Partition Ext HDD without losing the data already on the disc

I have an early G5 iMac 80gb HDD, Macbook and a Macmini
I have finally managed to get them all running the same version of ilife(08) and thought it was time to get them all running from the same hymn sheet...
I have been using a 500gb Ext HDD (iphoto, itunes etc) so i have filled around 300GB so far, the problem is I want to move my iMovie events/projects to the ext HDD to. I have followed the steps to move the files but I get a dialogue box telling me my drive isn't compatible with imovie. (iMovie 08)
When I check the Ext HDD format (using <apple>+i it tells me the format is appleshare...
So after that intro..... can I partition this drive and set aside say 100GB (178GB free) without losing the data on the drive??
Thank you for reading
Chris

Appleshare? That is not a format.
It must be formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled) if not already. Reformatting will delete everything on the disk.

  • Syncing iPad without losing purchased content already on the iPad

Rookie question probably, but I've been downloading content in different forms on my iPad for months and I finally want to sync the device with the iTunes on my MacBook Air. When I try to do this, I get a message warning me that any content on my iPad will be deleted as a result of the sync. That's when I hit "cancel". I've had iPhones for years, been syncing them and purchasing content either on the iPhone or the laptop, and this has never been an issue. I don't remember doing anything special with respect to iTunes settings in the case of my iPhone, so what do I do for the iPad? I've backed it up to the iCloud, but I can't say I understand whether iCloud backups are connected to iTunes syncing.

You need to transfer the purchase that you have been making on the iPad into iTunes before you sync. Turn off auto sync first.
iTunes>Preferences>Devices, check the box at the bottom that will prevent the iPad from auto syncing. Click OK. Quit iTunes.
Connect the iPad to the computer and launch iTunes. Right click on the iPad name on the left side under the devices heading - then select - Transfer Purchases. That will put all of the stuff that you have been downloading for months into iTunes. Right click on the iPad name again - select Backup. (More about his at the end.)
Now go into each tab in iTunes, Info, Apps, Music, Photos, Movies - whatever you want to sync. Select all of the content that you want on the iPad. Make sure that all of the headings are checked - Sync Apps, Sync Music, etc. After you have finished making your selections, click on Apply in the lower right corner of iTunes.
You can turn auto sync on again when you are done if that is how you want to sync.
iCloud backups are separate from iTunes backups. You can use both or either. You can make the choice to backup in iTunes in the Info Pane of iTunes when the iPad is connected to the MBA and with iTunes running and the iPad selected. I wanted you to have a backup in iTunes if you are going to sync with iTunes.

  • I want to transfer new content from iTunes to my iphone without losing what is already on my phone. Help!

I want to transfer new content from iTunes to my iPhone without losing what is already on the phone. On the old iTunes I could drag and drop only the items I wanted on the phone.  On this new version, all I can figure out to do is sync, which is going to remove the songs that are already on the phone. There has to be another way.

The film would have to be in itunes on your computer.
You would sync it like you do everything else.

  • Software that can slice my SL HDD without losing data

My "old(ish)" Snow Leopard HDD crashed & I reinstalled SL on a new 1.5TB HDD. Unfortunately, I only sliced it into 2 partitions - 600GB / 900GB. Now, I can see that I could really use a 3rd partition.
Can anyone suggest (hopefully free?) software that wll allow me to slice/repartition my HDD without losing the data that's already there?

Never mind. I see that Disk Utility can now do that.

  • Is it possible to partition my hd without losing data for dual boot?

i have 10.6.2 as my main OS right now but want to create a separate partition and put 10.5 on it, can i do this without losing my data on snowleopard?

Sure. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder. Select the topmost entry for your hard drive - mfgr.'s ID and drive size - then click on the Partition tab in the DU main window. You should see a partition window surrounded in a light blue rectangle. At the bottom is a sizing gadget. Select it and push up to reduce the size of the existing partition enough for the size of the new partition you desire. Do not reduce it too much or you may not have enough space for your existing partition. The click on the [+] button to add a new partition in the space you've created. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed. It will take a little while so be patient. When it is completed you now have the new volume mounted on your Desktop.

  • How do I upgrade to snow leopard and then restore my files from my time machine HDD backup...without losing any data or reinstalling leopard (10.5)?

How do I upgrade to snow leopard (from leopard 10.5) and then restore my files from my time machine HDD backup...without losing any data or reinstalling leopard (10.5)?

Hello, it's great you have a backup, but 10.6 should just Install 10.6 system files over the top of 10.5 system files, & leave all your data intact on the drive.

I started with one itunes account for my iphone and ipad, and now have a second ipad linked to the same itunes.  Can I set up a new itunes account for one ipad without losing what has already been downloaded on it?  I want to stop my husbands downloads appearing on my ipad, and vice versa.

A much simpler solution would be to go into Settings > Store and turn off Automatic Downloads

I have seen the Apple webpage suggesting the "five R's" (including restore).  Before doing anything, I want to be sure that restoring or any other action is not going to delete or risk my data.
I would be very grateful if anyone can suggest a fix for this problem, in a way that will not risk my data.
    Thanks in advance!

Did you try a hard reset with the iPod still connected to your PC?  Have you tried multiple USB ports, preferably high powered USB 2.0 ports?
To do a hard reset, first make sure the hold switch is in the Off position, then press and hold both the Select (Center) and Menu buttons together long enough for the Apple logo to appear.
Have you also worked through each and every single troubleshooting suggestion in this Apple support document?

  • My question is to anyone that can help..I downloaded 2-300 photos on my iPad and want to reload a few hundred more. The last time I did this I lost the first batch of photos I loaded a week before. How do I just add without losing what is already on iPad?

You need to add the new photos to the ones that are currently on the iPad and (re-)sync them all - only the most recent photo sync remains on the iPad, not including photos in a subsequent sync is how you delete them from the iPad (as you've found out).
You can use third-party apps such as Simple Transfer which can copy photos to the Photos app via your wifi network, but they will only go into the Saved Photos/Camera Roll album, and not into a 'proper' album.

  • How do you stop an update on Pages without losing your data?

how do you stop an update on Pages without losing your data? i've connected my ipad to my phone's internet network through tethering. it's been ages already. but Pages is still not fully updated and i just wanna stop it anyway without losing my work inside...can anyone please shed light on this? i'd be absolutely certainty definitely grateful!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You can try pausing the download by tapping on the Pages icon, but you may not be able to use Pages until the update completes. I don't know that for sure, but I wouldn't want to take the chance on corrupting the app and maybe the files.

  • Can I upgrade from snow leopard to mountain lion without losing my data?

Have finished an upgrade to snow leopard without losing any data on each of 9 MacBook Pros so far.  (Have 9 more to go) Can I do the mountain lion upgrade on them without losing data or must I back up the detritus of 4 years use by teachers who despite all pleas have never backed up their documents?  Would appreciate a swift reply as everyone wants their mbp's back in their hands on Monday morning. My thanks in advance to any gurus who care to reply as my local gurus seem to have fled the ashram for the weekend.

Installing a new version of OS X should not lead to any data loss. Of course, it's best to have a backup if anything 'goes wrong' but simply isntalling the new OS shouldn't damage any data.

Absolutely sure.. There is no connection at all.. reset is only the router side of the TC.
For the hard disk to be erased you need to access the airport utility disk page.. request erase and confirm the operation.
    2) I can access to time capsule by ethernet but I am not able to input the corret setting by myself
    Thank you again
I am uncertain why if you have access you cannot change settings.. but that is why you reset things so any of those problems should be fixed.
Here is the Apple info on reset.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3728
And here is the quote from the horse's mouth so to speak.
Factory default reset: Perform this reset if you wish to repurpose the AirPort Base Station or Time Capsule and want to remove all personal profiles and settings first. This reset resets the device to its state when you first purchased it. Data stored on internal or external hard drives connected to the device will not be erased. If you choose, you may manually erase the hard drive using AirPort Utility.

I got a new computer and need to sync my iPhone and ipad on it, how do i do that without losing all data. I need help ASAP!

If you still have the old computer see: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4527
If you don't have your old computer, but you made regular backups of it, restore the most recent backup using the backup software that you used to make the backup. You will have to read the instructions for it.
If you don't have your old computer and you did not back it up regularly see: Syncing to a "New" Computer or replacing a "crashed" Hard Drive
