Partitioning Error- TIme Machine

Hi- I am trying to install XP on my Mac Pro under boot camp, but I get the "Backup and erase the drive into OSX extended journaled" message. I have 2 questions about this.
1) Should I follow it's advice?
2) I have a time mechine Drive set up. Can I restore my disk from that if I do reformat the drive?

1) Yes, BootCamp will only work starting with one Mac OS extended & journaled partition.
2) It should work, but do a couple of forum searches on TimeMachine before you stake your data on it.
BTW, what does Disk Utility show for your HD partitions now?

  • I am setting up a time machine backup to a external Hard drive.  I want to backup by Mac book Pro running OSX 10.8.5. I would like to Partition the disk and use one partition for Time machine backups and the other for my Lightroom backups. How to do this?

I want to create a two partition disk. One partition for time machine, the other for Lightroom backup. Currently Time Machine is using the entire drive and it is doing the intial encryption and is about 29% complete after two days.  I've decided that I want to turn encryption off and partition the disk. So I do I start over?

With the external drive attached, open Finder>Applications>Utilities>Disk Utility.  Select the external drive from the list in the left side panel of the DU window.  In the main window panel, click Partition in the buttons top center of that panel.
Select the number of partitions you want and adjust their sizes.
For the first partition, click to highlight the partition, then select the format, Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and then the partition table as GUID [both of those are the defaults].  Click Apply and it will ask to confirm and erase and format that partion...oh, give the partition a name, like Backup.
Then repeat those steps for the second partition..and remember to name it...something like Lightroom.
Close Disk Utilitty and you are ready to send TM to the one partition, and do your backup of Lightroom to the second partition.

How do I partition my Time Machine back up drive (G-Drive) to back up both my IMac and my MacBook Air?

That's not needed, but if you want to do it, use the Disk Utility in the /Applications/Utilities/ folder to create a new partition.

  • How much should I partition for Time Machine/Backup?

    Hi all,
I upgraded my PB G4 HD to a 160GB recently and have just purchased a 1TB External HD. How much should I partition in the external to be used for Time Machine backup purposes of my internal HD? Will the same size suffice, or should I allocate more?
Also, I was thinking of formatting the drive so that it's both Windows and OS X friendly, but that means formatting it to MS-DOS something (I was just reading about it in another thread), will that cause any issues for the partition for Time Machine that I created? Thanks.

That's not practical. If you want to use the hard drive on a Windows machin while still being useful for Time Machine you should use MacDrive.

I would make the partition at least twice the size of the internal drive. Preferably, you would want 50 GB for a Leopard install that includes just the base operating system so you can boot off the 50 GB to recover your Time Machine data if your Leopard installer disc ever becomes unusable.
Also since you have a Powerbook, your 1 TB hard drive should be Firewire. USB will not boot Powerbooks. If it is USB only, you can remove the external hard drive case and replace it with one compatible with the drive inside that case from http://www.macsales.com/ that has Firewire.

I have rebooted in Mountain Lion (all updated)on my MacBook Pro and keep getting this error:
"Time Machine couldn't complete the backup to (drive). The backup image (myvolume).sparesebundle is already in use.)
I have a 2TB time machine with about 240GB left. Any ideas?

  • Disk Repair Error (Time Machine Partition)

For the second time, my Time Machine backup partition reports errors when I try to mount it (exists on my external hard drive via USB).
As soon as I plug in the USB external, I get this error:
    *Disk Repair*
The disk "Backup" was not repairable by this computer. It is being made available to you with limited functionality. You must back up your data and reformat the disk as soon as possible.
I tried looking at it through Disk Utility, and I found "Repair Disk" grayed out, and when I click on "Verify Disk", the output is:
    Verifying volume “Backup”
    Checking Journaled HFS Plus volume.
    Checking Extents Overflow file.
    Checking Catalog file.
    Checking multi-linked files.
Incorrect number of file hard links
    Checking Catalog hierarchy.
    Checking Extended Attributes file.
    Incorrect number of Extended Attributes
(It should be 29855 instead of 29853)

    Checking multi-linked directories.
Incorrect number of directory hard links
    Checking volume bitmap.
    Checking volume information.
The volume Backup needs to be repaired.
Error: Filesystem verify or repair failed.
Its worked fine for about 1.5 months since it did this last. My other partition on the external hard drive has always been fine.
Any ideas on the causes of this, or how to fix this aside from reformatting every 1.5 months?
Thanks in advance for your help!

I've had a very similar problem. When I tried to put Leopard on the first time, it wiped out my hard drive directory... Disk Warrior to the rescue. I then bought a brand new internal SATA drive and an external firewire drive for the back up. I formatted both drives and did a fresh install of Leopard on the internal. So far so good-ish. All other weird Leopard bugs and issues aside for now, I am now getting the error message that my Time Machine backup drive (which has been working fine) is irreparable and needs to be formated as soon as possible.
I have the back up drive partitioned and the non-Time-Machine-backup partition, that is the normal simply-storage partition is working fine. The Verify Disk Permissions, Repair Disk Permissions, and Repair Disk are greyed out in Disk Utility. Here's what I get when I Verify Disk.
    Verifying volume “G5 Backup”
    Checking Journaled HFS Plus volume.
    Checking Extents Overflow file.
    Checking Catalog file.
    Invalid catalog record type
    Volume check failed.
Error: Filesystem verify or repair failed.
    Verifying volume “Scratch”
    Checking Journaled HFS Plus volume.
    Checking Extents Overflow file.
    Checking Catalog file.
    Checking multi-linked files.
    Checking Catalog hierarchy.
    Checking Extended Attributes file.
    Checking volume bitmap.
    Checking volume information.
The volume Scratch appears to be OK.
Is a re-format of the back up drive my only option? How did this happen? and How can I prevent this from happening again?
    Thanks!

  • External hard drive partition for Time Machine wont mount

I have an external HD that I've partitioned half for Time Machine, and half for external storage. Today the Time Machine partition wouldn't show up on the desktop. I checked Disk Utility and it recognizes both partitions, but the Time Machine partition is greyed out. When I selected it, in the stat list at the bottom it said "Mount Point: Not Mounted." I then clicked on "Mount" at the top, and after a bit a popup told me it couldn't mount and I should attempt to repar the disk. So I clicked "Repair Disk," and after a while, I finally got the message "Error: Disk Utility can’t repair this disk. Back up as many of your files as possible, reformat the disk, and restore your backed-up files."
Why is only one partition affected? Can I reformat one petition but leave the other untouched? Are there any other options before I do this?
One other item that is probably related: I've been having an issue with a flash drive that seems to constantly unmount itself, giving me "error, disk ejected improperly" messages. Earlier today I believe I had the same thing with my external HD.

Why is only one partition affected?
The drive malfunction that caused the problem only affected that partition.
Can I reformat one petition but leave the other untouched?
    Yes.
Are there any other options before I do this?
This is not an option, it's mandatory: start a new backup on another drive. The one you have has lost data once already. If it were mine, it would be in the recycling bin now. You need more than one backup to be safe anyway. Apparently you have no backups at all of the data on the other partition. That means you're going to lose that data, sooner or later.

  • Canʻt partition after time machine restore

I have been trying to get boot camp to work on my late ʻ07 macbook pro since I need to run windows for my computer science classes. I have had boot camp on my system prior to lion but it seems that I canʻt partition using the assistant anymore. I am currently using about 150gb out of 750gb and I keep getting an error saying items couldnʻt be moved during the partitioning. I have backed up to time machine, partitioned drive, and restored twice with no luck. I even zeroʻd out the drive on the latest attempt.
Is anyone else expiriencing this as I canʻt seem to find anything. If someone could give me tips or tricks to try that would be much appreciated.
    Thanks

I've always use iPartition to build/resize/delete partitions. It can do this non-destructively. That fact has saved me hours and hours of tedious work compared to the old "back up partition, resize partition, restore partition". They also make an program called iDefrag, which can be used to consolidate the data in a partition, allowing you to create larger sibling partitions. I've been using their products since 2007 (when I switched over to primarily Mac work).
The company is Coriolis Systems - http://www.coriolis-systems.com/ . They have demos of their software. I know you resolved your problem, but it's good to be prepared for the future.

  • How can I back up to an external drive with three partitions using Time Machine?

I have an external drive connected to my MBPro. The external drive has three partitions: one dedicated to the MBPro, one dedicated to my iMac and one for Photos.   How can I be sure that when I backup my MBPro, it does so to the dedciated partition?
Also, I eject each of the partition icons on my desktop through the Eject selection in Finder menu and then I turn off the external drive and disconnect it.  However, when I connect and turn the external drive to start it up again, the  a message comes up that it has not been ejected properly.  How am I supposed to eject the partitions and drive?
    Thanks for you helpl
    Vernon

When you set up time machine you should select which partition to backup to, after that it should be automatic, mine is.
I have not encountered your second problem, after ejecting the disks do you immeadiatley switch the drives off or leave them for 10-15 seconds to let them write the info stored on the disk drives internal buffer to disk?
I usually use the CNTL Click on the drive and select eject, but that should not be any different than using the Finder menu.

  • Flashing unmounted partitions on Time Machine drive

Using Lion 10.7.2 and an external 1TB WD My Book (firewire port).
This drive has 5 partitions, 4 of them Super Duper BUs which are not mounted,
and the rest of the drive is for Time Machine (500GB) and it is mounted.
When TM is doing its backup I sometimes see the unmounted volumes flashing
in the Finder under the DEVICES heading.
    Why is this?
Curiously if I mount them and then unmount them during the backup they
no longer show up in the finder.
    Why is this?
    respect....
    Peter

    Amy,
Find out why that annoying light is flashing.
Open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
Click on the amber dot for details and suggested actions
If everything seems to be OK otherwise, it might be a notice that an update is available for the Time Capsule.

  • Getting this error: Time Machine completed a verification of your backups. To improve reliability, Time Machine must create a new backup for you.

I keep getting this error on my new Macbook Pro w/ Retina.
"Time Machine completed a verification of your backups. To improve reliability, Time Machine must create a new backup for you."
Connected to a wifi network and QNAP storage system.  There are 5 computers on this network, and each backs up just fine.  The issue is isolated to this one machine.
This error shows up every week or so.

A third-party NAS is unsuitable for use with Time Machine, especially if it's your only backup. I know this isn't the answer you want. I know Time Machine accepts the NAS as a backup destination. I know that the manufacturer says the device will work with Time Machine, and I also know that it usually seems to work. Except when you try to restore, and find that you can't.
Apple has published a specification for network devices that work with Time Machine. None of the third-party NAS vendors, as far as I know, meets that specification. They all use the incomplete, obsolete Netatalk implementation of Apple Filing Protocol.
If you want network backup, use as the destination either an Apple Time Capsule or an external storage device connected to another Mac or to an 802.11ac AirPort base station. Only the 802.11ac base stations support Time Machine, not any older model.
Otherwise, don't use Time Machine at all. There are other ways to back up, though none of them is anywhere near as efficient or as well integrated with OS X. I don't have a specific recommendation.
If you're determined to keep using the NAS with Time Machine, your only recourse for any problems that result is to the manufacturer (which will blame Apple, or you, or anyone but itself.)

  • Time capsule error: Time Machine could not be configured. The built-in network interface could not be found.

Trying to install a new time capsule. I get access to the time capsule via Finder and I am able to surf the web. When trying to chose backup disk, it allows me to chose the Time Capsule from the list and type my password. I then get the following error message:Time Machine could not be configured. The built-in network interface could not be found.
    What now?

glad im not the only one with this issue...
i've been able to do one single time machine back up. tried to backup today and i am getting the "time machine could not be configured. the built-in network interface blah blah blah" crap.
Besides this "me, too" complaint with no information, what have you done about it?
    Have you tried this: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3275#5
    What is your backup destination?
What sort of Mac do you have (please update your profile)?

  • HT3275 I get this error Time Machine attempts a backup. The backup disk image "/Volumes/Data/Barbara's MacBook Pro.sparsebundle" is already in use."  Can anyone assist me in correcting the problem causing this?  Thanks.

Time Machine fails with this error: "The backup disk image “/Volumes/Data/Barbara’s MacBook Pro.sparsebundle” is already in use."
Can anyone assist me in correcting the problem causing this?  Thanks.

Reboot the TC.. Sometimes you need to reboot the whole network.
This is what comes of Lion and then made worse in Mountain Lion of Apple not spending enough time to fix the bugs.
    Read C12 in pondini.

C17 can be related I think.
