?
Doesn't work after I Save As .jpg either.
Nor if I first save it as .psd.

  • Partially locked layer, but no icon highlighted under 'lock'

I have not previoulsy experienced this problem. It just started.
    1. I try to use any auto correction such as tone, and nothing appears to change
    2. I see the small layers 'background' icon flashing as I do this into the black and white check pattern
    3. It seems that the layer background is partially locked- (when I scroll my mouse over the 'lock' icon this is written)
Yet there is no icon above in 'lock' that is highlighted. So I cannot unlock it.
I am able to adjust in all other methods which are not auto corrections.
Perhaps I changed some settings accidentally?

Yes a background layer can not be unlocked for a background layer does not support transparency.  So unlocking its transparency is invalid not an available option.  You must convert the layer to a normal layer that supports transparency. If you want to transform its size, mask it, change its opacity etc..

  • Animated gif from .ICO files - Indicates layer is partially locked

thanks for helping the non-graphics newb out...
trying to create my first animated gif. I have 8 .ico files that i converted to .png to open them. once all are open i try to combine into one file with 8 layers but am unable to do it!?!? If I click on the main layer in any file it shows as locked and says "Indicates layer is partially locked"

in any file it shows as locked and says "Indicates layer is partially locked"
That is normal. Just open the file you want to use as the base/background layer. Now open the file that will be the first layer up from that, press ctrl+a (cmd+a on a mac) to select all of it, then ctrl+c (cmd+c) to copy it. Switch back to the background layer, click in it, then press ctrl+v (cmd+v) to paste it and use the move tool to position it. Repeat for each layer. Note that layers in an animated gif do not play in front of hte base layer the way cartoon cels do, so that you see action in front of a backdrop. You must include everything you want to see at once in each layer.

  • Layer is Partially Locked question?

    I'm using Windows 7 64 bit but I use Photoshop CS5 32 bit.
In my Layers Panel every file that I open up has that little icon (Indicates Layer is partially Locked).
A lot of my functions are grayed out because of this condition. If I duplicate the Layer or put a selection around a layer or make a new layer (Layer 0) all previous grayed out functions now work.
I uninstalled and reinstall PS CS 5 but still had the same problem. Is there something I can do about this condition?
                    Thank you

I'm not sure if this is your problem, but every time an image is opened for the first time in Photoshop, there is one layer called Background.  This layer is automatically locked.  You can convert the Background layer into a normal (unlocked) layer by double-clicking on the word Background. You are prompted to give the layer another name (default is Layer 0).

  • Elements 12 -background layer only partially locked

i recently purchased elements 12.  When using layers, I noticed the background layer was only partially locked and not fully locked as I was assuming it should be.  I couldn't find anywhere that I could change this.  Any suggestions.

Just forget it. The background layer is as the background layer has always been, only adobe decided to confuse things by changing the way it's worded in the past couple of versions. Actually, it's more correct  now--background layers have never been completely locked--you could always do many kinds of edits on them.

  • "Partially Locked" background layer = HELP please :)

Hi there.  I am new to photoshop and still learning daily but am having tons of fun editing & playing   I have PSE11
I have been editing the same group of pictures for the last few nights and just recently every picture that I bring over from the Organizer has the background layer being "partially locked".
I have googled it, watched help videos and still can't seem to fix the issue.  I doubled clicked and renamed and still nothing.  With that first layer being "partially locked" I can't seem to do much with the rest of the layers.
Is there possibly something that I may have hit by mistake?  An easy fix?  Feeling frusterated and hoping to find help......
    Thanks so much

All background layers always are partially locked. It shouldn't prevent you from doing anything ohter than creating transparent areas. Other editing shouldn't be impeded at all. Double-clicking the layer in the layers panel should bring up a window asking if you want to convert it to a regular layer.

  • Photoshop lock layer; how to unlock?

one layer in a photoshop document has a padlock on it; no clue how it got there. I can't make it go away; perhaps the method is different in CS6 than in previous versions...
Any clue about this? I can't fill a selection on this particular layer...don't  know why. The layer in question IS selected, and the selection is active, etc.
    w

Admittedly the transparent lock is rarely seen, but notice your little brush icon is now active.  You've partially locked the layer (specifically, you've locked the image pixels).  Just click that brush icon and you should be in business.
See this page for what the various lock icons do.

  • Remove Partial Lock

Background got partially locked; how do I remove the lock?

The background is always partially locked. It doesn't prevent you from doing most things but if you need to  unlock it, double click the background layer in the layers panel to turn it into a regular layer.

  • Hi. I cant open my itunes?? comes up with locked layer or disc?? help !!

Hi I cant open my itunes?? it comes up with locked layer or disc ?? Help please !!

Sorry: once a device has been authorised for a particular iTunes account you can't change it to another until 90 days have passed. This is to prevent people cirumventing the restrictions of purchases to one account from consteantly swopping between accounts. You will have to wait for the 82 remaining days, and there is no workaround.

  • Password Protected Locked Layer?

As a photographer, we are very protective of our creations. I have an image that I took for a client, that needs some Photoshop clean-up work, that will probably take me 15~30 minutes to complete, and I plan on billing my client for my labor. However, when I mentioned this work to my client, they told me that they can't afford my price (which isn't that much), and that they'd like to have a family member who is a "Photoshop expert" do the work, instead of me, and then give me the image, so that I can send it to my lab for printing. I can't imagine having the image out of my control, where it could be printed by them, posted to Facebook or shared with others, so this option really doesn't sit very well with me!
I like to do what I can to make my clients happy, but may not be able to in this instance. However, what I was thinking, although I believe that I already know the answer, is adding a password protected, locked layer with my low opacity watermark over the image. Unfortunately, I can't think of anyway to achieve this password protecting of a layer. Sure I can lock a layer, but it can be turned off at will.
Can any one out there think of any other options or solutions, that will allow me to give my image to a client, and ensure that my watermark/copyright remain visible on the image during the entire time that they're editing it?

We can only make conclusions based on what little you have described. GIGO.
We're only left to addressing the foolishness of the shoot as there is nothing that can further be said about a ridiculous hope of software. Do we recognize the silliness in supposing that you could supply a file that is both editable and not editable?
Adobe already offers some security options in PDF files (preventing copying, printing, editing, opening, etc), which are easily defeated. Hold your breath to wait for this stunningly ineffective technology to make it to other Adobe apps.
As this is such an issue for you, it may be time to reevaluate the business model of prints as a significant portion of your service.  Home computers and Walmart's in-store photo printer have replaced most of your service, even if you forced the client to sign a piece of paper vowing not to duplicate.  Photographers really need to focus on and charge appropriately for the craft of photography (like employing guards on windy, rainy days) and not try to be intellectual property managers for an end product that they really cannot control anymore.
You can enter feature requests here and then wait a year or so for the release cycle. How soon does your client need prints?

  • Hidden / Locked Layer Drop Object Keeps Selection (BUG)

For the past several versions of Illustrator (from CS5 through CC) this has been a HUGE problem:
Whenever I turn off the visibility of a layer (and/or lock it), and I drag a selected object from a visible and editable layer and drop it into/onto the locked &/ hidden layer, the dropped selected object remains selected although I can no longer see or edit it.  The bounding box remains obscuring my work flow and prevents various boolean operations to be done on newly selected objects on editable/visible layers.
Whenever a selected object is dropped onto a locked &/ hidden layer that selection MUST ALSO BE DROPPED.  Before CS5, to my recollection, this was the case and worked as expected.  But from CS5 onward, this logical and intuitive workflow fails.  So what I am forced to do is I have to changed the layer back to visible and editable, click somewhere off of any object to deselect, then return the layer to a locked &/ hidden state.  Now when I am working with hundreds, if not thousands, of objects that I have to sort and process using layers to manage them, this having to toggle ON, deselect, then toggle OFF to get back to work is hellish at best.
No object on a hidden or locked layer should ever maintain its selection state --- EVER --- no matter how that object got onto that layer.  Any selection is worthless if it cannot be seen.  Any selection is worthless if it is locked.  Therefore, drop the selection state when a selection was dropped onto a locked &/ hidden layer.
This has to change.  This issue alone accounts for adding  over 20% to my cost in hours spent on complex projects where thousands of objects need to be managed.  Such complex projects account for 75% of my workload.  So this issue costs me dearly.
STATS:  Illustrator CC on iMac Mountain Lion w 8GB RAM.

No.  They were both top-level layers during my latest attempt that finally worked.  In response to your post just now, I tried doing it with sublayers.  And with sublayers the problem re-emerged. I necessarily have multiple levels of sublayers to manage my assets, so I guess that's why it has failed for so long, but my earlier test (sans sublayers) worked.  So it must be the sublayers that cause the issue.
When the problem happens boolean operations just fail to do anything, and trying to move an existing editable-layer object with a non-released object causes an outright crash.
So this is definitely a bug that needs fixing.

  • Locked Layer in Photoshop CS4

    Hello,
I have a layer in photoshop that refuses to unlock. Doesn't matter how many times I click on the lock, it just keeps telling me it can't edit the layer because it's locked.
The file is in RGB and I just don't get it. So frustrating =[[

I've seen this before under certain circumstances.  You can group layers together and select "Lock all layers in Group"  from the flyout menu at the top right of the layers panel.  At this stage, you can unlock the layers in the group through the same command.
The odd thing is that while the layers in the group are still locked (via the "Lock all layers in Group" command), you can ungroup the layers, and the individual layers remain locked.  I never bothered to look for a way to unlock the layers which were locked in this fashion because in my case it was easier to just create a new layer and copy the contents of the locked layer into it.
