Partition internal drive on new computer?

Hello I just got a mac pro,
I will be using it primarily for FCP. Now I have more internal drive space (250 gigs) than I have been used to working with. For big projects I will use external drives, but for smaller ones I plan to capture to the internal drive.
Is it correct that I should NOT partition my internal drive to isolate media from projects.
If its a matter of preference I'd just as soon not do it, but if it is wise to, I will
thanks!
Dillon

Dillon,
I will again suggest that you not use your internal drive for media, just because it's good advice. That being said...
There is no real benefit from partitioning your hard drive for media. It will not improve proformance (to my knowledge). The only thing it will do for you is give you a dedicated "folder"/area for your media. I prefer options, and just putting things in a folder seems smoother to me than working with a virtual disk and its arbitrary size.
Hope that helps!

How do you get Photos to recognize the “old” iPhoto Library on an external drive without it copying it to the internal drive on the computer which is low in HD space?

Launch Photos while holding down the alt/options key.
This will show the Library Chooser panel. Select the library on the external drive. Photos will create a Photos Library on the same drive.
Photos may not be able to open the library, however, if your external drive has an incompatible file system. It needs to be formatted MacOS Extended (Journaled) and locally mounted, not a remotely mounted volume, as described here:  Format external drives to Mac OS Extended before using with Aperture

Data was saved on external hard drive. Purchased new iMac, OS 10.9.4, how to get old iphoto library from hard drive to new computer.
Teresa, in what way way the data saved to an external hard drive?  Do you have a copy of your iPhoto library on that drive? Or is it a clone of your old system drive ? A Time Machine backup?
And which iPhoto version did you have on your old Mac?
If your external drive holds a copy of your iPhoto library, you can simply connect this drive your new mac and drag the library over.  It will depend in the version of your old iPhoto, how you can open the the old library. If it is an iPhoto '09 or '11 library, you can aunch iPhoto with the options key held down and select the library as your new iPhoto library.  If the iPhoto version is older, you will have to ru the iPhoto Library Upgrader first.

How can i initialize an older external hard drive (maxtor one touch ii, without the original operating disc)  into my new computer operating mac osx 10.6.8 to transfer an itunes library?

Just connect the drive, run Disk Utility, select the drive, and partition/erase it as required.
By the way, this forum is intended for questions about old, pre-G3 hardware, and doesn't get much traffic. Hence it's not the forum where you'll be most likely to get help with problems involving more recent systems. There are specific forums for all PowerPC and Intel-based Macs as well as forums for each version of Mac OS X.

    Hi Perilman,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities! I understand that all of your iTunes media is on an external hard drive and you would like to move that media onto your new Windows computer hard drive. The following article has step by step instructions for this specifically. Part 5 in the External drive section is probably what is going to be most relevant to you.

  • Copied places.sqlite from crashed drive to new computer per instructions and old bookmarks don't load

I copied the places.sqlite folder from a crashed drive (FF 3.6.15, Windows XP) to the new computer (FF 4.01 Windows 7) per instructions, to appdata/roaming/moz/fire/profiles etc.
There are also JSON/bookmark backup files on the old drive's directory, they don't display when I try the import html command. All files have data.
How do I get the bookmarks to load on the new computer? Just copying the places.sqlite file didn't work.

  • Import iTunes Library from External Drive to New Computer with Vista

I can't seem to "import" my entire iTunes library from my external hard drive to my new computer. However, I can import songs one-by-one. There must be a way to transfer the whole file at once but it is beyond me. Anyone have a solution?

Hi I am new and have found a way to import Files & Folders over my home network and or other drives.
Start in File, click "Add File to Library", or "Add Folder to Library". In the “look in” dropdown window, locate the File or folder and double click on it. It should begin to transfer. I have never transferred an enter library though.
    On a personal note,
I have come to realize that I can only transfer iTunes music. I can not transfer or even find the music that I have installed from a CD into my iTunes library. iTunes dose recognize even the folder that such music is in. If any of you have an answer to this problem let me know.
    Thanks

  • Moving iTunes from external drive to new computer

I have my itunes stored on an external drive lettered "E". How can I move them to my new computer. The external drive letter "E" is not available on the new computer but the hard drive is plenty large enough to hold my whole collection and I would like to install them on it. I have already copied my itunes music folder and libraries to the new computer.
    Thanks for any input.

This did not work. I signed into the iTunes store as the same user and I can still not play the music I purchased or the music I am authorized to play that others purchased. Can anyone help out with this question?

  • Loaded information from hard drive to new computer without iphoto.  where are the photos i had in iphoto?

    Hi there,
I spilled beer on an older macbook and it was too pricey to repair.  I had the Apple store save all files and information from the harddrive to an external hard drive. I moved all the files and information onto a refurbished macbook.  The refurbished macbook does not have ilife, particularly iphoto.  All of the photos that I had in iphoto on the old computer are gone.  Are they still available someplace?  How do I get to them?  If I can not access them on my new computer without iphoto can I exchange the old hard drive for the new one? Thank you very much.
    e

The iPhoto library that was on the hard drive of the damaged Macbook will still be there.
I suggest you take the hard drive out of the dead MB and install it in an inexpensive external enclosure. Something like this:
    http://www.amazon.com/Vantec-NexStar-2-5-Inch-External-Enclosure/dp/B002JQNXZC
Once you have the drive in the enclosure you can connect it to your new Mac, install iPhoto on the new Mac, and access the library. This step can be tricky, so post back when you are ready.

  • Itunes from hard drive to new computer

    Hi All
I have the following issue, I have my itunes (all music, tv shows, films andf iphone 4 back up) on an external hard drive that has 232GB of space I have read that i need to consolidate the libary to move it, but i have 137GB of information and it copies the folder to the same location i do not have enough space on the external hard drive or my old computer (it only has 60GB space) to do the consolidation.
I have plugged my hard drive into my new computer (sony running windows 7 64bit home premium) but cannot open itunes via the external hard drive.
My problem is I want to move my itunes to the new computer (which has a 500GB hard drive) how do i do this or do i need to buy an addtional hard drive to move the files (i do not wish to pay out more).
Does anybody know a way of doing this with the hard drive and the external hard drive (my other concern is that i do not want to lose all my contact on my iphone).
    Thanks Nick UK

  • How do I transfer data from external hard drive to new computer

We had been using a PC with XP that had four different users and ITune libraries.   It was attacked by viruses that got deep in op system and could not be fixed.   We purchased a new PC with Windows 8.   I had transfered the itune files by copying them from the hard drive to a external hard drive.    Is there a way to transfer the files from the external hard drive to the iTunes that I just downloaded onto the new computer.   I thought that it would be as easy as copying the files from the external hard drive to the iTunes file on the new computer but this did not work.   If I go into iTunes and select copy file from library it will import the file just file but I really don't want to copy thousands of files one by one.   However, when I try to open those files I get an error message.    We have two iPads and four iPod Touches.   Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I found a posted answer from someone else who asked the same question and it worked.   It said to copy the entire file that was saved on the external hard drive to the my music folder before ever opening ITunes that was newly installed and it worked.

  • Strange iTunes Move from Old Hard Drive to New Computer

My friend's old computer exploded but the hard drive and its data are fine. He had iTunes on it (not sure what version) and I'm trying to figure out how to move iTunes to the new PC but I'm running into a few problems.
First of all, I hooked his old hard drive to the computer with an IDE to USB converter so it mounts as just another drive.
I then installed the latest iTunes on his new PC and when we hooked up his iPod, it asked to blank the thing out (so I hit Cancel).
So my question is a little more complicated than most since I have two things to accomplish here. I not only want to move his existing iTunes library to his new PC but I also need iTunes to work with his existing iPod. Hopefully, that won't involve wiping it since he has songs on his iPod that he doesn't have on his old iTunes, but perhaps I'll need to somehow get all his songs off his iPod, let iTunes wipe the iPod, then put them all back? I imagine I'd need to bring his iTunes library over first.
Anyone have any ideas of the steps necessary to make this dance happen? I'm very computer literate, so detailed explanations aren't needed. I just need general directions and what order to do them in.
    Thanks,
    bd
    DELL Dimension E521   Windows XP

    Chris,
I'm sorry, I forgot to mention that the music on his iPod isn't completely the same as what's in his iTunes. This is what made this move so strange. I needed to figure out not only how to move his iTunes music collection to a new PC, but also how to keep iTunes from wiping his iPod since he has music on it that isn't in his iTunes.
Since the new iTunes won't recognize his iPod without wiping it, is there any way to manually pull the music off his iPod, somehow put it in his iTunes folder so iTunes recognizes it, allow iTunes to wipe his iPod so he can synchronize iTunes with it, and finally put all his music back on his iPod?
    Thanks,
    Brian

  • Moving music from external hard drive to new computer

I lost my iTunes library, but still has my music file on an external hard drive. How do I get my music onto the new computer + Itunes from the external hard drive?

On new year's eve some POS shot a .40 cal bullet through my living room window and hit my 20" 2.4 GHz iMac on the edge of the screen. -- Let me just pause to say that we're lucky we were out at a party. -- Anyway, this iMac was the hub for our media. We used it to sync/control content on our ATV, of which we had about 200 GB of music, TV, & movies (mostly purchased via iTunes). I had a Lacie hard drive connected to the iMac for storage of the iTunes Music folder (I was running 10.5...it wasn't upgraded to OS 10.6). Anyway, I didn't have the media backed-up (not using time machine), but the external hard drive wasn't damaged by the bullet. I now have the 21.5" 3.06 Ghz iMac with OS 10.6. Is there a way to get the new computer to use the content on the Lacie hard drive?

  • How to get itunes library from external drive to new computer

i recently purchased a new computer w/the windows vista platform. there were posts regarding how to transfer the library w/playlists on this board, which i followed to the point of hitting shift while opening itunes, and choosing a library. however, when selecting such from my external drive, which has the itl and xml on it as well as the itunes music folder, it gives me an error noting it is locked or that i dont have write permission to use it. my external drive on my old computer was the G drive, now it is the F drive on new one. can anyone please advise what to do other than copy all music over and have to completely recreate all playlists?

polydorus, this was the response/post that i found and it was posted by sweepea on 9/4/2007. and all my music is now from the external drive to the itunes music folder on my laptop and it let me keep all my playlists. thank you again for your help!
I had that problem too. I tried to remove iTunes from my computer and then download it again, but that did not make any difference. Then I tried polydorus' answer ("starting iTunes with the shift key held down, when asked to choose a library, navigate to your iTunes folder and choose iTunes Library.itl"), but that did not work either and that same message about the library being locked appeared again.
Then I had a brainwave. I deleted that iTunes library.itl file. (To find it, go to My documents, then My Music, then iTunes, and there is the itunes library file). I now tried to open iTunes by clicking on the iTunes icon on my desktop, nothing happened, as if I had not clicked on it at all. I restored the file from the recycling bin to where it was before. But that also returned me to where I had been before, i.e. I got that locked-library message again. So I deleted that file again. Then I tried right-clicking on the iTunes icon. On the little menu that appeared, I clicked 'Open' and hey presto, suddenly the iTunes set-up assistant appeared and everything went smooth from then on. When I checked, there was a file called iTunes library.itl again and this one worked OK.
By the way, I did not lose any of my music downloads or podcasts when I deleted that file, so it's definitely worth a try.
