Partition, games, and external disk

We've just learned that for optimal use, the partition size for Windows under Boot Camp should be 32 and no more.
Our children will be using Boot Camp for heavy PC games that don't work well under Parallels. Is it possible to partition the disk at a maximum of 32 and install the games on an external disk and play them from there, under Boot Camp?
Thanks!
susan

"Is it possible to partition the disk at a maximum of 32"
Sure .. this is possible, either by useing Boot Camp, or by some other means.
"install the games on an external disk and play them from there, under Boot Camp?"
This would probably VERY MUCH depend on the requirements of the game? Windows should allow you to install anywhere, but the game itself may NEED to be installed at a specific place/directory/maybe even have to be installed on drive C.

  • Sizing Backup, Bootable and Storage partitions on an External Disk

I have iMac G5, 2 GB RAM, 1 TB HD with one partition currently holding about 140 GB, and a TB external disk. I want to use the external disk for three purposes: Bootable Partition, Time Machine Backup, Miscellaneous Storage.
Apple advises matching the capacity of the Time Machine backup to that of the volume being backed up. My inclination is to limit the Backup volume to 500 GB, see how that works out and re-evaluate as HD use increases.
Q1. As I understand, the bootable partition would be, at the minimum, a duplicate of all OS X (Leopard in the case of G5s) system and application software.
Q2. Should it also include 3rd party apps? (yes?)
Q3. Should it be a pristine installation that is independently kept up to date with all upgrades, but essentially unused unless an emergency arises? (yes?) Or is it okay to somehow sync it with my HD content? (this could copy a problem to just where you don't want it to be?)
Since I will be using Time Machine to backup my HD, it does not seem that all the data files (e.g. iTunes Library) need to be included in the bootable partition.
Q4. What are the correct choices for what goes into the bootable partition, including 3rd party apps and data?
Q5. What process should be used for updating this software? Independent, parallel updates? (yes?)
Q6. Are there any files that should be duplicated in this partition; for example, keychains are something you need - or would you get these from Time Machine too?
Q7. Since the Time Machine backup resides on the same disk, it is possible to restore needed files from there. When Time Machine restores the system, does it put everything into the boot partition? (yes?)
Q8. If so, since Disk Utility allows dynamic re-partitioning, I could use a limited space for the bootable partition and then re-allocate more space to it later if I wanted to run a fully restored version of the system off the external disk? (yes?)
Q9. Does it make sense to separate the Miscellaneous Storage into a separate partition? (yes?) Or should should I use just one partition to hold the bootable stuff and the miscellaneous stuff? (no?)

That should be plenty, depending on how the 140 GB will grow. Our "rule of thumb" is, TM needs 2-3 times the space of the data it's backing-up. See #1 in the Frequently Asked Questions *User Tip,* also at the top of this forum.
Q1. As I understand, the bootable partition would be, at the minimum, a duplicate of all OS X (Leopard in the case of G5s) system and application software.
That depends on what you're trying to do, and how much space you have, but usually a bootable clone contains everything. Thus it's partition should be a minimum of 120% of the data on (or anticipated to be on) your internal HD.
Think for a moment about why you want two separate, independent backups. The safest route is to have them on separate disks, so you're protected against either disk failing (and they all do, sooner or later). For that reason, consider getting another disk for the clone. If you get a portable one, you can take it to a secure off-site location, so you're also protected against fire, flood, theft, and direct lightning strike on your power lines. Some folks get a pair of them; use one for a week or so, then take it off-site and swap with the other one.
The other reason to have two backups is to protect you against a problem with one app or drive; thus if your TM backups somehow get corrupted, you still have the clone, and vice-versa.
In both cases, your best bet is to let both apps back up nearly everything. Sometimes there's a good reason to omit some things; see #11 in the FAQ Tip for more detail. Also, if you're running Windoze via virtualization software, you likely do not want to back it up with Time Machine. See #9 in the FAQ Tip.
Q5. What process should be used for updating this software? Independent, parallel updates? (yes?)
I use CarbonCopyCloner, in addition to full Time Machine backups; SuperDuper is similar. Both are reliable. CCC is donationware, SD has a free version, but you'll need the paid one (about $30) to do automatic scheduling and updates (vs. a full replacement). Both are easily found via Google.
Q7. Since the Time Machine backup resides on the same disk, it is possible to restore needed files from there. When Time Machine restores the system, does it put everything into the boot partition? (yes?)
    You select the destination disk/partition.
Q8. If so, since Disk Utility allows dynamic re-partitioning, I could use a limited space for the bootable partition and then re-allocate more space to it later if I wanted to run a fully restored version of the system off the external disk? (yes?)
Yes, but be careful. You can only resize a partition by dragging the bottom in the diagram up or down; you can't move the top. Thus to expand a partition, you have to delete the one below it.
Q9. Does it make sense to separate the Miscellaneous Storage into a separate partition? (yes?) Or should should I use just one partition to hold the bootable stuff and the miscellaneous stuff? (no?)
They should each be separate. See #3 in the FAQ about the TM partition; and you'll also want the clone to be on it's own partition.
Since you have a lot of room on the external, I'd recommend putting the TM partition first, and the most-easily replaced partition(s) last.
You might want to use the Restore option of Disk Utility to make a copy of your Install disc in a small partition on the external (towards the end). It's much faster and easier to boot from that instead of trying to find your Install disc, when you need to. I'd also recommend making a duplicate of that disk and keeping it in a secure off-site location.

  • Macbook Air/Pro difficult to connect to Airport Extreme and external disk

For some unclear reason my MacBook Pro and Air both have difficulty connecting to the Airport Extreme external disk after waking up from sleep. I can't even see the AE in the Airport utility. If I toggle wifi on/off several times it shows up and works. What is odd is that I can always connect with my PC and on the Bootcamp partition of the Macbook Air in Windows 8.1. I'm using OS 10.10, the most recent update and have a latest model AE running updated firmware. Any ideas?

Probably Yosemite issues.  I have issues seeing Airports as well.  Like you toggling the wifi fixes it.  Hopefully 10.10.2 will solve the problem.

  • Just installed 10.6.3 on MacBook Pro and external disks cannot be seen by OS.  Help

i installed 10.6.3 on my 17" MacBook Pro (updating from 10.5.8).  All my external disk drives which had all been visible to the system and accessible before the update no longer were visible to the OS. Not in the sidebar and not in the disk utility. After checking all connections etc. many reboots, resetting the pram i still am unable to see or access these disks.
From there i updated to 10.6.8 but exactly the same results. i'm not sure where to go from here. i have 4 externals on 2 different  usb routers and 1 external on a firewire router.
I'm considering removing the routers and trying each drive separately and directly connected to the laptop.
And of course, i'm short of time.
Anyone with similar problems and/or solutions?

You mean USB HUBs, correct? Not routers.
Yes remove the HUBs and try the drives connected directly to the computer.

The worse was lion ERASING the fat of all external 1Tb Fat32 formated e-Sata drives, then freeze and grey screen with critical error.
No more access to the disk after need to reformat them !!! Using a Tempo E4S pci-e card
It was the that with EVERY Fat32 e-sata 1Tb drives I tryed ... Frightening ! hopefully it was some extra backup disks !!!
plus at least one freez a day when I do access external HFS+ e-sata drive USB3 drives...

    really ennoying

Got the exact same problem, and I also did this operation many times before, from 500Gb to 750Gb, and then from 750Gb to 1 Gb. Not My HD got a little such complaining about bad sectors when in windows bootcamp, but still runs fine though.
So I bought a new 1Gb drive exactly same drive as the one thats getting sick. I did the clone thing, with super duper, CCC, DU, but no matter it will not boot when i move the new drive inside the macbook…….**** thing exuse me, but wasted so much time.
Now I get this strange feeling that something must have changed in the macbook itself. Just wondering if this could be a EFI "mac bios" prevention thing, they made just to sell more new computers, when you can't improve or fix your old one.
If so, then its pretty scary. If not then I simply can't figure out why this suddenly becomes a problem for so many people, as I see so many posts about this!!

  • AirPort Extreme, TimeMachine and external disks

    Hi folks,
Have done some searching on this, but unfortunately haven't been able to answer my question, so over you to kind people to try and help me if at all possible!
I have purchased an AirPort Extreme (802.11n) which works fine. Also purchased a 1TB external hard disk for backup/TimeMachine purposes. If I connect the external USB drive directly to my MacBook, TimeMachine will do its thing without any problem.
However, if I plug the external disk into the AirPort Extreme, although it is visible to the AirPort utility, TimeMachine cannot see the disk at all.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks in advance.
    *AirPort Utility version 7.3.2*
    *Leopard 10.5.6*

Time Machine backups to AirDisks (e.g. USB HDD attached to Extreme) is unsupported, but has been successful by some. As well, once you decide to move your TM backups to an AirDisk, you cannot continue backing up to your previous TM backup. The format it saves to vs. a local HDD is different. The folder structure you see becomes a sparsebundle/disk image via the AirDisk.

  • Mac Mini has crashed - Disk Warrior and External Hard Drive Question.

I have Mac Mini that has crashed.  I purchased Disk Warrior and was able to boot from the CD.  Disk Warrior allowed me to see my files again but there is no way I can move them back onto my hard drive.  I cannot grab them.  Before I go into specifics....If I purchase an external hard drive and try to hook it up to my Mac Mini, will I be able move these files to this new external hard drive?  Is this a possibility?
Or will my new external hard drive need to go through a set up phase - which might be impossible since hard drive I'm trying to take the files from is technically dead?
Sorry - I'm a novice at these things.

Hello, no apologies needed for being a novice, great you asked!
YES, depends where you buy the Drive, it may need Formatting first to Mac OS Extended...
    How to format your disks...
    http://www.kenstone.net/fcp_homepage/partitioning_tiger.html
(To Install OSX on an IntelMac the Drive it needs the GUID Partitioning scheme mentioned at the bottom.)
Thanks to Pondini, Formatting,  Partitioning, Verifying,  and  Repairing  Disks...
    http://Pondini.org/OSX/DU.html
These generally come Mac Ready, & get Firewire if you have a Firewire port, much faster...
    http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/firewire/1394/USB/EliteAL/eSATA_FW800_FW400_USB
Then in DiskWarrior, hold Option or alt key when selecting Internal to repair, that will do the best job of Scavenging the directory & provide a whole new Drive icon to copy or clone your info over to the external drive.

  • Backup to external disk with disk utility

    Hello,
I'm looking to back up a iMac with 10.3.9 to an external usb disk drive. Unfortunately, I'm not having much success. I boot to the install disk, then pick "disk utility", and go to the restore page. Then I drag my Mac HD on the source, which works fine, but I'm not able to get the destination correct. Here's the deal with the disk though. I have three partitions on it. I have a 1st partition which is fat32; the second is ext3 where I have Ubuntu; the 3rd is a linux swap partition.
I was hoping that I could save to the fat32 partition without clobbering the data there, but I wasn't even able to try it, because Disk Utility came back with an "error 19". I'm not sure what that is, but I assumed that Disk Utility doesn't play with fat32. So I then used Gparted to create an empty 4th partition with HFS+ format. I thought that that would work, but while Disk Utility "sees" that partition (it shows up on the left side, although without the correct partition name), it will not let me drag it to the restore->destination box.
So, couple of questions. Does anyone know if:
    1) Does the destination of the Disk Utility backup have to be the first partition on the external disk?
    2) Does the destination partition have to be HFS+?
    Thanks.

I've got 3 partitions on a 500gb external drive plus the one internal hard drive on my iBook. I always make sure I keep a backup of both Leopard and Panther OSX. So if I have Panther on the internal HD then I have only one copy of Panther and two leopard copies on the externa HD. The mac doesn't seem to care what order the partitions are in since it treats each partition as a separate drive.
Yes, the destination has to be hfs+ but you can get disktuil to format the partition which will only format that partition and will not affect any other partition on the drive. Be careful to select the proper partition!
The recommended procedure is to format as journalled hfs+ (diskutil can do this) because diskutil will sometimes make an unbootable backup if you only erase the partition instead of formatting the paritition. That was the mistake I made and found the problem listed in carbon copy cloner's files. The problem is that for some reason, firewire external drives are not always bootable because of the issue OSX has with those types of drives. The only solution was to format the partition as hfs+ and try restoring from your boot drive to the newly formatted hfs+ partition. Worked for me.
As far as I know, Panther OS can't format a drive/partition as a windows drive. Leopard OSX will though and has no issues with formatting flashdrives or any other drives or partitions as microsoft windows DOS format. It can also write/read from windows formatted drives but Panther OSX can't as far as I know.
Oops. I guess I'm wrong. This from the diskutil help files...
You can use Disk Utility to format an *entire disk* in Windows (MS-DOS) format, but *you cannot format a single disk partition in Windows format.*
WARNING: To prepare a disk in Windows format, you must erase the entire disk. Be sure to copy all the information on that disk before you erase it.

  • External disk - repair permissions

It seems the permissions on my HD need to be repaired.
Unfortunately I have lost the Repair disk during an international move.
I still have the install disk - so I tried to install OS 10.6 onto an external drive. The intention was to boot from the external drive and repair permisions on the MacBook HD.
The installation kept showing the external disk as having not been ejected correctly, which is not correct. Anyway, I erased all partitions on this external disk, using Disk Utility, did a 7 pass erase, and then also ran the repair disk function too; Disk Utilityshowed that there were no issues with this external disk. However, I still got the same result from the OS installation program, that the external disk had not been ejected correctly. I went around in the circle a number of times before giving up.
Now I am at a loss how to make the external boot disk to repair permisions on the computer HD.
I know in the distant past it was possible to just copy the System folder to an external drive and it would boot; but I was told this no longer works.
Any get around this issue or a solution would be most welcome.
    Thank you

It seems that there is a theory that you don't need to repair permissions anymore.
Correct.  It is unnecessary and doen't repair your permissions anyway.
About Disk Utility's Repair Disk Permissions feature
When files loose their connection with the program that created them is one example why permisions need to be repaired.
No, that is an indication that Launch Services has got corrupted or confused and maybe it needs rebuilding.  Repair permissions does nothing to the launch services data base.
The last time I had issues was 18 months ago and running repair disk permissions solved all the instability problems; I don't think I was dillusional about this; so as I have warnings to repair disk permissions and instability issues I what I want to repair the permissions; that is irrespective of any currrent thought that this isn't necessary.
You believe what you want.  Read the link about repairing permissions and what it does.
The repair disk has a minimal system and disk utilities on it that allows you to boot from the DVD and repair the internal HD. In the early days you could just drag a minimal of certain files from the system onto a flopy or latter a CD together with disk repair and it would do the job. I lost my repair disk, so I want to create a system on an external drive which together with Disk Utility so I can repair the permissions. Or even make a DVD with a minimum system and disk utilities.
There is no such thing as a "repair disk".   You have installer dvd's that came with your hardware or the recovery partition that is part of Lion.  You boot it and run Disk Utility to verify/repair, and yes, if you insist, repair permissions.  Or you boot from another bootable disk and use its Disk Utilities to repair/verify your drives from there.  That is because you cannot repair the drive you are currently booted from.
You can't repair permissions from the HD that has issues, ("If necessary (which is seldom), permissions should be repaired from the selfsame disk.') well at least up to OS10.6, you need an external system to do this, i.e. external HD or DVD. Apple genius bars use external drives to do this; being in Spain there is only one of those some 3+ hours away; a final option if I can't get success.
I basically just said this immediately above.
As I mentioned when I tried to install OS10.6 onto an external drive I had issues doing this, as covered in my initial email.
First a 7-pass erase it a complete waste of time when a simple erase will do.  Second I think the you are getting "disk ejected improperly" because you may have one of those enclosures that has a tendency to go off line on its own, which of course is indeed ejecting the disk incorrectly.  I'm guessing on this last point of course but it seems reasonable to me.
