Partition problems for OSX upgrade! YIPES!!

Hello,
I have an original bondi blue imac with an upgraded 466mhz chip and a 40G harddrive. I have performed all of the tasks required to upgrade to OSX
I have acquired the system on BLACK Cds (10.3.5)
I have upgraded my firmware
I have backed up my files
I have partitioned the drive with one partition being 8G the other whatever is left.
and THEN I have inserted the disk 1 into the drive and proceeded.
but I was returned the message "neither of your partitions is in the first 8G of the drive" so I assumed that I had mistaken the picture and that the top was the end of the drive not the beginning so I repartitioned the drive and now when I puyt the disk 1 in and start again I just get two exclamation marks and cannot click either of them.
what am I doing wrong?
It has been such a long journey for me to get to this point I am pretty zen about it but I am getting closer and closer to FLIPPING OUTOUOUTOUTOU!!
smiles
and thanks for any help that you can give me!!

Make the first partition 7.8GB. The operative word is under 8 GB. You should be good-to-go from there.
It's confusing!

  • Audition for Mac problems since OSX upgrade

    Hello,
I upgraded from Leopard to Snow Leopard and I now can't record or playback anything in Audition.  Everything seems fine in the Audio hardware preferances window but in the Audio Channel mapping window it says Device query failed.
    i hope someone can help
    Chris

This may be a known issue that can sometimes occur when upgrading OS X.  The quickest solution is to open Finder and navigate to /Library/Preferences/  and delete or rename the file  com.apple.audio.AggregateDevices.plist
Launch Audition and OS X should rebuild this file.  You may need to configure your audio devices once more in Audition's preferences dialog, but usually this is not necessary.  Also note that this file is located in the main /Library folder on your hard drive, NOT the one in your Users folder.

  • Questions re: Partitioning HD for OSX & OS9x

I have a Beige G3, MT, 300mhz, rev.1, with an 4GB Ultra SCSI Quantum Viking WSE that is basically a goner now. I bought a Seagate Ultra ATA/100 7200 RPM 160GB hard drive to replace it, and need a little advice about how to partition it. (bought the 160GB before I learned that, as an internal drive, my Beige will only see about 127GB - oh well, live and learn....).
For a while I need to continue to use OS9 for quite a few Apps & external devices. Also, I do a lot of graphic & web work so there's a lot of revising of files going on on my machine.
After browsing through the posts here, I still have some questions:
    Q. Since my computer will only be seeing 127GBs out of 160, what happens to the rest of the "unseen" 33GBs? If, for instance, I format this drive today and then get a controller card or move it to a FW case later, what happens with the previously "unseen" GBs? Do they just get added on to the last partition? Will I have to reformat the whole drive again?
    Q. Is it a good or bad idea to put the OS9 Classic system folder on a separate partition from OSX? What would be the pros or cons with this? (I plan on mostly using the regular OS9x on a separate partition for a lot of my Apps and such to avoid the conflicts with Classic that I've heard about, and until I get all my software & devices upgraded to OSX).
    Q. I read some posts where some people don't think partitioning is a good idea, but since it looks like I'm going to have to do it anyway in order to install Tiger, I figured I would probably go ahead and partition the rest of the drive The list below might look like over-kill, but from what I've read, this type of set-up seems to minimize and confine disk fragmentation & corruption which seems to me to be a plus - any cons to this?
    Q. Also, does this order of partitioning seem ok? (I came up with this configuration after reading some info at these sites: http://www.sciencequest.org/support/computers/mac/topics/partitioning.html and http://www.themacintoshguy.com/mactips/archive/tip11.shtml
    Partition 1: 7.95GB - OSX (Tiger)
Partition 2: 10GB - Scratch Disk (for Photoshop scratch disk, scanner captures, burning CDs, downloading, browser cache, etc. - in essence, no files reside here).
    Partition 3: 5GB - OS9x (original)
    Partition 4: 5GB - OS9x Classic
Partition 5: 10GB - Temp/Work area (Unlike the "Scratch" partition, files/projects may reside until completed)
    Partition 6: 50GB - Docs & Resource Library
    Partition 7: 5GB - Email
    Partition 8: 20GB - Apps
Partition 9: 7.95GB - Emergency OSX system, & OSX repair utilities (Disk Warrior, & Drive Genius).
    Partition 10: 5GB - Emergency OS9 system, & OS9 repair utilities, (DW & Norton).
All recommendations, opinions and tips are greatly appreciated.

    Kathleen:
The tech forum in the ExPostFacto site (http://forum.macsales.com/) has a number of extensive discussions about partitioning and recommendations. I suggest you look there for additional discussion by people with far more expertise than me.
I do remember a couple of points from my reading in that forum.
    1) If things go awry in an attempted EPF installation, under certain conditions it can alter or cause problems in the System 9 being used at the time. Having a separate partition for a duolicate System 9 for EPF to use would protect your regular working system in the event of such a mishap.
I believe one recommendation indicated you could just drag and drop your existing System 9 from your internal drive onto a new partition, even on an external drive, in order to create such a separate System for EPF use.
    2) You may wish to have a separate System 9 partition for use as a helper disk for EPF to use.
    3) You may wish to have a separate System 9 partition to use for System X to designate as a classic environment.
    4) You may wish other partitions for applications, data/documents, etc.
As I recall, most of the detailed recommendations (I believe I saw at least 3 different such messages during my travels at that site) included a first partition of >8GB for System X, two other separate partitions (several GB) for System 9, one for desigantion as classic mode under System X, the other for use by EPF in installing and also (if necessary) as a helper disk.
If I have recapitulated this information incorrectly I trust others will set you straight. In any event, I recommend you take a close look at the EPF tech forums - a search for partitioning should yield rapid results of very helpful information. Hope this helps - Good luck!

  • Partitioning Problem for non-techie

    Hey guys,
So I'm trying to install windows, and each time I used the Boot camp assistant, and start partitioning the drive so that I give Windows 32 GB, I get the follow error "Some files could not be moved" and "Back up the disk and use Disk Utility to format it as a single Mac OS Extended (Journaled) volume. Restore your information to the disk and try using Boot Camp Assistant again." Why is this happened? And what does that mean? What should I do?
I should add that I've never partitioned the disk before, so I don't know why it says my hard drive is not a single volume.
    Thanks

    No problem Stephan,
Thanks a lot for your help by the way and sorry for taking so long to grasp this concept. Ok, so once I copy my internal hard-drive to my external, and then boot off of my external, do I wipe my entire inner hard drive, by using disk utility and click restore? Will that delete everything on my internal? And then I copy my external to my internal. And then I run bootcamp?
After booting of the external HD you just have to run SuperDuper (or CCC) again an copy/clone your external HD to your internal HD.
The content of your internal HD would be deleted during the process, so no need to do it manually.
Why can't I just delete my internal hard drive and then reset it so its like I'm turning on my computer on for the first time, set up anew user account, set up bootcamp (my hard drive will basically be empty). Then once windows is all set up. Setup a new user account and use time machine to make that new user account like the one I'm using now?
I admit that I haven't ever used Time Machine, because I use SuperDuper for backup and don't need Time Machine.
Nonetheless you might use Time Machine for your purpose as well.
Boot of the OSX Leopard DVD that came with your Mac )holding down the 'C'-key at startup and from the Top Menu first use Disk Utility to reformat your internal HD and the choose 'Restore System from Time Machine'
(Both are to be found in the 'Utilities' section of the Top Menu).

  • T500 Driver crash problem, for all upgrading owners

To all the T500 Owners who have upgraded to windows 7. There is one major problem hindering a lot of t500 owners. Someone mentioned earlier in this thread to download the catalyst 9.9 drivers from ATI.  Everything else has worked great and all the drives have automatically been updated smoothly.
They install properly but after a restart this is what happens as mentioned by another user
"Hi I have a big problem with my lenovo T500. I installed Windows 7 RC x64 to my lenovo T500 (2082-53G) and when I install the ATI catalyst beta driver v9.9 from ATI's homepage, my computer freezes at startup (some activity on HD but I can't move my mouse and many processes faile to start at boot). I'm not the only one facing this problem: Lenovo T500 Thinkpad - WDM Radeon 3650 Driver Update Causes Screen to Freeze"
I have the exact same problem.... have formatted twice already, gone into safe mode, theres no getting around this problem.
Any help? I have the 32 bit version of windows 7 enterprise 90 day trial.
I know we might not be able to swtich the graphic cards, but at the very least we should be able to pick one in bios and  be forced to use that.  At this point its not even allowing me to install the discrete driver.

    Hi SuperWoofer,
Thanks for your sharing. You're very helpful indeed! =)

  • Best partition procedure for OSX speed

When my new MBP comes in I want to partition the 320 drive into a 40 gig for Vista, a 30 gig for scratch, +/or alternate start up disc, and the rest for OS X and all my programs. When you start up the disc utility it does not say what partition is located in the fastest disc section. How can one be assured to put OS X into this partition location? Is it the top one or bottom on the disc partition set up screen?? Or maybe it will automatically be the largest partition?

I wonder why one needs bootcamp assistant at all.
For the same reason they need other assistants or "wizards": to simplify & make more convenient what could otherwise only be done with more complex methods that require greater technical knowledge or more time to do. Boot Camp Assistant provides "one stop shopping" for file system & other checks, step-by-step installation instructions, initial creation of the Windows partition, & setting the Windows installer disk as the startup disk. And like many other assistants, it does not offer all the possible options to keep things simple.

If you don't use boot camp, then generally you must reformat the partition when you install windows,
but that is usually a moot point because most people prefer an NTFS file system and typically format
    the partition anyway.
To be clear about it, you must use Boot Camp (which is primarily the set of drivers & other software that allow Windows to use the Mac's hardware) if you want a fully functional Windows environment, but you don't have to use Boot Camp Assistant to set up the installation. As for what file system most people prefer, it depends on the Windows version (don't use FAT32 for Vista!) & on whether or not users want to write to the Windows partition from OS X (OS X reads from but does not write to NTFS).
    The only time it
be a real problem is if you wanted a fat32 partition larger than 32GB. ipartition can handle those
chores though, ipartition allows you to shrink or expand msdos partitions.
A FAT32 partition larger than 32 GB might be a problem in other respects. MS says larger ones encounter unacceptable slowness & inefficiencies, which is why (so the company says) that the Windows 2000 & later formatter program imposes that limit. Third party utilities can get around this, of course, but I believe fragmentation issues mitigate against everyday use of the larger FAT partitions.

Reboot the machine holding Command and r keys down, you'll boot into Lion Recovery Partition
In there will be Disk Utility, use that to select your Lion OS X Partition and Repair Permissions.
After that is done reboot the machine and see if you can log in.
If not repeat the above steps to get into Lion Recovery, get online and reinstall Lion again, it will overwrite the installed version and hopefully after that it wil work.
    Reboot and try again.
If not follow my steps to create a Snow Leopard Data Recovery drive, then option boot from it and grab a copy of your files off the machine.
Then reinstall all your programs onto the external drive like setting up a new machine, then use Disk Utility to erase the entire internal boot drive (select the drive media on the far left, not the partiton slightly indented) format Option: GUID , 1 partition OS X Extended and then use Carbon Copy Cloner to clone the external to the newly formatted internal drive. Once that is finished reboot and disconnect the external drive.
Once you go that, boot into Snow Leopard and update to 10.6.8, use the AppStore and option click on Purchases and download Lion again and install.
Lots of work, but there is no Lion disks.

  • How to partition 120 GB hard drive MacBook for OSX+Win (BC+Par.)? Fat/NFTS?

After many happy years with my PowerBook G4 12" (I will miss it definitely, as compact and cute as it is ;-() I'll now switch to a new MacBook 2.16 GHz with 2 GB RAM and a 120 GB hard drive.
I will have to use Windows (not yet sure if XP or Vista), as I need special software not available for the Mac, so my choice will be Parallels, so that I can work in Os X and at the same time use those Windows Apps I need.
However, I also want to be able to boot Windows-only with BootCamp, so I already learned I have to install Windows on its own partition.
    So my question is:
How shall I partition the hard drive?
    * If I have one big partition for OSX + documents and the rest (maybe 30 or 40 GB) for Windows, I won't be able to access my documents from Windows, right?
    * So I would have to keep the data I want to access from within Windows on a PC formatted partition (if I don't want to pay for a software like MacDrive)?
Or can Windows running in Parallels read from a HFS partition?
    * Does this mean: if I want to access (read and write) my documents in OSX and Windows, I have to keep them on a Fat32 partition?
-> This could be the partition where Windows is installed (but I'm not sure if I feel comfortable with that solution) of I would need a 3rd partition (Fat32) for data which would cause quite a big "segmentation" of the hard drive.
How did you resolve this problem?
Unfortunately, I don't see that I could really "separate" data I only have to access from Windows and those I only want to access in OS X, so in my opinion for me they all have to be in one place.
    Looking forward to your comments,
    Martin

I'm installing windows 7 64-bit on my imac which I've done before but I get a message that the partition is GPT even after I format the bootcamp partition.  I just upgraded my hard drive to a 3tb and I'm allocating 1tb for windows. How can I fix this?

No easy fix for a few reasons:
    1) Bootcamp requires a hybrid MBR for the partition table. That is: both an MBR and a GPT partition table at the same time with the GPT one having all partitions and the MBR one having only the ones that are relevant, but at most 4 of them (including the protective partition and the Macintosh HD one). Which leads us to:
    2) The MBR part of the hybrid partition table cannot work with 3TB hard drives. MBR is limited to 2TB.
I am working on a small EFI app that can boot Windows in EFI mode on a Mac and that would mean that you can go GPT only on your system. The progress of the app is slow due to the nature of EFI and for now requires that you do an unattended Windows install with slipstreamed graphics drivers, but we are adding VGA loading on top of EFI quite soon after the rest of the app stabilises. The status of the app is documented at:
Win7 x64 booting natively via EFI (no bios emulation)
Windows does actually successfully boot in EFI mode on most Macs (anything with a 64bit EFI should work), but does not have graphics support even if you load the driver due to the VGA pci registers not being set by the firmware. Furthermore, in Setup and Safe Mode, Windows uses VGA instead of GOP which is a failure by design since VGA is a BIOS standard and not really compatible without hacks with EFI. Other EFI implementations also add VGA compatibility at a high cost to the firmware complexity for the VGA cards available on the market that don't actually contain anything in their ROM except the VGA BIOS.
    My recomendations:
    1) Install on a second smaller hard-drive; or
    2) Wait for the EFI app to come out officially and use that to boot Windows Vista SP1 x64 and Windows 7 x64 (RTM and SP1) in the native EFI mode.
    3) Wait for Windows 8 which supports VGA-less booting acording to the AMD presentation at UEFI Plugfest.

  • WTK SDK 3.0 for OSX problem with capturing audio, emulator

    Hello all,
i'm installed the WTK SDK 3.0 for osx and everything works well. Some test applications also work.

I want to capture some audio form the microphone. But when i do so the Emulator strikes with this error:
javax.microedition.media.MediaException: Player cannot be created for capture://audio
so i tried this: System.getProperty("supports.recording") and it returns false. But when i read over the specification of the WTK it says that it should support the Audio capturing. Is this error based on the implementation of the WTK on OSX or have some Windows users also the same problem?

Mac OS X 10.6 includes QuickTime versions 10.0 and 7.6.3. The QuickTime 7 player will only be present if a QuickTime Pro key was present at the time of installation, or if specified as part of a custom install, or individually downloaded:
