Partition changed from 2 to 1 after downgrade to XP

Hi, I have a question about the changing of the partition after switching to XP. I got my T61 today (finally!) which is very exciting. I got it with Vista Business just because I want to be able to downgrade it to XP to use many softwares that are not supported by Vista. After I finished downgrading to XP, I realized that the system has automatically changed the original 2 partitions (C and D drive) to only 1 (C drive). I really hope to change it back to two partitions for computer safety purpose. I know there probably isn't a way to do it unless I re-format the entire harddrive and start from beginning. My concern is since I don't really have the real XP disc, but the recovery disc from Lenovo, is it safe to format the hard drive? Is there a safe way to reboot from the recovery disc while in the process I can re-partition the harddrive, so I won't damage the "hidden partition" and the recovery function? I haven't upload anything else on the computer yet so I have no file or program to lose.
Also, my hard drive (100G) kind of "shrank" to 86G after the downgrade. Some other posts have talked about the hidden disc and the different calculation method of the hard drive. I guess this is why the hard drive shrank?
Thanks in advance. Any information will be really appreciated.

I would go get something like partedmagic and use it to resize the C:\ partition and create a new D:\ partition. It is similar in use to Partition Magic but free.
By any chance did you make a set of recovery discs for Vista in case you want to go back someday?

  • W520 active partition changed from lenovo 100MB internal to C: with Windows. Can't boot windows.

    Hello!
I moved active system partition in diskmgmt.msc from lenovo 100MB internal partition (actually I'm not sure with the default size of the partition it migth be 1000MB or so I just remember visually digits, but I quess the partition is 100MB) to my C: partition. In result I can not boot up my system. All I can do after turning on notebook is to enter the bios.
I didn't remove lenovo partition I just clicked RMB on my C: partition in diskmgmt.msc and made it active. After reboot I can not load windows any longer.
How can I restore lenovo partition to be active?
    Got Windows 7 64 bit.
Thanks in advance for any ideas
    Kindest Pawel
P.S. I'am writing on Lenovo T400 which doesn't contain that lenovo internal partition, so I'm even more confused what is the purpose of it, maybe for security reasons or so...
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

The "active" partition is where Boot Manager lives. The BIOS goes to the "active" partition to start the boot process, i.e. to launch Boot Manager which may utilize a boot manager menu to select which OS you want to boot to, if you have more than one bootable OS installed in multiple partitions. The boot manager menu also resides in this "active" partition.
If you install Windows7 from scratch on an empty drive, by default it will create a 100MB "system reserved" partition (i.e. the "active" partition, and which does NOT get a drive letter assigned to it when Windows comes up), along with a second large system partition for Windows itself (i.e. what you see as C).  The entire rest of the drive is allocated to C by default, if you don't make any changes at cold install time.
So although it's possible to relocate Boot Manager and the boot manager menu into that large C partition (corresponding to changing that partition to be "active" and also de-activating the small "system reserved" partition which is no longer going to be used to begin the boot process), that is NOT the way the Windows installer builds things. And it's NOT the way Lenovo delivers the factory setup.
The Lenovo "system_reserved" partition from Lenovo is actually about 1.4GB rather than the usual 100MB.  In it Lenovo places other utilities which get utilized during the system recovery process (which also uses the third partition Lenovo puts on the drive, i.e. the "recovery" partition).  This is what allows you to truly recreate the factory-provided original hard drive steup if you need to or want to.
Anyway, it is possible to relocate the Boot Manager files into the C-partition if you had a true retail Windows 7 installation DVD.  You could run "system repair" (rather than "install") three times in succession, and this would accomplish the deed.  There are also utilities like EasyBCD which can relocate Boot Manager into the C-partition.  Both of these processes would then allow you to delete the original "system reserved" partition (either the small 100MB one from MS, or the 1.4GB one from Lenovo... realizing of course that you would then lose the ability to use the "recovery partition" to restore Lenovo factory setup).
Also, if you install Windows 7 as a second bootable OS on a drive where WinXP was already installed, the Win7 installer would NOT create a "system reserved" (active) partition, as the existing WinXP partition is already marked as "active" and is where the current Boot Manager (from WinXP) lives.  The Win7 installer replaces this (in the WinXP system partition itself, which is left untouched as the "active" partition) with the Win7 Boot Manager and menu, and creates a separatte new partition with Win7 in it.  So now you have two bootable OS's, and no small "system reserved", and the WinXP partition contains Win7 Boot Manager and 2-OS boot menu, and is the "active" partition where the BIOS goes to start the boot process.
But honestly, there is really no reason to do any of the above with your W520.  Just stick with what came from Lenovo.  Some partition on the boot drive MUST be marked "active", and that's where Boot Manager and its menu MUST reside.  Who cares whether that's in a small separate partition (which doesn't get a letter anyway), or in C?  There's really very little to gain from changing this, other than a very small amount of additional hard drive space becoming "usable".

Did you check the patch cluster log file for any clues?
    /var/sadm/install_data/Solaris_10_Recommended_Patch_Cluster_log
Once you find the reason for the failure of a bunch of patches, probably the best thing is to re-install the cluster patch {after fixing the errors you found in the patch cluster log}.

  • Portege Z930 - Few questions after downgrade from Win8 to Win7

    Hello,
    I recently purchased Z930 PT234E with Win8 pre-installed. Due to company policy, I needed to downgrade it to Win7 Pro 32Bit (deleted all partitions and created one partition as normally should be done). I downloaded all drivers for OS and installed. And everything started after that;
1- I'm trying to install TOSHIBA Smart Client Manager but returns with warning "+Before you start setting up TOSHIBA Smart Client Manager Client, copy an action masthead file for TOSHIBA Smart Client Manager Server to the setup folder.+" and I don't have that file and installation fails. *Where can I have this file for a succesful installation?*
2- You have +hwsetup+ software preinstalled on Win8 but I couldn't find that sw / driver, even for Win8 at download pages of Toshiba *Where can I get this sw as it gives ability to configure BIOS without waiting for boot?*
3- I see that the battery is +used+ while I left my device on hibernate. I unplug it from power adaptor after %100 charged and hibernate it. But after few hours, when I turn it on, I see it is %91! I susbect it is becuase of "+sleep and charge+" option is enabled from BIOS but I need to wait for next boot. *Any comments?*
4- If I purchase the recovery media online from Toshiba, will this help me to install Win8 as in first boot and create the deleted partitions as in "+*factory state*+". In other wprds, will this recovery media will set my z930 to factory state with OS and partitions. +OK, I assume this media is a DVD and I know that I need to create a bootable USB from this media...No worries :)+ .
Really thanks for reading and comments / replies :)

This file is not known to me and usually something like that should not appear if you would install the software in the right order.
Before you would start to install any of the Toshiba software you have to install Toshiba Value Added package for Windows 7!
Only if this VAP has been installed and notebook rebooted, you could follow with other tools.
    > 2- You have hwsetup software preinstalled on Win8 but I couldn't find that sw / driver, even for Win8 at download pages of Toshiba Where can I get this sw as it gives ability to configure BIOS without waiting for boot?
System driver package which is available for Win 8 is NOT available for Win 7.
Instead of system driver you have to installed VAP!

Any comments? The Sleep & Charge option as well as other options like Wake Up on LAN or keyboard may discharge the battery. So in case you dont want that, disable this in BIOS

  • Can't find iPhoto photos after downgrading to Snow Leopard from Lion

I had my photos on my External Hard Drive being used as a backup for TIme Machine.
After downgrading to Snow Leopard from Lion (my computer was running rediculusly slow likely due to being so close to the minimum requirements), I can not access any of my Time Machine dates prior to the date I downgraded. I have reinstalled Lion to try to access the files that way, but am having issues finding my old photos.
Any help would be appreciated as I've got about 15000 photos of my kids on there.

There are issues with iphoto which changes versions..
I would strongly recommend you do an archive of the TC before you do any more playing.
I presume the TC is the only place you have these photos stored??? So your entire library is hard disk erase from total annilahation.. not good!!
Load a real utility into Lion.. archive is not present on the new version.. why apple why??
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1482
You can then do a full restore to an external drive.. or something fancy..
    Pondini is the saviour here.

There is a specific section on iphoto and its pain.
I strongly suggest you read the entire section from Q14-18 so you actually understand what TM does.

  • BootCamp no longer shows up in Startup after Partition Changes

I recently tried to make a new Partition on my Hard Drive, a exFAT one so both my Windows and my Mac could use it - however that has since caused my BootCamp to disappear from the startup disk selection page.
So I tried to reverse this by deleting the new Partition and now in Disk Utility I can't drag it back completely - there's always a gigabyte (or a bit less) that just won't come back, and because of that (possibly) I can't access BootCamp still.
    Any help would be appreciated!

look in the boot camp forums, there's a huge post about 80 pages long about people who make partition changes, see if someone there will help you
if not, the only other solution is you have to reinstall Windows, OSX or both to properly reclaim all space
officially, you cannot have more than 2 partitions when you boot camp, so having a joint place to store files will not work

  • Can I change from hard cover to soft cover after the book is designed?

Can I change from hard cover to soft cover after the iphoto book is desgned?

Yes,  Just go to the View all pages window and click on the Change Theme button.  There you will be able to switch size and type of cover.  HOWEVER, just to be on the safe side make a copy of the book beforehand by clicking on it and typing Command+D (duplicate).  Sometimes some of the text might be lost.  It's a possiblity but I've never had it happen.

  • Iphone stuck in emergency mode after downgrade from 4.0.2 to 4.0?

iphone stuck in emergency mode after downgrade from 4.0.2 to 4.0?
Upgraded to 4.0.2 last night. Immediately, itunes would no longer detect my iphone. Decided I had to downgrade back to 4.0 again. Learned I cannot do that easily, so i found a .ipsw file of firmware 4.0 online, and downloaded it. Started up my iphone attached to itunes in restore mode, held down shift, and clicked restore button. Successfully restored the 4.0 file I had downloaded.
At the first boot, it was stuck in emergency mode. I even tried to restore the default itunes backup after that, it was still stuck in emergency mode.
Anyone know how i fix this iphone? I have no interest in jailbreaks, i am in a 2 year contract with AT&T.

omg, it just fixed itself! i installed a brand new itunes on my laptop (which has never had itunes app before)
plugged in my iphone, it detected it right away and said "activated"! my phone is working again and has its phone number back.
now i did notice that the 4.0 is indeed slow, so i do want to try going back to 3.1.3 also.

After accepting an update this morning from Mozilla, I now get a second icon on my bottom toolbar when I change from either news to gmail or from gmail to news. I tried restarting my computer but it still does it.

    Thankyou mccashin:
I checked the home page assignment in preferences and found that the errant site had been appended to the normal (google) home page address. Incidentally, I had basically solve the problem within a session by erasing all history related to bbc. Without your fix I would been back to the same error next time I started Firefox from scratch. Thanks again.

  • My iPod touch 5th generation data lost after downgrade from ios 8 to ios 7.1.2

I have just downgraded my iPod touch 5th generation from ios 8 to ios 7.1.2 . after downgrading, all my data (apps, music, document) in the iPod touch were lost, but photos were manage to recover. when I connect to the computer, it show that others in the capacity column used up almost 18 GB of memory. What is in others? Why it used up so much memory?  How can I recover my lost data?

You may not be able to restore the data since when you downgrade from a backup made with a new iOS version data does not transfer.
An "other" larger than about 1 1/2 GB indicates corrupted files.
What is the Other on my iPhone and How to Remove It
What is "Other" and What Can I Do About It?
Next, usually restoring from backup eliminated the corrupted files. However, sometimes restoring to factory settings/new iPod is required.

To restore to factory settings/new iPod see:

  • Problems auto-connecting after sleep & startup (Changed from WPA to WEP)

Okay, I know there have been several issues similar to this, but after two days of sifting through posts, I still can't resolve this.
A few days ago I switched my AirPort network security from WPA to WEP-128. This was required to allow my Nintendo DS to connect to the netwrok, by the way. After the change, two similar, but slightly different problems started:
My 15" PowerBook G4 no longer auto-connects to the network at startup. The network is listed in the drop-down, and connects with no problem when I choose it manually. The computer seems to have no problem re-connecting after waking from sleep, which is odd because...
My other PowerBook, a 12" G4, won't auto-connect at startup AND won't re-connect after sleep. As above, it has no problem connecting using the Keychain once the network is selected from the drop-down.
So far I have tried, on both machines:
    - trashing the system airport prefs
    - deleting and resetting the network's keychain entry
    - repairing the keychain (no errors found)
    - turning off some unneeded power mgt options
    - disconnecting USB peripherals
I have also reloaded the software on both my AirPort Extreme base and my AirPort Express hub, as well as restarting both hubs. I've also made sure that AirPort is at the top of the network connection list.
Both laptops are running 10.4.3 and have all the latest software updates installed.
    What am I missing?
    Thanks.

Both of these replies are helpful, in that they help confirm something I figured out this morning, almost accidentally.
One thing I didn't mention was that during the change from WPA to WEP I changed the network password. Now, I assumed that since the Keychain seemed to be working and I could get on the network manually without needing to enter the password each time, that meant the new password had correctly propagated throughout the system.
So, this morning I go into the Network settings, switch from Automatic to Preferred, select my network, look at the properties, and notice that somehow it has way too many bullets for that to be the correct password. I re-entered the password and that seems to have solved the problem. The new password I had entered somehow didn't make it into this setting. I guess trashing the network prefs, or renaming the network would have had the same effect.

Ok 1st one. The warning restriction message relates to this line in main.cf:
    smtpd_helo_restrictions = permit_sasl_authenticated  permit_mynetworks  check_helo_access hash:/etc/postfix/helo_access  reject_non_fqdn_hostname  reject_invalid_hostname  permit reject_invalid_helo_hostname
The last reject occurs after the single word "permit" and is ignored.
    However, that's not the problem.
I'm not exactly sure what's happening, but this might be a clue.
It would appear that either postfix is not being able to create the socket for private/policy or it's somehow created with the wrong permissions.  You might need to ramp up the debug level to get a better idea.
You could check if it's being created by "netstat -a | grep private/policy" in terminal.
My guess is that it's not being created because there is no setup statement in your master.cf file, but I don't understand why postfix would be looking for it if it isn't set up.  Private/policy I think relates to grey listing.  Maybe gives you a hint.
