Partition Issue when installing XP SP2

I have an OEM disk for Win XP PRO SP2. When I reach the point in the installation where it asks me to select a partition all I see is one giant partition that equals the size of my entire HDD. When I use my OSX install disk and use the disk utility, I see three partitions, one of which is BOOTCAMP. How do I get XP to see these partitions? Or better yet, is there a way to back out of this without deleting everything I have in OSX?
If I hold down the Option button at startup the only thing to pick from is the CD I have in the CD Drive. Am I already screwed?

My OEM disk was a DELL disc. I have used this disc to install windows using Parallels and it worked fine. Here's what I have found...
If you are about to install Windows via Boot Camp make absolutely certain that a)the partition you about to install to is labeled as "Boot Camp" and b) the size of the partition matches exactly what you created with the boot camp assistant. If there is a mismatch on either or both, STOP IMMEDIATELY! If you don't stop, then windows will begin trying to install itself on top of your OSX platform and will do much damage.
If you think your mac is hosed, do this. Buy yourself an external hard drive, preferrably the same size as your internal hard drive. Insert your OSX installation disc and install OSX to the external HDD (yes, mac will boot and run from the external). Be sure to select the "GUID" format under "partition/options." Get yourself a copy of TechTools Pro V4 by Micromat. Use the recovery features to attempt to get your data back. In my case windows actually wrote its files over my mac files and TechTools helped me recover over 650 MB worth of pictures that I didn't have backed up. Considering what happened to me I believe TechTools is AMAZING! Retreive and sort your files on the external. Once you are satisfied that you have recovered everything you can, format your internal drive and reinstall OSX (be sure to disconnect your external so that you don't accidentally format it too. Now, copy everything back to the internal. Finally, with that you external you have, use time machine to periodically back your system up.

  • Issue when installing SQL Server Express 2012 - "The requested control is not valid for this service" + "Could not find the database engine startup handle"

    Good morning,
    I'm experiencing the following issue when installing Microsoft SQL Server Express 2012 (with tools, SQLEXPRWT_x86_ENU.exe) on the laptop of my company;
Installation goes plain until around the end of the progress bar, it stops on the setup of
    SqlEngineDBStartConfigAction_install_configrc_Cpu32
    giving 7-8 times, even pressing "Cancel", the message "The requested control is not valid for this service";
After this, I receive one last message ""Could not find the database engine startup handle", then installation ends with failures, in particular the Database Engine and the Server Replication failed to be installed.
    I've put in my SkyDrive the error log I received after the install;
I'm at full disposal if you need further information,
    thank you in advance
    Best regards
    Francesco

Well, i just ran into this issue and the problem was lack of admin rights. It was my company's laptop so got the setup initiated by my company's IT team with admin rights. However, the upon completion of setup, i go the same error messages as stated above:
    SqlEngineDBStartConfigAction_install_configrc_Cpu32
    giving 7-8 times, even pressing "Cancel", the message "The requested control is not valid for this service";
After this, I receive one last message ""Could not find the database engine startup handle", then installation ends with failures, in particular the Database Engine and the Server Replication failed to be installed.
Also, if you open SQL Server Configuration, the status of the service is "Change Pending" and you would not be able to set the startup login type to Local Service/System/Network.
Then, I just got my account added as Local Admin and then tried to start the service and was able to.
However, I am not sure whether same was the case for you.

  • Issue when installing xp on a T60

    Hi Dudes !
One day, when booting my T60, I got a blue screen; i tried many things to fix this problem, but nothing worked. So i formatted the inside hd (on another PC), deleting the hidden parttion, i set the bios in compatibiltiy (ide) mode and i started to install xp sp2 with my xp CD. It began well, the installator starting to write the xp files on the hd, but when the laptop rebooted, dark screen (just the cursor) and blocked. Why ? What must i do ?
    Thanks a lot.

    Hello,
In addition to testing the ThinkPad T60 by booting from a Linux Live CD, you might want to try the Linux-based Lenovo Bootable Diagnostics disc.  While it is actually designed to test newer ThinkPads than the T60, perhaps it will be able to examine the T60's hardware for errors.

  • Issues when installing apps

I have issues when istalling apps that I purchased of free apps that end on *.sys. Can someone help me to determine? It downloads the app but when installing gives me an "installation error" message. I checked configurations and it should allow me to install any app on the phone. Any toughts? Any one that can help me, please? This is a Nokia N8.

    Hello,
No this had never occured the same way in CS6, Other instances of this have occured with CS6 like not being able to open PSD's in AE. But nothing where the Dynmaic Link manager would stop working.
I realize this issue is caused by my storgae setup becuase as I stated above, when I create a new win7 user and luanched the CC Apps( After Effects, Premirere Pro, Photoshop). they work fine. ( this is becuase the user profile for the user remains on the C: drive)
Where as my main user for my machine differs, in that the user profile exists on my D: drive ( for sake of capacity )
All of the Apps work fine with the new user and user profile on the C: drive, but this is not really an option for me as the SSD im using will not be able to store my large amount of user files ( documents, downloads, appdata, pictures, etc.. )

  • DW CS3 preview issue after installing Vista SP2

I have DW CS3 installed on my desktop and laptop computers. One computer uses vista64 and the other vista32. After installing vista service pack 2, I now have the following issue previewing PHP pages under Apache: All browsers give me a "cannot display the webpage" error UNLESS I am connected to some kind of network--it could be the internet or my peer-to-peer network. My destop computer is attached to a printer via RJ45 cable. If the printer is turned on, I can preview webpages in DW. If the printer is turned off, I cannot! Or, if I am connected to the internet through my wireless internet card, I can preview pages, otherwise, not.
Previous to installing SP2, I was able to preview pages on both computers without the need to be connected to a network, so I am pretty sure that SP2 is involved in this new issue.
When Apache and MySQL start up in the XAMPP control panel, there are no errors, and I can go into PHPMyAdmin just fine.
Has anyone else run into this? Any thoughts?

I'm just following up here. I have not solved the issue, but I did figure out that the problem isn't with vista service pack 2 but with Kaspersky anti-virus 2009.

  • Task Sequence Windows Server 2012 format and partition issue when using MDT2012

    Hi all,
Currently I'm working on a task sequence to deploy a Windows Server 2012 image. We've integrated MDT2012 Update 1 in SCCM2012 SP1 and created a default 'Server Task Sequence'. This task sequence deploys the install.wim to a server which has multiple disks
    attached.
We've configured multiple format and partition disk steps to create the following partition layout:
Disk 0: 499MB BDEDrive (do not assign drive letter) + 40GB OSDisk
    Disk 1: 40GB Programs
    Disk 2: 40GB Data
    Disk 3: 25GB User
When the task sequence is finished I've noticed the drive letters assigned to the disk are not correct. In some cases the BDEdrive gets drive letter D assigned, sometimes drive letters are assigned starting with E, thus skipping drive
    letter D.
The smsts.log files show an error when it's re-assigning drive letters after booting into Windows. Looks like an error in the DiskPartScript.txt.

It seems this error is caused by the first 'Format and Partition Disk' step before the 'Use Toolkit Package' step which is part of the default Server Task sequence. When I disable this Format and Partition step and create the partition manually
all looks ok showing no errors in the smsts.log file.
I've solved this by replacing the first 'Format and Partition Disk' step by an Powershell command which formats and partitions the disk.
    Anyone seen this behavior?

I have a similar problem when I install windows on some clients. Have you found any explanation for the behavior?

  • Issues when installing Windows XP on a PXI-8108 with a Solid State HDD

    Hi,
I have been assisting a client with installing Windows XP onto a PXI-8108 controller.  They have replaced the default HDD with a solid-state HD.
We have attempted to run the System Recovery CD.  The recovery part works fine, ie. you select Acronis, it unzips all the files to C drive.
However when it gets up to the bit where Win XP Setup starts (after rebooting once the Recovery section completes), we have issues.
It can't find files, ie. dmconfig.dll, gm.dls, etc on the Win XP CD.  When it tries to find mfc40u.dll, it came up with an error:
"The file Setup placed on your hard drive is not a valid Win XP System image.  If you are installing from a CD, there may be a problem with the Windows XP CD."
We have tried two different recovery CDs, and we even tried just a plain Win XP CD.  All had similar issues.
We have tried different SATA settings in the BIOS - both IDE AND AHCI.
It may just be that we have a faulty SSD, however it seemed to work ok when we had it connected to the PXI via USB (with the default HDD still in place).  I was able to run diskcheck, which did not bring up any errors.  Disk Management showed things were healthy.
So what I would like to know, is if there is any issue with a PXI-8108, and SSDs?  We have successfully performed this operation a few months back using the same brand of SDD, but with a PXI-8104.
Any suggestions would be much appreciated!

This is more than likely a failing disk.  SSDs don't always report failures in the same way as a rotating drive.  Also, the tools that are helpful with diagnosing rotating drive failures don't always work with SSDs.
From the thread, it sounds like you have another system with this same SSD and it is working properly.  Does that system have the same PXI Controller and Chassis?
I have seen these types of errors if the media for the OS installation is corrupt, but it sounds like you have tried different CDs.
I realize you have limited access to this drive, but here are my recommendations:
    1)  Put the failing SSD in a different system (desktop is preferable), and install a base version of XP.  If this fails, RMA the drive, they normally have 3-5 warranties.
    2)  Run Crystal Mark Info and check for SMART failures:
    http://crystalmark.info/software/CrystalDiskInfo/index-e.html
    3)  You can securely erase the SSD, which is not for the faint of heart.  This will restore the drive to a new condition.  If the drive has a bad cell which is causing data corruption during the OS install, securely erasing the drive will hopefully cause the firmware to map out the bad areas.  This is a good tutorial, just ignore that fact that it is targeted at Intel drives.

  • R5K Sound issues when installing Windows 8.1

    Hello everyone
I installed Windows 8.1 Pro as downloaded. I used BCA > USB on my R5K to install Windows.. (Boot Camp drivers via BCA as well). Everything works fine except the sound when using Windows. There is sound, but it all... sounds disturbing, like listening to a radio. Nothing like the sound quality when using OS X, no epic sound effects and crystals clear sound whatsoever. And I think it's not even using all the speakers at the bottom of the iMac when producing the audio. I tried playing with Sound setting in Control Panned, with the audio settings in MPC, VLC, iTunes, re-installed the drivers just to be sure nothing went wrong with the installation and nothing work, I am still getting that "crappy sound quality"...
I am welcome to any suggestions, spend half a day just trying to fix this... Thank you in advance

Does Apple Diagnostics indicate any hardware issues?
Using Apple Diagnostics - Apple Support
Apple Diagnostics: Reference codes - Apple Support
Do you get proper sound on the OSX side?

  • No bootable device issue when installing Win 7 Pro 64 with OSX 10.8.3

Trying to install Win 7 Pro 64 on brand new iMac running 10.8.3.
Using external LaCie optical drive to read Win 7 OEM DVD installer.
Using Bootcamps Assistant, I can create the Windows partition but then when the iMac restarts to insatll Windows, I get a black screen with the message No Bootable device found.
Seems the iMac is not able to boot from the LaCie external drive.
Have tested the LaCie on both a mac and a PC and it works fine.
This iMac can see the drive and its contents in OSX but can't seem to boot to it to install Win 7.
How do I get a round this?
I have done dozens of dual boots using bootcamp but all with Macs that have built in optical drives.  Have never had this much trouble.

I just got this working - finally!
My solution was to download the Win7 ISO file from microsoft and then use BootCamp Assistant to create a USB ISO.  From there, I was able to boot to that "disk" and install Windows.  I read a variety of posts some saying that you cannot use an external DVD drive, others saying that you could but it had to be an Apple SuperDrive.  In any case, the ISO download worked and I would recommend that approach.

Does anyone know what is causing this issue and is there away to fix this problem without doing a complete archive reinstall all over again?

Is the partition scheme and format consistent with that machine and Leopard?
    Were the drives password protected?
Can you mount the drives using the terminal?
Do the drives show up on any another computer running Tiger? If they don't then going back to Tiger won't help.
There was a problem early on that it sometimes took a very long time (1/2 hour) for Leopard to recognize a drive because of Spotlight. How long did you wait for the drives to be recognized?

  • Issues when installing Hyper-V Platform with 8 network filters running

Hi. This isn't so much a question as a solution in case anyone else has this problem.
I tried to install Hyper-V Platform on Windows 8.1 Pro but it kept undoing changes after 93%.
I had it previously installed on the same hardware so knew there weren't any limitations there. Some forums suggested running "Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth" followed by "Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth" but this
    made no difference.
Eventually, I looked up a forums that suggested "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Network\MaxNumFilters" had to be set if a maximum of 8 filters were in use. So I created a DWORD entry with a value
of 14 (maximum on previous Windows versions) but it still didn't work!
I checked how many networks filter were active with this powershell script:
    get-itemproperty hklm:\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Network | format-list -property MaxNumFilters
    $children = get-childitem -path hklm:\system\currentcontrolset\control\network\"{4d36e974-e325-11ce-bfc1-08002be10318}" | get-childitem | where-object {$_.PSChildName -eq "Ndi"} | get-itemproperty | where-object {$_.FilterClass} |get-itemproperty -name FilterClass
    "Filter Count: " + $children.count
    "Filter List: "
    $children | foreach-object -process { get-itemproperty -path $_.PSParentPath } | format-list -property Description,PSPath
Still 8 were active! I then read that Windows 8.1 should scale MaxNumFilters automatically so I removed MaxNumFilters from the registry. Finally, I uninstalled my Anti-Virus (Kaspersky in my case) then tried installing Hyper-V platform again and it worked!
After that, I ran the powershell script again and it detected that 9 filters were running. It looks like a bug whereby Windows is not scaling up the MaxNumFilters properly when Hyper-V platform is installed.
This might only be an issue with Kaspersky and/or if exactly 8 filters are running but I imagine there are many more conditions under which this might occur.

  • Issues when installing SAP IK FP1 and FP2

    Hi all,
has anybody installed the SAP IK 3.0 FP1 and FP2? If so, after installing it, were you able to load the cmc page and infoview page in internet explorer.
I get an error when typying the url:

seems like the deploy of the applications did not run properly.
I have done it a couple of times and the same error.
    Anyone has any idea?
    Thanks a lot

    Hi Luis,
first a couple of things that you must take into account.
    - I have installed the FP1 and FP2 just to see if I could an issue with the SAP IK. After doing that I realized that some things got
solved but other did not. So I uninstalled the FP.
    - If you just need to install the FP to solve a different issue, you can try by leaving the service name blank (I have not tested that) or
if you fill that information, you can redeploy manually the PartnersPlaformService from tomcat. That way it works
    I hope this helps

  • Leopard Issues When Installing

    Hello
I don't know if I'm in the right location for this question regarding the new OS Leopard. But maybe you can direct me to the correct location.
I have five customers who upgraded from Tiger to Leopard OS 10.5; after they upgraded their OS they weren't able to login using their admin password. Even when they setup a login account their password (admin password) wouldn't work. I tried to reset the password from the boot-up CD of Leopard but that didn't work either. I asked my customers if they did an Archive Clean install and preserve preferences and network settings, or did they do an Upgrade? All of them told me they did an upgrade. I tried to do an Archive Clean install preserve network settings but after the install still couldn't login using the customer's admin password. Later I found out that the Application Extender got tweaked and changed the settings in the Admin Password where you can't login. What I want to know from this group is, how does this happen and what should the client do when upgrading their OS to 10.5? Why did the Application Extender tweak the Admin Password?
Please let me know your thoughts.
    Thank you
    Phil

Best is a slippery issue as it depends on how your systems are set up and what's going to be the most acceptable of tradeoff between effort and risk. There's one issue with groups on Leopard; a group in Tiger doesn't exist in Leopard, so Upgrade and A&I installations can leave some permissions set to an "unknown" group to which some people have attributed Finder problems. The only way to avoid this at present seems to be to back up all the user data, do an Erase & Install, set up the user accounts fresh, and copy back the user documents and reset preferences. That's obviously a lot of work and I don't know how much that permissions issue really affects (there's been a lot of discussion about it, but I haven't seen any definitive proof that it causes the problems attributed to it, though it well might), but that's the cleanest way to install Leopard (or for that matter, any OS).
You'll have to decide what the most time-effective route is for your users. I'd suggest at least that you have them verify Leopard compatibility with all of their apps and drivers and remove them before attempting any Upgrade or A&I installation (an A&I installation, since it preserves apps and many drivers, would not be a reliable way around issues of incompatible software). Then they can either do the Upgrade or the A&I installation. Note that Upgrade should not be used if the user's system was exhibiting any problems with the existing OS; in such a case, the Upgrade can just magnify the problem.
    Regards.
