Partioning and ETable

Hello Gurus,
I have some misunderstanding and confusions.I know what partitioning is done on and what time chars are required.I also know how to do compression. Please read.
Everytime I read about partitioning it has to do with E table.
My questions are:
1-Is F Fact Table partitioned before partitioing it with Time Chars.Meaning does     Request IDs partition the F Fact Table?
2- When Time Char partitioning takes place its only for E Fact Table. But to have data in E Fact Table i understand you have to compress data.So then the question is does compression need to follow after partitioning?
I mean Partition on empty cube>Load Data>compress?
3- Is partitioning possible on F Fact Table. Will it help performance?
4- How to do partitioning on Aggregates if the cube is not partitioned?
Please answer these concerns for me.Points shall be assigned.
Thanks.

1) The F-table is partitioned. It is portitioned by request ID, so that individual requests can be added and deleted easily.
2) You need to setup partitioning before the cube has data. Then you need to load data into the F-table, then compress those requests, which will put them in the individual time partitioning buckets.
3) As mentioned earlier partitioning on the F-table is automatically done by BW, it is partitioned by request ID
4) I dont think you can control the database design on aggregates, they are handled by BW. Aggregates can be flat aggregates, they share dimension tables with cubes and there are some other idiosyncrasies that are all handled internally. I wouldnt worry about the aggregates, focus on your InfoCube design first.
hope that helps,
-John

  • Partioning and Running Windows on 10.4.11

    Hey guys, me again.
As I said before, I'm trying to get Windows working on my Mac. It seems I bought my Mac just a bit too early before Leapord was released. Anyway, how can I get to Boot Camp or similar? I DO have Disk Utility, but when I attempt to partition, all of the buttons are "Locked".
Again, help is very much appreciated.

Anyway, how can I get to Boot Camp or similar?
Upgrade to Mac OS X 10.5, or use a product such as Parallels Desktop, CrossOver Mac, or VMware Fusion. CrossOver does not require that Windows be installed to run Windows applications.
I DO have Disk Utility, but when I attempt to partition, all of the buttons are "Locked".
You cannot repartition the startup drive from the Disk Utility in Mac OS X versions prior to 10.5, and doing so in 10.4 or earlier will erase everything on it.

  • Logical Partition.

    Hello All,
I have a lil knowledge about logical partition. Could you please send me some document related to logical partition?
Where and how it can be used in BW?
    Thanks.

    Hi ,
1.Partitioning the cube in both physical and logical way helps you to increase its performance on Queriying.
Partitioning InfoCubes Using the Characteristic 0FISCPER (At Infocube maintainance)
    Prerequisites
When partitioning using 0FISCPER values, values are calculated within the partitioning interval that you specified in the InfoCube maintenance. To do this, the value for 0FISCVARNT must be known at the time of partitioning; it must be set to constant.
    Procedure
    1. The InfoCube maintenance is displayed. Set the value for the 0FISCVARNT characteristic to constant. Carry out the following steps:
    a. Choose the Time Characteristics tab page.
    b. In the context menu of the dimension folder, choose Object specific InfoObject properties.
    c. Specify a constant for the characteristic 0FISCVARNT. Choose Continue.
    2. Choose Extras -->DB Performance --> Partitioning. The Determine Partitioning Conditions dialog box appears. You can now select the 0FISCPER characteristic under Slctn. Choose Continue.
    3. The Value Range (Partitioning Condition) dialog box appears. Enter the required data.

  • Logical Partition of Cube

    Hi BW experts,
Can anyone explain the steps to create logical partitioning of Cube data?
I want to do it per fiscal year. If we create 05 cubes(Same structure) each for say fiscal year 04' 05'...08'
now how will the data flow into respective cubes.
    Kindly explain the steps.

  • Lost the access to the first partion  of the firewire drive and the data ?

    Hello to everybody,
after i moved 5,5GB Data from my internal harddisk, HFS+ , to my external Firewire drive, FAT 32 formatted for compatilibilty with a PC, i lost the access to the first partion of the firewire drive and the data. At first after having appearently finished copying the data a lot of ununderstable numbers and letters appeared on the first partion and couldn't be opened.
Using first aid showed the following messages:

Yep, you sure can. That's how I support my family's computers. I just entered their dynamic hostname in ARD, and it always updates their IP address in the ARD list should they have changed.

  • Cannot format hard drive and do a clean install

I'm in a pretty big mess right now.  I was using boot camp with lion and Windows 7 no problem and I wanted to edit the sizes of the partions.  It didnt go so well and I ended up losing both operating systems.  Now the big problem is when I boot up from the recovery partion I cannot do any sort of formating from the disk utility, it always give me some sort of error.  When I try to install lion via web there is no partion that I can Install it to.  I can install Windows no problem from a USB drive whcih I have done already.  When managing the disk in windows I see 2 of the windows partions, the mac recovery partion, and an 80 GB partition that I can format but I cannot do anything else with.  I dont have any images or recovery devices other than the recovery partition.  I need some advice on how to get the drive back to mac format so I can re install lion.

From the disk utility every time I would try to format the partitions or resize anything it would say cannot unmount disk and there was another error I cant remember.  I think I'm on the right track though.  What I've managed to do so far is with the disk utility on the recovery partition, I formated a usb drive and then installed Lion on that drive.  The drive is painfully slow but it seems to be working.  Where I am at now is I have booted from the the flash drive and managed to Format the Hard drive back to mac format and I am now creating an image of the USB stick that I can hopfully copy to the hard drive.  Creating the image is taking a while due to the crappy transfer rate of the USB stick.
If you have any suggestions of where to go next or what to do I would appreciate it.

  • I want to use two separate Lion Time Machine backups and use them to create two separate profiles on one new computer

This is something I need to do temporarily but I must do it.
I have an iMac 27 (end of year 2009) I5.  It has 1 TB internal and I want to replace it with a 2 TB internal.
I have time machine backups on an external hard drive that has been connected via Firewire.
I have another iMac (my son's)Imac 24 Intel Core 2 Duo that has it's own separate Time machine backup to it's own separate firewire connected external drive.  Both machines are completely up to date with the latest version of Lion and all other necessary software updates.
When the internal hardrive is replaced - I want to use my latest time machine backup to create one profile on the imac and then use my son's latest time machine back up for a second profile.  The end goal being to have everything from my current set up ie: apps, documents, itunes, etc existing in one profile and everything in my son's current set up existing in the other profile.   We can both be administrators for the time being as well.  I should note even though we both have some of the same apps, we both also have other apps that the other does not.
My profile will be using about 900 gigs of total space.
My son's profile will be using about 250 gigs of total space.
This is temporary until the new iMac is released.  Then I will want to transfer my profile to that leaving my son's intact on the iMac 27 I5.
I realize that during the temporary period that Time Machine will be making backups of this entire two profile setup, which I am now understanding as I write this will create a new issue for me when I want to transfer only my profile to the new computer as well.  But one bridge to cross at a time, I guess.
I need to do this because we must bring his current computer to my father - as his iMac G5 is inoperable.  We have been doing this round robin hand me down in our family since IMac DV special edition :-)
Any insight on this would be greatly appreciated.  And any other suggestions as well.
    Thanks very much.

Hey Shootist000,  Thanks for the replies.  First off, I am actually okay if we both have each other applications so I am not concerned about that. It is still unclear from what you have said as to whether I can in fact, use these two separte time machine backup to create two separate profiles on the new hard drive.  If that in fact can be done, then - will it create two copies of the apps we both have in the ROOT of the drive as well as placing all the ones we each have separately?
And reading your second reply, makes me think that maybe the partition is the way to go to begin with and then down the road - after I am in the new iMac, I could reformat the iMac 27 with only one partion and restore my son's latest back prior to the reformat thus giving him full access to the 2 TB of the drive.
If this is still making sense, does this mean :
    replace the 1TB with a 2TB - but have it partitione - 1.5 TB & 500 GB.
Install(Restore using Time Machine) my latest back up prior to the  1.5 partition
Install (Restore using Time Machine) my son's latest back up prior to the 500 gig partition
Lastly, in order for us both to be using the partioned computer - I am assuming Switch user can no longer be used - so would we need to restart and select our respective partions in order to use the computer?   And if so, how would we each be able to be using time machine to back up - two separte external hard drives - with each one dedicated to only one partition? Or ?
    Thanks so much.
Ironically, I am only trying to do this so that I don't need to manually install all his apps, setting, games, blah blah for this temporary period.  :-)

  • OSX Lion and push notifications working intermittently

Seems to work when it feels like it; any suggestions on what I can look for?
I can register a device, and pushing seems to work 50% of the time and stall the other 50%; nothing in Console ...

I am havng this same exact problem. Recently, I reinstalled my OSX Lion fresh, and also just installed CS5.5 Design Premium. I have been experiencing this same error repeatedly.
On my computer there are two separate Scratch Discs (non-partioned) and when the error first popped up, I tried switching between Scratch Discs. One at a time, even using other drives and still received the same error. I've done everything I can find suggested to no avail. All OS updates are done, CS5.5 is updated, permissions repaired, disks repaired, graphics driver current, OpenGL disabled, etc....
If we can determine a fix, it would be greatly appreciated. Photoshop is an awesome tool that I use extensively, and this is driving me insane!
BTW, here is the error I believe he is getting (same one I see way too many times a day)
    Thanks, Billy

  • W520: Partition & Re-Format HDD and then Re-Install Windows 7

Greetings.  I'm new to Lenovo and new to actually owning a ThinkPad, although not completely new to ThinkPads in general, since I used company-supplied ones when I worked for Big Blue (some time ago, now).
Anyway, I just took delivery of my W520, and I'd like to get to a "clean" system by using a Win7(64)-Pro installation disk to partition the factory-configured HDD into three logical drives (C, D & E); then format the C-partion and install the OS.  Of course, immediately afterwords, I'll need to re-install all the device drivers, and optionally, I may re-install some of the Lenovo utilities (e.g., the color calibration app).
My previous experience with other laptops (DELL) suggests this should be quite doable.  But if anyone knows of any reason why this would be inherently problematic with my W520, I'm all ears.  Assuming it's not inherently problematic, the first order of business would be to somehow obtain the aforementioned Windows Installation disk.
Now, I know the Recovery Partition and related utilites provide the ability to create Recovery Media, but what I don't know is whether or not this ability includes creating a Win7 Installation disk, such that using it doesn't inevitably lead one down the road to re-creating the original factory-configured environment, with all its bloatware, etc.  I wonder about this because of a sentence in the User's Guide that said something like this: “Recovery media can only be used to restore your harddrive to its original factory settings.”
So if I can't create an actual Win7 Installation disk from the recovery partition, I guess I'll have to find another way to obtain one... from Microsoft?  If so, I'm hoping I wouldn't have to purchase another license, in addition to the one included with my Thinkpad.
I have other, somewhat related questions associated with getting my system ready for installing and running actual applications, but for now this is the point I need guidance on.  Any help you can provide will be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks in advance,
    —Thri

[edit] Forgot my manners.  Hello and welcome!
I don't have a "W", but most of what you want to do is straight-forward.
If you make a recovery media set using Rescue and Recovery, that will restore the entire hard drive to factory state.  There's no way (that I know of) to make "vanilla" media using a factory install.
Even if you don't want to use the recovery media for your "new" install, please burn a set ASAP - before touching your partitions.
You can download a clean MS install DVD image legally - and activate it legally using the Windows activation key that came with your laptop (on the bottom or in the battery compartment) as long as you are installing the same version that came with the machine.  Pro -> Pro, Home -> Home, etc.  You can activate either 32 or 65 bit with the same key.
Legal Resources for Downloading Windows 7
After a vanilla install, I'd recommend installing ThinkVantage System Update and using it to pull down the Lenovo drivers and apps.  That avoids having to find and install every piece by hand. You don't have to accept all of them.  You can do a selective install.
[edit] System Update 4.03, Installation instructions for System Update 4.03
Folks often want to do a "clean" install to avoid what they consider excess Lenovo "baggage".  I don't find most of the Lenovo stuff to be a problem, and it's easy to uninstall the few that I don't use.
If you need to repartition, that a different deal.  Once you do, you (most likely) won't be able to use the recovery partition even if it is still there.  BURN YOUR MEDIA.

  • Recovery Partition mandatory for File Vault and unencrypted TM Backup?

I recently had to setup my Macbook Pro from scratch meaning erasing the whole disk and start from there.
The update to Lion took already place a while ago and I had File Vault active. After making a last backup using
TM I erased the disk and all partitions including Recovery partition and used the Leopard system DVD to boot
    the machine.
From there I used the restore function to restore my TM backup to the MacBook. However, as the drive was
not partioned and not formated, I had to do this manually. Apparently, the recovery process via TM does not include
that. After system recovery, I booted from the Macbook and all apps and configuration seemed ok.
I was a little surprised to see that I was able to do this recovery without being asked for ID and password of the user's File Vault access
or the File Vault recovery key. All I needed was the TM ID and password (which is different from the owners ID and password)
I am not sure if this is supposed to work like this but I looks rather easy to gain access to application an data of another user if that
    is all it takes?
Now booting Lion again, I checked File Vault and noticed it was disabled although it was enabled for quite a while and long time
before I took the latest backup. I could not turn it on, after providing a recovery key and asking me wether I wanted to write it down
or safe it with Apple which I declined I wanted to reboot the notebook to start encryption but stopped saying my partition or volume
would not support File Vault. This was GUID and MacOS Extended Journal partition and volume which to my knowledge would
certainly support File Vault. In fact this is basically what I had before when File Vault was turned on and running.
I called Apple support a few times. The second agent told me that it does not work because there is not recovery partition on my
system but there was when I took the latest backup and I do have other means to get the recovery screen. Anyway it seems that
File Vault required a local Recovery partition and I was wondering if anyone can tell me why this dependency exist. If I write down the
recovery key, why would I need it to be stored on my disk as well?
Also, if anyone has an idea if there is a way of creating a local recovery partition without having to go through the lenghty process of installing
Leopard then upgrade to Lion and install all the apps and configure the OS again, would be great? I assume when I am back on Lion and use the TM
backup for recovery, I probably end up with having the Recovery partition deleted and start from scratch again.
I am a little concerned about the fact that it seems so easy to gain access to a protected backup and that the TM restore process does not include
restoring partition and volumes as well. Who knows how many other dependencies exist and users have to reinstall their system again after recovery.
I was following the recovery instruction of Apple but perhaps someone knows a better way to do this?

Just an update, I went ahead and installed Lion again over the existing TM restored installation using the Lion Update file and at least File Vault is working. Interestingly, I still do not have a Recover partition so obviously something new for Apple Support to learn.

  • Late 2013 iMac 27".  Used boot camp and installed windows 7 pro.  While in Windows 7, in my pc the mac os does not show.  Is there anyway to fix this outside of restoring entire computer and trying again.  Thank you from a mac newbie

Hello.  I bought a new iMac 27" with the following specs:
    3.5GHz Intel Core i7 Quad-Core (Haswell)
    32GB of 1600MHz DDR3 RAM
    3TB Fusion Drive
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780M Graphics (4GB)
    27" LED-Backlit IPS Display
    2560 x 1440 Native Resolution
    802.11ac/a/b/g/n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0
Thunderbolt, USB 3.0, SDXC Card Reader
720p FaceTime HD Camera, Dual Mics
    Mac OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion (64-bit)
After installing all Mac update, used Bootcamp to create a Windows 7 drive.  Everything went fine to a point.  While in my Mac OS i can see the windows partition just fine and see/edit documents.  However, when in the Windows 7 Pro 64 bit, I cannot see the mac os in my computer at all.
Can someone please help this mac owner newbie?  This process worked fine on my mac mini and i have no troubles.  It is just on my new iMac that it wont work/show the highlighted paragraph above
Any ideas and/or help would be greatly appreciated.

I understand that much.  On my MAC Mini, if you look above at original post, I CAN see both OS while in the Windows 7 partition or the MAC OS.  This is NOT the case on my iMac.  Again, when in the MAC OS I can see the windows partion and move information between the two that way.  When in the WINDOWS partition, the only one that shows is the Windows OS from my computer or network.  The only way you can tell its even a MAC is the bootcamp icon in the bottom right corner of toolbar.  Both have same version of MAC OS so both should work same way..  When i double click on my computer, it should show both the Windows drive AND the MAC (as does my mini and another iMac 21.5 that i have).  This iMac does not do that - only shows windows.
