Partitioned hard drive needs to be unpartitioned!

Hi, the fool before me set up a mac with a 6 gb partition for the system and a 30 gb system for the user. there isn't any data on the user partition. i want to delete it and make the system partition the whole drive. is there any way to do that without completely reformatting it? I tried disk utility but didn't know enough and it didn't change it. Someone please give me a run down of how to do this without reformatting if possible. Thanks!

You are in luck. Your particular model does not require the special partition for OS X. Unfortunately, in order to return the drive to a single partition you will have to re-partition the drive which will erase all data. You should plan to make a bootable backup of the current system unless you plan to reinstall everything from scratch. You can use Carbon Copy Cloner (www.versiontracker.com) to make the bootable clone. You will need an external Firewire drive for the clone.
To re-partition the drive:
1. Insert an OS X Installer disc into the optical drive.
2. Restart the computer and when you hear the chime press and hold down the "C" key until the computer starts up from the CD/DVD (gray screen, Apple logo, spinning gear appear.)
3. Select the language and click on the Continue button.
4. Select Disk Utility from the installer's Installer menu.
5. After DU loads select the hard drive entry from the leftside list (the one with the mfgr.'s ID and drive size.)
6. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
7. Select one (1) partition from the dropdown menu.
8. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended from the format dropdown menu.
9. Check the option to install Mac OS 9 drivers.
10. Enter a volume name in the Volume Name field.
11. Click on the Partition button. Wait until the new volume mounts on the Desktop.
12. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
13. Drag the list entry for the Firewire volume to the Source field.
14. Drag the list entry for the new volume to the Destination field.
15. Click on the Restore button. Go have coffee.
The restore process will take a while. The larger the volume of data being copied the longer it will take.

You are running Windows, so yes. I like Microsoft's built in protection and how 8.1 is 'hardened' but I also install Malwarebytes. I will not use Kaspersky anymore. But you do need something. I can't find that model. If you open System Profiler in the Utilities folder look for the Model Identifier over in the right hand display. What do you find for the model ID? If your computer supports Internet Recovery here's what to do:
Install Mavericks, Lion/Mountain Lion Using Internet Recovery
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
Boot to the Internet Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND-OPTION- R keys until a globe appears on the screen. Wait patiently - 15-20 minutes - until the Recovery main menu appears.
Partition and Format the hard drive:
Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
After DU loads select your newly installed hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion. Mavericks: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks and click on the Install button. Be sure to select the correct drive to use if you have more than one.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
This should restore the version of OS X originally pre-installed on the computer. If Mavericks is not installed, then you can reinstall it by re-downloading the Mavericks installer.
You will need to use Boot Camp Assistant in order to create a new Windows partition, then reinstall Windows.

I want to know if I can backup my Ipad to an external harddrive. I have a pc with xp pro media edition and a partitioned hard drive with very little space on C and lots on D. I am trying to update my Ipad to 5.1.1 and it says it needs 12 gb to backup.

I am trying to update my Original Ipad from 4.3.4 to 5.1.1 and because C drive is full ( I have moved everything that can be moved to D drive) mostly from Microsoft updates over the years, I am unable to do the backup Itunes is telling me I have to do to update or lose all media on this iPad. 12.67 gb is required to do the backup and I have a whopping 965.2 MB. I can not get the cloud to use as backup as it requires 5.0 or better. Does anyone know if I can back up to D drive, and if so how? Also, I have a 1 terrabyte WD mini external hard drive I just got as a gift...could I do the backup to it and, again, if so, how? Please explain from start to finish, as my brain is now fried from, first from finally getting Itunes updated to 10.6 ,and now trying to do this update. Thanks to anyone for their help!!

How to properly clean install: erase, partition hard drive, and install tiger then SL

     I am a noob at this, so if responders would be kind enough to be detailed / specific with any instructions it would be most helpful! I own a dinosaur apparently (even though I don't think so): the white (not unibody) Intel macbook2,1 (late 2006) 1.83 GHz with currently 1GB of RAM, but I have 2x2GB RAM sitting next to me ready for install. However, first I would like to do a clean uninstall of my computer (running OS X 10.6.8 SL). I also would like to properly partition my hard drive while I'm at it.
     About 6 months ago I had serious crashing issues, along with kernel panics, hangs, applications randomly appearing & disappearing, system settings and options doing the same, fans running high (probably due to the low RAM available), and basically overall screwiness. So, after trying pretty much every option I could find on this community...and many others... (e.g. clean cache, clean old logs, already did a clean uninstall and install of SL, and much much more) I have reached my wits end. I would say that to date I've wasted a good solid 2 months with this.
     The clean install worked for MAYBE a month or so, but then it started acting up again with the fans (even without high pages in/out, CPU or memory usage) and excessive heat, along with the apps freezing and quitting (mind you it would be only two things open such as 1 word document and then firefox-- with flash disabeled). SOOOOOO long story short, I have purchased new RAM and I would like to try this once again, but to ensure I don't screw it up this time I would like some directions as to how to do the uninstall, partition, then reinstall. (currently to date I ensured all updates are completed---even though they are no longer released for SL, and I just did a full backup).
     Also, I need to first install Tiger (my original OS) as when I went to do a hardware test the other day this was not an option (and upon further research it is due to me not using Tiger as a first install and then using my mac box set for SL). I didn't use my original OS first because....one issue encountered when I had tried to install Tiger was that my Disc 2 (the applications one) took around 1.5 hrs to complete, but when I reached the last step of glory where I expected it to say COMPLETE it instead said that there was some sort of issue with the disc..........of course).
     Any help would be greatly appreciated.

1: If near a Apple Store or Authorized Repair, take it to then for a free evaluation, it might have other hardware problems now that it would be a waste of effort even continuing.
2: The RAM needs to be

Basically what this means is you can put in a 2GB module and a 1GB module for 3GB total.
I wouldn't proceed with installing RAM just yet, not until you get a stable OS X version on the machine, you might have a hard drive needing to be replaced as well which you can do while inserting new RAM.

How to erase and install Snow Leopard 10.6
Software Update fully immediately after setup.
There is no need to install Tiger, he 10.6 disk contains the full 10.6 version, you can either install the iLife from Tiger disks or use Pacifist from Charlesoft to extract them and place on your new install, then Software update to get them current.
4: If not successful then the drive also likely needs to be replaced, if so choose a 7,200 RPM SATA I w/1.5Gb/s connection.

If your getting beeping noises or "you need to restart" issues, it's likely one or more of the RAM modules is bad. Have it exchanged or swapped.
I advise good quality RAM the first time, if you buy cheap stuff it's just going back.
Don't go any further than 10.6.8 with that old machine, the performance will be terrible.

Re-partitioning hard drive, XP to Win7 upgrade

Realizing that my existing XP Boot camp (3.0.1) partition was not going to be large enough for Win7, I deleted my existing partition along with my XP installation.
Two issues
1- I now cannot partition my newly un-partitioned hard drive in Boot Camp. I got some message about the memory already being used, and the need for a journaled format.
According to Disk Utility, my HD format is Mac os extended (journaled). My RAID type is Mirrored RAID type.
Any ideas how to get my disk to partition? I did zero out all the free space on the drive before trying to partition.
2- To get to Win7, do I now have to reinstall XP, upgrade Boot Camp to 3.1, install Win7?
Another problem I seem to have is that i bought an Upgrade version of Win7. Is that going to work for me?

1- I removed my previous boot camp partition. My Mac HD is mac osx extended (journaled). raid type is mirrored raid set, but raid size is 0 kb. What should my settings be, and where do i change them?
So you have a RAID set with Disk Utility but are not using it ?
What exactly is the 'layout' of your harddisks ?
If you don't use that once set RAID, it might be best to clean house right now and get rid of it.
Disk Utility can do this, but you have to backup your OSX first, since undoing a RAID deletes the content of the HDs/partitions in it.

Sorry, seems that that page is gone for bad.
Like said, the BootCamp Assistant needs to find a free contigeous amount of diskspace of the size you specify in the BCA when partitioning.
That error you get implies that the BCA can not find it.
Have a look at my other posts in the thread I linked to, on how-to use an external harddisk and something like SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner to clone your OSX back and forth to get the needed free diskspace for the BCA.

I am about to update to OS Lion. Will this affect a previously partitioned Hard Drive atall?

I have a partitioned hard drive and am about to install an operating system upgrade of LIon. With an already partitioned harddrive are there any issues that I need to be aware of such as loss of data on the windows portion etc?

No, an OS X installation does not alter the partition map.
Back it up anyway, as a precaution against the unexpected.

Are you sure it's journalled?
Preferably Mac OS Extended (Journaled), or, if necessary, Mac OS Extended (Case-sensitive, journaled).
If the "Journaled" is missing, just select the partition (indented, under the main line for the drive), and click the Enable Journaling icon in the toolbar (or select File > Enable Journaling in the menubar).

I have three internal HD's The first I am running the system on 10.6.8 (which is up to date) , the second I do most of my work on and the third I have partitioned into two and I am trying to install Lion on one of the patitions.
But Lion has decided it will only go on the first HD.
Above is the one I want to put it on, but it's not available and I can't change the partition scheme. None of the things the directions state are usable??
What might I be doing wrong?

Thanks again for a rapid responce.
I finally got lion on one partition and my daily "SilverKeeper" backup on the other.
Since the only thing I had on the two partition Hard drive was the back up and since the backup would get put on tonight any way I changed the drive to no partitions. This gave me the ability to choose the GUID option, which I did and then I installed two partitions and successfuly istalled Lion on one of them. I even tied Lion into the iCloud successfuly.
But I am not out of the woods yet! I brought My brand new iPad to lunch and was informed that my iPad was synced to my Lion at home and I was on the cloud. That blew my mind, I was impressed.
I then read the Daily news with out problem, however, when I shut down my iPad, that was all she wrote. I can not get the iPad back on. The best I could do was see the revolving gear start and then freeze. It's on charge now and I can not even get rid of the frozen gear.
Not sure this all has anything to do with the recent installation on my main computer, but it's mighty suspicious.

I am creating a APM-partitioned hard drive for use with a PowerPC iMac G5, so I can have a fresh OS install on one as a reference, and the other be my usable OS. Now, I also want to back both of these partitions up on a storage hard drive that I also want to contain partitions that are bootable on an Intel mac (GUID). My question is, can I clone my APM partitions as backup to designated partitions on my GUID backup/storage hard drive (which I plan on being able to boot other partions on an Intel Mac), and have the option of later cloning the same APM partitions back to an APM-paritioned hard drive and have them still be bootable on a Power PC? I know I won't be able to boot a Power PC from off of the GUID-paritioned drive, but I want to be able to restore my APM-partitioned drive incase things go sour with it.

Block-level copier that copies not just the files but the filesystem structure as well. But files can be moved from GUID to APM partitioned devices without any effect on the file. The partition scheme affects whether an installed system will boot a particular type of hardware.
If you installed OS X on a GUID partitioned drive you would not be able to boot a PPC Mac.

Format the HDD in Disk Utility>Erase to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and the open System Preferences>Time Machine and set up the external disk as the Time Machine HDD. Then look at the Options, and exclude what you do not want backed up.
