Partitioning w/out Losing Data on External HDD
Hello All,
I have a WD My Studio External HDD of 500GB. It contains invaluable data, however I need to temporarily create a bootable partition. The main goal is NOT to lose any data. Is this feasible through Disk Utility? Many thanks!
If the data is truly invaluable as you say, the chances for data while small are probably too large to take a chance. Since drive are relatively cheap, get another one for this project and don't take a chance.

Adding more space on a partitioned drive without losing data
I have just partitioned my harddrive to put Windows XP on it ... but I underestimated how much space I needed. Is there any way to add more space on this partition with out losing any of the data on it? I tried using iPartition, but it's not free.
Any ideas?
ThanksNo. You can only manage a Boot Camp partition with Boot Camp Assistant. Unfortunately, Boot Camp Assistant does not have a facility for resizing a partition. You would first have to remove it, then repartition to the desired larger size. Of course everything will be lost on the partition. You can use a Windows backup utility to backup your files then restore them after you reinstall Windows on the larger partition.
If you were to use a utility like iPartition (and I don't know if it will re-size the Boot Camp partition) you may find that you can no longer remove the partition with Boot Camp. -
MIGRATING DATA FROM EXTERNAL HDD (PC FILES) TO NEW MBP
I am new to Mac and am in need of migrating all files from my old PC to my new MBP. All my files are on an external HDD, since I am no longer in possession of the PC. Is there a quick and easy way to migrate all my files over? When I use the migration assistant, it is not recognizing my HDD; however, I do see my HDD under 'Devices,' where I can drag and drop files to my MAC. Needless to say, that may take forever to do. I would appreciate some assistance. Thanks in advance!

Deleted data on external HDD after upgrading to Mavericks
Hello everyone,
I have a Mac Mini 2011 with Lion Montain and two external drives, one 500GB and the other is a 4TB WD mybook, both Firewire.
I have updated the system at Mavericks, everything went ok all the disks were visible and everything worked perfectly.
I regularly off the MAC (the firewire drives go out on their own), the next day when I restarted the MAC I was surprised to see both disks completely EMPTY, as if they were formatted.
I made a disc scan with Data Rescue 3, the data are present and recoverable but are clearly reconstruct the entire folder structure with a huge job.
Do you know what happened and if there is an alternative solution to recover data?
Thanks in advance for your answers.

How to recover the userid and password with out losing data in c drive
Hi, i have ibm server and installed windows server 2008 r2 standard. i forgot the userid and password for login so i used the password crack tool after that try to login but it shows " The login credentials are in correct" so how to login to
system and get the c drive data safely with out loose.Hi,
According to your description, I assume you have forgotten the administrator’s password. If you have another administrator account, you can use it to reset the password.
If you don’t have another administrator account, then there is no Microsoft recommended way to reset passwords due to security considerations.

Recovery Disk wiped out all external HDD data.
On my western digital 1TB HDD, I have created a drive with name I: of size 20GB to take recovery partition. When start with Create Recovery disk and selected drive I:, it creates recovery partition backup however it wiped all other drives data of external
HDD. Now, what should I do to recover?? Can Microsoft help to get my 200 GBs data back due to its big bug??
Thanks & Regards, Ankur MuthaIt tells you that it's going to delete
all the data on that disk, in quite plain terms.
If your data is irreplaceable, chances are most of it is still there. There are commercial data recovery services that may be able to help you get it back, but they cost a good bit of money. Search for "disk drive data recovery" with
Google or Bing.
I suggest not trying to access the drive yourself as the more you do with it the more likely the sectors containing deleted data may be overwritten.
Good luck.

Hi,
My question relates to the use of Time Machine for two different Macs ... I have two Macs: a MacBook Pro (ML) and an iMac (SL). I use Time Machine for both.
Unfortunately, the external HDD (A) drive I use for the backup of my MacBook Pro is on the way out. I am now in a situation where I need to copy this Time Machine backup to another external HDD (B) which I use for the backup of my iMac.
I have decided that I would like to use external HDD B for all future backups of both machines from now on. It is a 2Tb LaCie drive with one partition. Therefore, I would like to copy the Time Machine backup data from external HDD A to external HDD B. Since both TM files/directories have identical names, I am looking for some advice of how to do this without 'deactivating' any of the backups or corrupting them, or screwing with permissions.
In case this is known to be problemmatic, would it be 'better practice' to partition the external 2Tb HDD drive into two partitions, then just use one partition for each backup? Is there an advantage/disadvantage to partitioning the drive? Will this approach make it 'less confusing for Time Machine' and reduce potential problems?
Any advice would be great!
Thanks,
Mark.Don't bother trying to copy a TM backup file. Just connect the other good drive to your MBP and create a new full TM backup on that drive. I do suggest you create a separate partition on that good drive for each Mac you will be backing up to it.

Can I change partition size of external HD without losing Data
I have an external HD that I use one partition for backup and use another partition for Time Machine. I need to change the sizes, need more on my backup. Can I change partition size of external HD without losing Data? I just changed from a Powermac G4 using Leopard to a Macbook Pro with Lion, so I am also thinkin in getting everything set up, format the Time Machine with the old stuff and make a new Time Machine.
The Disk Utility can't change the starting point of a partition without erasing it and the data on it.

How to recover data from an External HDD partition crash?

General File Recovery
If you stop using the drive it's possible to recover deleted files that have not been overwritten by using recovery software such as MAC Data Recovery, Data Rescue II, File Salvage or TechTool Pro. Each of the preceding come on bootable CDs to enable usage without risk of writing more data to the hard drive. Two free alternatives are Disk Drill and TestDisk. Look for them and demos at MacUpdate or CNET Downloads. Recovery software usually provide trial versions that enable you to determine if the software would help before actually paying for it. Beyond this or if the drive has completely failed, then you would need to send the drive to a recovery service which is very expensive.
The longer the hard drive remains in use and data are written to it, the greater the risk your deleted files will be overwritten.
