Partition does not show as startup disk

I have partitioned my iMac drive and have snow leopard on HD and Yosemite on HD2.  When I go to change to the Yosemite partition (HD2) it does not show in systems available to startup from, even though it used to be there.

Mine doesn't either, or rarely (did in the past) so I just use Windows Boot Camp control panel where both do show up.
If you alter or resize or create a 3rd partition, that also can happen.
Some people use rEFIt boot manager, I never have and so can't comment on its utility, but might want to check it out.

  • XP partition does not show in startup manager

When I boot into the startup manager (hold down alt-key during boot) the XP partition does not show as boot drive. I can boot into XP only through the startup-drive preference pane. This problem is still present after the update to 10.5.2. Any solution besides reformating the drive? Thanks!

    Hi Gulliver,
have a look at rEFIt http://refit.sourceforge.net/ as a Boot-Manager alternative.

  • Hard drive partitions are not showing in Startup DIsk

My hard drive is partitioned into two volumes. HD1 & HD2 (Both 500 MB)
I had Snow Leopard installed on one (HD2) and Mavericks istalled on the other.(HD1)
Both volumes were visible in the Startup Disk option in System Preferences and I could restart from either.
I upgraded the Mavericks istallation to Yosemite - worked OK.
System Disk option showed both HD1 & HD2
Restarted the Mac from HD2 in Snow Leopard mode - no probs.
Then the problem started. I wanted to restart from HD1 in Yosemite mode.
Went in System Preferences to Startup Disk option - HD1 did not show in the window - only HD2 (Snow Leopard) & Network Startup.
Any ideas anyone? (Could be a bug?)

When I restarted using Com+Opt+P+R it went into Yosemite mode with both volumes showing in Startup disk.
Restarting with HD2 (Snow Leopard) gave me the same problem again.

  • Boot Camp partition not showing in startup disk or when holding alt key

I've read countless discussions about similar questions to this one, however, I still haven't been able to find any solution.
I have an old 2006 MacBook that has just been fully updated and reformatted. I'm running OSX 10.7.5 and Boot Camp 4.
I went through the Boot Camp installation from an Windows ISO image in my usb drive, where it succesfully downloaded all files needed, and prompted me to make the partition, after which it restarted and was supposed to take me to the installation manager in the Windows partition. I first got the "No bootable driver" error, to which I read I was supposed to restart the computer, hold the alt key, and choose the boot camp partition. However, it does not show up. I only get Mac and Recover drivers.
I went into the Mac's startup disk, and only the Mac driver is showing, no Boot Camp driver, however, when I go into Disk Utilities, I can see that the BootCamp driver there.
I read somewhere that I should zap pram and reset SMC, which I did with their instructions. It didn't change anything, I still only get the Mac driver and Recovery when hitting the alt key.
Does it have something to do with my MacBook being older? That's the only reason I can think that would not allow me to do this.
Let me know what other info I can give you so that you can please help me!! Thanks in advance!

In last resort I solved my missing BOOTCAMP partition problem using a program called: iPartition from coriolis systems located in the United Kingdom http://www.coriolis-systems.com/iPartition.php it took me a coupleof days to figure out the credit card system they have Hint: use your 9 digit zip code to find your credit card address and call your bank if you have an overseas hold on the card!!!! The program found my missing BOOTCAMP partition and restored it. It did take a couple of e-mails to learn to use their program. Let me know how you turn out!

  • Drive Not Showing In Startup Disk

I have re setup my MacBook Pro, all seems well apart from this little problem. My Mac OS X Partition or Windows Partition shows in startup Disk.
Both Operating Systems do startup fine though.
I have my disk partitioned like this
    Free Space
    Windows 7
    Mac OS X
Its setup in this way so i can use TrueCypt for the Windows side.
Does anyone know how to correct this please?

    Thanks

if you try to verify the disk, dose it report any errors? (open disk utility, click on the Macintosh HD, click on the repair tab, click verify disk.)
If you option boot, dose the computer list both Boot Volumes?
Have you tried blessing the mac hard drive?
ie: "sudo bless -folder /Volumes/Macintosh\ HD/System/Library/CoreServices -bootinfo"
(note the above bless command blesses the Hard Drive with the name "Macintosh HD", if you mac volume has a different name, change to match your hard drive's name.)

  • External Hard drive does not show up on Disk Utility

I have a External Hard Drive that I used to use on a PC.
Recently, I just bought a new Macbook Pro 13'' and want to transfer my documents from the old PC to the Macbook.
My External HD requires a password that you need to type in in order to access the files.
This password thing runs smoothly on my PC, which I can type in my password and get the files. But when I plugged it into the Mac, it didn't recognize it. It only shows the files .exe... and other that can be run by Windows.
So I formatted the HD (I already back up the data), and put it back to the Macbook, I still cannot open it. The system does recognize the connection but when I opened the Disk Utility while still connecting to the HD, the HD does not show on the left column of the Disk Utility.
    Then I'm stuck.
Is there anyone here can tell me what I can/should do?
A girl who spends hours on the internet and still cannot figure out why this sh*t is happening to her.

A lot of external drives use firmware passwords as a protection scheme.  To use them on a mac, you need to unlock the drive on a PC (I've done it in a virutal machine before).  Once unlocked, you can format the drive for use on a mac.  The firmware won't run properly on a mac so your ability to lock the drive from the mac will be gone.  You can still lock it from a PC (I think, never tried to firmware lock a drive with a mac partition on it).

    Hello Abe,
If it's a Digital Audio or earlier, you need to install a Firmware update first...
As explained in "Mac OS X 10.2 Welcome and Install Manuals" and "Mac OS X Welcome and Install Manuals", you may need to update the firmware on your Macintosh computer prior to installing Mac OS X 10.2 or later. The following table lists the firmware updates that are available for Apple products that can update to Mac OS X 10.2 or later.

  • Back button does not work and homepage does not show on startup

My back and forward buttons do not work anymore. they just show grey and I can not click on them.
Also my home page does not show when i start firefox.
I reinstalled firefox 4 and then went back to firefox 3.6.16 and have the same problem in both versions.
Not sure what to do anymore
I just found out that when I open a second window everything works fine in the second window, but it still does not work in the first window.
When I close both windows the same thing happens. The first window my home page does not show up and the back button does not work, but the second window works normal. Including my home page.

Yeah, I am having the same problem (with 4.0 and earlier versions). It is really frustrating to say the least. I never thought I'd say this, but I might have to go back to IE if FF is going to be this useless. I noticed that you have to right click (instead of left click like it works in the real world) on the backwards/forwards buttons, and that is no less frustrating since my mouses backwards/forwards buttons no longer work with this new asinine button set up.

  • WD 320GB in my macbook does not show reliably in Disk Utility

    Hi
I have bought a Western Digital 320GB Scorpio for my C2D MacBook but it does not seem to work as an internal disk in the macbook, when unformatted it does show up (but not every time) but when formated as MacOS Journaled it never shows up in Disk Utility, I've tried using the leopard installer as well as booting from my original 80GB disk plugged into an enclosure. Once the disk is formatted disk utility is very slow at showing the other disks compared to the mere seconds it usually takes. I've tested this disk in a PC and it seemed to work fine formated as NTFS, successfully copied and read some files from it.
What could be wrong with this disk or my macbook?

After unsuccessfully trying two Western Digital Scorpio 2.5" SATA drives (320GB SATA II and 250GB SATA I) in the MacBoook, I have resorted to buying a Seagate Momentus 250GB drive which works perfectly.
I suspect an incompatibility between the Merom-based Core2Duo MacBooks and the WD Scorpio drives. So if you have an early Macbook, I'd steer clear of WD drives.

  • Mac does not start -your startup disk is full

    Hi,
When i turn on my macbook pro 13" (snow leopard) i get the following message:
    "your startup disk is full
you need to make more space available on your startup disk by deleting files"
then i log on my account and the screen remains with the mac pink sky without any items.
i restarted and connected the mac to another mac with firewire a deleted some files to get free space.
I turn on again and i get the same message not being able to start the mac.
Is there any solution for that??
    best regards

Boot from your install disc & run Repair Disk from the utility menu. To use the Install Mac OS X disc, insert the disc, and restart your computer while holding down the C key as it starts up.
    Select your language.
Once on the desktop, select Utility in the menu bar.
    Select Disk Utility.
Select the disk or volume in the list of disks and volumes, and then click First Aid.
    Click Repair Disk.
    Restart your computer when done.
Repair permissions after you reach the desktop-http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25751

  • Second HDD on my HP Envy 17 j013cl is not recognized. It does not show up in Disk Management.

I'm trying to install a second HDD (Western Digital Blue, 1 tb). I just purhcased the caddy & cable that works with my HP Envy 17 j013cl model. Everything looks good, but the computer does not recognized the hard drive. The HDD definitely works becasue I can use the SATA to USB cable to access the drive and put files in it. The format is in NTFS.
What are your recommendations?? Is the second port broken?

    Thanks for the reply.
I got it from amazon, but the title says it is from Newmodeus as well:

  • External Hard drive "not readable", does not show up in Disk Warrior either. Help me, please!

I have a 500gb G Drive Slim that is almost brand new. I accidentally pulled the cord out when it was connected, and now when I try to open it, it says "not readable by this computer." This is what I see when I go into disc utility:
I called G Drive, and they told me to download Disk Warrior 4. I did, and this is what I see when I open it:
My hard drive doesn't show up...i'm not sure if i'm doing something wrong but I just paid $100 dollars for this and I'd really like some help. I read the manual and it wasn't helpful at all.
    Please help me!

Make sure it's format is Mac OS Extended (Journeled).
To check it's format, plug in the External HDD and search Disk Utility in the spotlight. Click the External HDD and go to the Partition tab. If it isn't Mac OS Extended change it and format it.
You shouldn't need any of these external applications to use it. I have one and use it like a flash drive.

  • Bootcamp not showing as startup disk?!

I am trying to install windows on my Macbook pro (Mid 2011) and I have partitioned the disk, made an install disk (USB Stick) and restarted my computer after choosing the option to install Windows in bootcamp. I get a black screen with "No bootable device found -- insert boot disk and press any key. Well, that is also an issue. If I hold down alt while starting up, I only get the 2 options of Mac OSX and Recovery. No Windows like all the videos I've watched have showed it. Aparently there should be a yellow symbol as a third option. I really need some help with this.

If you have/had a built in DVD drive you have to use that or Google USB boot camp hack, no other way will work
