Partition without losing info ?

Does anyone know if there is some way I can partition my drive so I can install Ubuntu without losing any info I have ? I seem to remember there was a way but...
Thanks

You can add a partition without erasing the drive using Disk Utility (Leopard or Snow Leopard), as long as Disk Utility can move data around on existing partition(s) to create a contiguous space for the new partition. Whether Linux can be installed on a drive that uses +GUID partition table+ as the partition map scheme, I do not know.
However, before doing something like re-partitioning, or installing Linux on the same drive, you need to make a backup of at least your personal data, or even clone the entire Mac startup volume to another drive. It is always possible for something bad to happen.
I run Ubuntu Linux on my iMac, but I use VWware Fusion. It is seamless and easy. You can use the disk image (.iso) file directly without burning a disc. No separate partition required (and no need to pre-allocate space for its storage), and you can get rid of it with a few clicks of your mouse.

  • Hello, I have a Mac Book Pro mid 2012, and forgot password, how do I reset it without losing info?

Hello, I have a Mac Book Pro mid 2012, and forgot password, how do I reset it without losing info? I certainly dont want it to be reseted by apple with my info from work, thank you very much for further response.

First, make sure caps lock is not on.
You must back up all data before continuing, unless you've already done so. If you need to back up but can't log in, ask for instructions.
If the user account is associated with an Apple ID, and you know the Apple ID password, then maybe the Apple ID can be used to reset your user account password.
Otherwise*, boot into Recovery by holding down the key combination command-R at startup. Release the keys when you see a gray screen with a spinning dial.
When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
    Utilities ▹ Terminal
    from the menu bar.
In the Terminal window, type this:
    res
Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:
    resetpassword
Press return. A Reset Password window opens.
Select your boot volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Follow the prompts to reset the password. It's safest to choose a password that includes only the characters a-z, A-Z, and 0-9.
    Select
     ▹ Restart
    from the menu bar.
You should now be able to log in with the new password, but your Keychain will be reset (empty.) If you've forgotten the Keychain password (which is ordinarily the same as your login password), there's no way to recover it.
*Note: If you've activated FileVault, this procedure doesn't apply. Follow instead the instructions on this page:
If you forget the password and FileVault is on

  • Can I combine two partitions without losing data on one?

So if I have two partitions on one hard drive can I combine them without losing the data that is on one of them?  If not, could I just do a time machine backup, combine the two partitions, and then restore the time machine backup?  Would that work?

If the other partition was created with BootCamp it can be deleted in Bootcamp and merged back into OS X.
It might be possible to rename the partition "BOOTCAMP" in Disk Utility and formatted MSDOS to trick Boot Camp into thinking it is a Bootcamp parititon and merging it back into OS X. (haven't tried this so I don't know if it works or not yet) I would first make a clone below before attempting this method.
TimeMachine restores are fraught with problems on these forums.
What I would do in your case is use another equal or larger sized (than your primary boot drive), blank, Disk Utility HFS+Journaled formatted, external powered drive to Carbon Copy Clone your OS X boot partition to it, then Disk Utility > Repair Permissions on both (you can ignore the list that shows).
What this does is gives you a "hold the option key" bootable clone, which while booted from it, check it out first and then use Disk Utility to completey (select the hard drive name) format the entire primary boot drive (HFS+ Journaled of course).
Then simply CCC back onto the primary boot drive. Then run ALL of OnyX's maintainence and cleaning aspects and reboot. Speedy machine here we come.   (note: Cloning optimizes the drive by the order of the alphabetical order files in the Root Level, leaving "Users" last where the most change and slowdown in drive performance occurs, OnyX cleans out the caches and rebuilds Spotlight, more performance)
    http://www.titanium.free.fr/
The new version of CCC has gotten a bit more complicated, including a archiving of files changed from between updated clones, however the default settings are fine for your first time clone to a blank drive. So all you really have to do is select the "From" and "To" drives and click Clone.
Clones are wonderful, it's a exact copy of whats on your primary boot drive, so far in the many years I've used clones everything has worked on the same machine, everything.
TimeMachine drives are not bootable, leaving you stuck if your hard drive dies or you can't boot from the OS X install disks.
You can first make a clone so you have that method, then c boot off the 10.6 installer disk and use TimeMachine that way to restore to the newly formatted drive (use Disk Utility under the Utilities menu, second screen in) I haven't tried this myself, prefering clones instead as it's less headaches.
Remmeber to ALWAYS have two backups of your data at all times, (erasing your drive leaves you with only one copy) in this case you would have a clone and a TM backup, in case one method fails (less likely the clone), then you got the other method.

  • Need help changing Apple ID without losing info

I have 3 Iphones linked to the same Apple ID.  2 are mine and 1 is my fathers who is not too saavy with Iphones which is why it's been linked to mine to help him.  He has since upgraded from the 3 to a 4s (like I said, he's behind the times) and was wanting to move his content from one phone to the other.  First off, the Apple 'Genius's' were anything but 'Genius' when it came to helping him.  So he ended up having to ship his phone 3k miles to me to help.  I was able to back up his phone and attempted to create a new Apple ID for his phone.  Then I realized it had changed my phones ID's to the same as the one I made for him.  I have since switched both of my personal phones back to the original ID's, but his phone still has the old/new ID I created for his phone but comes up as not 'verified' since I changed my 2 back to the original ID.  If you're still reading this and I haven't lost you yet then maybe you can help.  My question in a nutshell is how do I give him his own ID without losing the content he has on this phone?  He can't sync from ICloud because it will import all of my info onto his phone as well.  I would really like to get this resolved so I can send him back his phone asap and not worry about further issues if and when he needs to backup or sync his phone to his own account without my info transferring as well.

All your content is saved to you computer it's self so u shouldn't lose anything.  However, when in doubt back it up.  Do a back up of your content just to give yourself leave of mind that way you have it if it does get lost.  I changed my account without losing anything.  U should be fine

  • Is it possible to resize the partitions without losing data?

    I have following issue:
I have dual-boot Arch with Windows XP. I created 4 partitions: 40GB XP's system disk (ntfs), 80GB ntfs data disk, 1GB swap and 25GB Linux partition.
But I am running XP so rarely, that it is frustrating, that I have most of my data on ntfs partition... I'd like to wipe out that 80GB ntfs, resize the system ntfs partition up to for example 60GB, and add the remaining 60GB to my linux ext3 partition (because I'm running out of free space recently...).
Has anyone done something like this, and how safe it is (if possible at all)
Yes, I have read this: http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Res … _partition, and a few more.
I just don't have time to reinstall both systems (especially I would not like to install Windows, because I'd rather install Vista from my recovery disk, than hack the XP to work again...), and if some issues are likely to appear, then I'll give it up for now .

It's trivial using gparted, but as with any similar operation, you run the risk of losing data - so you'd better backup.

  • How to change computer iPhone syncs to without losing info

I bought a new iMac and am trying to set it up so I can use it to sync my iPhone (original not 3g) instead of the old PC we were using and are trying to phase out.
When I plug the phone into the iMac and try to sync, or even manually manage music, I get the message that "the iPhone is synced with another iTunes library, do you want to erase this iPhone and sync with this iTunes library?"
I don't care about losing the music/pictures that are on the iPhone, as I can easily re-add them to the iPhone. However, I DO NOT want to lose the contacts, text messages, notes, and other data that is on the phone.
I have found hacks online to be able to sync an iPhone with multiple computers continuously, however I am simply looking to CHANGE the computer my phone syncs to, not use multiple computers all the time.
When I moved our music to the iMac, I created a new music library because it was much easier than doing the "consolidate library" process that I have had a ton of problems with in the past. Is this now creating the problem with the phone?
We're slowly trying to move all of our products to Apple...but Apple is not making this process very easy!

Thanks very much! That message "iphone is synced with another itunes library...erase this iphone" is an awful message. It should just read "music" and not "erase this iphone". I didn't care about erasing all my music on my iphone, as I have it all on my computer stored safely. I did not want to lose my contacts, applications, txt msgs, call history, etc. I thought Apple was supposed to be user friendly.... changing computers that my itunes library uses was very stressful because I couldn't find out how to properly do it without "erasing my iphone". There needs to be an article on this at apple.com! If there is one, please point me to it so I can bookmark it for the next time I switch computers

  • How to export pics from iPhoto without losing info such as ratings, names etc

    Hi,
I'm trying to export lots of pictures from my iPhoto library to my mother's. I've got the two computers lined up next to eachother, filesharing on, using the "export" option in my iphoto to export the pics to a shared folder, then importing them into my mother's iPhoto.
But whatever I seem to do, all the relevant additional information attached to the photos gets lost on the way:
    - they arrive with today's date instead of their real dates
    - all the "names" information is lost
    - the ratings I'd given them are lost
Is there any way to preserve this information? It seems ridiculous if I have to again trawl through 100s of pics on my mother's computer to reinsert that data for each picture.
A second, less important question: when I export the pics from iPhoto (setting on jpeg) I have to choose size and jpeg quality - I'm sure these options are great if I wanted to reduce the size or quality, but I just want to export them exactly as they are in my iPhoto. If I choose high quality the exported file ends up smaller than the file in my iphoto, if I choose maximum quality it ends up twice as big. Any idea which settings just leave the size and quality as is?
    Many thanks for your help.

The easiest way to move files/albums/events plus all versions and metadata between Libraries is with
    iPhoto Library Manager
    You're running into a Catch-22.
The setting for leaving the file at the size and quality it is is to export the Original file. In the Export dialogue it's in the Kind dropdown.
When you export using the File ->Export dialogue you can write some of the info to the file on the way out: Titles and Descriptions (which also gets Keywords). You can't write ratings information because this is not standard metadata. A workaround: use a keyword: '5', '4' etc.
The catch is that this info is not in the Original file. So, if you export as anythign other than Original you have to choose a size and quality. If you export the Original you don't get the metadata - because that's not in the original.
Hence my suggestion of Library Manager.
    Regards
    TD

  • Restoring the i phone without losing info HELP

Ok so I come back from my trip and I have some great pics on my phone and i plug my phone in and and on my i tunes a screen pops up and say would u like to install new software for your iphone and I say what the **** I dont want to be bothered by this screen every time i plug in my phone so i download. once it installs a screen pops up and ands says there was an error and my phone is in recovery mode and it needs to be restored. well i have all my pictures from my tripand all my contacts and notes so i dont want to lose that. i havent restored it yet. what should i do to save my stuff.

    Hey mitchedelson,
If you synced the iPhone with the computer before attempting to update, you can recover the photos taken with the iPhone. You would just go through the restore process and backup from the profile saved in iTunes.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=305744
The restore and backup may be the only option but you can attempt to reset the iPhone as described here:

  • Replaced hard drive How can I sync without losing info

How can I sync my Iphone to a new hard drive (old crashed) and not lose the info on my phone. I have over forty of my own videos I do not want to go back and look up on a series of 20+ external hard drives. Will it erase my videos. I can get get my Itunes back through the Itunes store I understand.
    Thanks
    Paul

You should have a backed up of your iTunes library.
Apple may or may not allow you to redownload your purchases-it is not guaranteed.
If you do not have a backup of your iTunes library-you are most likely out of luck. You can try connecting and see if it would allow transfer purchases.

do you have any plug-ins or extensions active in your current Safari environment? Perhaps it’s some subset of the plug-ins and extensions that is to blame.

I have an external firewire drive on which I originally created 2 partitions that now have data. The drive is attached to my Macbook. Is there a way to create a third partition, requiring resizing of the other partitions, without losing the current data ?? I don't think the current version of Drive Genius is intel Mac compatible. Disk Utility will erase the entire drive when creating a third partition.
    I would appreciate any thoughts.

you're right, the current version of Drive Genius does not work with the Intel macs.
