Partition Time Capsule?

Can I partition my Time Capsule so it uses 500 gigs for back ups and I can use the other 500 gigs for storage?

I have to Enter Time Machine to spin up the drive. Then it appears in Disk Utility.
But I still can't figure out how to have itback up to only one partition. It seems to alternate between the two.

  • Partitioning Time Capsule Error

    Hi and tnxs for reading.
In order to keep 500GB of free space to use my 2TB TC as a WiFi remote HD, I did a partition of my sparsebundle Time Machine Backup on Time Capsule by using Utility Disc.
However at the end of the process I got the msg: "this disk in not writable and cannot be partitioned. This disk is too small to be partitioned".
However, the partition is there since by closing utility disc and reopening it, I have a 1.5Tb partition for my Time Machine.
    Anything wrong?

    I am not really surprised.
    Did you notice the comment.
It may not "stick" on Snow Leopard 10.6.3 and 10.6.4, and on some occasions, Mountain Lion.  But steps 7-10 should prevent that.
So what OS are you trying to do this from??

  • Will partitioning Time Capsule effect my backups?

If I have a 1TB drive and partitioned it 500GB for Time Machine and 500GB for drag&drop, can this have a negative effect on my Time Machine backups?

No, other than limiting the amount of data that can be stored in the Time Machine backups.
However, it is a challenging task to partition the drive on a Time Capsule in a traditional way, since you must pull the drive from the Time Capsule......voiding the warranty on the Time Capsule.....to perform the partitioning operation.
You might want to set up a 500 GB disk image on the Time Capsule drive using Disk Utility on your Mac for your drag and drop storage, then leave the drive "as is", since Time Machine must back up directly to the Time Capsule drive.

  • Should I Partition Time Capsule To Limit Space Consumed By Backups?

I just got a Time Capsule and I want to use it as a file server as well. While it's 3TB and I think that should be fine, my concern is that Time Machine will just keep backing up indefinitely. So over time it would use those 3TB of space. My HD is 250GB and I was thinking of creating a partition of 750GB so there would be plenty of space for TM backups, but it would hit a threshold and not keep eating away at all the space I want to use as a file server. Does all this logic sound right and is this a good idea?

I am only a lowly level 7 but I maybe able to help.
    What OS are you running??
    Mavericks??
Keep your TC name short, no spaces and pure alphanumeric. Indeed all your network names shoud comply with this.
SMB has tighter rules than AFP and now Mavericks has changed to SMB default network.
You can also use AFP however..
Just type AFP://TCname.local (use the domain as well.. that helps). Or use your IP address which should be static.. as per your remote access thread.
AFP://TCIPaddress (where you substitute the actual IP should keep it on the straight and narrow).
Don't forget to save the password in your keychain when asked for it.
    As a BTW..
Some people are finding issues on SMB and using CIFS instead.. apparently there is some issues with SMB implementation on the latest OS.. so using CIFS takes it back to v1 instead of v2. IMHO stick with AFP.

  • Partitioning Time Capsule

I'm about to use my Time Capsule (500GB) for the first time with my MacBookPro (200GB). My plan was to use part of the Time Capsule for drag and drop... most likely just for my iTunes Music which is too big for my internal drive, and I want to enjoy being wireless now, so I don't want it on one of my other external (wired) drives.
1.Do I need to set up a partition to use part of the TC for drag and drop?
2.How much of the 500 GB TC should I reserve for Time Machine?
3.Should I expect much "lag" when listening to music stored on the TC?
On a non related issue, what's the "ideal" security set up for the WiFi part of the TC?
    Thanks in advance,
    Scott

    Hey mate!
In (brackets) you will find some explanations. If you already know what i'm talking about I apologise for the extra hassle.
So this is what you need to do.
First set your MAC to never sleep. You can do that in the energy saver tab under system preferences.
    1. Make sure you have quite some time to spare. (start this on a sunday maybe?)
    2. Connect your TC to your mac with a cat6 Gigabit Ethernet cable.
(it's a fairly cheap cable you can find at any electronics shop. Bear in mind there are different versions of Ethernet cables you want the one for Gigabit coded as cat6 to make sure you get the best speed)
    3. Now you wanna create a few disk images on the hard drive of your TC. As I mentioned previously you dont wanna create one big disk image because large files are easily corrupted. So you wanna spread your free space over a few images.
I have to warn you at this point that a large disk image might get easily corrupted which means that you might lose the data in it. It's NOT common but it CAN happen. Go on only if you're willing to take that risk.
(A disk image is a virtual disk. It is a file whose size you define when creating it and it works just like a real disk, that is to say you double click on it, it mounts and you then have access to its contents.)
    On with the procedure then:
    4. Open Disk Utility (found in the utilities folder inside the applications folder)
    5. Go to File--> New --> New Blank Image
    6. In the Save As field give your image a name
    7. If you see a field named "where" click on the little arrow that shows downwards.
    8. Browse to your TC you can find it on the list on the left of the box under shared and choose where to save your image. (anywhere in your TC is fine)
    9. In the "Volume Name" field give your volume a name (anything)
    10. Choose the size of your image (dont confuse MB with GB)
(About the size: i would recommend images no larger than 100 GB each for the reasons i already mentioned)
    11. Under "Volume Format" you wanna choose MAC OS Extended (journaled)
    12. Encryption "None"
    13. Partitions "Single Partition-Apple Partition Map"
    14. Image format "Read/Write disk image"
    Hit "create" and you're done!!!
Now Disk Utility will create a 100GB disk image on your TC which means your computer will send a 100GB file to the TC (that will take some time)
You can repeat the procedure for as many images you want and let them be created when you go to sleep.
Repeat as required and you're all set
Hope that helps! Let us know how it works out!

  • Partitioned Time Capsule as Media Server for HTPC

I recently made the big switch to Apple - purchasing a Mac Mini, Imac and Time Capsule - and wish to use the Time Capsule to back-up the Imac (in office) via Time Machine and serve media to the Imac and Mac Mini (HTPC). The reason I want to do it this way is because I want to use Front Row to play media via the Mac Mini. I initially had the Mac Mini linked to Itunes media on the IMac (where I currently store all of my music) using Home Share, but every time the Imac went into sleep mode, I would lose access to the media.
I have successfully partitioned the Time Capsule into two virtual drives - one for Time Machine back-ups and one for media to be accessed by the imac and mac mini (no easy feat). I copied all of my media from the Imac to the proper Time Capsule partition. Additionally, I was able to "point" itunes on each computer to the itunes file on the Time Capsule.
The problem is, when one computer is pointed to the Time Capsule, I lose the connection on the other and it diverts back to the old location of the media files. My questions:
    1. Is it possible to do what I am trying to do?
    2. Is there a better way of creating a permanent connection to Itunes between two computers so that I don't lose the connection when they "sleep"? (I tried using the function where the computers would wake on network access, but it didn't seem to work.
    Thanks for you help!

Were you able to do that without physically removing the drive? If so, how?

  • Using an external drive with shared files (iPhoto, iTunes), attached to a Time Capsule, can the contents of the external drive be backed-up to the internal Time Capsule drive? Perhaps a RAID1 mirror to a partition?

Using an external drive with shared files (iPhoto, iTunes), attached to a Time Capsule, can the contents of the external drive be backed-up to the internal Time Capsule drive? Perhaps a RAID1 mirror to a partitioned Time Capsule? I understand that the Time Machine (software) cannot backup a networked drive (the external) and that Time Capsule (the router/wireless hard drive) does not have its own backup software... so it won't backup the connected drive. What I would like is an alternate solution for having an automated backup of a networked drive. A 2TB Time Capsule has more than enough space for Time Machine backups of my family of Macbooks, so I had hoped to mirror a 500GB external drive (with shared media files) to a portion of the Time Capsule internal hard drive. I assume this would require a partition of the Time Capsule drive. If not, would the sparse file from the various computers being backed up need to be copied to the external drive as part of the RAID1 setup? This seems like overkill for the Time Machine backup, but it would cover the media files.

The complexity with this idea is the software has to run from a Mac computer on your network.. so you need a Mac turned on, probably most of the day.
It isn't possible to partition the TC although you can create a image area.
The software would have to copy the material, that means all files to be copied, go from USB drive, back to the Mac, then back to the TC, and written to the drive. In other words you have just added Network congestion, although a proper incremental backup type software will not actually use a lot of capacity.
Finally it will be slow.. network drives are slower than internal drives. Well USB connected drive is much slower than the same drive connected directly to the computer.. and if the drive is connected directly to a computer it can be shared with the network.

  • Time Capsule Erased Window Partition

    Good Morning,
I recently purchased and set up a time capsule with my macbook pro. All worked well, or so i thought until this morning when i went to start my macbook up in the Windows partition. I created this partition about a month or two before i installed the time capsule. Luckily there wasnt much saved on there as the windows partition was not there when i pressed the alt key on start up... Just wondering if this has happened to anyone else and if so, where did it go? and how can i get it back? Can i simply just run boot camp again or will that wipe my time capsule?
    Thanks in Advance!

    Nope, still not making sense.
    First of all..
(although i have been told by apple that you can partition time capsule)
Where did you hear this, a Genius or AppleCare advisor? Because I suspect there is some communication here. You CAN NOT partition a TC.... well... at least not officialy (not going to say any more on that). However, what you CAN DO, is partition an ext drive, and the use Time Machine to backup to one of the partitions on that EXT drive.
When you "installed" the time capsule, I still can't think of any possible way that it woud have DEPLETED your windows partition. The TC is just a physical backup device.
Are you sure you are using the term Time Capsule to represent something else here?

  • Using Time Capsule to store Files

Can I partition Time Capsule to use like a hardrive to store files such as photos and media, or does Time Capsule just function as a backup drive?

How would I go about this?
Once the connection to the Time Capsule is established, look for its icon in the My Computer window and use it as if it was a regular drive. You may need to use the AirPort software for it to show up; this is in the /Applications/Utilities/ folder.

  • Time Machine and file sharing with XP on a Time Capsule

Am I right in thinking that I can't use a Time Capsule to support Time Machine on OS-X and to support sharing files between OS-X and XP at the same time given Time Machine will not run on FAT32 and I can't partition Time Capsule hard drives without taking them to bits, partitioning and re-assembling?

Hi Jonathan and welcome to Discussions,
Drive Genius http://www.prosofteng.com/products/drive_genius.php and iPartition http://www.coriolis-systems.com/iPartition.php claim to be able to repartition without erasing.
Time Machine indeed works only on Mac OS Extended partitions.

  • Time Capsule advice please...

    Hi,
I need a back up solution but would like any thoughts before I go ahead.
I'm thinking of buying a Time Capsule, I want it to back up all of my files from my internal HD, I work alot with video and for this purpose I have 2 external hard drives connected to my MacBP.
Is a Time Capsule the best solution for what I want to do...
    1.Back up Internal HD
2.Back up selected folders only from my external drives(not including video files as they will take up too much space)
    3. I want to move my itunes music separately to Time Capsule(& delete from internal drive) so as to free up space on my internal drive as it's almost full. Is this a good idea as I cannot partition Time Capsule? The reason I would choose Time Capsule over a normal external drive is so I can access the drive from anywhere with an internet connection without having to bring external drive with me...
Are there any problems with using TC as a storage space aswell as in conjunction with time machine?
Is it easy to delete backups from TC when they are say 3 months old and only keep your last months backups as too not fill the TC with months of un-needed backups?
Would love to hear your thoughts and any other recommendations...
    Cheers!

You mean when I go into Time Machine on my Mac, that drive won't show up in the drives to include/omit section?
    Yes, that is correct.
I guess I'm kind of baffled that the Time Capsule is billed as this great backup device, but can't back up the drive that's connected directly to it.
Yes, I would have to agree to that as well. It would be reasonable to expect that it could, but I guess the design goal was aimed more to making it easier for folks to back up their computers as seamless as possible.
Can you recommend a better solution for what I'm trying to accomplish?
Two that come to mind are solutions based on either Microsoft's Windows Home Server or FreeNAS, but either of these would require additional hardware. Both however support Time Machine backups.

  • Can I use Time Capsule for older mac?

    Hello,
I am working on setting up a regular backup plan and am considering getting a Time Capsule so that I can use Time Machine and back up multiple machines all on one unit. I have an older iMac running 10.4.11 which predates Time Machine and was wondering if I could still back up, using carbon copy or something similar onto a Time Capsule? I would assume that I would need and could partition Time Capsule so that I had the one part for the older iMac and the other for the newer Macs that can run Time Machine. Is this possible or is there a better plan?
Thanks for any help you can offer.

    LaPastenague
I honestly don't remember what I used to format the external HD, but I suspect I did it through the disk utility. It was done on an earlier computer so maybe that's why it's not visable on the iMac, although I can see it on my iBook which is running 10.4.11.
On the iMac I can't see the TC under the Server from within the Finder but I can on the iBook even though they are running the same OS version. So I guess I am going to need another backup option other then TC and an external... for this computer.
If I back up using the disk utility or another tool like CCC or superduper, my concern is that the file will be too big for me to put it on CD or DVD's that's what the appeal of the TC is. Is there a way to break it into selections to fit a CD or DVD better?
Also given that my iBook (running 10.4.11) can see TC, can i just drag and drop a backup onto the TC for which I created with another backup tool given that this predates Time Machine.
    Thanks again

  • Can I use Time Machine to backup to partition on external drive and a Time Capsule?

    Trying to plan in advance...
I was wondering if I can (with a laptop) use Time Machine for both:
    1. Creating Time Machine backups on a partiion of an external drive. My plan was going to create  2 partitions: one to be used for Time Machine backups of another external hard drive (that holds all of my media) and then the other partition was going to be a bootable clone of my internal drive (totally separate from Time Machine)
    and
    2. Also use Time Machine for my Time Capsule, to create Time Machine backups of my internal drive.
Is this possible? I had heard that you can't use TM to make backups to a partition on an external drive, AND use it for another drive (like Time Capsule) at the same time. But I would think that this should be possible-
    Thanks everyone-

Yes you can, and if you are using Mountain Lion it's easy.
If you are using Snow Leopard (as in your profile - this is the Mountain Lion forum), you have to manually select the backup volume each time. Tedious, but possible.
Read Apple Support Communities contributor Pondini's FAQ on that subject: "Rotating" Time Machine backup disks

  • I have partitioned my time capsule, but I can't get it to work as a Time Machine back up and permanent media server for both mac and PC. What format do I need to partition the drive to so that it works for both mac and windows and so that it will be visab

I have partitioned my time capsule, as I want part of it to act as a media server for both mac and windows. However I don't know what format that I need to partition it to. I also can't make it a permanently accesible drive. I want to restore the drive to the original format (which I don't know) and start again and re-partition the drive in a format that can be used for media by both mac and PC and for time machine back-ups and make the media part of it permanetly accesible so I can add and acccess my files.
    Thanks

You are mixing up a couple of things here.
The TC drive cannot be partitioned without removing it.. did you do that?
If you partition it you must use a Mac disk utility and use the HFS+ ie standard Mac format. And GUID partition table not windows type.
You can select erase disk in the airport utility.. that will take the disk back to original format. No partitions. TC is deliberately not partitioned as it is not a media server.. it is a backup device for TM. Over time .. the disk will be filled with TM backups so you have a long history of file changes to your computer.
There is no media server in the TC.. it is merely disk storage.. you can serve files from it to a media device.. but the TC itself is dumb as dumb.
Now the actual format of the drive is irrelevant to the PC.. The TC offers SMB file services to the network. You can copy files to and from the TC as if it was a local disk without caring one iota about the format. The TC handles that .. it is not a local disk .. it is a network drive.
Although you cannot partition the TC. you can still copy files to it.. this does have implications for TM.. but as long as there is plenty of free space should not be a major issue.
You can create a disk image via the disk utility in a Mac.. and as stated you can create partitions if you do it on a Mac with the disk directly connected which means breaking warranty if any exists on the TC.

  • How do I Partition my Time Capsule Drive ?

I have a 1-Terabyte Time Capsule (Not POSITIVE if its 3rd Gen or 4th Gen?) but It's less than 2 years old if that helps.
It serves as my Wireless Router in my house. My desktop backed up to it Once (I Think?) and my Laptop is not on Auto, but has 30 or 40 generations of backups out there.
Honestly I kind of just Forgot about having this big storage device out there until recently when (Big Project) my Laptop Drive sunk to 34 MEG (not GIG, MEG !!!) --- and I Panicked. I fiddled around a bit and got the TC to show as a Shared Drive in Finder. THANKFULLY I had NOT been using it in "Auto Backup Mode" because I still had over 600Gig Free and was able to dump MASSIVE Amounts of data files out there. From What I Read in the Info, TM or TC ?? will Continue to back up and Keep EVERY COPY until it runs out of space. Only THEN will it ever start deleting older records. (OK, Its GREAT for data security, but Not so Hot for a "Shared Drive") which is what this has now become for me. The Ability for ANY of my Computers to see and work on the same files has become a MAJOR Bonus thing --- and I'm Not feeling like giving that great feature up. (Ever Try and Move a 100 Gig's of Data with a FLASH DRIVE ?? Not EVER Again ;-)
So what appears to be my Solution would be to Partition the TC so that the backups live in a defined space (I CONTROL) I spent HOURS with the install disk, Utilities and out here trying to find a feature where you can Limit TC, but NADA, You Get Hourly Backup (like it or not) Daily, Weekly, Monthly and who knows, it might even do Yearly ?? But Your going to Get 'em No Matter What and it wont stop till it runs out of Real Estate. So I need to make it's Playground a bit smaller.
I can't get Disk Utility to "SEE" the TC ?? (I Thought I saw it last night ?? but Maybe Not ??) I have re-booted the Computer and Power Cycled the TC but It's Just NOT Going to Show. (Its Still in the Finder and I can Move Data IN & Out and Cross Platform---so its Working Fine, but It Wont Show in Disk Utility)
**OK This Is REALLY Strange** As I am Typing This, TC Just Kicked into a Backup. I Still have the Disk Utility open and the DATA FILE for TC is showing as a DISK?? but the Actual TC Drive is still NOT showing. (Specifically, the Datafile "Name of My Computer.SparseBundle" is showing as a Drive ??)
I got an External HDD and moved all the data OFF of the TC (The Info I saw on Partitioning Indicated that Wiping the Disk was Likely) The Only Thing Left out there is the backup file which Frankly I don't care about. Everything is Fine right now, so If I can Wipe, Partition, Set Back Up and start TC Backups again I will have everything I need.
**OH** I Know I can Hang another drive off of the TC but It's Not a Great option. it is S...L....O....W.... as Dirt going over USB (Really Apple?? USB ?? I have a 12 Year Old G5 Desktop that Not Only Has FireWire 400 but 800 as well----- USB ???)
    Appreciate your Efforts & Thanks

    OK--Post Script Time:
I Searched for this issue and Didn't find an answer, After Posting I got several suggestions that seemed pretty close to the mark, but None went far enough.
The General Consensus seems to be Partitioning is a "NO" via Any Conventional Means.
Alternatives Given we from the Exotic (and Slightly Scary) of Ripping Your TC Open and Yanking the Drive out and formatting it on another computer in some sort of "Housing" to Hacking Suggestions (I have Never had a good experience trying to Hack any of my stuff. I will allow the level of Knowledge needed exceeds mine? but there always seems to be that one Missed Step (Oops) which results in being worse off than before.
The Most reasonable (and Least Scary) option I saw was "Creating a Disk Image and Mounting it like it was a Disk" --- which if I had **ANY**CLUE*** how to do that and what the results would look & feel like I might try----So......
    Opinions on this option?
Experience with the TC with this done to it ?
and 5th Grader Step by Step Insturctions on HOW to do it ??
    Please??
    Thanks
PS: Forget the 5th Grader thing They Probably need LESS Help, Try "Retirement Home Instructions" ;-)
