Partioning
hai
can u tell about logical and physical partioning?when u go for that
Hi,
Logical Partioning is when you create several cubes with the exact same structure and you load data in them with different values for one or a combination of several characteristic values. For instance imagine you have a scenario ending with a total number of records of 1'200 mio records over 10 years of operation which would be a quite huge number of records for one single InfoProvider (not easy to handle and performance probelms); you decide then to partition logically this cube with 0CALYEAR resulting in one cube per year; each cube will then have 120 mio records. You will then query this data via a multiprovider having all these cubes.
Physical partitioning (ORACLE): the fact table of an infocube are themselves organized and splitted into partitions; this is only possible with 0FISCPER and 0CALMONTH; when querying such a fact table on one month, your RDBMS will take advantage of this partitioning by selecting less data. Partition pruning will also be an advantage if you are using Oracle. I recommend to systematically use the physical partitioning whenever it is possible.
hope this helps...
Olivier.

I have this doubt. I've just bought an external drive, especifically a Seagate GoFlex Desk 3 tb.
I want to know if it is recomendable to make a partion exclusively for time machine and let another one so I can put there music, photos, videos, etc that I should need to use or copy to another computer.
May half and half, 1.5 tb for time machine and 1.5 tb for data.
I have an internal hard drive of 500 GB (499.25 GB) in my macbook pro.
Any recommendation? As I said, yes. Be sure your Time Machine partition has at least 1 TB for backups.
1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to two (2). Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed. -
How to: make one or two partions at a raid system?
Hey
how can i make one or more a partions at a raid system?
i will make the partions at a 250gb raid. one with 120gb for the bootsector, and the other for documents, etc.
is there a hwo to anywhere? dont find one?
please read my second question.... 2 raids at one mac pro?
regaradsO.K., i was looking the hole day to get that partions on a raid working.
to make the partions on each HD with the same volume, this is no problem. when you then create the first raid, works fine. but when you make the second raid, you get a massage, that this raid is not found.
then you see both raids at the disc utilty, but only at the first you seen the volumen down under, by the second not. the first works, the second is not avabiele.
so, now i have only one big mirrowed raid for my boot sector, and its runs fast, quick and without big noise... thats what i want, and the second big raid for my files.
2 raids at one mac pro with 4 hd. one with 2 x 250 gb hd for the bootsector, and the other with 2 x 500gb for files
thx to all, and you kappy

Dreamweaver 8 - Issue saving to Mac partion from Windows
I just bought an Intel Mac, which I'm running Windows on
using Bootcamp (as all my Adobe software is for Windows). I use a
software called MacDrive, so when I'm working in Windows I can
access files saved on the Mac partion. But I'm having issues saving
files in Dreamweaver to the Mac partion. Everything appears to save
correctly, until I go back and open the file, and see that the end
of the file will have leftover data in it from the previous save.
For example, if I remove two lines of code from an HTML file, then
when I re-open the file, I'll have a duplicate set of
</body></html> tags leftover from the previous version
of the file. I do not have this problem when editing and saving
files to the Mac partion using Notepad or any other Windows
program, only Dreamweaver.
Has anyone here had a similar problem? If so, were you able
to fix it somehow? If not, would you be willing to help me contact
Adobe to get this issue solved? Thank you for your time.Don't want to hijack the thread, but since you mentioned a
cross-grade I
have a question. I will be making the move from being PC
based to MAC based
in the next 6 months. Since I will be replacing my aging dell
laptop with
an imac pro, my next desktop purchase will be mac as well
With the current CS3 I will just be running in parralels, but
I asked about
when cs4 comes around if I could just upgrade to the mac
version. I was
told by a cs rep that this is not possible I would have to
purchase a fresh
install. Is this not correct, is there a way around it?
thanks,
randy

How to create a new partion (to save my files & Folders) in my HP (Compaq LE1902x )PC that has already 4 primary partitions ? when something goes wrong along with OS(C) drive my all files are lost. so i want to create a new partition & dedicate it to my files & folders.
I would consider another problem. What if the hard drive (not the OS) fails. You'd lose all your data, all partitions. It seems better logic would be to copy your files and folders to either an external hard drive or USB thumb drive.
I would not use the internal backup program, but would manually copy the data. I also would not leave such device attached to the computer.
In my system I have a separate USB thumb drive that stored critical medical and legal documents. That way, I can travel with it, as needed. I also clone my primary desktop every 30-45 days. That way, if I get a failure, it's only that far back on lesser files.
I am a volunteer. I am not an HP employee.
To say THANK YOU, press the "thumbs up symbol" to render a KUDO. Please click Accept as Solution, if your problem is solved. You can render both Solution and KUDO.
The Law of Effect states that positive reinforcement increases the probability of a behavior being repeated. (B.F.Skinner). You toss me KUDO and/or Solution, and I perform better.

my mac book air can't start installation, because i use windows installation in DOS to make partion, now no mac os on it. How to get back the mac os? i have a window based iso image from a friend, because in my country there is no Apple service.
It sounds like you destroyed your boot partition and the recovery partition. Depending on it's age, your MacBook Air might be able to do a net boot. Plug and ethernet connection into it and attempt to boot. If it has the right firmware, it will find a net boot configuration on the net and boot that. Then it will give you a Recovery Partition like display and allow you to reinstall the OS X version that came with it.... assuming that it was Lion or ML. If your computer came with Snow Leopard, then even the net boot won't work.
At that point you need a bootable USB Key, or an external DVD drive AND a Snow Leopard installation DVD.
An Apple Store, if there is one nearby, MAY be able to get you going again. However, whatever is on the SSD now will be toast too. -
How do I securely erase all the data from my hard drive (it has a bootcamp partion which I succesfully erased). I'm giving my Macbook Pro to my daughter but I want all the data securely gone before I give it to her. Disk Utilities does not allow me to start the erasing process.
You can not erase a drive you are using to boot and run the computer.
You have to boot the computer from a CD/DVD disc, thumb drive or external drive that contains the files need to start the computer and has the Disk Utility program on it.
Tha would be the original system Discs that came with your computer or a CD/DVD disc, external drive or thumb drive you specifically made to do this. -

Back-up of via TM of entire disk before partioning
I would like to partition my internal hard-drive and am running my first TM back-up. Will it back-up the entire contents of the entire hard-drive or just that which relates to my account on my Mac.
In other words, will I need to run time-machine from my wife's account as well?
Once I have a complete back-up, then I will partion the main hard-drive and will restore from TM
Thanks,

Virtually, everything on your Mac, including all user accounts.
In other words, will I need to run time-machine from my wife's account as well?
No.
Once I have a complete back-up, then I will partion the main hard-drive and will restore from TM
That should work. Make sure that he partition you reserve for the Mac OS environment and all the user accounts is big enough for everything you currently have on it AND has room to grow. Additionally, be preparing for the fact that the first TM backup will be another full backup of the entire system.
*_Time Machine Always Performs a Full Backup After a Full Restore_*
Actually, this is normal. Anytime your hardware has changed, or you have reinstalled the operating system again, Time Machine will perform a new full backup. Consider the following according to the KB article below:
*Full Backup After Restore*
Bear in mind that in all cases Time Machine will perform a full backup after a full restore. This is normal. Time Machine will resume incremental backups after the full backup has completed. To view previous backups, Control-click or right-click the Time Machine icon in your Dock or Option-click the Time Machine menu extra and Choose "Browse Other Time Machine Disks," then select your previous backup volume. You will enter Time Machine and be able to browse your previous back ups and restore files. [http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1338]
So even on unchanged hardware, if you reinstall your system software and restore your user data, Time Machine starts anew, and you will not be able to resume backing up with the same history as the previous backups.
While there may be ways to fool/hack Time Machine into recognizing previous backups without performing another full backup, they are likely rather elaborate.
Ultimately, though, in a couple of months, all the effort to preserve old backups may seem pointless. After all, Time Machine will eventually purge away that data anyways as it replaces it with new files.
It may simply be easier to begin a fresh series of backups while saving the previous backups until your satisfied that you have enough history built up. Then delete the old backups.
Hope this clarifies some things.
Cheers! -
I'm a avid gamer and for my gaming needs most of the games that I love require Windows ,but due to my constant clicking I drain my mouse battery very fast so I always have backups. Is there anyway I can check how much mouse battery I have left so I can be sure before I start a gaming session that I'll be fine? Switching back and forth between partions is an option ,but I find it as more of a last resort then something to do normally.
Thanks in advance!call them, tell them you NEED a new battery installed, and they need to tell you when they can do it. That is their job to help you! Give pushback if necessary.

I tried to install windows 7 in my macbook pro late 2011 but i tried to create partions after it installed and it turn to dynamic disks and i can't access mac or win 7 what should I do i cant format it because i dont have a backup
It's not that you can't format it because you have no backup, it's because you'll lose everything when you do. Lesson learned. Always have a backup.

Bootcamp partion lost after OS X update, Need help repair my disk.
Hi.
After updating to Yousimiti yesterday, i encountered som problems with my bootcamp partion.
I wasn't able to boot from the partion. I googled a lot, and found some posts, where the problem was resolved, and followed the following steps:
sudo fdisk -e /dev/disk0
p
setpid 4
07
flag 4
p
write
y
After this i was able to boot form my Drive, but it tells me: "Operating system missing".
Then i started investigating further i saw that my bootcamp partion now only is 60GB, where before it was 100GB.
When i first made my Bootcamp i made it 60GB which i fast found out was not enough for the programs i needed, so i used a program on windows to expand the patron, from empty space on the disk. Now i have 40GB blokced space, and the 60GB Bootcamp.
From what i have read the problem is that Windows and OS X does not use the same Data table format.
Is it possible to Rewrite the datable, os that OS X knows that the Windows part is 100GB and not only 60?
Underneath here i linked to some screenshots of the problem, Hope you guys can help me! (Sorry that it is danish, hope you see et anyways)
And there some info that i got from a "Partition inspector app":

Portege R100: recovery issue - Error partioning drive
My old portege r100 is not working at all.

YannisHi
It seems that HDD could not be partitioned properly.
Maybe the HDD is not ok?
Check if the HDD is recognized and listed in BIOS.
If the HDD is not listed, then the HDD is dead and should be replaced.
If the HDD is listed, then there could be a problem with the HDD partitions table
You could test the HDD using a tool called Drive Fitness Test.
You could also try to format the HDD firstly. You could attach this HDD to another computer using an USB HDD controller. This helps you to get access to the HDD and to format this drive -
Trouble deleting partions.... Toshiba Satellite P505-S8010
I have a new Toshiba Satellite P505-S8010. It can with Win 7 installed. I hate Win 7 so I want to install Win XP 64Bit Sp2. I have put the DVD into the drive (and set BIOS to compatible mode). I get to the windows set-up screen were you can del or create partitions and tell it were you want to install Windows. There are currently 3 partitions listed:
1) 1.5 GB System partition
2) 240 GB Main partition
3) 300 MB (unknown partition)
I tried to del partition 1 and it won't let me. Why ??? then I tried to create a partition within the 240 GB main partition and it said ok ... but then when I tried to format the partition it said "Denied" why ???
I want to del ALL partions and create a couple new ones ... why cant I ?? it seems like they are locked somehow but I have never seen that before ... ??
Please advise me on what to do to del the partitions (via windows setup)
Thanks !!
Johnthat is all the recovery partitions. make a set of recovery media using the recovery media creator program on the laptop. for 2 reasons.
1.incase xp wont run correctly you can get your system back up and running.
2. you can use the media to completely wipe the hdd.
then you will have a completely clean hdd to start from.
