Particle Emitters - Rotate Particles on X-Axis...?

Right now, the Fall Leaves particle emitter in Motion 4 causes a series of leaves to fall facing the camera.
I'm wanting each leaf to flip individually on their X-Axis, making them fall more like actual leaves.
How do I do this?
I've just adjusted the particle emitter to be 3D *as well as checked off the Face Camera option in the Emitter pane, and still have not seen a way to make this done.
I can adjust the axis in the Fall Leaves Sequence the emitter was made from, but it flips each leaf the same way.
Can this effect be done?

Here's what I'd do as a possible solution. Duplicate the image sequence several times (4-5) and add them to your emitter. Lower the birth for all of them until combined you have about the same number as before with one.
Then apply the randomize behavior to the X rotation of each of the duplicate image sequences. Give them low frequency and noise settings, but make each behavior slightly different. Also set the start X rotation for each duplicate to a different point.
Now you'll have about 4-5 random changes in X rotation. This should help trick the eye into seeing more naturally occurring leaves.

    You've hit one of the limitation of 3D particle systems in Motion (I'm assuming you made the system 3D)? You can only rotate individual cells around their z-axes.
    However, with a 3D replicator, you can rotate cells on x, y, and z - so give that a shot. Just remember to make it 3D.

  • Particle Emitters as well as other presets are EMPTY!

    I have already went to preferences and chose the correct folder for Motion to access my particle emitters. under my HD partition there's a Final Cut Studio Folder, A Motion Folder and a Library folder which has all these presets. However Motion's Library tab/menu FAILS to read them. I have to search for the on the spotlight which is a real pain and not very practical.
    Can someone please tell me what I'm missing? Thank you!

    Hm? Is this the recent issue with project presets missing? I didn't know that the particle emitters might go missing to.

  • Missing Images for Particle Emitters

    A few weeks ago I moved my Motion Library to my external hardrive to clear up some space. Recently I started a new Motion project and when I opened it obviously all of the Library was was missing because it was now on my external drive.
    When I moved the Library back into the Library>Application Support>Motion>Library folder everything began to work again fine, except that the particle emitters that use images from the "content" folder.
    The content folder within motion is populated so it recognizes the folder, and its contents can be used. Its just when using a particle emitter that I get the "failed to import" error and it specifies the images from the content folder.

    I finally solved the problem yesterday, and now that I've fixed it I thought I should post the fix.
    Basically the problem is that Motion apparently can't be installed on a case sensitive file system at this point. I'll put more detailed information below.
    Because I'm new to Macs, I wasn't expecting some of the extensions to be hidden, including the .localized part of the path, so it wasn't until I used Get Info on the specific images that I saw the actual full path and file names.
    Finally I realized that the only real difference between the actual files and what Motion was looking for was the case of the file names, and then I remembered that my external hard drive was formatted with a case sensitive file system (Mac OS Extended (Case-sensitive, Journaled) to be precise).
    Now that I've backed the partition up, formatted it and restored the contents, everything appears to be working fine. I hope this saves time for anyone else who runs into this problem in the future, and I hope that something about this is added to the main Motion support section.

  • Particle emitters have disapeared from library folder.

    I opened motion day and all of the particle emitters that came with the program are gone. There are zero items in the folder! Does anyone know how to fix this?

    go to the preferences folder, which is in the Library folder in your users folder, find the one called com.apple.motion.plist and throw it away. Reinstalling the suite doesnt over-write preferences file.

  • Particle Emitters and other presets missing!

    In Motion 5, the Particle Emitters, Replicators, Shapes, Gradients, and Shape Styles folders are empty! They only became empty yesterday, and I didn't do anything that would effect them(that I know of). What should I do?

    That is strange. I assume you mean from the tool bar access icons and not the Library or are they missing there as well? I would trash my Motion prefferences in your user library as a first step. If that doesn't work try a new user. Just create a new admin user and see if they are there then.

  • Motion Supplemental Update removed Particle Emitters, Replicators

    Hi everyone,
    This is my first time using a Pro Application and, sufficed to say, I am very impressed with Motion. One sticking point though: I was rummaging through the menu options to find some command when I came across the "Download Additional Content" option. I decided to get all I could and downloaded the Motion e Content 'Update' (view Support Article). Software Update did its thing and then a window popped up with a message, telling me to restart Motion to get the new content. I dutifully did so and continued about my work.
    At some point, I needed to use the Particle Emitter library. I click Library > Particle Emitters and, lo and behold, 0 items were found! Odd, as I was using these exact emitters before the update. I can confirm they are non-existent as I have another Mac with no supplemental content installed and Motion reports 203 items available for use.
    Is there an error in Motion that is causing it not find the emitters or did the Supplemental Content really delete the emitters (and Replicators too!)?

    I am having the exact same problem. My search field is empty, and when I choose to show package contents, the files are there. They just don't show up in motion.

    From your timeline, it seems that you applied a transition after each clip. Can I know why & what transition you applied ?
    Can you please elaborate what you meant by "I changed the last keyframe in the last clip to a Smooth" ?

    Because when you rotate the frame 360 degrees using the Y-axis, the image always comes back to the same position - which gives you a handy place to match cut to the next implementation of the rotation at a slightly slower pace.     So (not acounting for the pad video at the head and tail of the clip, a 1 second clip, followed by a 2 second clip, followed by a 4 second clip to give me a 7 second move.

    I applied the filter to the first clip, and set it so that it went from -360 to 360 in Y axis rotation. I then copied that clip and used Command -V to apply the same effect to the next to clips via paste attributes, UNCHECKING the Scale Attribute Times so that the spinning would slow down as the clips lengthened.
    Lastly, I changed the last keyframe in the last clip to a "Smooth" , and added head and tail trim to the entire effect so the bars would start static, spin and the end static.
    Like I say, it's far from perfect but may either point you toward a solution or trigger ideas of your own.

    Right click on X axis lables and go to format Axis Labels-->select the angle in rotation 45/90/180/270

    Depending on your project and needs there are several ways to do this:
    -Put the object and the particle emiter in a group and animate the group.
    -Use the match move behavior without tracking anlysis.
    -Use the match move behavior and track analysis.

    Personally, I use the Match Move behavior most of the time, it's really flexable. If you have something that is already animated, say a piece of paper, you can just reference the object and then link the other object, say some text, to the poition/scale/rotation as needed.  If you need to match something in a video, you can switch over to the tracker in the behaivor and analyze to follow a subject in a video.

    I am new to motion, so I am not even sure if what I am trying to do is even possible.....
    I have a close up shot of the american flag waving....I am trying to attach sparkles to the edge of the moving flag. I am using the fireworks 3 particle emitter and changed it so it will emit in the shape of a line (I also increased the birth rate and initial #). I am using the record button and going frame by frame. It works up to a point. However, when I try to rotate the line to stay aligned with the flag edge, instead of rotating the whole line, it begins to spread out and rotate the individual sparks that make up the particle emitter itself. Any advice?? Thanks in advance!!

    I tried selecting the group and that does not work either.......it rotates fine for the first 10 frames or so and after that it is no longer in the "shape" of a line and appears to duplicate itself instead of rotating.

  • Particle Emitters Look like they are running in 16 colors

    I have just upgraded to FCS 3 and have found a very odd behavior with every particle emitter in Motion 4. When I drop an emitter into the canvas the emitter seems to be behaving as if the computer was set to 16 colors (like back in the old days). About 50% of the emitters are showing up in the preview window and look correct there. The other 50% don't show up in the preview window. Regardless of the emitters behavior in the preview window though, they all appear as if they are running in 16 colors when placed into the canvas. Everything was working fine before upgrading to version 4.0. Any ideas would be appreciated. I have already tried trashing the preferences.

    FYI, this is actually my topic. My username just changed slightly.
    I updated to the newer version of ITunes, and now the burn starts, then cancels itself with an "error 4000". The problem didn't fix with the update, it just shifted a little.

  • Particle Emitters not appearing inExportion from compressorOrRendered inFCP

    I am attempting to create a simple tree with leaves falling from it. I do a couple of zooms in on the branches of the tree with the leaves falling in the background. The tree is an illustrator file i created and the leaf am using to replicate is a photoshop file.
    I applied the particle emitter to the leaf and adjusted it to look like a bunch of leaves where falling from the tree. As long as i did a ram preview, everything was fine. However, if i export using compressor and the default animation compression, the tree appears (and the zooms in work), but no leaves appear. I imported my motion file into FCP and if i scrub through the file in the timeline, the leaves appear in the animation, but as soon as i do a render all, the leaves disappear again.
    Any ideas as to why the leaves keep disappearing on me would be helpful. THanks!

    This was made with a heavy dose of particle emmiters! Maybe it might have even come from a 3D app.
