Partitioning Question - Add/Remove

Please forgive any naivety throughout this post - I've never had to partition before without being handheld via BootCamp.
I'm currently on a MBP 2010 with a 500GB stock HDD. The HDD is not partitioned - excluding the main 'Macintosh HD' one which contains all of my stuff, including OS X SL.
However, I'd quite like to give Lion a whiz-around before updating...so:
1. Could I partition my Macintosh HD without erasing it? Disk Utility seems to think so, but I don't want to hit Go and see my data get forgotten...
2. Could I then remove this secondary partition without erasing my original to give the original all 500GB back? Essentially reverting question 1.
Assuming the answer to both of the above is yes, could I then take this a step further...
3. Could I move all my stuff across to the other partition, via various methods, and delete the original 'Macintosh HD' one to essentially replace it with the new Lion one?
As I said, forgive me if these are silly questions but I'm new to this. Answers, suggestions and advice much appreciated.

So, with externals out of the question - what would you suggest?
That you do nothing, don't mess with Lion without a external bootable 10.6.8 clone, unless you like the hours long painful rebuilding from your 10.6.8  install disks because that's what it's going to come to. And you'll lose all your files because you have no external backup.
CCC is free, a external hard drive is about $100 for a 1TB. You can be up on the 10.6.8 clone in the time to takes to boot and be erasing Lion from your internal and reverse cloning all while watching TV or going out for dinner.
If you can't spring for that then I don't know what else to say but just leave things alone.
Lion is going to cost $29, your third party programs will likely not work and perhaps even require a paid upgrade.
Your looking at spending money in any case, if you don't want to spend money then do nothing, leave your machines alone and let them run as long as they can without messing with them any.

  • Add/Remove Question

I've browsed through the forums and Faqs, but the answer I'm looking for isn't clear and most of the terms used here are nothing more than a foreign language.
    I have one simple question...
Under my Add/ Remove Programs listing, there are 3 entries for Java:
    - Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_04
    - Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_05
    - Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_06
Are all of these required, or can the earlier versions safely be removed without harming the program?
    Thank you,
    LisaDarln

They are separate versions of the same program. Any of them can be removed without affecting the others. The 1.4.2_06 is the latest version.
However, you may have other applications that require a specific version to run, and removal of that version would then cause the dependent application to fail.
If so, the removed version could be reinstalled.

  • Je ha, auto add/remove machine?

Cloud servers such as Amazon ec2 have the ability to start/stop machines easily.
Can I add/remove machines for ha groups automatically? And how to decide when to do that?

I haven't asked this yet so, do you already have an application built on top of JE HA? How many nodes are there in the replication group? Are you observing a good throughput in the application (for read and write operations) and implicitly a reduced latency in response times?
There's no guide or documentation material covering what exact information you should be looking for when deciding whether there's a need to add or remove a replication node.
JE HA is a single master/writer - multiple clients/readers HA system, so adding a node to a replication group increases the ability of the group to do reads, and makes additional copies of the data, which makes it more secure. Though, it does nothing for writes.
The decision to add a node to a replication group (generically, not necessarily for a JE HA rep group), aside the infrastructure, network partitions, bandwidth, hardware availability, replication factor etc criteria, should be governed by the expected response time for a read operation (the time it takes a node, replica nodes or master node, to service a query). This is something the application should monitor and when the read request's response time increases above an allowed limit, you could add a new (replica) node. Of course, all of this revolves around load balancing the read requests, which is a good use case for using a Monitor node in the rep group that routes requests (both write and read requests) and balances the read requests between the replicas.
Another criteria for deciding to add a new node can be the availability of enough replicas to satisfy the durability and consistency policies.
CPU/mem/disk info are outside of JE's ability to obtain -- there are system tools that you can use to collect such info. Replication related information can be obtained in JE through the ReplicatedEnvironmentStats and through the monitoring and diagnostic JMX MBeans RepJEMonitor and RepJEDiagnostics (or the RepJEJConsole JConsole Plugin).
Though, what you really need to do at this stage is to see what the latency and throughput is, at the application level. Plus there's the question of load balancing, so you need to be aware that you have to spread the reads among different nodes.
You should also your system stats. Are the replicas loaded to the max or not? If they're very loaded in terms of CPU and I/O, maybe you need more rep nodes.
Whereas for removing, you could remove a node from a rep group if for example the master spends too much time to achieve a durability ack policy (ReplicatedEnvironmentStats.getAckWaitMs() might be useful in this case) or if the replica node is lagging the master too much (compared to the other replica nodes -- ReplicatedEnvironmentStats.getTrackerLagConsistencyWaitMs() is relevant).

  • Windows App Certification Kit - Test Fails for Validate Desktop App at "Write appropriate Add/Remove Program values"

    Hi,
I am trying to validate a .Net Framework 4 WinForms application for use in the Microsoft Partner Network portal.
I am using Windows App Certification Kit 3.4 for Windows 8.1 , and the Validate Desktop App option.
To build the package I am using InstallShield 2012 SPR Limited Edition (for Visual Studio), and the validation fails
only with the following error (please also see the attached image):
Clean reversible install test: Failed to Write appropriate Add/Remove Program values
Error Found: The registry population test detected the following error: app didn't create the required registry entries.
A non-optional value 'DisplayName' is missing or invalid (same for 'Publisher', 'ProductVersion')
Please note that I have filled in all the publisher/product details in the InstallShield project, on the General Information page.
Also I have tried to use the Microsoft Visual Studio Installer Project for VS2013, and the validation failed with the exact same error.
Any help would be very appreciated.
    Thank you.

You may need to add the necessary info to the app’s Windows Installer package so it can configure Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel correctly. Setting these properties automatically writes the corresponding values into the registry. From the picture,
you are missing some necessary information about your desktop app.
Also You need the correct admin permissions to write to the registry.

  • Removing Acrobat 9 Standard from my pc's Add/Remove screen

My pc is on Windows XP Professional.
I am unable to remove "Acrobat 9 Standard" application from my PC's "Add Remove Programs" screen.  The application shows up in the list and when I select the Add/Remove option I get this message.  The program is not now on my PC.
"This action is only provided for products that are currently installed".
I tried the Acrobat Tech support suggestion:
To use the microsoft special products removal program.  Microsoft has since removed that program (because of technical difficulties it's use caused) and Microsoft now suggest that I use the normal Add/Remove procedure for removing a software package from my pc.  That process does not work.
Note:  Acrobat 9 Standard was removed originally, but the program was still displayed on the Add/Remove screen.  Now I want the program to go away from my Add/Remove Screen and do not know hot to make it happen.

  • When i click on the webcam, it says device is not found. it is in my add/remove section.

My webcam was showing a black screen when I would try to use it (it's integrated).  So I checked out some forums and ended up disabling it and now it has disappeard.  I have the icon, but it says that there is no device.  It shows up in my add/remove.  I have uninstalled and installed multiple times.  I have tried to repair it.  I think I am missing an image driver.  Nothing installs successfully.

Very strange, it is more secure to be a driver problem, try to find the latest version but not from the HP website but for the hardware ID from the manufacturer's website. Also check the power options, the system may "turn off" the webcam to save energy.

  • Updated to Mavericks OS X but can't use my external drive by WD My Passport. The Mac reads it but I can't add/remove files to the external drive. Help?!

Updated to Mavericks OS X but can't use my external drive by WD My Passport. The Mac reads it but I can't add/remove files to the external drive. Help?!
The WD My Passport, I purchased back in early December 2013 & I just used it the other day after I updated my Macbook... & of course it says in the online manual it works for Mac Lion, Mountain Lion, Snow Leopard but not this new Maverick update. Is there anything I can do?

I like the free demo of SuperDuper to make clones. It's free, Tiger and Leopard ready and is easy to use. If you buy the full version you can do incremental backups.
You should use Disk Utility to do a Disk Repair, as shown in this link, booted up on your install disk, before you make a clone of it.
I then partition my external disk, in Disk Utility, with a partition that is the same size , actually a tad bigger, as my system disk. I then use SuperDuper to clone my system disk over to that partition.
With a clone on an external FireWire drive (USB drives are not bootable on some Macs) you can bootup on it to do your repairs or just run your Mac anytime you have trouble with your main drive. Be careful, there are a few external FireWire drives out there that are not bootable on Macs. Check the drive's manual to be sure.

  • CS4 No longer in Add/Remove Programs

I installed CS4 Master Collection on my computer and had a lot of problems with it, so I decided to wipe it from my system and start over. This wasn't happening for me as it said the software was damaged.
I did a bit of research online and found that I could install a file from Adobe called CleanUp, which seemed to work at first, so I checked into the Add/Remove Programs to see if it was still installed. It was in the list, so I thought Adobe CleanUp didn't work so I tried again to uninstall from Add/Remove programs - It just popped up a message saying the software may have been already uninstalled, would I like to remove it from the Add/Remove Programs list, so I selected Yes.
But after a final check to see if CS4 really had gone, I went into the directory I first installed CS4 to, the files were still there (note: I have a custom install folder other than C:\Program Files, I save software installations to D:\Programs as my HD is partitioned and I use Vista which takes up a lot of space and the C:\ drive hardly has any to begin with, I know I know, but it came like that from the manufacturer).
So now, I can't uninstall CS4, manually or through Add/Remove Programs. I even tried to install CS4 again to see if it would just write over the current installation, but that wasn't happening for me. If anyone has any ideas or advice what I can do, that'd be great. If there is absolutely no way I can remove it, would deleting the CS4 folder cause any problems, especially as I reverted back to CS2 (the only other CS version I have right now).
    - DawnDesigner

It's a really mix to remove the CS4, in my personal opinion you probably have two options.
    1. to try to install the suite again a remove it
    2. to manually remove the folder where you install the software and through register remove from the list of add/remove software the unusable entrance for Adobe CS4
    a) run the utility regedit.exe
    b) if I'm not in a mistake it should be localized in HKLM\Software\Microsoft\windows\curren version\uninstall\
b.1) look arround the name that appear in the hives and just remove such which will be for the adobe CS4
    Take a look also in
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/247501 and http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314481
But first than all I recommend try to install again the suite a remove it.
by the way I hope your experience with Clean Script does not turn in a nightmare like in my case, which after running it, some links to re reference got damage as the help of MS office does not work anymore because xml files is not related to the right program or the starting of software like Windows Defender.
    Good Luck

    Hi peahen,
Most toolbars are just add-ons. I would try going to ''Tools >Add-ons>Extension'' and removing it from there. You might need to restart Firefox afterwards, but that should be all it takes.

    Emma, welcome to the forum.
You can go into Control Panel / Programs and Features / Turn Windows features on or off (In the left column).  Uncheck Internet Explorer 11 and click OK.  This will uninstall it.  You can uninstall of install all of Windows features from there.

i haven't any Access to HP for Buy recovery disk or Call Support.
    Thanks

I don't know why your PC is saying your partition is gone - you're right, it doesn't look gone. I do know that if you use the Support Assistant to make backup copies of your Recovery Disks and Then instruct it to remove the recovery partition to give you more space on the hard drive, it will delete the HP factory image of Windows 8 from the recovery partition and leave the normal Windows repair tools behind.
There are tools however that allow you to create your own recovery partition complete with these Windows repair tools and a new image of your instalation so you can restore from that. You could use this tool: Windows 7/8 - OEM Recovery Partition Creator found here: http://forums.mydigitallife.info/threads/21978-Windows-7-8-OEM-Recovery-Partition-Creator but thats a lot of work and it would be faster and easier just to backup your data and restore from your HP recovery disks you made from Support Assistant. If you didn't make the disks, HP may opt to send you a copy.. they do not normally do this but I have read that some people have good luck getting a free copy of the media from HP.. otherwise they want you to buy the recovery disks ($40.00) . I suppose it depends on the exact circunstances of your situation.
Another solution is to use Macrium Reflect Free Edition to ghost or clone your system. You can then restore your whole system even with your custom programs installed, to the exact state it was in when you made the backup image. ( this may take several dvd's) I suggest you go this route because restoring your system with Macrium Reflect is Much faster than restoring from the HP Recovery Disks. Even if you do obtain another copy of the Recovery Disks, you should use this tool to make another backup that you can customize to your liking. Your re-installs will be faster, they will already have your chosen software installed, and you will save wear and tear on your HP Recovery Disks.  You can then safely delete the recovery partition to gain back that space on your hard drive (since you cannot access it anyway, you won't need that space being taken up).  BUT.. you cannot restore from UEFI Mode which is what HP ships with. You have to go into your Bios settings, and switch to Legacy Bios mode, (which disables Secure Boot) FIRST or else the Macruim recovery boot disk will not load to install the recovery image. After the system re-installs you can go back into bios settings and disable Legacy bios and re-enable secure Boot if you like. ( Windows 8 will load in both UEFI mode with secure boot enabled or Legacy bios mode.. it's your choice. UEFI mode will load faster but it will cause problems if you want to dual boot the system with another OS)  Hope this helps.

  • Firefox is not available in C:\Program Files and in Add/Remove Programs

I am trying to run an Oracle application which is currently installed in one of our user's PCs, but when we try to generate a report it would fail to do so as Mozilla Firefox is installed on the system and I believe it is set as the default browser. I tried to uninstall it as it is not required anymore, but to my shock I didn't find it in Add\Remove Programs list and also not in C:\Program Files. I tried installed Windows Clean-Up utility, but the application doesn't exist there either. I want to remove Mozilla completely, can someone please help?!! By the way, I also deleted the Mozilla files under the Application Data of all user accounts on that machine; still no luck.

I believe that it's a good idea to leave them be JUST in case they installed a dependency that a new application is using.
This isn't exactly likely but it could happen.
When I'm uninstalling applications I use a tool called
Revo Uninstaller  which finds files and registry entries that applications might leave behind.
Will your machine explode and Windows stop booting? Probably not.
Are these left-over files destroying your Hard Drive capacity? Again, Probably not.
Basically, I can't think of much of a reason to delete them so I think it's decent to leave them just in case, but again it probably wont do any damage. Running an third-party application like
CCleaner is also good practice and could likely delete some of the unwanted/unneeded files and crud like that.
Also, most application settings are usually present in the C:\Users\UserAccount\Application Data\ and not in the Program Files or Program Data.
    Goodluck bud,
Any questions or concerns feel free to let me know.
