Partition size help.

What is the final c: drive size on this computer(640gb hard drive) after all of the setup? I installed a linux distribution to dual boot, but then decided to delete it and want to make sure that the partition I made for this isn't just sitting there wasting hard drive space.
This question was solved.

A 640 gb hard drive as sold by the manufacturer shows up as just under 600 gb to Windows, i.e about 596 gigs.

The lead-in above pretty much states the problem. I am attempting to install Windows 7 from a disk, but that is not the issue. Boot Camp 5 just quits and reopens. I then repeat. Help.

I am about to run specialized GIS software that may or may not need the full machine resources. I am an attorney who uses QuickBooks for my accounting. The Mac version does not do as much as the Windows version. This is from both Apple and Quick Books professionals. I am using Parallels Desktop version 8 at this time. It does not support QuickBooks Windows version per Parallels. Any other questions? I am a highly competent PC user who is new to Macs. I am entitled to my own configuration choices. That said, I know when I need help which is now.
As to the free space issue I have 665.18 GB free space out of 749.3 GB on the drive. I am not trying to run the 32 bit version. I know that it requires the 64 bit version. Besides, it does not get that far in the process. As I said Boot Camp asssitant terminates unexpectedly as soon as you hit the continue button after setting the partition size. Therefore I conclude that it does not have a chance to see which version of Windows that I am using. I am using Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit version in the virtual engine (to use Parallels speak), but again Boot Camp would not see that since it is not running. It can't run at the momenet because Apple just installed a new hard drive and I have just restored the data from TIme Machine and Parallels needs reactivated, which I have not done yet deliberatley. With all of this addtiional information do you have any further suggestions? Thanks for your time and interest my issue.

  • Boot Camp Partition Size/External HDD recommendation

After updating software, hardware, downloading Boot Camp Asst, and installing Windows XP Pro (have not yet downloaded Mac drivers or software, nor have I submitted registration of my WinXP Pro software, still have 29 days), I realized that I set the partition size too small and need to resize it. I read in other postings that I can copy the Windows partition to an external HDD from the Mac OSX side, then run Boot Camp again, delete the "too small" Windows partition, then run Boot Camp again and reset the partition size larger. Does anyone have detailed instructions to do this?
Also, can anyone suggest an external HDD for this purpose? I need to be able to share files between a PC and my 17" MBP running OS X 10.4.6. Specifically, I need to share (for editing purposes) audio files created with PC-based software with the Windows side of my MBP. The PC has XP Pro and MacDrive6 for Windows installed. I read the "Sharing a FireWire drive between Mac and PC" document on "The X Lab" website and, based on this, am leaning toward getting a FW (not USB) HDD and formatting it in Mac OS Extended format (not sure how to do this but cross that bridge when I get there). Does this sound reasonable? When I run Boot Camp again and have to choose between NTSF and FAT32 should I choose NTSF? Will I also need "SharePoints" or other software to share the Mac's FW drive with the PC?
I may have the option to share and backup files over the workplace network (if I take the time to set it up). Does anyone know if there advantages/disadvantages to this option?
Thanks for answers to these questions. Any help would be very much appreciated. Best!

  • How to set desired partition size on Satellite C850-12D with W7 Pro?

    Hi all,
I recently got a new laptop, Satellite Pro C850-12D with Seven Pro: the disk (500 Gb) is initially partitionned like this:
    - a small hidden, 1.46 Gb
    - the C: one, 449.47 Gb (visible by the user)
    - a hidden one, 14.83 Gb
I would reduce the C: partition to 100 Gb in order to create a new one for DATA.
So, I begin the process using the Seven tools for disk managing but the disposable size after reduction seems limited to a max of 226.685 Gb: C remains higher or equal to 233 570 Gb.
I tried defragmentation of C but its minimal size remains 233 570 Gb
Is there a method to overcome this limit and achivce my goal of 100 Gb?

    Hi
Before changing some partitions on the HDD I strongly recommend creating a Recovery disk!
The Toshiba recovery media creator helps you to create such disk and this is needed in cases something would be wrong with your HDD.
    Back to partition issue:
You will need to use an 3rd party tool like *Gparted* in order to change the partition size.

  • Changing partition size and migrating to Leopard

My iMac currently runs OS 10.9 and has boot camp installed, but I chose a Windows partition size that was too small (only a few GB, enough to install Windows XP). I am now want to increase the size of the Windows partition and to install Leopard. What is the best order for me to change the partition size and install the new system? If the disk needs to be wiped clean to do this, what is the best way to back up the existing data and then to reinstall it. Would I use migration assistant?

If your beta Boot Camp Assistant hasn't expired, you COULD do this before you upgrade to Leopard. If it has, you can play games with the date, or you can do this after you're on Leopard.
Either way, if your partition is FAT32 you can back it up using Disk Utility, according to other posts (see especially backup/clone discussions in the beta discussion forum); if it's NTFS, Winclone is probably the way to go. If it's a real small partition, though, you might just start over, or back up only what's "yours".
On either the beta or Leopard, you'd want to back up or clone the current Boot Camp partition, remove it using BCA, create the new larger partition using BCA, and then restore the contents.
None of this requires wiping the MAC OS disk, it DOES essentially wipe out the WINDOWS disk. I don't think Migration Assistant helps here, but certainly haven't tried that.

  • Expanding windows 7 partition size ...

    Hello,
I did some searching around and found several opinions / answers to the subject. I'm not sure which direction to take - one option being Paragon's CapTune software, and the other being the Disk Management Utility in Windows 7, which should allow you to expand the disk.
The reason for me posting is two-fold. I attempted the Disk Management option, and found that the 'Extend Volume' option is not available for my Bootcamped drive. I was wondering if anyone had any thoughts on this and why it wouldn't work.
Also, any opinions on CampTune would be great.
What about VMWare Fusion? Could this alone expand a partition size?
I know this is a topic that has been spoken about (probably quite a bit), but I was hoping to get some more personal feedback. What is the best way to do this? If the answer is start over with Bootcamp, that is also acceptable.
    Thank you,

Paragon. I'd buy the full Paragon Hard Disk Manager™ 2011 Suite
That includes cloning Windows to SSD, to another drive, CampTune (resizing) and HFS access. I used it over the weekend to move Windows to an SSD (but that was using dedicated drives, not hybrid Windows on Mac setup. Took all of 20 minutes and able to boot.
So you can always try backup both OS systems, and then restore each.
I'd say post on their forum, but threads and questions seem to go unanswered or very little activity and input, and of course quiet for 2 weeks holidays.
VMs are a totally different animal and nothing to help or do with partitioning.

  • Partition Question- Help

    Hi Folks,
I have a MacPro with an external firewire 800 drive, the drive has 2 partitions, one with the boot backup the other with my work backup, however i need to resize the partitions without loosing the data (even though there is always a risk)
Can i do this with Disk Utility? Or maybe ipartition or drive genius?
    Any help greatly apprictated!
    Cheers

The answer is yes, sort of.
It is possible to change a partition size using the command line version of disk utility, however, most people will not be comfortable using the terminal application and the command line. Also, to resize a partition with the disk utility tools you need to know a few bit of details about the partition locations and offsets... So I would suggest a third party application to do the partition size change.
However there is a third alternative...
You can copy (if there is enough room) the data from your external partitions to your Macs hard drive, then reformat and repartition the external as you want it. Finally copy the data back.
Anyway, as I said, I think the third party partition resizing tools are your best choice.

  • Partition size in bootcamp

Very basic question but I can't seem to find an answer to this. I want to decrease the size of the partition for Bootcamp. How can I do that? As well, If I want to delete Windows as well as Bootcamp, how can I do that also? Thanks for any help I can get.

    Hi and welcome to Discussions,
For changing the partition size of a BootCamp Windows partition CamTune from Paragon http://www.paragon-software.com/home/camptune/ would be my choice.
The completely remove the WIndows partition use the BootCamp Assistant again and choose "revert back to single OSX Volume".
Read the BootCamp Install Guide from inside the BootCamp Assistant or to be found here http://www.apple.com/support/bootcamp/

  • Max GPT partition size for Windows 2008R2

Is the max partition size 256tb -64K? for 64k stripe size?? What is the max?

    Hi Jared,
From Windows Server 2003 SP1, Windows XP x64 edition, and later versions, the maximum raw partition of
18 exabytes can be supported. (Windows file systems currently are limited to 256 terabytes each.)
GPT disks support partitions of up to 18 exabytes (EBs) in size and up to 128 partitions per disk.

  • Growfs: cannot get partition size, Inappropriate ioctl for device

    Hi ,
I am trying to increase the filesystem. I did first
    #metattach d37 1G
d37: Soft Partition has been grown
    and then
    # growfs -M <mount point> d37
devinfo: /dev/md/dsk/d38: Inappropriate ioctl for device
    growfs: cannot get partition size
What is the problem, can anyone help me?
    Thanks in advance,

looking at the response you got an error message for d38, either your have increased the size of the wrong metadevice or you may have forgotten to increase the size of the opposing sub mirror plex, if d37 and d38 form a mirror, you need to post a metastat and a df -k, to allow us to see what your config is.

  • HT3777 Reducing Boot Camp partition size

I've never used Boot Camp since I bought my MacBook Pro in 2008 since it came with a free VM Fusion program.  I have Boot Camp with nothing in it taking up 33 GB of space and I need the space.  How do I reduce the Boot Camp partition size?

  • Disk Utility - smallest partition size

I have new 500 GB external drive. Using Disk Utility I created GUID partition schema and created 4 partition - 3 x Mac OS Extended (Journaled) a 1 x FAT32 (initially with same size). Disk Utility doesn't let me resize 1st partion (the highest one) and 4th partition (the lowest one) smaller then cca. 50 GB (divider with 2 arrows changed to divider with 1 arrow). (I don't know if it's possible with other partitions to size them smaller then cca. 50 GB since I want them have large and I use disk already.) I didn't find anything about this in help, books or internet.
Is there limit in Disk Utility about minimum partition size? (It looks like cca. 10 % from drive size).

    V.K. wrote:
it looks like DU will not allow you to create a partition smaller than one tenth of the disk size.
when i do it on a 200GB drive the smallest size it let's me make is 20Gb, and for a 500GB drive it's 50GB.
I guess that's a safeguard against creating too many partitions.

I thought so. Like most filesystems, all the information must be stored in the bootsector or whatever it's called with BSD, and the total number of files is related to the sizes and total numbers of partitions, so like FAT32 or even NTFS, HFS has it's practical and theoretical limits.
I believe HFS has two bootrecords or equivalents, one for backup and this adds to the storage space issue.
Going back to the old 1.44MB floppies, the unformatted size was over 1.7 MB and Norton and MS took advantage of that, but not all disk readers were happy with what they did. MS once shipped Windows on a set of 1.7 MB floppies. Of course this was BC (before CDs).

  • 1.8TB Hitachi HDS722020:  "Partition size is not a multiple of 4K"

I picked up a 1.8TB Hitachi HDS722020 external USB drive, for an enlarged Time-Machine disk. The box says that it's usable on a Mac, but Disk Utility doesn't seem to like it.
When I attempt to erase it, it sits there, indefinitely as far as I can tell, trying to format it saying, "Partition size is not a multiple of 4K." I am able to format it as MS-DOS FAT32, but not in any MacOS (Extended) format.
Since it seems to be complaining about partition sizes, I was able to it into one partition containing almost all of the disk content, and another, "junk" partition that I presumably won't use very often. Unfortunately, the smallest "junk" partition it would let me create was about 190GB.
So, waddaya folks think? Should I return it to the store as a bad disk, or is there any reason to think that it's behaving in some sense correctly?

    Hello mr88cet
In Disk Utility highlight the external hard drives first icon on the left side list and select the Partition tab. Then decide on the # of partitions you want, then click the Option box and set the Partition map Scheme to GUID Partition Table. Now then you should be able continue to on with any multiple partition sizing (if more than 1 was selected) and format the drive Mac OS Extended (Journaled)...
Just follow the Disk Utility prompts, it's really easy after you've done it a time or two.

  • Maximum Partition Size for External Drive using DU

    Hello,
I just purchased a 750g Maxtor USB drive for use with Time Machine. When I went into DU to partition and format the drive I was surprised to find that every time I went to create a single partition using all available space, the operation would error out. I was however able to create two partitions with the largest one sized around 650g or so. I was using the Mac file system.
This just seems odd to me. Does OS X have a maximum allowable partition size that prevents me from creating one large partition?
    Thanks,
    Robert

    Hi Robert
You should be able to delete the partition, try again using the instruction in the following article:
