Partition Affecting Mac OSX

Hi, I had another question regarding partitioning. I have a new Macbook running 10.5.6, with 4 GB of RAM and 320 GB of hard drive space. I am planning to put Vista Ultimate on this computer, and I wanted to partition it 110 Windows, 210 Mac. The installation manual said I should make sure that this partition would not affect the OSX part of the partition. Is this an acceptable partition? Thanks.

Hi and welcome to Discussions,
110GB for Vista is more than acceptable.
Usually I would propose something about 50 - 70GB for Vista.
Make sure to always have about 10% free disk space on your OSX partition, otherwise OSX can slow down drastically and/or show some erratic behaviour.

Do SpyEye, Zeus Trojan horses affect Mac OSX?

I received a mail Nov 12 from a known address. The only content was a link, which seems to be related to SpyEye, which I found (afterwards) is a trojan horse version of Zeus.
Stupidly I clicked it and then looked. No further clicks...But I also replied to the mail.
What I saw were different job possibilities, one of which was to post links for Google....?
My Sophos virus/malware scanner did not report anything, and when I became aware I immediately continued to scan the computer and Sophos did not find anything.
Does anyone know if these trojans can/will affect Mac OSX v. 10.5.8?

2 partitions, 2 Mac OSX's

Hi all,
Recently got a new macbook pro running snow leopard. I currently use OSX Tiger at work and would like to install my build on here until we discontinue using it. I have partitioned the internal harddrive using disk utility - no problems there.
I then tried to use the Mac OS Tiger install DVD to install on partition number 2 - no joy.
Next I hooked up an external drive with an image of my Tiger install and restored that across using disk utility . It appears all the directories are there but the drive is not bootable. I have tried using the option key on boot up but the drive is non recognisable.
Surely I'm missing something simple here? It must be possible to run 2 Mac OSX's on 2 partitions?
If anyone could help I'd really appreciate it.

...brainwave - the original tiger setup was on a PowerPC setup machine. Perhaps it's the difference between the PowerPC and Intel drive?

No, the problem is that your machine did not come with Tiger installed. An intel that came with Tiger can run only Tiger, Leopard, and Snow Leopard. An intel that came with Leopard can run only Leopard and Snow Leopard. An intel that came with Snow Leopard can run only Snow Leopard. And, these restrictions hold on bootable external drives.

Accessing files on boot camp windows partition and Mac OSx partition

Before I install Windows 7 64 bit on my iMac using Apple's instruction manual, I have a question. The manual states:
*+FAT—Provides better compatibility, allowing you to read and write files on the Windows volume from Mac OS X. This partition must be 32 GB or smaller.+*
*+If you’re installing Windows Vista or Windows 7, the Windows partition must use the NTFS format.+*
I can read, but I want to be sure I understand these two statements as they relate to each other. Because the Windows 7 partition must be NTFS format, does this mean that there is no way to read, write or copy files from one partition to the other, no matter what the partition size is?
If that is the case, I assume the best way to move files from one partition to the other would be to use a flash drive or is that also not possible due to the file format on the flash drive? I also have an external hard drive used for time machine. Any way to use that?
How will I move files from one partition to the other? And yes, I really want to do this.

Can you read files stored on the Windows partition through Mac OSX?

I'm new to Mac, getting one soon, so correct me if I'm wrong in assuming that OS X can make shortcut folders to other locations on the disk drive like windows can.
I'm getting a 500GB hard drive and have a decent movie collection to store on the hard drive, and the Macbook Pro is coming preconfigured with 256GB each for Mac and Windows. I won't really put much on the Windows side, so I thought maybe I could put my movies on the Windows side and then create a shortcut over to there and place it on my Mac side desktop, so that when I click on it, it takes me to the folder in Windows which stores the movies, so that I would still have easy access to them but they would be counted under Windows' partition. First off can you make shortcuts like that, going cross partition? And secondly, I just assumed they would open fine as long as I got VLC player, until I read stuff about NTFS and HTS+ and stuff, meaning Mac can't write to Windows and vice-versa, but I think Mac can read Windows or something from the bootcamp drivers.

Using Mac OSX Install Disc 1, I am not able to get any further than the Partition tab. It allows me to select my hard drive selection, but will not allow me to make any other selections. Does anyone know their way around this obstacle? Thanks!

Hello, The Hatter, I read about the 'trick' of backing up, erasing, and restoring too, but I figured it would take longer than defragmenting the disk.
But the defragmentation process has just finished! so I'm gonna try to run Boot Camp again soon!

And P.S. I didn't clone my system onto the external drive, I just inserted the Mac OS X Install CD, rebooted holding down the "C" key, and installed a fresh Snow Leopard system onto the predetermined partition. I will use that in cases of emergency, when my main/internal system becomes unusable.

Can't install windows to mac osx partition!

Hi, I had 2 partitions in my macbook pro, 1 for mac osx and 1 for bootcamp, and I wanted to install mac osx to a firewire hard drive, but i messed it up and installed mac osx OVER the bootcamp partition.
Now I have 2 mac osx partitions on the macbook pro, and can't reformat the partition to reinstall bootcamp.
Is there a way to reformat that partition and reinstall bootcamp (windows)?

That is why backup should be #1 and last.
You have to return (ie, reformat) your drive probably back to one partition with just Mac OS before you can use Boot Camp Assistant.
While at it, just clone one of your Mac OS volumes over to FW now. Later, with Windows installed, make an image of that (WinClone) while in Mac OS to your FW drive also.

MacBook Pro not booting to mac osx making partition on windows side and windows not booting either help

I have a macbook pro with windows 7 on bootcamp partition. I made a partition in windows 7 using disk mgmt and after that my computer wont show mac os partition and only show windows and when i boot to windows it errors out with blue screen unmountable volume. I was able to get in to command prompt of windows and use that command to boot to mac os but it failed giving error bootcamp.msi not found please any help in this issue will be appreciated.

Can't start up with Mac osx after installing windows on partition

Hello guys.
I installed windows on a partition of 100gb and I restarted the iMac so I can log on to Mac osx.
I hold down the option key after I hear the sound but only the windows disk appears there.
I tried the DVD that came with my Mac by holding down the "c" key but nothing happened. I was holding it down for 2-3 minutes.
I need some help here
Is there a way to boot Mac again?
Is there a chance I deleted Mac osx by installing windows?
And if there is how the **** am I getting it back since the osx DVD does not boot??

The Macbook will not allow you to startup with your Install DVD while you have Open Firmware password enabled. Disable that first, then try again....

Reinstall Mac OSX on partitioned drive without losing Windows data

Several weeks ago, I used bootcamp to partition my mac so I could install Windows. I set aside about 20GB for Windows. I did it so that I could download a program I need to take the bar exam.
Everything worked fine for about a week. Then my "mac hard drive" started running slowly, freezing and crashing where I had to do manual restarts. The windows hard drive worked fine. Then, my mac hard drive quit starting up completely. It would freeze on the grey/blue screens.
Went to a mac store. The guy didn't know what to do (because he wasn't trained in boot camp) but told me I could try doing an install-without-erasing of Mac OS on the mac hard drive. I did this, and it helped, but did not solve the problem. It still froze/was slow.
Now, the Mac hard drive doesn't completely start up, it freezes after I enter my log in information.
I want to know the following: If I do a complete reset/reinstall of the mac OS on my mac hard drive, will it affect my Windows hard drive? I ABSOLUTELY CANNOT lose the program I have installed on my Windows hard drive. However, I am a bit nervous that if I don't take any action now, whatever problem is occurring may seep over into my Windows hard drive.
Any advice would be wonderful. Thanks!

you could use [Winclone|http://twocanoes.com/winclone> to clone the winsloth partition to an external, then erase your internal drive, reinstall OS X, have bootcamp assistant create a new partition for winsloth, and finally clone your winsloth installation back.

USB Headset doesn't work on Mac OSX but does on my WinXP Bootcamp partition

Hi all,
I bought my FIRST Mac 2 days ago and am very excited about the migration. My reality is that I need WinXP for work-related activities and so I successfully installed Bootcamp and both WinXP and Mac OSX is working fine.
My problem is with a brand new Logitech USB Stereo Headset 250. It works just fine on the Windows XP side, but I can't get it to work on the Mac OSX side. Is there something I should be 'turning on' to get the headset to work? Like I said, it just 'worked' when I started up with the WinXP partition but when I restarted in the Mac OSX partition, it doesn't work.
Apologies if this is a simple thing that the veteran Mac crowd is snickering at as they read this, but I truly want to use the Mac OS as much as possible and if I can't get the headset to work on the Mac side it won't be a good thing.
Any suggestions?

Got it (sorry all) - I went into the System Preferences and selected the USB headset from the 'output' tab.

Quickbooks does not support Parallels anymore. I hear Apple Bootcamp is an opton. Are there any recommendations for running Quickbooks Pro 2010 on Mac?

QuickBooks Pro 2010 for Mac is not supported in Lion. QB Pro 2011 will work, but I just got an email today that 2011 will not be updated to work in Mountain Lion. QB Pro 2012 will be updated for ML.
Be aware that the Mac version of QuickBooks is shamefully lacking in features compared to the Windows version. I do use the Mac version, but it has more features than I need for a small business, so it doesn't affect me. No one knows why Intuit seems to hate Mac users, but they show it every day.
If QB Pro 2012 for Mac can be downloaded as a demo, I would strongly suggest testing with it before making a final decision. You will be able to import the Windows data, but possibly not all of it, depending on the Windows version features you use.
Boot Camp allows you to install Windows on its own, bootable partition. When you boot to it, you are of course running Windows in every sense of the word. Just on Mac hardware rather than typical PC gear. Your Windows version of QB will work there without issue. The problem is having to boot back and forth between Windows and OS X, depending on what software it is you need to use at the time.

OS X Lion installs a hidden recovery partition that is bootable and that will present these tools to you when you boot to it.
This is happening because a problem with your OS X installation has resulted in your Mac not being able to boot to the main OS partition and is therefore resorting to the only available boot partition, which is your recovery partition. When you quit the OS X Tools program and restart it is just continually loading the same partition.
To overcome this you have two options. The first is to restore from a recent Time Machine backup if you have Time Machine set up. To do this, connect your Time Machine drive, and then click the "Restore from Time Machine Backup" option in the OS X Tools menu. Then select the most recent backup, and restore it to your main boot drive.
The second option is to launch the OS X installer from the OS X Tools menu and reinstall the operating system. This may take a while since it will have to download the installer files from Apple, but it should restore the main boot drive. Doing this will not affect your documents, programs, and settings, and should keep these preserved while only rewriting the system files required to boot and run the system. After doing this, be sure to choose "Software Update" from the Apple menu and immediately update your system to the latest version.
Let us know if you have any difficulty or questions about these steps.

Problem installing Mac OSX on my new MacBook hard drive...

i am beside myself again...(i just visited my local Genius bar this afternoon). Any help would be most appreciated! :o)
i purchased a 2.5 inch SATA Fujitsu 120GB laptop hard drive for my new MacBook. Followed the awesome* instructions on "how to replace/upgrade hard drive", and took out the original Toshiba HD. What the instructions* failed to mention was that i would eventually need to use a Torx screwdriver (star-shaped) to remove the caddy/carriage from the Toshiba HD. Got that the next day and replaced the Toshiba 80GB with my new 120GB Fujitsu drive..., it slipped into place nicely but i did notice that the Toshiba had four short wires protruding out to the right of the contacts, which my new Fujitsu didn't have... hmmmm...?!
anyways, tried to install Mac OSX on the new drive, booted up with the install disc... went thru' chosing the language (English), agreed to the second step... but when it came time to install, there was NO icon at all in the box where i am asked where i want to install it!!!
so i go to disk utilities, and see that my Fujitsu HD is indeed recognized, but none of the buttons in first aid are active... so i can't check it.
i figured that had to do with the four little wires, so i replaced the original Toshiba and made a reservation with Genius Bar to ask for assistance.
this afternoon, i explained my problem and was told the four wires have NOTHING to do with it... Lawrence (the genius) told me to (actually, first he said Apple does not recommend my doing this... and that i should go to a 3rd party computer store such as Dino to get help!) go back to disk utilities and partition, then erase this drive and then i will see the icon for this drive in the install box.
Well i did everything i was told to do and... still, there is no icon for my Fujitsu HD! :o(
I was able to partition, after which there was a disc0 under the Fujitsu drive on the left side of the disk utilities. When i go to system profiler, and click on ATA... it too shows the Fujitsu drive... but i cannot install because there is NOTHING to click on at the installation step! the "continue" button is not active and only the "back" button is actively mocking me!!!
i know many of you have successfully upgraded your hard drive... what am i doing wrong? Would a different brand work better? I know Seagate is quite popular, and OWC sells a Western Digital version as well as a Hitachi... do those four little wires make a difference? Would the Seagate come with those wires???

...after getting back from school, my MacBook was STILL in the process of verifying and "supposedly" repairing... since i was gone for over 10 hours, i finally assumed the drive was either defective or just incompatible, and quit disk utility.
...this morning i went out and bought a new Seagate 120GB SATA (they didn't have 160GB SATA drives, only 160GB ultra-ATA drives) 2.5 inch HD. This one DID have those four wires to the right of the contacts... (i don't know how important they are), and after changing and exchanging the Toshiba/Fujitsu HDs, it was a breeze putting in the new Seagate drive.
Erased > patritioned > and sure enough, the icon showed up and the biggest smile showed up on my face as i finished installing! :o)
I contacted the original seller of my fujitsu hd (it was a 2.5 inch, 120GB, serial ATA notebook drive) and he was kind enough to say "just pack it up and send it back for a refund!" (minus shipping and re-stocking fees of course! :o)
Just wanted to mention that, the fujitsu hd WAS recognized by disk-utility and at the bottom left of the window it said that the fujitsu was "GUID partitioned"..., so i am still scratching my head as to why it didn't work?!
I want to thank everyone that offered advice, it was helpful and i feel more comfortable with my MacBook after this trying and very frustrating episode! :o)
