Partitioning Hard Drive

I just placed a new hard drive into the second bay of my quad G5 and am thinking of partitioning it to hold the OS on one partition, the programs on the second partition, and my files on the third partition, would this be a good idea? Does it make a difference at all? Would it be best to just leave it as one partition?
Also, I just bought leopard and was going to install it on this new 750 gig hard drive, leaving tiger on my other smaller hard drive (then erasing it after the transfer). I have made multiple back ups of it with Super Duper, both a full backup as well as a sparse image, and using Backup (the umbrella program by Apple. After I install leopard what is the best way to transfer my data over? Basically, when I install Leopard what is it going to be looking for to do the transfer over? Also, should I do this manually or let Apples transfer do it for me?
Thank you!

There's no benefit to partitioning a single drive and then using it in the manner you suggest, since you're still accessing one physical drive. You may, however, get a slight speed benefit from installing system and data on separate physical drives, depending on what applications you're running and the size and speed of your drives. However, as Allan mentions, you have to be very careful about how you link the data to the system.
But the answer to your specific question is basically no.

  • I want to know if I can backup my Ipad to an external harddrive. I have a pc with xp pro media edition and a partitioned hard drive with very little space on C and lots on D. I am trying to update my Ipad to 5.1.1 and it says it needs 12  gb to backup.

I have a Sony Vaio desktop PC with a partitioned hard drive, running Windows XP Pro. There is 13 gb on C drive with the OS, and 140 gb left on D drive. I am  trying to update my Original Ipad from 4.3.4 to 5.1.1 and because C drive is full ( I have moved everything that can be moved to D drive) mostly from Microsoft updates over the years, I am unable to do  the backup Itunes is telling me I have to do to update or lose all media on this iPad. 12.67 gb is required to do the backup and I have a whopping 965.2 MB.  I can not get the cloud to use as backup as it requires 5.0 or better. Does anyone know if I can back up to D drive,  and if so how? Also, I have a 1 terrabyte WD mini external hard drive I just got as a gift...could I do the backup to it and, again, if so, how? Please explain from start to finish, as my brain is now fried from, first from finally getting Itunes updated to 10.6 ,and now trying to do this update. Thanks to anyone for their help!!

iOS device backups are stored in your iTunes library.
Move your iTunes library to an external drive.

  • Can I back up a bootable partition from an APM drive to a GUID-partitioned hard drive for storage, later to be able to clone restore the backup back to an APM and have it be bootable on a PowerPC?

Tongue twister of a question, huh?
I am creating a APM-partitioned hard drive for use with a PowerPC iMac G5, so I can have a fresh OS install on one as a reference, and the other be my usable OS.  Now, I also want to back both of these partitions up on a storage hard drive that I also want to contain partitions that are bootable on an Intel mac (GUID).  My question is, can I clone my APM partitions as backup to designated partitions on my GUID backup/storage hard drive (which I plan on being able to boot other partions on an Intel Mac), and have the option of later cloning the same APM partitions back to an APM-paritioned hard drive and have them still be bootable on a Power PC?  I know I won't be able to boot a Power PC from off of the GUID-paritioned drive, but I want to be able to restore my APM-partitioned drive incase things go sour with it.
Thanks so much for your time, guys!

Block-level copier that copies not just the files but the filesystem structure as well. But files can be moved from GUID to APM partitioned devices without any effect on the file. The partition scheme affects whether an installed system will boot a particular type of hardware.
If you installed OS X on a GUID partitioned drive you would not be able to boot a PPC Mac.
    And, you're most welcome.

  • Re-partitioning hard drive, XP to Win7 upgrade

Realizing that my existing XP Boot camp (3.0.1) partition was not going to be large enough for Win7, I deleted my existing partition along with my XP installation.
    Two issues
1- I now cannot partition my newly un-partitioned hard drive in Boot Camp. I got some message about the memory already being used, and the need for a journaled format.
According to Disk Utility, my HD format is Mac os extended (journaled). My RAID type is Mirrored RAID type.
Any ideas how to get my disk to partition? I did zero out all the free space on the drive before trying to partition.
2- To get to Win7, do I now have to reinstall XP, upgrade Boot Camp to 3.1, install Win7?
Another problem I seem to have is that i bought an Upgrade version of Win7. Is that going to work for me?
Thanks in advance for any help. NEIL

    Hi Neil,
1- I removed my previous boot camp partition. My Mac HD is mac osx extended (journaled). raid type is mirrored raid set, but raid size is 0 kb. What should my settings be, and where do i change them?
So you have a RAID set with Disk Utility but are not using it ?
What exactly is the 'layout' of your harddisks ?
If you don't use that once set RAID, it might be best to clean house right now and get rid of it.
Disk Utility can do this, but you have to backup your OSX first, since undoing a RAID deletes the content of the HDs/partitions in it.
2- in your post, you reference the following link within a thread http://codesociety.com/2008/10/23/boot-camp-cannot-partition-disk-files-could-no t-be-moved-error/ but this page is jibberish. Any other advice on what to do when boot camp cannot partition?
Sorry, seems that that page is gone for bad.
Like said, the BootCamp Assistant needs to find a free contigeous amount of diskspace of the size you specify in the BCA when partitioning.
That error you get implies that the BCA can not find it.
Have a look at my other posts in the thread I linked to, on how-to use an external harddisk and something like SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner to clone your OSX back and forth to get the needed free diskspace for the BCA.

  • I have a computer with a "partitioned" hard drive.  The "C" does not have enough space to backup and upgrade my iPhone 4.  How can I backup to my "E" drive instead of my "C"?

I have a computer with a Partitioned hard drive... the "C" drive, where everything defaults, is almost full and will not allow me to back up and update my iphone 4... can you tell me how to back up to my "E" drive?

Format the HDD in Disk Utility>Erase to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and the open System Preferences>Time Machine and set up the external disk as the Time Machine HDD.  Then look at the Options, and exclude what you do not want backed up.
    Ciao.

  • Do I need to install virus protection for the windows portion of the partitioned hard drive on the MacBook Pro?

Do I need to install virus protection for the windows portion of the partitioned hard drive on the MacBook Pro?

You are running Windows, so yes. I like Microsoft's built in protection and how 8.1 is 'hardened' but I also install Malwarebytes. I will not use Kaspersky anymore. But you do need something. And 8.1 is more secure than prior versions definitely but there were some major zero-day security updates on this month's "Patch Tuesday."
The forum for you is "Boot Camp" and this if you look above: Communities / Desktop / Mac Pro is not for MacBook Pro

  • Can my iSight work on partitioned hard drive with windows 7?

I have a macbook pro 17in screen, snow leopard. I have yet to get it updated to the latest operating system. I partitioned the hardrive to run windows 7. The built in iSight camera is not working. The dvd player will not visual to tv or projector. If I wanted to project a power point presentation, it wont transfer thru the hardware provided by the mac.

kmburr wrote: Can my iSight work on partitioned hard drive with windows 7?
Yes.  If you are using BootCamp to boot Windows®, see  Apple - Support - Boot Camp for help.
If you are using an virtualization emulator like Parallels, VMware Fusion, CrossOver Mac, or VirtualBox, seek help from its support site.
kmburr wrote:... The built in iSight camera is not working....
If the problem continues after turning Mac off for a minute or two and restarting in Mac OS X with no external devices connected, see Apple's How to Troubleshoot iSight.
Be sure to test more than one Apple camera app in more than one user account.
kmburr wrote:... The dvd player will not visual to tv or projector....
I do not understand this sentence. We can try to help with this after you get your other problems corrected.  However, to minimize confusion among problems right now, I suggest you not respond to this unless you can explain how it is related to your other issues.

  • One of the partitioned hard drive failed

    Hi,
One of the partitioned hard drive has crashed/damaged in my MacBook Pro.  And it happened to be main OS X installed drive.  But fortunately I have backup in my Time Capsule.  So, I am not that much worried about my datas.
However, now I am wondering is it possible to use that portion of the hard drive again? By erasing the partition and re-partition it? Since other partition is working fine. So, any one who has better idea about hard drive, any advice/solution would be much appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Dikesh

    dieskshjoshi,
that depends upon the nature of the crash/damage to your hard drive.
If it was a physical crash, then the problem could be either on the disk itself or on the disk heads. If the disk was damaged, then you should not use that portion of the disk again, unless you’re not concerned about subsequent loss in that portion of the disk. If the disk heads were damaged, then it will only be a matter of time before your other partitions will be damaged, and you should replace the hard drive with another one.
If it was a “virtual” crash, such as a filesystem becoming corrupted, then you could erase that partition, reformat it, and restore its contents from your backup.

  • Need Urgent help, I have made partition hard drive in my mac book and using OS mac

Need Urgent help, I have made partition hard drive in my mac book and using OS mac & Window8 seperately... for couple of days it works great for both window & OS mac But nowadays, my pc gets restart automatically while using window & even I cant access to my Mac OS...........  I got some error in window (error80070003) ...>>>>> Now how can I format whole drive & recover my Mac book OS.without boot disk.

I can't find that model. If you open System Profiler in the Utilities folder look for the Model Identifier over in the right hand display. What do you find for the model ID? If your computer supports Internet Recovery here's what to do:
Install Mavericks, Lion/Mountain Lion Using Internet Recovery
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
Boot to the Internet Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND-OPTION- R keys until a globe appears on the screen. Wait patiently - 15-20 minutes - until the Recovery main menu appears.
Partition and Format the hard drive:
Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
After DU loads select your newly installed hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion. Mavericks: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks and click on the Install button. Be sure to select the correct drive to use if you have more than one.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
This should restore the version of OS X originally pre-installed on the computer. If Mavericks is not installed, then you can reinstall it by re-downloading the Mavericks installer.
You will need to use Boot Camp Assistant in order to create a new Windows partition, then reinstall Windows.

  • I am about to update to OS Lion. Will this affect a previously partitioned Hard Drive atall?

I have a partitioned hard drive and am about to install an operating system upgrade of LIon. With an already partitioned harddrive are there any issues that I need to be aware of such as loss of data on the windows portion etc?
Thanks for any help or experience you have .

No, an OS X installation does not alter the partition map.
Back it up anyway, as a precaution against the unexpected.

  • Can i partition hard drive and run 10.6 on one and 10.4 on other

I have software that only runs under 10.4 on my older Imac. I would like to partition hard drive and run 10.6 on one and 10.4 on the other. Is this possible? Can I get instructions?

    Yes.
Just set up the partitions.  If you already have a 10.4.x and 10.6.x drives then "clone" them up as bootable backups with a backup utility like Carbon Copy Cloner or Super Duper.
When booting you can hold down the option key to get a list of bootable volumes (select with arrow keys and hit return).  You can use Startup Disk for either of them to define the default system to boot from if you don't use the option key technique.
If you don't already have these systems then of course you will have to install them in their respective partitions.
You have to realize of course that these are two distinct systems each with their own version of your login directory.

  • I am having trouble installing Lion on a partitioned hard drive.  Help?

    Aloha:
I am having trouble installing Lion on a partitioned hard drive
I have three internal HD's   The first I am running the system on 10.6.8 (which is up to date) , the second I do most of my work on  and the third I have partitioned into two and I am trying to install Lion on one of the patitions.
But Lion has decided it will only go on the first HD.
Above is the one I want to put it on, but it's not available and I can't change the partition scheme.  None of the things the directions state are usable??
What might I be doing wrong?
    Thanks
    Dan Page

Thanks again for a rapid responce.
I finally got lion on one partition and my daily "SilverKeeper" backup on the other.
Since the only thing I had on the two partition Hard drive  was  the back up and since the backup would get put on tonight any way I changed the drive to no partitions.  This gave me the ability to choose the GUID option, which I did and then I installed two partitions and successfuly istalled Lion on one of them.  I even tied Lion into the iCloud successfuly.
But I am not out of the woods yet!  I brought My brand new iPad to lunch and was informed that my iPad was synced to my Lion at home and I was on the cloud.  That blew my mind, I was impressed.
I then read  the Daily news with out problem, however, when I shut down my iPad, that was all she wrote.  I can not get the iPad back on.  The best I could do was see the revolving gear start and then freeze.  It's on charge now and I can not even get rid of the frozen gear.
Not sure this all has anything to do with the  recent installation on my main computer, but it's mighty suspicious.
    Need some help!!
    Thanks
    Dan

  • Cant partition hard drive :S

Ok - trying to load arch onto my main hard drive.  It is 160gb and have made a partition by right clicking on 'my computer' ->manage and shrinking my drive to 123gb and having a new ntfs volume or 25gb.
Thing is, when I boot from the arch cd and go to partition hard drive, the only one I can select is the entire 160gb. When I select that I get an error message too so cant even format my whole disk (even though I dont want to).
Any ideas on what I should do?

Ok, tried again, I go into the manual partition and the only drive is size 1600000, I get to choose a partition /dev/sda1 I think and then it give me:
Bad primary partition 1: Partition ends in the final partial cylinder :S
