Partitioning issues?

I have a MacBook Pro 15.4 inches running Mac OS Lion. I was trying to install windows 7 using boot camp but I keep running into this issue where it gives me this error message:
"The disk cannot be partitioned because some files cannot be moved.
Back up the disk and use Disk Utility to format it as a single Mac OS Extended (Journaled) volume. Restore your information to the disk and try using Boot Camp Assistant again."
I tried using Disc Utility. I first tried to create a backup on an external Hard drive but it didn't work. It said the file was too large. I had plenty of space. Where do I create the backup then and how do I restore the backup? I have a single partitioned drive.
Alternatively, will formatting my computer to factory settings work? I don't care much for the data, I have a backup for that. If so how long will it take me to do it and how do I do it.
I'm not quite sure what I'm supposed to do. I'm fairly new on Macs. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Shrink your Mac HFS partition as much as you can, then extend it back out to full size.
This has been asked almost daily for last 4 yrs or ever since Boot Camp has existed.
Need to have free contiguous, unfragmented, free space, with no files locked or interferring with creating a new partition. Shrink can work where BCA fails.
Cloning your system back and erase + restore also usually works.
Booting from a special CD can also (iDefrag, iPartition) though actually CampTune is probably worth a look $19.
A list isn't going to really help, is it.

  • Disk Utility Partition Issue- 1Tb Seagate External

    Hi All-
I recently received a 1Tb Seagate external hard drive connecting via a Firewire 400 cable. Problem is, it won't let me reformat the thing as a single, continuous partition map. 2 is a problem as well: it only lets me format it if one side of the partition is MS-DOS and the other is OSX Journaled. if both as OSX, then Disk Utility once again fails to partition the drive. Is there some lurking cap on hard drive capacity that the MBP can understand?
    Thanks.

I bought recently the Seagate FreeAgent Desk 500 Gb drive (the USB only Windows preformatted model since this one was 150$ cheaper than the made-for-Mac model with FW ports). I had the same problem as you ("one side of the partition is MS-DOS and the other is OSX Journaled"). My friend on an iBook G3 PPC running Panther bought the same model and didn't experience such problems (and was able to upgrade easily from 10.3.9 to 10.4.11 after her initial system backup).
However, I was able to reformat my Seagate drive with Disk Utility and use Time Machine afterwards to backup my entire MacBook Pro but since Disk Utility was showing MS-DOS (FAT) as a volume format for the main external drive, I was worried about future backup problems.
Then I read this recent news on MacFixIt ( http://www.macfixit.com/article.php?story=20090111225651243 ) about this particular issue since the 10.5.6 update and possibly 10.5.5. I followed the instructions (as explained originally in this thread ( http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=8700407& ) and reformatted my USB external drive and everything went smoothly and as it should be. The GUID option did it for me.
Hope it does it for you.

  • Installing Windows 8.1 with bootcamp, partition issues.

So I am trying to install windows 8.1 onto my MBP running the latest 10.9.2 operating system. It took a while to get the HD to successfully partition, however when I finally got it working, upon booting from the USB drive I got this error message
windows cannot be installed to this disk. the selected disk has an mbr partition table windows can only be installed to GPT disks
Is there any way to change the partition table or to fix this?
I just tried restoring the partition to one, verifiying and repairing the disk in recovery mode, then re-running boot camp, issue persists.
    running late 2011 15" MBP

Well, when you start the computer you should press ALT to show the boot manager. With Windows 8 and 8.1 (for Windows 7 there's not this problem) there should be three different icons: the OS X one, and then two called Wininstall (or something like that) and the other is similar but there should be written something like "EFI Boot".
Well, don't choose the EFI Boot one and you should be fine.
If you choose the first one the Windows installer format the Bootcamp partition correctly, and then you can start the procedure.

  • Boot Camp Partition issue (still on OS X 10.4.8)

    Hi all,
I'm trying to get Windows 7 up and running on my 2 year old MacBook Pro. Just bought the full version of Home Premium, as I've never installed any Windows on my mac before. Also, I haven't gotten Snow Leopard yet, so I'm still on OS X 10.5.8, which I think means a slightly older Boot Camp.
So I go in to Boot Camp Assistant and try to partition my 50 free gigs into about 20 for windows and 30 for mac. Trying several times, it always comes up with the error "The disk cannot be partitioned because some files cannot be moved" and says I should back up my disk, make sure it is formatted as OS Extended (Journaled), and restore the disk from the backup. This is the part I don't know how to do exactly. Is it saying I have to basically wipe my HD and restore it from my external HD? Under restore in the Disk Utility I can drag my external drive into the "source" box, but can't put my mac HD in the "destination" box.
So, anyone have any tips on how to move forward with the partitioning? Is it merely a space issue like I think, or is it a larger problem having to do with not being on Snow Leopard yet? I appreciate any advice or suggestions, I'm sick of spending so long trying to figure this out, haha.
    Thanks!

I wish Apple would expand their own tutorial. The Boot Camp pdf; the FAQ; but it can be done with your OS X DVD and Apple Disk Utility's Restore; with other programs that are free, but require (essential to my thinking) that you have another drive or partition that you can boot from.
Windows and you have rescue CDs. With a Mac you can have and boot OS X from multiple hard drives.
Install OS X to drive #2 and use that to erase and restore.
TimeMachine is 'okay' but you can't boot from it. And I've got to say a bootable backup is more important tool.
The two most popular are Carbon Copy Cloner
    http://www.bombich.com or from http://www.macupdate.com
SuperDuper from Shirt-Pocket Software, free for full copy, $29 for smart update of backup. Great PDF and of course no one looks to use the Help menu in programs (like Disk Utility even).
Those backups can be important and handy to have before installing any Mac OS update.
And there should be some 'Stickies' or "Most Popular Threads" or something because this question has been at some times a daily topic.

  • Disk partition issue.Cant allocate the free space for windows.ls help.

I have created a partition for OS X (200GB journaled, encrypted) and also left 51GB unallocated for Boot Camp later on.
After I successfully installed OS X 10.9, I wanted to install Windows 8.1 with Boot Camp. But Boot Camp only wants to shrink the Macintosh HD partition, and doesn't want to use the free space left on the drive. So I switched to Disk Utility, to try it that way. But in Disk Utility I wasn't able to create a new partition (if I press the 'partition' button it just doesn't do anything).
Next, I tried to switch of File Vault 2, let it decrypt itself, restart, and then try it again in internet recovery mode. But still, I cannot expand the Macintosh HD-partition or create a new partition.
    Disk Utility log:
    2014-09-04 00:42:31 +0200: Preparing partitioning: 'APPLE SSD SM256E Media'
Also, Disk Utility tells me there is 200.000.000.000 bytes of 200.000.000.000 bytes used, and 0 bytes of free space. Even though not even half of the drive is colored blue (which displays the amount of data on the drive). Finder tells me only 88GB is used.
I used the new installation for no longer than half a day, so there can't be issues that data is spread over the whole volume. Disk Utility can't find any problems, and tells me the disk and all of her volumes are okay (in green texts).
I also tried to start from a windows-install-usb, and tried to make a partition of the 'unallocated space', but then Windows tells me that it fails because the volume is part of the 'GPT partition style'.
What do I have to do to repartition my volumes!?
    I'm using a MacBook Pro Retina 15" (MacBook Pro 10,1) with a 256GB SSD (251GB according to OS X).

As you're finding, a limitation of basic disk is that it only allows 4 primary partitions or 3 primary partitions and an extended partition.
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd163549.aspx
For information on converting basic to dynamic as well as considerations prior to doing so, consult this article.  It should help you make a decision whether or not you want to convert the disk:
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd163552.aspx
If you decide to convert, get a backup so that no matter what you're covered. Not that it's risky, but better safe than sorry.

  • Hard disk partition issue and space issue

Hello i was trying to do a partition on my hard disk on my macbook pro retina. Wen i go to disk utility and try it says i need to repair the disk. I used command r in reboot and repaired but still having issues. When i look at space i get two different space available on macintosh HD. Here are the pictures you will see the space available is different depending what i choose. I am confused. Any help is appreciated. Here are the pics.

When you boot using Cmd-R, you're booting from a hidden Recovery Partition. That partition is using part of the space that is the size difference you're seeing between the Media line (upper picture) and the boot partition line. You can turn on the Debug Menu which shows the extra partitions using these directions.
I'm not sure but I suspect the issue may be that your boot partition is encrypted.

  • OMG Please help with Win XP partition issue FAT32 NTFS

I know that there are other posts about this, but I have not been able to find the answers to my problems
I had the issue that others had with not getting the option to format the bootcamp partition during my XP Pro install. I used the FreeDOS solution to format the drive, but I am now left with an 80gb FAT32 partition which is not really what I wanted.
Reading other posts, resizing the partition does not seem to be an option. I guess that I use Winclone to backup my XP partition, wipe out the partition using Bootcamp, but where do I go from here????
    A couple of questions:
    1) Can a backup of a FAT32 partition be restored to an NTFS partition?
    2) How the bl**dy **** do I format the bootcamp partition as NTFS if I do not get the option of formatting during the XP install and FreeDOS wants to format as FAT32.
By the way if anyone has the answer that involves not having to wipe the FAT32 partition but shrink / reduce it to say 15gb and allow me to create a 65gb NTFS partition - there is a big sloppy kiss waiting!!!!
I was hoping that I could just use something like Partition Magic within my 80gb bootcamp partition to resize the FAT32 then create and format the NTFS partition?
Sorry for babbling and thanks for reading and hopfully ending my pain.
    Ian.

I have found this http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307881 that allows the conversion of a FAT32 partition to NTFS. . . . looks like I will give this a go tonight.
    Ian.

  • ORPHAN PARTITION ISSUE IN V11.1.2

    Hi All,
we are moving from V9 to V11. Currently we have replicated partitions between databases (same app) and they obviously work fine in V9. However, when trying to create the same replicated partition in V11 (jusing V11 EAS etc) the partition validates and saves fine.. HOWEVER one half of the partition is immediately orphaned when saved, when looking at the Date source information, the "Current Host" looks weird, even though the information was initially correct when the partition was set up. It goes from "HYPESSBASE-DEV.***.***.co.uk:1423" to "[::1]:1423
If I then repair the partition, it appears to work. However, when you then right click to either edit, validate etc you are only presented with the "Repair" or "Delete" partition.
I would add that our environement is split, with the Essbase server being on one physical server, and all the central function (foundation, shared servcies, EAS) on another server. Not sure if even relevent but you never know.
Any ideas of this strange behyaviour?

    Hi Paul,
Can you please explain the solution in detail. We are having the same issue but I couldn't repair the Partition successfully. I throws the below error,
Error: Name too long (vinhvd-hes04.visyap.pratt.com:1423) in ESSAPI function EssPartitionNewDefFile
    Thanks,
    Arun

as you can see my partitions are being mounted TWICE which is not what I want or expected!
is there more documentation on what systemd does with mounts that could explain why i have multiple mount points for partitions or is this due to systemd discovering my partitions & mounting them at points based on label names & then parsing my FSTAB as well!
I have read the wikki but there is very small info there & the links have not provided an explanation for this unwanted behaviour

    OK,
After being spurred on to try to do this thing properly, this is what I came up with today.
My fstab line (for a USB NTFS disk):
    /dev/sdb1 /media/samsung ntfs-3g noauto,users,rw,nodev 0 0
Then I created the /media/samsung folder and gave the audio group read/write permissions.
It seems that non-root users can only mount an ntfs partition if they use a version of ntfs-3g with fuse included, so I replaced ntfs-3g with the version from AUR, having removed from the PKGBUILD file the option "-with-fuse=external" (see this thread: http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=44844 ).   I also had to set
the ntfs-3g binary to setuid-root, dealt with here: http://www.tuxera.com/community/ntfs-3g … privileged (note- the instructions say this is discouraged, but it seems using ntfs partitions in linux requires some compromises).
I can now mount the drive as an ordinary user.
Then I set mpd back to run as user mpd, checked the audio group had access to all the mpd folders, and all was well.
One hiccup which you might not have: mpd was unable to access my (external) sound card at first.  To solve this one, I used
    chmod 770 /dev/snd -R && chgrp audio /dev/snd -R
As far as I can remember, that's everything.

  • Installation/Partitioning Issues

    Hi
Brand new to Bootcamp. I have Parallels installed but disgusted with the USB issues. Would like to install my Vista Home Premium software with Bootcamp. After initiating the "partition" task I get this message: THE DISK CANNOT BE PARTITIONED BECAUSE SOME FILES CANNOT BE MOVED. It then suggests "Back up the disk and use Disk Utility to format it as a single Mac OS Extended (Journaled) volume. Restore your information to the disk and try using Boot Camp Assistant again." Am I having this problem because I have Parallels installed?? Should I delete the Parallels before installing Bootcamp.
    Thanks
    Don S

Use Disk Utility or SuperDuper to clone your hard drive and have a bootable copy.
    Reformat and restore.
    Set to go.

  • Yosemite partition issues (greyed options)

    Running:
    Hard disk: 3TB Fusion drive
I recently upgraded to YOSEMITE and then after decided it would be useful to add WINDOWS 8 on bootcamp for various reasons.
    What I did:
Partition my 3TB Fusion drive to 2.68TB YOSEMITE / 318 MB WINDOWS
Format the new WINDOWS partition in NTFS (using paragon software)
    Result:
My new partition seems to have formatted (itself) to Mac OS journaled (how/why?)
Now all options to resize or delete partitions are grey out. I can't change anything
    What have I tired:
Booting into disk utility (command-R) to access the drives, but all options are still greyed out
Tried reverting the disk as per some threads, but have failed (please see disk info below)
Haven't yet tried boot to an external Mac OS build to attempt to change/influence the partitions as I have read a thread that didn't yield results with this giving a sort of checksum error. I'm at a loss, any advice would be gratefully welcomed!

If you want to delete the WIN-HD Logical Volume Group (LVG) you need to open Terminal and issue the following command using the LVG's UUID which is the string of letters/numbers/dashes above the Name:   WIN-HD line in your screenshot. This will delete that LVG and should result in free space that you can add back into your Fusion Drive. Is this what you're trying to do?
    diskutil cs delete 1E8D3C5F-1026-4EC8-B4F4-D51FE588EBF9
With a Fusion Drive you can ONLY add 1 additional partition outside of the Fusion drive which is what you currently have.
Can I add a partition to the hard disk with Fusion Drive?
Using Disk Utility, you can add one partition to the hard disk on Fusion Drive. Once you add the partition, the "plus" symbol in Disk Utility to add additional partitions will be grayed out. You cannot partition the Flash storage.
If I create a hard disk partition is it part of Fusion Drive?
The additional partition is not part of Fusion Drive. The new partition is a separate volume that is physically located on the hard disk drive.

  • Boot Camp partition issue

    Hi everyone!
I got my first MacBook Pro today, it's a 17 inch from 2010 (About This Mac tells me it's a MacBook 6,1 for what that's worth!) and I need to install Windows. OS X is great, but I'm still learning it and my games don't play on it. I tried running the Boot Camp Assistant and it keeps throwing up an error like "The startup disk cannot be partitioned or restored to a single partition" and I don't know how to get around it. When I got the MacBook (which I bought from a friend), I used the OS X install disk and reinstalled the operating system. I wiped the hard drive with Disk Utility and did a clean install. I checked and I'm not seeing any other partitions.
Can anyone give me a hand here?
    Thanks!

You should visit the Bootcamp forum rather than post here in the Macbook Pro forum. The Bootcamp gurus hang out in the Bootcamp forum and your issue has been answered there many times.

  • Task Sequence Windows Server 2012 format and partition issue when using MDT2012

    Hi all,
Currently I'm working on a task sequence to deploy a Windows Server 2012 image. We've integrated MDT2012 Update 1 in SCCM2012 SP1 and created a default 'Server Task Sequence'. This task sequence deploys the install.wim to a server which has multiple disks
    attached.
We've configured multiple format and partition disk steps to create the following partition layout:
Disk 0: 499MB BDEDrive (do not assign drive letter) + 40GB OSDisk
    Disk 1: 40GB Programs
    Disk 2: 40GB Data
    Disk 3: 25GB User
When the task sequence is finished I've noticed the drive letters assigned to the disk are not correct. In some cases the BDEdrive gets drive letter D assigned, sometimes drive letters are assigned starting with E, thus skipping drive
    letter D.
The smsts.log files show an error when it's re-assigning drive letters after booting into Windows. Looks like an error in the DiskPartScript.txt.

When I take a look at the generated diskpart_script.log file the volume D gets selected twice, which fails the second time because of the first remove drive letter command.

It seems this error is caused by the first 'Format and Partition Disk' step before the 'Use Toolkit Package' step which is part of the default Server Task sequence. When I disable this Format and Partition step and create the partition manually
all looks ok showing no errors in the smsts.log file.
I've solved this by replacing the first 'Format and Partition Disk' step by an Powershell command which formats and partitions the disk.
    Anyone seen this behavior?

I have a similar problem when I install windows on some clients. Have you found any explanation for the behavior?

  • NTFS Partition Issues not allowing install on MBA 2012, Win 8.1

MacBook Air 2012, Mavericks & Windows 8.1 install
    Hi there,
I am going mad trying to install Windows 8.1 from a USB drive via BootCamp. I have made the ISO Windows 8.1 installation disk. I have downloaded the appropriate driver files & seem to be doing everything right. However when I get part way through the process after selecting the Window partition size (40GB) I am running into problems.
When I go to install Windows to the BootCamp partition I get the error message that "Windows cannot be installed to this hard disk space. Windows must be installed to a partition formatted as NTSC". Formatting it does not help & when I refresh it still gives the same message. I have deleted the partition & created a new one but still cant proceed.
In disk utility, I can see that it is formatted in NTFS but no matter what I do it will not proceed & gives me an error message. The other error message that I get is "We couldn't create a new partition or locate an existing one. For more information see the setup log files".
I have searched the net but not found an answer to this problem. I am desperate to get this fixed. Thanks in advance.

I got stuck at the same spot.  Once I removed my USB flash drive, it let me continue

  • OS X Yosemite (10.10.3) Boot Camp Partition Issue

I just updated the system to OS X 10.10.3 with the OS X Yosemite Recovery Update too. My boot camp partition went missing!!! I checked Disk Utility to see what is happening, the reply is "Repair the disk", when i click on Repair, it say the disk cannot not be repaired and needs to be reformat. Any one know what is happening?
P.S. I had post this question a while ago and stupidly click on Solved, so if you saw it please ignore it

Use Windows 7 installation media and repair master boot record !! That's it !!
