Partition on internal drive not appearing on desktop

This is a funny one. I have a 200 GB, data-only partition on my internal drive. The other partition has an unused OSX on it (I boot from FW). A few days ago, when I was playing around trying to write-protect this particular disk, I set all the paramaters in +Get Info+ to +Read Only+. I don't know whether that caused this problem, but now this partition doesn't appear on the desktop, but the other partition does.
Disk Warrior, Silver Keeper and Disk Utility know the disk is there because I can overwrite the old directory (with DW), verify it (with DU), and backup data to it (with SK).
But I can't see the thing!
In Disk Utility, the icon for the disk is similar to a blank iText document (all white). When I demount the disk, the icon changes to the normal icon. When I mount the disk, it doesn't mount and the icon reverts to the iText-looking icon.
The data is no problem because I have two other disks with backed-up data, so I could erase it and copy data back to it.
How do I get my precious disk back on the desktop without erasing it (assuming that would work)?
One other thing: Disk Warrior reported that the drive might be overheating and was running at a temperature of about 50º C. But ten minutes later, after a reboot, that message wasn't there.

Hi Guy, see Niels how to here...

  • External Hard Drive Not Appearing on desktop

My external HD has disappeared from my desktop. If I connect it via FW it does not appear in disk utilities or system profiler but if I connect it via usb it appears in both. I've switched out the cables, tried different ports and reset the PRAM and NVRAM. Can anyone offer any suggestions as to a fix?
    Thanks in advance

    Scott:
I take it from your explanation that even though it appears in all three of the utilities that my only remaining option is to use DataRescue II. Correct?
Let's say that it is the only one that occurs to me at this time of night
The demo version will at least show you that the data is still there. Another option might be to use SuperDuper to see if you can clone the User's Folder, or indeed the entire volume to an external firewire HDD, then using DU to reformat and erase the HDD (post for directions if needed) and clone back from external firewire HDD.
Yes, the drive does show up in sidebar in all three of the utilities I mentioned.
Is it possible to run Repair Disk in Disk Utility and see how it comes out? Or if you have done it already, what does it say?
While in Disk Utility, select the Manufacture ID of the external HDD and then look at the look at the icons at the very top. Is Mount dimmed or active? If active, click on it to mount the HDD.
Also, what happens if you try to Option boot?
If anything else occurs to me I will post back in the morning.
    Cheers

  • Drive Not Appearing on Desktop or in Finder

    Hi,
My computer has been off for a week while I've been off on vacation and I just turned it on for the first time today only to find that my external Seagate backup drive doesn't appear on my desktop or in the finder. However, when I open Time Machine settings or when I plug the USB cord in to the computer, the drive spins and seems like it wants to connect to the computer, but still doesn't show up. Any help or solution is greatly appreciated! Thanks!

It sounds like your drive may be failing.
Try the Disk Utility app, in your Applications/Utilities folder. Does the drive appear in it's sidebar? If it does, try to do a +*Repair Disk+* (not permissions) on it.
If it doesn't appear, try different ports and cables. If Disk Utility can't see it at all, there's probably not much you can do with it. If you have a heavy-duty 3rd-party disk repair app, like Disk Warrior, it's barely possible it can see and fix it, but don't spend the $100 for DW, as it will most likely not work.
Was the disk powered-on while you were gone? Is it on a U.P.S. or surge protector? Could there have been a power surge or brownout while you were gone?
How old is it? I think most Seagates have a 5-year warranty, if that's any consolation.

  • External hard drives not appearing on Desktop

I have three external hard drives, none of which are showing up on my Desktop. All three drives are mounted, and I can navigate to them through the sidebar in Finder windows, and the contents of the drives are all fine and intact. In Finder preferences under "Show these items on the desktop", "External disks" is ticked. I've tried unmounting the drives using Disk Utility, then mounting them again, but they still don't appear. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

Create a new admin user account, log into it, setup Finder's prefs to show all HDs, and see if the issue persists.

  • Flash Drive not appearing on desktop

I plugged in my flash drive and it was working and showed up on my desktop like normal, but I ejected it improperly and now it's not showing up on the desktop and when I plug it in it gives me this message: The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer. The optionsit gives me are Eject, Ignore, or Initialize. Please help.

Sounds like when you ejected it improperly, the flash drive was corrupted. Try to reformat it in Disk Utility.
This will of course erase everything that was on the flash drive.

  • Serial ATA internal drive not mounting to desktop

I installed a serial ATA Seagate Barracuda 7200.9 Hard Drive - 300GB in my G4 MDD. I had previously installed a 120GB Seagate SATA drive into this same computer and it was immediately mounted onto the desktop after rebooting. However, that didn't happen this time. The drive installed easily but it is not mounting on the desktop. It is attached to the same PCI card as the other SATA drive. When I open disk utility, it does not show up as a SATA drive but as an ATA drive and it says it is not S.M.A.R.T compatible. What have I done wrong in connecting this drive???? Any suggestions would be most helpful

    Hi
If I remember correctly Seagate initially shipped the 7200.9 drives with something called Spread Spectrum Clocking (SSC) enabled. This isn't supported by most PCI SATA cards (or inbuilt SATA controllers come to that) and the drive won't work. I think Seagate made a utility available to switch if off, but it was Windows only and the drive had to be installed in a PC first.
I'm not sure whether this is the cause of your problem, but more info can be found here:

  • Firefox runs in background (appear in Task Manager Processes Tab) only and does not appear on Desktop

I have been using Firefox on my Desktop PC with Windows XP for a long time. However, today possibly due to some virus (I attached an infected flash drive to my PC) a suspicious change in homepage (www.delta-homes.com) of my firefox occurred. Simultaneously an error message of "WinZip" appeared on screen. I figured that there must be some software in "C:\Program Files\" which is also causing problem to my firefox. I opened Program Files and removed that folder named WinZip. (Tried to uninstall it but it won't happen so I had to use "Unlocker" to kill processes this folder was associated with and then deleted the folder.)
From that point onward, My FireFox started to behave weird. Whenever I click on Firefox icon or access firefox.exe from any source (start menu, quick launch, program files, Run Command), it starts but appears only in "Task Manager Processes Tab". In that Processes Tab, firefox.exe is continuously using 50% of CPU but it does not appear on Desktop at all.
To go a step further, I uninstalled firefox and tried to re-download from Firefox official website but the download fails in the start saying "Download is interrupted". (See attached Image). So I downloaded a previous version of Firefox (v 34.0) from www.filehippo.com and installed it but the same problem is happening with this version too.
I am confused and surprised what might be causing this problem. Everything else on PC running fine. Kindly help me restore my Firefox so that I may not lose any precious Bookmarks, Settings and other Data. thanks

  • Firewire icon does not appear on desktop

My Firewire is connected and turned on but it's icon does not appear on desktop. I ran disk utility and the drive's icon appears there. I can run repair tests on it but not a permissions test. When I checked "Get Info" I noticed a line that reads "OWNER ENABLED: NO". What Can I do--I have a lot of important files on the drive and need to access them. I have also run 3rd party disk utilities that say the firewire drive and all files are 'ok' but still I am not able to access it in any way.

If disk utility sees the drive then you should be able to choose it from the list and click "Activate" (or "Mount" or whatever it says in English )

Firewire drive not visible on desktop
    System profiler knows it's there.
Disk Utility indicates that it can be un-mounted (only a generic 'turned down page' for volume icon however), Disk has full Hard Drive logo...
But I cannot access it on this machine, but plug it into another and it's ok...

(only a generic 'turned down page' for volume icon however), Disk has full Hard Drive logo...
You can see that appearance in Disk Utility if the volume permissions are such that the current user has "No Access."
Since it can be accessed normally from another machine, connect it there and do a Get Info from Finder, looking at the Ownership and Permission Details at the bottom. Assuming this is not a startup disk, if any of the permissions is set to "No Access", change it to "Read and Write". Don't click "Apply to enclosed items" however.

Yes....It happens all the time. I also erased my HD and installed Snow Leopard but with no success. Tried lots of REBOOTING but nothing worked for me.As I have already installed the new OSX I think there is no need to go through the below procedure. What do you suggest?
Before you go through the ritual of reinstalling the entire system just try to do a "factory reset" of your bluetooth environment. To do this you need to run the Bluetooth Explorer which is a utility installed as part of XCode.
    1. Launch Bluetooth Explorer.
    2. Select the "Modify Software & Device Configuration" from the Utilities menu.
    3. Keep the first 4 checkboxes checked (one will say "Full factory reset").
    4. Click "Perform actions" button (lower right of window).
    5. Reboot (possibly the Reboot NOW button will work, if not just do a normal reboot).
Hopefully that will clear your problem(s) so you can re-pair your bluetooth devices.
    Good luck.

  • Iphone icon does not appear on desktop

iphone icon does not appear on desktop when plugged into my mac, so I can't select it to manage music via the sync method.

Lyssa - Thank you for your response. I thought that might be the case, but although there is a symbol in the upper right corner that reads "iPhone"  the list of music is my entire iTunes list. I would like to update my music on the phone but can't seem to "see" what is currently there when plugged into my iMac. It all used to be so much easier and user friendly.

  • Internal Hard Drive Not Appearing in Finder

I just had to do a reboot of my Mac Pro as Final Cut Pro kept locking up and when the computer was back up, one of my Western Digital 2 TB internal hard drives is missing!  When I restart, I got a message saying something like the disc inserted cannot be used.  It had 3 options and the first time I hit eject thinking it was talking about a DVD, then when I rebooted again I hit the details button and it pulled up Disk Utility.  I can see my HD in the menu but when I click on it is says unmounted.  The other 2 TB WD Hard drive is working fine.  Do I need to click on the verify disk or repair disk button?  What should I do? I have quite a bit of video footage on this drive that is missing so I'm super worried I will lose the videos!

    etcetera25 wrote:
The drive is a goner otherwise though.  Since I was solely using this failed drive recently, I may have just worn it out, which is too bad, even though I worked with an identical 2 TB WD internal drive earlier this year and never had problems with that one.
Drives shouldn't just wear out from use, at least not in a reasonable number of years. They are designed for that. Drives however do fail. However, that drive is more likely to be badly corrupted than it is to be mechanically failing. When you are finished grabbing the data off it, use Disk Utility to zero it out. If it can successfully be zeroed out then it is most likely fine to continue to use.

  • Finder & Dock do not work - Mac Hard Drive does not appear on Desktop

Until yesterday, my powerbook was working properly.
This morning, I wanted to use it and I had the following problems after login.
1/ My Mac Hard drive does not appear on my dekstop
2/ My dock appears but no icon works when I click on them. So, I can't open finder. I have no response.
3/ Furthermore, my top bar (with clock, login name, Airport icon...) appears but it is frozed.
I try several solutions as :
    - rebooting in safe mode,
    - rebooting, with in the same time, hold different keys (option, apple, p & R)...
As of today, no solution works.
    Thanks for your help.

Ok, that's good enough. You may be able to repair this with the 10.5.8 Combo Update This is a fuller install, as opposed to an incremental "delta" update so it should overwrite any files that are damaged or missing. It does not matter if you have applied it before.
Remember to Verify Disk before update and repair permissions after update from /Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility.
    EDIT:
I have around 5 Go space left on my Mac
Also, your getting very low on disk space. Try to copy some of the data off to other media. *Do it before you try applying the combo, you'll need the space.*

  • Disk icon does not appear on Desktop, nor in Finder

    I have 4 disk drives:
    2 internal
1 external (FireWire) divided into 2 partitions
Only 3 of 4 drive icons appear on my desktop or in the Finder.
I have this info from Terminal:
    <pre>DavePowerMac1800:/ davebarnes$ ls -aol /Volumes
    total 16
    drwxrwxrwt 7 root admin - 238 Feb 22 17:34 .

    drwxrwxr-t 34 root admin - 1258 Feb 22 14:30 GTechBootable60GB</pre>
The missing icon belongs to DavesGTech173GB.
As a side note, Path Finder (from CocoaTech) has no trouble finding this drive.
Disk Utility finds the drive and returns this from Verify:
    <pre>Verifying volume “DavesGTech173GB”
    Checking HFS Plus volume.
    Checking Extents Overflow file.
    Checking Catalog file.
    Checking Catalog hierarchy.
    Checking Extended Attributes file.
    Checking volume bitmap.
    Checking volume information.
The volume DavesGTech173GB appears to be OK.
    Mounting Disk
    1 HFS volume checked
    Volume passed verification</pre>
So, how do I get my icon back onto the desktop?
    thanks,
    dave

Not sure I have a "magic answer" but from what you've said, and the fact that it does open just fine with the "open" command, my guess is that the invisible bit for the drive has mysteriously been set. It is there, there is nothing wrong with it, it has mounted just fine. It is just invisible to the Finder. Don't remember seeing a volume with the invisible bit set before, but I have seen many other things, including one poor guy's Applications folder.
There are several ways to fix it, if that is indeed the case. The one I'm most familiar with involves using the Terminal, and the Developer Tools GetFileInfo and SetFile commands. If you don't have them, you can download them here:
    http://homepage.mac.com/francines/.Public/setgetfile.zip
Unzip and either put the two commands somewhere in your PATH or, if you don't know how to do that, you can just drag and drop the command into the Terminal. So if you did that, you would do something like this:
    DavePowerMac1800:/ davebarnes$ /Users/davebarnes/Desktop/setgetfile/GetFileInfo /Volumes/DavesGTech173GB/
Hit return and see what the Terminal reports. I have the commands in my PATH, so when I run the command on a partition I have named OXey, I get this:
    -bash:~francine$ GetFileInfo /Volumes/OXey/
    directory: "/Volumes/OXey/"
    attributes: aVbstClinmed
    created: 08/05/2006 20:08:50
    modified: 02/17/2007 12:00:10
The part you are interested in is the attributes. You'll see the second one is an upper case "V"--meaning it is invisible (I made it invisible for the purposes of this demonstration). To bring it back into view you use the SetFile command, with the attribute option and a lower case "v" to unset the invisible bit:
    -bash:~francine$ SetFile -a v /Volumes/OXey/
or yours would be something like this (again presuming SetFile isn't in your PATH, but was downloaded and unzipped on the Desktop):
    DavePowerMac1800:/ davebarnes$ /Users/davebarnes/Desktop/setgetfile/SetFile -a v /Volumes/DavesGTech173GB/
You'll need to relaunch the Finder or log out and back in to see the change.
Of course, if the invisible bit hasn't been set, and GetFileInfo shows the normal lower case v to start with, then this definitely is not the magic answer!

  • Hard drive not showing on desktop in 10.10.3

Well this is an interesting one!  After upgrading to 10.10.3 I no longer see my MAIN Hard Drive (SSD) on the Desktop.  I've checked show HD's in the Finder Preferences; but it's not visibly on the Desktop nor in the Desktop folder when I open that.  It shows in the sidebar and I can make an alias (it shows in the volumes "folder") but where is the actual hard drive itself?  A restart did NOT help--
My 2 other internal HD's (removed the DVD Player 2 years ago and put in my old HD and partitioned it) - they show!
    What is going on?
    Thanks for any ideas…

GENIUS!!  Super!!  Wow this really worked:  I found the com.app.finder.plist right where you indicated, dragged it to the desktop, (closed all other apps first) then did a restart.  It was not there at first, but I went to FINDER/Preferences and checked Show HD's (which had been checked before but was NOT checked this time) and as soon as checking all my HD's showed INCLUDING THE MAIN SSD with my startup disk.
    REALLY GREAT!!!!!
I did have to reset a few finder preferences -- but I learned something:  I can now use TotalFinder with Tabs (just super - can connect 2 windows and more - much better than the Yosemite tabs) -- BUT NOW IT SEEMS I can have subtabs using the Yosemite tabs.  Really neat - I have, for example, 4 Main TotalFinder tabs set and put about 5 subtabs under each.  Those are my 20 MAIN folders that I use all the time.  Now I have 2-3 other TotalFinder Tabs that I'll use for other things (so as not to mess-up my 4 MAIN tabs).
This is just a great example of my new philosophy (since 2001 when I lost a job and did this):  TAKE A NEGATIVE AND TURN IT INTO A POSITIVE.
Well I could not have discovered all this, WOULD not have discovered this without this issue today and especially not without your help, keg55 and of course the assistance of everyone here today!!  REALLY APPRECIATE IT!!!
    Best regards,
