Partitioning drives for linux and windows 7

I want to know if there is a piece of software that is free that can partition my drives so that I can triple boot OSX lion, windows 7 (which is currently blocking...) Linux (ubuntu puredyne).
A little bit of guidance would be much apprieciated as I have already tried fixing the partition tables MBR in the terminal and ended up disabling windows.
I know how to reinstall windows but what software can partintion the drives for linux as a triple boot?
Thanks.

Well, this is possible using Disk Utility as well as the Linux formatter. However, to triple boot will require special software: The rEFInd Boot Manager - Roderick Smith.

missing *.inf driver for 2605dtn and windows 7 64 bit
I just piurchased a new HP laptop with windows 7 64 bit installed.  I do not have any windows 7 disks.
Where do I obtain the necessary drivers for this printer?

    HI RandyJohnson,
You do not need to download drivers for this product. Print drivers for your product are available within the Windows 7 operating system. Use Devices and Printers, formerly known as the Add Printer Wizard, to obtain the Windows 7 update. For more information,  go to Install the Printer Driver through the Windows 7 Operating System (c02536257) (in English).

  • External Drive for OSX and Windows

    Dear all,
I read somwhere that it is possible to use an external HD which can be used as an intermediate for documents between a PowerMac and Windows 2000 computer.
The article suggested that when using the Disk Utility program of Apple, the Ext. HD should be erased using the MS-Dos modus. This I did. After that it mentioned that by clicking on the Partion tab, under the "Option" button MS-DOS file structure should be selected.
However my DU program says: "No Options Available".
I'm still using OS 10.3.9 and I will upgrade when OS 10.5 becomes available.
Question: Why is the "Options" button not available? If this is because of using 10.3.9 how can I bypass the option and make the Windows computer see the External HD as well?
    Thanks for your input,
    Hans.

For now, while you need 10.4.6 to select GUID partition table, you can still setup a drive with FAT32 partitions. Format it on Windows perhaps.
Disk Utility -> Partitions -> Options....
    GPL/GUID for Intel Macs
    APL for PowerPC
    Master Record Block for Windows
With Intel Macs you can install and run Windows XP SP2, Vista, XP Pro.
Hans, right now is probably the best time to update the OS. Tiger 10.4.9 is as complete as possible probably and esp. for PPC Macs. I think it runs better than 10.3.9 did.
While 10.5 will offer something different and new, the best time to upgrade is not when it is released sometimes, but rather once it reaches 10.5.3+ (ie, a year from now or later). Play and test it but depend on it 100%? Usually there are needed changes to software and hardware to "catch up."
Right now Tiger DVD 10.4.6 are available. Apple felt it worth putting out newer DVDs.

  • Partitioning Drive for Mac and PC to deliver 10GB video file

I need to deliver several video files to a client on a drive.
Because some of the clips are over 10GB I cannot use the drive in its current FAT state.
I want / need the drive to be read by both Mac AND PC.
If this is the case, and I cannot use FAT, should I partition the drive into TWO partitions?
If so, should I then make one partition for Mac and the other for PC... then upload the video files twice, once to each partition?
Is there an alternative? How do I make the drive partitioned for both allowing the video to be ready by both Mac and PC.
Can I do what needs to be done using Disk Utility?
What 2 formats should I use? Is MS-DOS (FAT) the windows based partition, and is that the only one? And won't that not work for my issue of needing to load a file over 4 gigs?
What partition scheme do I want? It appears I can only use one partition scheme... or is this incorrect?
    I'm using Mac OS X 10.5.5
Computer is Mac G5. Drive is the WD 250GB passport.
    Thanks

If you format the drive as Microsft NTFS, there will be no problem with split files.

  • External hard drive for Mac and Windows?

    Hey all,
Is it possible to set up an external hard drive with a partition that has one side compatible with Mac and the other with Windows, similar to a Boot Camp setup on an internal drive? If so, how do I do that? Thanks for any advice you can give.

    Rekishika:
Yes it is possible. Use Disk Utility from Leopard and partition the external drive to the desired space for each. Format one side with Mac HFS+ Journaled and the other with FAT32 (You can reformat the FAT32). You can also format both external partitions to FAT32 if you want Leopard and Windows to access (read and write)either one of them.

  • New external drive for mac and windows

    Hello,
I am looking to buy a 500gb maxtor external drive. Partition it 250gb for winxp and 250gb for my imac. I am really looking to make these drives as backup drives. I currently have an old 250gb (not all used) formatted as os x entended. I use it for all my itunes, photos, movies... photoshop, you get the picture... I just want to drag and drop to that drive. The same for my windows.
Does this sound correct? Has anyone done it this way?
Another way, would be to have it formatted for windows and drop and drag into two different folders : win and imac. But then I will be losing the naming conventions from the os x? isn't that why and want to use os x extended?
    Thanks for all ideas,
    Charlie

    Piece of cake!
For those who want to know:
usb connection to imac first. I started disk utility. Split the partition to two parts and formated only one partition as OS X extended. After done, copied my directories as a bkup.
usb connection to windows. I started computer management and saw that the usb disk had two partitions: the first was healthy but unknown. That was ok, I wanted the second partition to be NTFS and formated. Then copied my directories to that drive as well.
Connected back the imac and saw both partitions, imacbkup and winbkup. I forgot, just like what I do with the imac and winxp, I can see the c: drive via the mac.
Very cool and easy. Maxtor drives are very reliable and easy to use.
    Thanks,
    Charlie Cooperman

  • Tricky stuff: formating hard drive for Mac and Windows

Don't know how to format an external USB hard drive for these purposes:
#1. Store a bootable backup for my MacBook (Intel)
#2. Must be readable and writeable by both Mac OS 10.4 and WinXP (mainly for file storage)
Can I do 2 partitions, with Mac OS Extended (journal) + GUID to serve purpose #1, and MS-DOS + Master Boot Record to serve purpose #2? My research suggests no, it seems both volumes must use either GUID or MBR? Thanks

    Hi,
I have two Western Digital external HDs with nearly exactly these specs.
Partitioned them with GUID partition scheme and have Partition 1 as bootable OSX clone and partition 2 with FAT32 for file storage/sharing between OSX and Windows.
So, what you want is what I have/use right now.

  • Is labview same for linux and windows?

    hi,
Right now, i am using labview 6.1 and 7.1 windows version. can i use the same windows version for linux  also?

You need to get the Linux version in order to run LV on Linux. You can open and run the VIs you save in Windows in the Linux version and vice-versa, but some things are Windows-specific and will not work (for instance ActiveX, .net, toolkits which are only supported on Windows, etc.). Also, when you open your VI in Linux, LV will tell you it was changed, because the compiled code is saved as part of the VI. The compiled code for Windows and Linux is different, so when you open a Windows VI in Linux, it is recompiled.
You might wish to do a search for "Linux" to see more specific details.
Try to take over the world!

  • Formatting external hard drive for MAC and Windows

I have an external hard drive that I would like to make compatible with BOTH Mac and Windows. I don't want to split it but is there any way that I can make it compatible to where I can use it back and forth between both? I have classes and use Photoshop on both systems and need to be able to read and write to the hard drive from each system. Please let me know if this is possible and how? Thanks

I have a 500GB external HDD which I had to format o Fat32 a while ago. I don't remember exactly how I did it, but I remember it was a pain in the *** and took forever (I was under Windows XP).
So short answer to your question is yes. It is possible and as the above person said, you need to format to Fat32. Long answer is it will take some time and effort. Here are a few links to help you get started:
    http://www.ridgecrop.demon.co.uk/index.htm?fat32format.htm
    http://macosx.com/forums/mac-os-x-system-mac-software/270038-format-new-hard-dis k-into-fat32.html
    http://en.kioskea.net/faq/sujet-676-formatting-your-drive-with-fat32
I haven't tried any of these (I believe I formatted mine downloading a third party app), but you might be lucky. Good luck.

  • Unable to partition drive for Boot Camp / Windows XP installation

I need to install Windows XP on my MacBook so that I can run MS Access 2007 for an online college course I'm taking.
When I attempt to partition (it doesn't seem to matter what size I choose to make the Windows partition), I get a message that the "The disk cannot be partitioned because some files cannot be moved," and that I should "back up the hard drive and format it as a single Mac OS Extended (Journaled) volume" and "restore information to the disk and try using Boot Camp Assistant again."
When I open Disk Utility and examine the information for the hard drive, it lists the File System as "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)." The "Supports Journaling" and "Journaled" fields are also listed as "Yes."
I'm not sure how to proceed. I have used Time Machine to back up the hard disk, but I see no option in Disk Utility to format the drive, and it doesn't appear that it needs to be formatted.
Has anyone else encountered this issue or have any ideas what might be causing it?

The part you need to follow: backup and reinitialize
You need unfragmented contiguous free space and it isn't, and some file(s) may be locked and can't be moved.
Booting from another hard drive and buy/use iDefrag is a 'maybe.'
Clone the drive and restore the clone with RESTORE in Disk Utility (from your OS X DVD) or TimeMachine or SuperDuper (or Carbon Copy Cloner).
Maybe you are better off just using XP in a VM like free VirtualBox instead of running XP native on its own partition.

  • Formatting an external hard drive for Mac and Windows

    Hello,
I just bought a brand new Seagate Expansion Desktop Drive (2TB) and am trying to work out how to format it. I want to move all my photos and movies to it from my laptop so i have more space. I have a Mac OS X 10.5.8 laptop but i also wanted to make sure it was compatible with other Windows computers in case i need to use it on someone else's PC.
I've read through a few posts over the net and i am getting confused as i'm not IT-intelligent at all. I've seen there are possibly 4 different format types.
Any help would be much appreciated.
    Thank you!
