"Mac OS X, Tiger Edition" by David Pogue (2005) briefly discusses the issue I raised on page 649ff. Under "The Software Base Station Effect," he says that a Mac with an AirPort card and an Ethernet or other connection to the internet (e.g. via DSL or cable modem) can serve as a "gateway" for other 802.11g equipped machines.
I've ordered a D-Link DWL-G650 802.11g Wireless Cardbus Adapter to install in the Dell laptop, and will see how it goes.

  • Link for Intel Display for windows vista

Hi! I need a link where I can download Intel Display for Windows Vista

If you don't find the driver on the Toshiba website, try the Intel website.

  • **Read Before Posting** Intel iMac FAQ (Windows, Speed, Compatibility, etc)

    Hi all -
In an effort to keep down clutter and repeated postings, I'd like to start this FAQ. Please, feel free to add to my basic topics.
    • First, the Intel Core Duo is Intel's Dual-Core chip, which is (as I understand it) a better version of the Pentium M series. Read more on Intel's Official Page.
    • Universal is Apple's term for applications that were built on the Universal Binary - which means they work natively, at full speed on BOTH Power PC (G4, G5, etc) and Intel processors.
    • Rosetta is Apple's emulation technology, which seamlessly runs in the background. This will emulate some of the older PowerPC-based applications that have not yet been released with Universal Binaries or released natively for Intel processors.
    • Windows. Apple is doing nothing to prevent it from being installed, but it is not supported in any way. It will most likely be tough to do, as (I don't believe) Windows can do anything with HFS+ drives, let alone BOOT from one. You would need to reformat and partition at the VERY least, as I don't know if Disk Utility can format in the Windows file system. Other drivers (such as the iSight and Airport Wireless) will most likely not be provided, either.
    • Other PCs. Mac OS X will not be able to be legally installed on any machines other than Apple Macintosh machines.
    Hope this helps a little,
    Kyle-

More details found on this site about Classic and Rosetta:
    http://daringfireball.net/2005/06/classicnotsupported
Rosetta is designed to translate currently shipping applications that run on a PowerPC with a G3 processor and that are built for Mac OS X.
Rosetta does not run the following:
Applications built for Mac OS 8 or 9
    Code written specifically for AltiVec
Code that inserts preferences in the System Preferences pane
Applications that require a G4 or G5 processor
Applications that depend on one or more kernel extensions
    Kernel extensions
Bundled Java applications or Java applications with JNI libraries that can’t be translated
    Classic is just not supported.
It is clear that apps that need the G4, G5 or Altivec Code won't run under Rosetta.

  • Do I need to partition storage space for windows 7 software?

I'm still debating if I should sell my Alienware and buy a MB Pro Ret and my main questions is concerning storage space.
I know that MBP can't compare to an Alienware gaming system but I hardly have time for that stuff anymore. I might play Skyrim every now and then, but that is the only game I care for really. I mainly want to have a light weight reliable laptop.
So... because I have so much software for my windows system now, I was looking into transferring that to the MBP. Lightroom 4, AutoCAD, Word and Exel, Photoshop... ext. ext. Which brings me to question:
Can I partition 50GB for the OS only and install all the software I have on that drive even if it wont fit on the Windows 7 partition?
    In other words
Do I have to calculate how much space all my programs will take up for Windows 7 and partition that amount or do I only need enough space for the OS?
I have never owned a Mac and am not familiar with the OS, I was debating if I should partition 500Gigs and slowly transition from Windows to iOS and maybe one day get rid of the Windows partition and just have the iOS on there.
I don't know... that's why I am here... Apple has a great community so let the advising commence... haha.
    Thanks for the help.
    Dallo
Forgot to mention: If I do get a MBPR it will be the 2.6GHz, 16GB Ram and 512GB Flash

It's recommended to create the partition with enough space for your programs, but if you create a very small partition, install Paragon Camptune X or WinClone to resize the Windows partition

  • Boot camp partitioned 32 GB for windows, but windows does not recognize it.

Tried today to install Windows XP on the Mac (hard disk = 320 GB) with Boot Camp 2.0.
Started the partitioning and left 20 GB for Windows, Boot Camp asked me to insert the Windows disk and start the installation. The computer started, the (ugly) Windows installation screen appears asking me if i want to install windows, repair windows or quit the installation. I continue with the installation and then it asks me which disk needs to be formatted. I saw only one option (red flag number 1) and moreover, this option stated that the disk mentioned was more than 132 GB (red flag number 2). Ignoring the red flags and quitting the installation, I continued. I formatted the disk and so on. All seemed to be going well. Then the computer restarted but ended up being in a loop (entering the windows installation screens and restarting the computer). It took a while till I figured out how to stop this loop and with the installation disc of Mac OS X I found out with disk utilities that the whole disc had been formatted (oh no!). With disc utilities I managed to format the whole disc again to make it suitable for a clean installation of Mac OS X and corrected the mistake which had been made.
Now - more cautious - having the clean Mac OS X installed I tried it again. This time I let Boot camp create a partition of 32 GB for Windows. Again I put the installation disc of Windows in the Mac and started the installation. Again, however, the Windows installation showed one disc with 132 GB on it. This time I quit the installation leaving it the way it is. The computer restarted and I let it boot into Leopard with the Alt/option key. There I see that Boot Camp seems to have done a good job. The 32 GB disk (MS Dos, FAT32) exists as a partition and there seems nothing to be wrong with it.
Who knows how to solve the problem with Windows which does only recognize one disc of 132 GB? Or who knows why the windows installation recognizes this as such?

This problem is caused by a Windows XP install disc without Service Pack 2.
    How to solve this problem?

  • Intel iMac running Windows

I am going into a Manufacturing Engineering Technology progam at college in the fall. I will be using the CAD design program which only runs in Windows.
I would really like to run the iMac Intel version with the Windows operating system on it. I understand that CAD can have glitches and was wondering if anyone has run it in these circumstances.
    Thanks for any info.

Use Apple Boot Camp to install WindowsXP in a partition of your hard drive.
Then, you'll be able to install CAD and run it natively on your iMac.

  • Partition my drive for windows 7 via boot camp

    IMac 20-inch, Mid 2007
2 GHz intel core 2 duo
I am trying tp use boot camp to partition my hard drive to install windows 7.  This is the error I receive.
"The disk cannot be partitioned because some files cannot be moved.
Back up the disk and use Disk Utility to format it as a single Mac OS Extended (Journaled) volume. Restore your information to the disk and try using Boot Camp Assistant again."
My hard drive is already formated as a Mac OS Extended (Journaled) volume, but it does not say as a "single" Mac OS Extended (Journaled) volume. Can anyone tell me what I can do to resolve this issue.

    Why is it so hard?
1000 and 1 times: the drive must have FREE contiguous unfragmented space and some files are blocking and preventing.
Some are able to find and delete, some by booting from another hard drive or OS X DVD to repair and/or run iDefrag.
    Or.... backup; erase; and restore.
ie, CLONE your hard drive in both directions. My choice would be SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner. They tend to work. Defrag tends to be slow and if there is no backup and there is an error.... well, you'll find out.
Apple error message is badly and poorly worded. Said so for over 3 yrs and it has not changed or improved though.
Paragon CampTune 9.5 $19 is great for Boot Camp. And resizing. And Windows 7 may need 2 or 3x what the base minimums listed. 32-48GB at least to be safe. And those are conservative numbers.

  • Turning on Intel-VT for Windows 7 to install XP Mode virtualization

    Hi:
I have the 13.3" MacBook Air 2010, 2.13GH CPU, 256GB RAM Disk, 4GB RAM. I installed BootCamp successfully to run a dual-boot system partitioned as: 160 GB for Win7 and 92GB for OSX. I install 64-bit Applications as much as possible, though some Win7 are still 32-bit. I find I still need a couple of Applications that will no longer be upgraded and that run under WinXP. So, I would like to install Windows 7 "XP Mode" to handle this situation.
I do not wish to install VMWare. The CPU from Intel has Intel-VT. I need to insure that this function is ENABLED in order for virtualization using Windows XP Mode runs properly. As I cannot see how to access the BIOS as I might under an HP computer, I need help from Apple to see how to enable Intel-VT.
I suspect that Bootcamp has supplied me some drivers. I do not know where to look.
Apple; will you help so that I can install Windows 7's XP Mode form of virtualization? Thank You.

    Answers: 1) Yes, 2) Yes.
As for the tip, that does work--if you run Palm Desktop, from which you can launch HotSync Manager (at least in 6.2). You can't run just HotSync Manager alone since it resides in the system tray and not the taskbar, and in order to attach the Palm to USB you need access to an app on the taskbar.

  • Running intel imac under windows?

i just bought a new imac intel dual core and im extremely new to the mac world and not to great with computers so i was wondering if i could get some help with this.
i was reading up on some forums and found out that the imac's with the intel technology can run in either windows or mac OS X and i just have a couple questions right now.
    1) how do i get my mac to run under the windows OS?
    2) is it possible for me to switch between the mac and windows OS's?
i would really appreciate your honesty.

I am going to set up my iMac, on Saturday, to run Windows. I was originally going to purchase VirtualPC but out came BootCamp . . . Give it a read. Switching between the 2 OS's does not really happen. You boot off of one or the other, however you can move files (again, check the restrictions [30Gig]) between the 2 OS's.

  • Partitioning Hard drive for Windows Use

Hopefully someone has the solution to this.
I have been trying to partition part of my hard drive for the past couple of days because there is a program I need for a class I am taking that only works in Windows. Every time I try to partition a portion of the drive, it tells me some files couldn't be moved. It also tells me to format the drive and restore it. I am willing to do this, but the instructions on using the disk utility that it gives me do not work.
I would be most willing to use the systems disk to repair anything I need to or just re-install, but I have misplaced those disk.
How do I go about replacing these disk?
Also, is there another way to partition part of this drive?
It is my internal drive that was installed in the laptop.
Thank you so much for taking the time to read this!

You can reformat your hard drive with a snow leopard disk, which maybe a friend has or you can buy one for something like $30.00? Then your mac would be wiped clean as you know.. I have seen this problem before when installing windows on a mac and don't know what causes it. I reformatted my mac and then installed windows fine. Other times I have installed windows it went perfectly fine.

  • 21.5" imac for windows mmorpgs?

Hello all, im thinking about buying the base 21.5" imac. Im going to install windows 7 and i want to be able to play mmorpgs on it (dragons nest, terrra rising, raiderz). Would the base model be ok for this? the 512mb is very questionable to me...seems so weird to have all the rest of the specs good except the video card and the only decent video card looks like the 1gb one for the higher end 27" model which, i didnt wanna have to do. other that that, just inernet browsing, light video editing will be done on this computer. thanks in advanced

A based model 21.5" iMac isn't the right machine for what you want to do, I'd suggest at least a model with 16GB of RAM as the RAM isn't upgradeable on 21.5" 2012 iMacs.

all of my apps are very erratic, ex; windows opening and closing by themselves, blue tooth keyboard very buggy, unable to change personal preferences, etc.

  • Advice for Windows 7 Install

    So here's what I have:
    iMac (Generation before current)
    2.66 GHz
    Intel Core 2 Duo
    4 GB RAM
about 200 gigs left on my 500 gig hard drive
    Running Snow Leopard
If i buy windows 7 (32 bit) and install it on here (just using boot camp, no parallels) how much should I partition. The main purpose is to use an HDPVR I have to capture my gaming consoles. I also might do some gaming with Steam. What is the recommended partition?

    Hi,
for Windows 7 a minimum of 40GB is recommended.
Add to that the amount of disk space needed for the programs, games and the files you work with.
A "typical" size for a Windows partition is not there, since it really depends on the useage of Windows.

    Stefan
