Partitioning External HD in different formats

I bought a LaCie 250GB hard drive which comes Windows peformatted which means I can't clone my hard drive to it and simple copying folders with custom icons seems to be no-go as well. I want to make two partions one that is HFS+ formatted to create a backup clone and another that will allow me to ocasionally use it on a PC to move files to my Mac. Is this possible. I notice in Disk Utilty it's possible to have different formats and although there isn't an option for MS-DOS there is an option that says Free Space. Would I able to use this on a PC without it wanting to reformat the drive?
Any help would be very much appreciated.

Yes, you can partition a drive with two different file systems but it will not work as you want it to. You would use pdisk, newfs_hfs, and newfs_msdos from the command line interface. Unforturnely, the HFS partition will not mount without manually attaching and mounting the HFS partition (will not be a bootable partition). The solution may be to buy a third party software product that can read and write to HFS on your windows box.

  • Partition external hard drive-what format do I use

I'm trying to partition an external hard drive by following the instructions in the disk utility help and am confused about which "format" to use. My choices are: Mac OS extended (Journaled), Mac OS Extended, Mac OS Extended (case sensitive, journaled), Mac OS Extended (case sensitive), Unix file system and Free space.
I've looked in the forums and in the disk utility for definitions of these terms and am sorry if its there and I just don't see it.
On a different subject is there any opinion as to whether I should create a partition that should or should not be used for startup? What is the difference and which is better?
    Thank-you very much,
    Margie

Choose Mac OS extended (Journaled) unless you have a specific reason to use another format.

  • Partitioning External HD in Windows Format

I have an existing External HD (Western Digital My Passport Essential 500GB), which has a Windows NT File System Format. I already saved approx 150gb files in it. I want to use this to back up my files in my Macbook Pro, but I'm hesitant to partition my External HD because it might erase my existing files.
How do I partition this without erasing any files?
    Thanks.

The simplest answer (although it may cost some money) is get another drive and format it as Mac OS Extended, then copy your files from the NTFS drive to the Mac OS Extended drive.  After doing this, you can reuse the NTFS drive as you wish.
I believe you will need to use Windows itself or a Windows disk management app to repartition an NTFS drive.  Even then, NEVER assume your data is safe when you are modifying the partitions.  Back up before repartitioning any drive.

  • Partition External Harddrive and part format Extended Journaled part fat32?

    Hello
I bought a Toshiba NTFS formatted External Harddrive for the safe keep of my files.
I want it to make partition into 2, and one part to format Mac Extended (Jounaled), one part to FAT32.
    Is this possible?
    Many thanks.

    Thank you very much.
    Can I have related question?
Is it possible to make 3 partitions on a harddisk?
    If it is,
Can I retain NTFS on a partitioned part?
Or does it have to be entirely formated to Mac readable/wrtitable fotmat?
I mean if I partision in 3 parts can I format
    part 1 Mac JOurnal
    part 2 FAT32
    part3 to retain NTFS?

  • External drive, how to format and partition?

    Hey everybody!
I'm about to buy an external drive for my mac. I am reasonably capable on a computer, but I've never done formatting or partitioning so I have two questions:
    1) I just want to check that I do not need to buy a mac-formatted drive. A little big of googling told me I could do the formatting myself with Disk Utility, just wanted to double check that that was true.
    2) Once I get my external drive, what I want to do is create two partitions within that drive, one for my Time Machine backup and one for random files and movies. I'm not sure how to do that (apparently I might need to pick different formats for each in Disk Utility?) so if anybody could help out that would be brilliant.
    Thanks
(if that helps, I have a MacBook Pro with a 512GB hardrive, and I want to buy a 1TB external drive)

    Hi,
Here is a link that will help you set up your external drive. http://www.cnet.com/how-to/how-to-set-up-an-external-hard-drive-for-use-with-os- x/
You won't need different formats for Time Machine backups and storage space partitions. However, given the size of your hard drive, 500 gb for Time Machine may not be enough. You could buy a separate one for Time Machine, budget permitting.
Check the size of your startup disk, and if it is only 250 gb or less, then 500 gb for Time Machine may be OK, for a while. It will soon fill up, but the older backups will be erased.
    Regards.

  • Same file is different sizes on differently formatted external HDDs

First question: I have two external drives; one is formatted for MS-DOS File System (FAT32) and the other is Mac OS Extended (Journaled). When I copy a folder from the DOS drive to the OS X drive, the folder is a different size on the two drives. Is this normal? Is there any chance that some of the data is missing or corrupted? If it's normal. is there a way to calculate what the difference should be so I can feel comfortable erasing the DOS drive once I've transferred everything off it.
Second (sort-of related) question: if I don't care to use my external drive with a Windows PC, what is the BEST format for the drive? Why? If I do want to use the drive with a Windows PC, what is the best format? Why?
Thanks so much wonderful and helpful other Mac users!

Hello! The different file sizes are normal in my experience. If you want to use it with both MSDOS is the only way but if Mac only the Mac HFS+ JOurnaled is best. Tom

  • Time Machine & newly re-formatted/partitioned external hard drive.

A couple of weeks ago I wanted to reformat a WD external hard drive, entitled "My External", from MS-DOS format into Journaled Mac OS X format.
I backed up my "My External" files to another separate external hard drive using Time Machine. When the back-up was complete, I proceeded to create 1 partition and reformat half of "My External" into the Journal Mac OS X format.
When the process was finished, the new sections were entitled, "Mac Only" and "Et Al". I entered Time Machine, expecting to see "My External" on the Finder window sidebar so I could restore files. However, all I saw was "Mac Only" and "Et Al" all grayed out.
Where did the back-up files for "My External" go? And is there any way I can get them back? PLEASE help. I thought using Time Machine would cover and back-up everything.
Thanks in advance for your time.

    Rini718 wrote:
Before, I do remember going back in time the cascade and seeing My External in the Finder sidebar and being able to click around in it. That's why I had assumed that it also backed up My External via Time Machine.
I tried your tip for the no-longer-connected drives; it seems that you're right about the MS-DOS AKA FAT32 format not allowing for back-up via Time Machine. I feel so ignorant/lied to by the display. -sigh-
I really don't think you saw the data. You probably saw the icon and name in the sidebar, and didn't notice that they were grayed-out on the backup windows (it's not particularly obvious, unless you're looking for it). And/or, you saw it on the first +Today (Now)+ window, and didn't realize it wasn't a backup. You would not be the first, unfortunately.
What do you suggest I do? I have the newly reformatted/partitioned Mac Only/Et Al External. I have not written anything to it since the day this all occurred, but I have let a salvaging program read it for a preliminary scan (the attempt did eventually fail though). Reading it shouldn't do anything to the data that may still be in it, si? Only writing to it?
    That's my understanding.
The app mentioned here most often is +Data Rescue 3,+ and it seems to get good reviews, but I haven't used it myself, so can't recommend it over any of the others.
Some of these have a free "trial mode," that will tell you if there's anything to be recovered, and perhaps recover a single file. For more, you have to pay the $$.
You'll also need another drive to receive anything it can recover.
Look for apps or services under +Data Recovery+ via Google, VersionTracker.com, or MacUpdate.com.

Once this is sorted out, I'd strongly suggest keeping secondary backups. See #27 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).

  • I would like to partition an external hardrive that is formatted to windows?

I would like to partition an external hardrive that is formatted to windows (Windows NT Filesystem) but the '+' box is greyed out, can anyone help? I have existing data on it and i would like to partition it to use with time Machine.

  • Booting os x from *partitioned* external firewire drive?

    Hi all,
my internal hard disk (on a 12" powerbook G4 867 mhz running osx tiger 10.4.10) has started acting weird (many people are reporting failing hard drives, and I'm assuming mine is failing too), so I'm preparing for replacing it with a new hard drive.
I've backed up the drive to an external firewire drive (LaCie portable 80 GB firewire drive "Design by F.A. Porsche") using Carbon Copy Cloner with the option 'make bootable' selected.
PROBLEM: I can't boot OS X using my clone on the external drive.
    I'VE TRIED:
    1. holding down Command-Option-Shift-Delete while booting to bypass the internal drive. (This didn't work: I saw an os 9 icon blinking/alternating with a question mark for a while, and then the computer booted from the internal hard disk.)
    2. holding down Option to select the external drive in Startup Manager. (Didn't work either: Startup Manager opened fine, but only showed my internal drive volume. I tried clicking the 'rescan' button, but it couldn't find my external drive.)
    3. SELECTING THE EXTERNAL DRIVE under Startup Disk in System Preferences. Note that the external drive volume *did show up* there. So under some conditions at least, the external volume is identified as a bootable volume. (This didn't work either, though: When I shut down the computer and booted up with the external drive connected, it still booted up from the internal drive.)
    POSSIBLE EXPLANATION?
My external drive is partitioned into three partitions of different formats:
    1. "Mac OS X Extended (Journaled)"
    2. "Mac OS X Extended (Journaled)"
    3. "MS-DOS File System (FAT32)"
The bootable volume is the first partition with the os x format.
Could my problem be caused by this partitioning of my external drive?
Either way, what to do?? I hope some of you savvy people out there can help me out.
    Cheers,
    Philip

    Hi Philip,
My problem has been fixed, & I imagine it's the same for you...:
With the excellent help from Dave Nanian at shirtpocket.com - the developer of 'SuperDuper!' (thanks Dave - you rock!), the problem (as Michael suggested) is to do with the Partition Scheme of the drive.
If your drive was like my portable LaCie Porsche drive, it was FAT32-formatted for PC out of the box. This format has an underlying MBR (master boot record) partition-scheme. When re-partitioning a drive in 'Disk Utility', the original partition-scheme sticks, so if you simply re-partition the drive to Mac OS Extended, it will still have an MBR partition scheme... which Macs cannot boot from!
For a Power PC Mac to be able to boot from an external firewire drive, the drive MUST have an APM (Apple Partition Map) Partition Scheme underlying the Mac OS Extended partitions. To do this, click on the 'Options' button in 'Disk Utility' when on the 'Partition' page before partitioning. You will see the options:
GUID Partition Table (for Intel Macs... (n.b. Power PC's cannot boot from a GPT drive))
Apple Partition Map (to create a bootable drive for a Power PC Mac)
Master Boot Record (to create a bootable PC drive)
So.... to make your external drive bootable for your Powerbook G4, choose 'Apple Partition Map' in the 'Options' page prior to partitioning.
Special note about Intel Macs: Contrary to info supplied by Apple, an Intel Mac CAN boot from an APM-partitioned drive (this is why the OSX installer can be univerally bootable!), BUT, the problem is that the OSX installer will NOT let you install OSX-intel on an APM-partitioned drive....
You can, however, clone an Intel-Mac-OSX internal drive that has a GPT partition-scheme (using CCC or SuperDuper) to an external drive with APM, & the Intel Mac will still be able to boot from that clone...
The only real use for doing this, though, is if you want a multi-partitioned backup drive with separate bootable partitions for OSX-PPC & OSX-Intel machines. (Remember that a PPC machine cannot boot from a GTP-partion-scheme drive, hence the need to use APM in this instance seeing as the Partition Scheme applies to the entire drive (it can't be different for each partition.)
Good luck - let us know how you get on!

  • Can a use a partitioned external hard drive to create a disk image? I tried, doesn't seem to work using disk manager.

Can a use a partitioned external hard drive to create a disk image? I tried, doesn't seem to work using disk manager.

OK, it's very bad computing to use a backup disk for anything but a backup. The reason being is if/when the HD crashes you will have lost not only all your backup but the data files. While I commend you for wanting redundant backup, you really need separate EHDs for doing so. Format each EHD using Disk Utility to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) using the GUID parttition. When you connect, OS X will ask if you want to use that drive as a Time Machine backup drive, select yes and then let it backup. On the second EHD format the same way however do not use TM as a backup, this time I'd suggest an app such as SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner to make a clone of the internal HD. Leave both EHDs connected and TM will backup new or changed files automatically on a hourly basis. The clone you will need to set to backup on the schedule you want. For example I have my SuperDuper EHD set to backup only changed or updated files at 2AM every day.
The advantage of a clone is that if the computers internal HD crashes you can boot from a clone and continue working, TM will not do that but it's great for keeping an archive of all files. So if you want a version of a file from many months ago, TM will help you locate and restore it.

  • Time Machine backing up partitioned external HD

    Hello ALL...
I want to setup Time Machine but I have a question. I hope I can explain it.
I have a firewire 800 Lacie 250GB external Hard drive that I want to divide into two partitions. One partition named 'Time Machine' is for Time Machine to use for backing up and the other partition named 'My Files' has file of all sorts on it. What I would like to know is...Can Time Machine backup all the files on the partition named 'My Files' to the other partition where I have named it Time Machine.
I Also like to have Time Machine backup my internal HD to the partitioned named Time Machine too.
Can Time Machine do all of this. I hope I am making sense!
    Thanks you in Advance.
    D

One word of caution, TM does not clone(Bootable Copy) your HD, it backs up everything on your HD that you set it for. You will need another application to accomplish this. One last word of caution, different makes of external drives work differently with the new OS 10.5.2. This only applies if you are shutting down your external drive after you have updated to either partition. The external drive icons cannot be removed by dragging them to the trash. You get a window that says that the volume is in use. If this happens the only way to remove the external drive icons from your desk top is to shut down and unplug everything. Then hold the Mac power button in for about 20-30 seconds and release. Then plug in only the computer, mouse and keyboard. Start your computer and then plug in your external drive. When the external drive icons appear on your desktop apple click them and drag then to the trash. Icons should then disappear. This info received from an Apple Tech Rep.and worked for me. However if you ever change these 2 partitions on your external drive you will have to repeat this process every time. No name given for this problem but the fix works. Apple should really address this issue. Good luck

  • Re: Different format for email PO

We are currently sending PO as PDF to vendors.
Some vendors are requesting that we send the data in text format to them.
we are sending PO thru INT (communication type).
However, it is linked to PDF format for internet under "Supported Address type".
Do i use back the same node to send and yet under different format?
OR do i need to configure another node under SCOT?

    Hi colin,
You have to config in 'scot'
    Basic settins required to config
    1. You must maintain an e-mail address in the address in the vendor master.
    2. The same applies to your own user master. You also have to specify an e-mail address there in order to identify the sender.
    • Note that it is not possible to change the e-mail address of the vendor via the SAP purchase order transaction (ME21N, ME22N, and so on).
    • The system only uses the e-mail address of the vendor that is maintained in the vendor master!
    3. For the output type for default values, a communication strategy needs to be maintained in the Customizing that supports the e-mail. You can find the definition of the communication strategy in the Customizing via the following path: (SPRO -> IMG -> SAP Web Application Server -> Basic Services -> Message Control -> Define Communication Strategy). As a default, communication strategy CS01 is delivered. This already contains the necessary entry for the external communication. Bear in mind that without a suitable communication strategy it is not possible to communicate with a partner via Medium 5 (external sending).
    4. Use the standard SAP environment (program 'SAPFM06P', FORM routine 'ENTRY_NEU' and form 'MEDRUCK') as the processing routines.
    5. In the condition records for the output type NEU (for example, Transaction MN04), use medium '5' (External send). Then in Transaction M/34 for the output type NEU add the medium '5' (External send) in Partner functions & Processing routines.
6.Then Create a PO…Go to Messages>select the output type & medium '5' (External send). Then communication method > Comm Strategy “CS01”. Remoce Print immediately if it is ticked.
    7. Then go back ,Select message>Further data>Dispatch time>Select 'Send immediately (when saving application)'
    Back and save PO.
    8. Check SCOT. PO will be in the waiting list. If u want to see the detailed list of waiting items then go to transaction SOST. Specify the Send date, select the check box Waiting & execute.
In t.code SCOT you can set the format conversions by using menu path SETTINGS --> CONVERSIONS and specifying that your sapscript out put (I think SCR) should convert to PDF and then put in the appropriate Function module (try SX_OBJECT_CONVERT_SCR_PDF).
You also have to allow PDF in the EXCHG node setup
If you want further details Please check the SAP note 191470.

Install software such as Paragon NTFS, or reformat it as Mac OS Extended (Journaled) or FAT32. Mac OS X 10.6.5 and newer can also read and write exFAT partitions.

QT Pro does not "do" multiplexed compression formats. For that you would need an external, third-party, MPEG-based application. iDVD, Toast, Visual Hub, iVCD, MPEG2 Works, etc. would work here to create some of these formats. QT Pro, MPEG Streamclip, and GarageBand can all create DivX and/or XviD files if you have the appropriate QT components installed. (Not sure if you can still find DivX 3 but assume free download of DivX 5.1.1, 5.2.1, and/or Xvid are still readily available on the internet.)
