Partition HD ? Snow Leopard and Mountain Lion
Hi all,
I have a 2009 MacBook Pro - was running OSX 10.6 Snow Leopard - partitioned HD and installed Mountain Lion on the second partition. Is there a way to delete the Mountain Lion partition and "clone" or move my Snow Leopard OS to the second partition and keep it as OSX 10.6 whilst upgrading the first partition to OS 10.8 Mountain Lion? I hope this makes sense. Thank you in advance for any help.

I do not believe that "cloning" of Snow Leopard is available. Only a full initial installation following these instructions. You could then reinstall your needed applications.
I strongly recommend that you NEVER keep data in a virtualized environment. Use the Home Folder or AFP File Sharing to access your data files, modify them and then store them back in the real environment.

If you want to get rid of Windows and the BC partition use the Boot Camp assistant program to remove the Win/BC partition. Don't do it manually with Disk Utility Use the BC A program. -

Yes as I said before. If your model Mac came with Snow Leopard and you are now running Mt Lion and have Windows installed in a Boot Camp Partition all you have to do is make the Mt Lion partition smaller, take the free space and make it another Mac partition and you should be able to install Snow Leopard into that partition.
I have Snow Leopard, Lion and Mt Lion installed on my MBP. No Windows in a Boot Camp partition because I run Windows XP in a Virtual Machine on both Lion and Mt Lion. -
Install boot camp snow leopard and mountain lion
Is it possible to install boot camp on a 2009 Mac Pro to run both Snow Leopard and Mountain Lion? The startup drive is already partitioned. I need to run two different versions of Final Cut Studio (and all the accompanying apps) and this seems the best way to keep them segregated. I know that I can run them both in Snow Leopard, but I have two different sets of Motion templates which need to be accessed.

Just to confirm assumptions before I do this, sorry, I'm an engineer.
1. The startup drive is partitioned already.
2. Partition (1) contains Snow Leopard and a user account.
3. Partition (2) currently contains a media library, does not have an OS on it, and has 232 GB free.
4. I will install Mountain Lion on partition 2 using the dmg downloaded from the app store.
5. That partition will then become the startup drive when using mountain lion.
6. Partition 2 will have its own user account, applications, etc.
Almost forgot. Do I need to erase and install on that partition or can I simply install? After this I owe you a beer. -
Can I dual boot Snow Leopard and Mountain Lion on one hard drive?
I want to make a new partition and be able to boot to either OS. Is this possible, if so, how? I would think just make a new partition and install the dmg file to that new partition.
@jimmyk11: AppleCare has actually informed me that "No - this MacBooPro9,1 cannot boot Snow Leopard".
It originally came with lion 10.7.4 installed. I have since upgraded to Mountain Lion 10.8 and (today, after a week or so of ML) I reverted to Lion 10.7.4. But now I find I can no longer boot into Lion 10.7.4 from my external FW800 drive (for troubleshooting and housekeeping). So it looks as if the "boot problems" are not confined to Snow Leopard 10.6.8.
Interestingly, I can use this same external drive to boot my iMac (10.7.4) and my older MBP8,3 (10.8) into 10.7.4 - but not the newer MBP9,1.
The MBP9,1 with Lion and Mountain Lion is turning into a disaster when it comes to external booting. If I could, I'd demand a return and a refund. After bottle-feeding Lion for a year, 10.7.4 seems basically stable and can still boot into Snow Leopard and Lion from my external drives if needed. But now I see I have a worse problem: Crippled Hardware. I suspect this bug needs a firmware update - if it is fixable at all. -
I have been making back ups on a Seagate Back up plus drive on a macbook pro running on Mountain lion. Sadly the mac was stolen and all I had was the seagate back up. I tried opening it on my old iMac running on snow leopard and after several visits to this forum managed to open it. The data was safe and sound. Now I have received a hand me down macbook pro which runs on osx 10.9.5. I'm assuming there is a compatability issue as the drive does not come on at all when I hook it up to the usb port. I checked the seagate drive once again on the imac and its light came on on that system. Then I suspected there may be a problem with this macbook pro usb port. But it seemed to work fine when i hooked my camera cord into it. Is it that I must reinstall mavericks. In which case how do I back up before reformatting or reinstalling. BTW I did the command+ R thingy and repaired my internal Hard disc which was showing errors. What do I do next, your help is most appreciated if you have had a similar problem.
Your 2010 MBP would be able to handle Yosemite, but I would strongly suggest that you get the current problem sorted out before trying to upgrade to Yosemite. I'd also recommend another backup that isn't created by Time Machine if you are thinking of upgrading. SuperDuper and CarbonCopyCloner can make bootable clones of hard drives. If you clone your existing system to a fresh external drive, you would be able to boot from that drive and recover quickly in the event that your Yosemite upgrade didn't work out. Time Machine backups are not 100% reliable.
It's possible that, if your internal HD is the one that shipped with your MBP in 2010, it may be failing. If it keeps needing repairs, that is probably a sign that it is approaching the end of its useful life.
Have you run Disk Utility's Repair tool on the external drive as well?
I mentioned the hub because some people have reported here that attaching their USB 3 drives through a USB 2 hub solved some disconnection problems. A good-quality powered USB 2 hub won't cost much.
My most recent brush with random disconnections involved a nice new OWC drive enclosure. I used the cable that came with the drive, but the drive kept disconnecting. Using a different cable solved the problem. You wouldn't expect that what appeared to be a high quality cable would be a problem straight out of the box, but it was. -
XServe with Snow Leopard and Mountain Lion Clients
Okay, bare with me, as I'm fairly new to the whole Mac Server world. I have learned a whole lot over the last year and I've been able to completely manage our 60 Snow Leopard Clients on our XServe.
Last year, I came into an existing setup with ~60 clients running Snow Leopard and an XServe running on Snow Leopard. We utilize Server Admin and Workgroup Manager to manage our user accounts and our clients. We have over 300 users and utilize Portable Home Folders with our accounts.
Over the last year, I've learned a whole lot about managing the system that is already setup. I've made quite a few preferences and file structure changes utilizing Server Admin and Workgroup Manager. After getting new hard drives in three machines, I learned how to re-image them and get them set back up with our Workgroup Manager. I learn things pretty quickly and have a pretty high technology aptitude.
So, here is the predictament I'm in now...our county just purchased 31 new Macs to add to our network. These are running Mountain Lion.
I have a few questions, and I'm not exactly sure where this post should have been. I think the major questions/issues I face right now include:
Will I be able to manage the Mountain Lion clients utilizing our existing server and Workgroup Manager?
We need our server to work seemlessly with the 31 Mountain Lion clients and the 60 Snow Leopard Clients.
Once I get one machine setup correctly, I need to create an image of it so that I can then utilize this image on the other 30 machines.
How do I create an image and then deploy it?
Do I complete this step before or after I have setup the first client with Workgroup Manager?
Also, am I missing something? I just want to make sure I'm not missing anything important in regards to getting these new workstations setup on our network.

But the Mac App Store doesn't allow you to download software, which you originally bought on DVD. Logic Studio is/was only available on DVDs, while Logic Pro, MainStage and Compressor are available in the Mac App Store as inidivdual applications. -
IP Address Conflicts - iMac and Airport Express, Snow Leopard and Mountain Lion
In our home we have an iMac, two Mac notebooks, an iPad, an Apple TV and a Sony Playstation that all use wi-fi. I have a recurring problem. When several devices are connected to the Internet through Airport Extreme (wi-fi) downloads really slow down. Since the Airport Extreme is connected directly to a Motorola cable modem that also has wi-fi, I often shift my iMac wi-fi connection to the Motorola cable modem to speed up the Internet. Lately I have been getting an IP address conflict message in a pop-up box when I shift to the cable modem wi-fi. The system preference shows the IP address automatically assigned via DCHP. It also offers the option of DHCP plus manual.
I am now using Snow Leopard and intend to upgrade to Mountain Lion.
How can I resolve the conflict? Or, should I consider some other wifi network configuration? Is the upgrade to Mountain Lion likely to resolve the problem or make it worse? Can I use the DHCP plus manual to manually assign an IP address to the iMac to resolve the IP address conflict, and, if so, what it the procedure?Is the DHCP assignment being done by your cable modem or your AirPort Extreme?
What is the exact text of the conlict message, and where does it pop up?
If your cable modem and your AirPort Extreme are both running DHCP servers for the same subnet (which they really should not be allowed to do), they must be set to assign addresses from disjoint pools. -
Macbook Pro i7 on Snow Leopard and Mountain Lion crashes randomly!!
Hi, i been notice this issue a few months ago. The Crashes starts to appear using Adobe Photoshop CS4 while I use the transform tool my Mac start crashing and getting reboot, after several days having this issue my Mac start to crash randomly using Chrome, Photoshop, or just using it normally, sometimes I turn it on and it reboot itself with a new crash all this happens on Snow Leopard so i try to update to Mountain Lion and i get it but now im getting again the crashes, the report i try to read i think is something with my Nvidia Adapter. You might be able to resolve the problem by reinstalling OS X. Try that first, if you haven't done so already. Otherwise, you may be covered by this program:

Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine tested. The routine hardware diagnostics used by service providers may not detect the fault. There is a specific test for this issue.
Print the first page of the panic report, and the support page linked above, and bring them with you.
Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to an empty drive from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.
*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.
You may be able to stop the panics by disabling automatic graphics switching in the Energy Saver preference pane, but that's not a solution. -

I have a late 2009 iMac with a 1tb hard drive running Snow Leopard. Can I partion the hard drive and upgrade to Mountain Lion on one part and keep Snow Leopard on the other? If not, can I partition my external back-up drive that I use for Time Machine to do the same thing?

Upgrade from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion erase my Windows partition?
Dear all,
I know some one might have asked it but I just wanna re-confirm.
Would the upgrade from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion erase my Windows partition? I am currently using Bootcamp on my Macbook Pro (Late 2010 Version) and I do not have parallel desktop. I asked the same question when Lion was released, but HK Apple Store said YES and Melbourne Apple Store said no. I am a bit confused now.

I am contemplating upgrading my OS from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion. Currently, I don't have ICloud available on my computer. I also keep getting messages to upgrade my IPhoto to '11 version as well as Pages. I know, I'm behind, but my theory is if it isn't broke don't mess with it.
My concern is I don't want to lose my pictures and YES, I have backed up with Time Machine to an external hard drive. (I just hope that's good enough). IF I upgrade to start using ML OS, will I need to restore anything from my external hard drive or will I be able to start using computer as if nothing changed?
I know enough to be dangerous and I'm hesitant to upgrade for fear of losing everything. Would appreciate help. Thanks!Charmedgreen wrote:

Correct, in fact, Lion is no longer directly available from the App Store.
Also, do I need to "empty my trash" before going forward?

I currently have Leopard, and there are no longer updates for it. So I must upgrade to either Snow Leopard or Mountain Lion. Without doing so I cannot update my itunes, and my ipod is no longer compatile with my mac. How can I buy the upgrade, since I do not have access to the mac store as that comes with Snow Leopard? I went to Best Buy and they said neither Snow Leopard or Mountain Lion can be bought there.

Whilst Apple have withdrawn Snow Leopard from their stores, you can still get it from Apple by calling 1-800-MY-APPLE (if you are in the USA) and they will supply the SL DVD for $20 for a single user, or $30 for a family pack that covers up to 5 Macs. You can also purchase the code to use to download Lion from the same number (Lion requires an Intel-based Mac with a Core 2 Duo, i3, i5, i7 or Xeon processor and 2GB of RAM, running the latest version of Snow Leopard), or you can purchase Mountain Lion from the App Store - if you can run that:

When you have installed it, run Software Update to download and install the latest updates for Snow Leopard.

I have updated my mac from snow leopard to mountain lion 3 days back. I had some important data in my library folder and it got overwritten. Is there any way i can get the data back from my snow leopard library folder?
I tried mackeeper to recover files but it could not. Any other way any one has tried to recover a system library folder after OS upgrade?No, it doesn't store a clone. You would have needed to make one with either SuperDuper or CarbonCopy Cloner.
If the files were in your ~/Library folder then they may still be there. As I said, you can access it by
going to your Finder "Go" menu hold the option key to choose "Library". I wouldn't think an upgrade would overwrite anything in ~/Library.
If you have a Time Machine backup you may also be able to use that to retrieve them. -
Hi I've just upgraded my MacBook Pro from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion. Now my installed programs:- Quarkxpress 6.5 - Adobe creative suite CS2 - Adobe Acrobat 7.0 professional and Microsoft Office 2004 will not open - I get a banner saying not supported by power mac. Can anyone please help me I really need these programs for my work. Thank you!

i think it is bad new for you. if it's any consilation i went through the same thing when i loaded mountain lion when it first came out. i think the problem is that mountain lion is a pure 64bit operating system and the software you have is 32bit. earlier os's were able to emulate 32bit but the new system does not. the answer is new software. i did it and it cost me a load of money and much angst so your not alone.
