Partition on Cache-SSD / Configure ExpressCache

Hello!
My E330 has a 16GB Cache-SSD. I noticed that this disk contains two partitions (each ca.8GB) and ExpressCache uses only one of them. I assume the other partition is for the "Intel Rapid Start Technology", which I consider useless (for me) and disabled in the BIOS.
Now my question is, how can I configure ExpressCache so that it uses the whole 16GB SSD. Of course I know how to repartition the drive. What I don't know is if I have to 'shutdown' the ExpressCache software and reconfigure it, or if I have to completely uninstall/reinstall it.

It shouldn't be too hard to expand the cache partiton.  Here's how I'd do it: (Assume all disclaimers and, of course, do lots of backups. AND, I did this on a w530, not an E330.)
Check out this thread: Thread: HOWTO: Configure a large (> 32GB) SSD to work with ExpressCache
In order to remove your hibernation partion, you need to use Diskpart to change that partion ID to 07 ("set id=07 override") and then you can remove it using windows "Disk Managment". You should make sure the the Rapid Start services are uninstalled and/or disabled before you remove the partion.
In order to expand the ExpressCache partition: stop the ExpressCache service> Using Diskpart, change the cache partion ID to 07>extend the partion to the new size you would like by using Disk Mangement> then, back to Diskpart and "set id=73 override" on the newly extended partion > restart the ExpressCache service.
When you run the command "eccmd -info" you should now see the reported cache is the size of the partition that you just manipulated.
All of that said, I really like using Rapid Start - it really speeds up resume from hibernation here. . .

    Hello,
Can I replace the 16 GB Express Cache SSD-card by a mSATA-SSD ( plextor M5M 128 G - intel SSD 525) or mini PCI-E card to use as system drive?
    Greatings
    Geert

Replacing the original SSD with a larger SSD should not cause a problem for ExpressCache. Do keep in mind that in order for ExpressCache to function the system must be a Hybrid system (HDD + SSD). It will not function on a pure SSD system. Additionally, ExpressCache will only allocate up to a maximum of 32GB for its cache although testing has proven that a partition greater than 16GB offers minimal benefit. As with most other system applications, once you reload/reimage your system ExpressCache will need to be reinstalled. You can contact your system supplier for the ExpressCache application download.

  • U330 touch windows 7 downgrade cache ssd

Hi, ordered a u330 touch and it comes preloaded with win 8, need to install win 7 64bit.
Read a few posts here and other sites that they are having issues setting up the cache Ssd through the Intel rapid storage software (accelerate tab missing)
It requires raid to be enabled on the BIOS does the u330 support raid?
Has anyone managed to get the cache sad working on win 7 ?
    Thanks

    hi neovo-88,
Upon checking the specs, the caching method used by the U330 Touch is Expresscache. To test if Expresscache s working, open a command prompt and type eccmd -info. It should return a result like this:
     - Link to picture
The Expresscache feature is a proprietary software that's preloaded on the machine so there's no guarantee that it will work on another version of Windows. However, you may try to follow this guide on how to re-install it.
As for the caching software via the Intel Rapid Storage Technology (acceleration tab), this will not work as it requires RAID to be enabled in the BIOS (which the system doesn't have).

    Hope this helps

  • Sandisk cache SSD 24GB dead ?

    Hello,
I've recentely decided to install windows 7 pro on my Lenovo U410.
I have lauch diskpart for cleaning disks so i've clean the hard drive and the cache SSD.
But now the SSD is not reconized. Worse, when the SSD is pluged in the bios won't displaying, the boot menu don't want to open and windows doesn't boot (locked on black screen).
The bios want the password, i give him and black screen too.
When i plug-out the SSD the bios work the boot menu too and Windows is booting.
When i plug in the SSD when windows is booted, Windows has no reaction et the SSD is completely invisible in the disk manager or in diskpart.
THe SSD is dead ? or it's just a configuration i've miss ?
thank for attention and sorry for my very poor english :s

    hi leomerirosvo,
When the SSD gets detected, try to use Sandisk's SSD Toolkit which includes a:
    Firmware update (if available)
    SMART tool
    Diagnostic tool
    Drive Information tool
Alternatively, you can use a secure erase utility to reset the SSD to factory settings. You may also try to use a USB to mSATA adapter (like this one) to erase the SSD.

  • Satellite P50t - how caching SSD is built in?

    Hi,
I am considering to buy a P50t, with the 1TB HDD and 8gb caching SSD.
I have searched this forum and the web, but was unable to determine how the SSD is built into the laptop.
I know other laptops the caching SSD is plugged into a mini PCIe slot using mSata with the formfactor M2. 2242 (or NGFF 42mm).
Is there anyone that can confirm Toshiba is doing the same?
I want to know, since I would like to upgrade the caching SSD to a 128gb version.
    Thanks in advance!

    Just bought the P50t-A0EE

Can confirm that the HDD is a hybrid. 1GB HDD with 8GB of NAND flash.

  • How to Add/Install 16Gb Disk Caching SSD?

    Hello everyone,
I just bought the HP Envy 700QE desktop from Costco.  I did find the guide about this desktop/tower (www.nhangraphic.com/HP-Envy-700QE-Upgrade.pdf) but nothing is mention about how to install/config the additional 16Gb Disk Caching SSD.  I really want to have this to improve the performance of the desktop.   Could someone please help me how to add/install and full config 16Gb Disk Caching SSD for this HP Envy 700QE Desktop step by step? Thanks in advance.

    Hi Frank,
mSATA is just a mini-onboard SATA connector where a small circuit board (msata device) can be inserted.  Typically it's used as a way with small form factor devices to add SSD like performance.
You can change the SATA controller mode from the default AHCI setting to RAID in the bios.  Use Computer Setup to enter the bios. Tapping the ESC key right after power on the PC should bring up a menu selection.

  • Caching SSD Upgrade (YOGA)

Is it possible to upgrade the 16gb M.2 Sata caching ssd? If yes once installed does the Thinkpad rebuild the cache automatically.
Secondly would there be any point increasing the caching size?
    Thanks.

I suggest you rather do a swap to a 128GB drive which will be a MUCH better thing. I done it and it's great and as I can see several other users done it also.

  • Recovery and proper SSD configuration

I have a U845-s406 and I had to restore it last night. Using the restore DVD's I created, everything went well except one thing and the "Techs" at the Toshiba Support Center have no idea what I am talking about. They kept asking what SSID I was connecting to..... *sigh*
    Here is the issue:
My daughter formatted the secondary 32gb SSD as an NTFS drive... My questions are as follows:
    1) What format should it be? The display at the store is listed as hibernation partition in disk manager.
    2) The amount of space shown is 11 gb and it is a 32 gb. Is the rest of the partition hidden?
Basically I just need to get it back to factory specs.
    Thank you in advance!

Actually, the problem isn't exactly solved for me.  Because of all the questions regarding this unit, I decided to open a BRAND NEW U845-S406 that I bought from Newegg as a gift for one of my daughters.  Apparently the spec sheet I posted showing a 16GB SSD (or cache, it's just a matter of semantics’) WAS correct,....at least for SOME units.  Despite the fact Newegg advertised the computer as having a "500GB + 32GB SSD", the unit that I received has only a 500GB + 16GB SSD.
Because of how Windows calculates drive space, the SSD drive appears as only an 11GB drive.  The mechanical 500GB drive shows a total 563GB, with a partition of 11GB, making the 500GB appear as about 552GB using Windows calculation method.  Although I haven't opened the computer itself to see what kind of drive it actually is, in Device Manager, it's described cryptically with meaningless letters and numbers and no manufacturer name.  I assume it must be a Toshiba unit and it's one of those "Hybrid" drives.
All I can figure is that they started the manufacturing run installing drives having 500GB with a 16GB cache and then switched to a drive with a 32GB memory cache.  I can tell you one thing though, the unit I received doesn't start up very fast, 16GB cache or not.  In fact, out of the box I was also surprised to see how bad the processor's Aero rating was (3.6), since EVERYTHING else has a pretty good number.  My old "A305 Satellite" (Core 2 Duo) has a faster processor speed rating, although it falls down because of the lousy Intel display chipset.  My wife has a cheap Acer notebook with an AMD processor and ATI display chipset and it beats BOTH computers in EVERY category.  Go figure.

  • SSD Configuration?

    Hi Folks:
Solid State Drives?  Is this the right forum?  Isn't that hardware and this forum is about... C++?
Yea, this is the right forum.
I've been developing projects with 100K plus lines of C++ code on my tired 6 or 7 year old PC.  A full compile can take over 15 minutes!
I'm in the market for a new PC.  I want a rocket.
Just a new I7 processor and new fast drive will get me far, but I want more.
So, I'm looking at solid state drives, but I'm not sure what I want, or how to configure one to boost massive C++ compiles.
What SSDs are you guys and gals using?
       How big?
What's on your SSD, what's in your hard drive?
System and Visual Studio on the SSD?
       C++ Projects on the SSD?
I'll want anything sensitive, like my code, on a Truecrypt encrypted partition.  In case my shiny new PC grows legs and walks out the door.
Any ideas on how to move forward are appreciated.
       Thanks
       Larry

  • Can't partition my internal SSD drive

    Hello,
After some trouble with mail drop, my mac has frozen, i forced the restart but it could not boot on my drive anymore.
I started in recovery mode and tried to repair with the last backup but the drive could not be unmounted.
I unmounted the drive with diskutil in command line using the force option.
Since then, I can't partition/erase my internal SSD drive anymore, i have tried all format but i always get this error (in french) : "Le balayage des données du volume afin d'empêcher de futures recherches accidentelles a échoué".
How can i erase and partition this drive in order to reinstall Yosemite ?
    Thanks in advance
    My configuration :
    MacBook Pro 13 pouces
    Processeur 2,7GHz Intel Core i7
    OS X Yosemite 10.10.3

Anyway Right click on the Network connection
Did that -- I get a window with three tabs, General, Exceptions, Advanced. Exceptions has a long list, which includes Bonjour, which is checked. But I don't see any list of Bonjour Advertised Services and nothing about CD.DVD anywhere I've looked.
Next possible step??? (I really appreciate all the effort you're putting into this!)
, iirc, then shoe UpnP.Bonjour stuff, opens the Firewall & supposedly shows "Advertised" services, then you'd Mount the Mavs CD.DVD if it works!

  • Build new PC - SSD configuration - RAID0 useful?

    Hello,
I plan to build up a new new PC, mainly use is Illustrator CS5 (probably upgrade later to CS6), but also a little usage of PS 64-bit and a 3D-application.
The genreal set up is clear:
Xeon E3-1230V3 Quadcore CPU (on a H77 MB wich supports RAID)
    Quadro K-600 display card
    32 GB Ram
    2TB HDD
The big questionmark is the configuration of the SSDs:
From my budget I can deal with total of ~500GB SSD storage (Samsung 840 evo price level).
The question: Is a RAID 0 array useful? (with daily Backup).
I'm thinking of following Set ups :
    A.) 4 x 120GB SSD Raid 0 array - OS, Scratch, Project-Data on different partitions
    B.) 1 x 500 GB SSD - OS, Scratch, Project-Data on different partitions
    C.) 1 x 250GB (OS & Project data on 2 partitions) + 2 x 120GB Raid 0 array for Scratch.
What option would provide the best performance ?
Further: Makes it sense to use a partition of the HDD for VM drive or better use OS partiotion?

I strongly recommend that you do some research about how SSDs function--IF you set your machine up as described--you will be needlessly burning up your SSDs.
multiple SSDs can be a waste of $$
for best performance--put your OS and Primary apps on a single SSD--do not use an SSD for a scratch disk (you'll wear it out) because SSDs have a limited number of 'write' cycles--the more you write to it, the faster it will become a 'read only' brick--use standard HDDs for storage and scratch disks (maybe 10,000 RPM if you want the best performance)--furthermore--partitioning an SSD is (generally) not recommended) partitioning a conventional HDD can cause problems--if the drive fails, for any reason, you could lose your partition(s)/data.
...and you probably shouldn't run SSDs in a raid array

  • Hibernation Partition on the SSD

I have a HP Envy 4-1043CL and it is an SSD/HDD combo with Windows 7.
If I don't use hibernate, is it possible to remove the partition used for hibernate, and expand the existing partion on the SSD to be a bigger cache?
Once removed, if I change my mind, is it possible to put it back?

The hibernation partition is usually a non-DOS file system like FAT12. You may have to use the command line diskpart command to remove it. Here is an article that will help:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/300415
List the partitions, then select the hibernation partition and try to delete it. Examples are given in the link above. Note the discussion of the override command which you may have to use with the delete partition command.
I would make a backup image of the whole hard drive before doing that however, just in case. If you do not want to hibernate you do not need the hibernation partition. It is always the same size as the installed memory because to hibernate it writes the contents of memory to the disk partition. I had kind of thought hiberfil.sys had taken the place of suspend to disk but obviously not.

  • How to reuse the same disk (partition) for next ASM configuration?

    Hello All,
I had successfully installed and configured ASM instance once, but I need to do a reinstallation and I would like to use the same disk (partition) as with previous ASM configuration.
The disk path used was: /dev/rdsk/c1t3d0s7
I have to regretfully admit that I may not have used the right ASM un-installation procedure. I ran installer and opted to de-install products. Consequently, I had removed ASM home. Now, when I running new ASM installation, everything goes fine until the screen where I should select disks for ASM configuration. Unfortunately, I see the /dev/rdsk/c1t3d0s7 with status > MEMBER < and I can't select it for the new ASM installation.
I will really appreciate if anyone can let me know how to change status from MEMBER to CANDIDATE.
    Thank you for your time.
    DanielD

Overwrite the first several MB of the partition with /dev/zero.
    So, use this command:
    # dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/rdsk/c1t3d0s7 bs=1024k count=10
That clears out the ASM header on the disk so that it looks like a clean disk again.
