Partitioning went wront, lost 32GB on my HDD

Hi,
Today I tried using Boot Camp assistent to partition my HDD on my iMac. During this process I got a Kernel Panic. The partitioning went wrong, and now I lost 32GB of my HDD space. Any idea how I can get it back?
In Boot Camp assistent I can't recover it and also Disk Utility is not able to see the partition. I also used Disk Inventory X to check where the 32GB are, but it can't find it... Anyone? Please?

You know, every day there is probably at least one or more that have the same situation.
Short answer: backup, you should have done so before beginning, I think that is spelled out in the pdf with BootCamp (it was with the Betas from last year). Because you likely need to use Disk Utility: Partition: to set it from "current" to one volume.
BootCamp Assistant tries to find a single unfragmented free chunk of space, in your case, that would be 32GB. After a failure, highly probably there won't be 32GB now that is free and unfragmented.
Drives that originally were formatted with Tiger and upgraded to Leopard more often have kernel panics but may be other reasons as well.
Leopard format seems to resize and divide better. Every new OS version does have underlying changes to partition map and tables.
I would install OS X to an external drive, a smallish partition, and use the rest of the drive for a 2nd backup partition, so you can boot from that, rather than use the DVD Leopard or your system came with.
What you didn't want to hear? but the "long road" is sometimes the shortest distance from A to B.

Time machine should have a good copy - how are you determining that it is corrupt
If you want the thumbnails as photos right click on the iPhoto library and make a copy of the data folder and then import it into a new iPhoto library - it contains your thumbnails

I installed Windows 7 (64 bit)  on it. The OEM partition was half the size of the hdd 465,76 GB. Everything is good it is a small OEM partition, but there is already too much . Can i delete it without consequences? And there does not store any important hiden files?

    Hi Devidas,
I would suggest not deleting the OEM partition, as it contains system hidden files

  • RAID1 Partitions disappeared when one of the mirrored HDD is used as an external drive for data rescue.

Hi, I have mirrored build of two identical 1TB HDD in my Xserve Late 2006 (RAID 1) in Bay 2 and Bay3. When I took one HDD out and connected it as an external drive to my MacBook Pro, only the first partition appeared. That is, for instance, I have RAID partition A1, A2, A3 in Xserve but only A1 appears when the drive is connected to MacBook Pro as an external drive. Is there any way to let partition A2, A3 appear too? Thanks.

Oh, I didn't realise you were using the hardware RAID card for this. In that case, yes, that makes sense, you won't see the other partitions because they're handled by the RAID card. I admit I'd never tried it with a RAID 1 mirror where you might expect to - I've only used RAID 5 on the hardware cards where there's no expectation, of course, to pull a drive to relocate the data.
So you may ask why not just use a single partition for my RAID1 design. The reason is that I prefer to partition HDD because it is good for HDD lifespan. I don't like to design my parition schema to be just a single big parition with 1T Hard Drive since all data are going to be stored scattered and hence, taking longer for spindle reading.
I don't agree with most of this statement. I've not seen anything that indicates partitioning improves lifespan - for any given data, the disk spins the exact same number of times, and the heads move the same number of times, regardless of the partitioning - partitioning is only a logical, not a physical, construct.
As for the data being scattered and spindle latency, that's nowhere near the problem it used to be in the past thanks to faster spindles and larger caches. In addition, Mac OS X uses a dynamic reallocation/fragmentation system that automatically (re)allocates files as they're used, meaning you don't have the level of fragmentation that you used to have.
The primary benefit of partitioning is to restrict file system sizes so that you don't get a runaway proceess filling up the entire disk. Even that is less of a problem - when an 8GB drive was large it didn't take much to fill it, but you'd have to have a pretty rampant process to fill up a 1TB drive before alarms started ringing.

  • Hard disk Partition is suddenly lost

I am using T500 with Windows 7 installed on it.
Facing the issue of all the partitions except C: getting lost suddenly along with all the data. This is happening the second time in a week. I cannot see the partitions in the explorer and even the disk management utility shows everything apart from C: as free space.
Any help on why this is happening would be appreciated. It is frustrating as I not only lose my data but have to spend valuable time to restore my environ for further work.

    Hi there,
Welcome to the HP Support Forums! It is a great place to find the help you need, both from other users, HP experts and other support personnel.
I understand that your hard drive is not showing up, presumably as a bootable partition. I am happy to help, but I need a bit more clarification of your problem. You mention a 0x00000116 error as well, which is normally part of a Blue Screen of Death. Does this happen regularly as well, or is that the real complaint, that you are getting the 0x code and a BLue Screen on startup?
That particular code is generally associated with a video driver problem.
Is the hard drive you are trying to install to, a new replacement hard drive or the original hard drive?
If you try to boot up the system, what error do you see?
Are there any repeating flashing LED patterns, or beeping patterns?
Assuming this is your original installed hard drive, did you try the recovery manager for the drive?

  • How to delete the hidden partition (about 35 GB) on my H430 HDD?

    Hello dear sirs/madams
I want to delete the hidden partition in my H430 desktop. It came with DOS. I am unable to use OneKey Recovery after the reseller installed Windows 7 Ultimate x32. And it is showing the hard disk capacity is 465 GB in my 500 GB HDD. I googled and found that it has a hidden partition. I am unable to delete it using diskpart because it doesn't show the partition. Here's the screenshot of diskpart.

Please tell me if I can still use OneKey Recovery.
Please guide me. I am using Windows 8 Pro x64.

  • Partitioning w/out Losing Data on External HDD

    Hello All,
I have a WD My Studio External HDD of 500GB. It contains invaluable data, however I need to temporarily create a bootable partition. The main goal is NOT to lose any data. Is this feasible through Disk Utility? Many thanks!

If the data is truly invaluable as you say, the chances for data while small are probably too large to take a chance. Since drive are relatively cheap, get another one for this project and don't take a chance.

  • Windows 7 installation went wrong - lost Mac OS X?

    Hello,
PLEASE BE PATIENT AND READ WHOLE TEXT.
I went through the windows 7 installation process and i installed windows but unfortunately i can't find my mac os x anymore!
When i restart and press option key button black screen appears that lasts for 30 seconds (it appears too without pressing).
I guess that's for choosing the os but there is no any os there! No windows, no mac os x!
Just black screen for 30 minutes, then Windows starts up!
When i enter startup and recovery options in windows advanced system settings and look at the table: Choose default OS and click to change to MAC OS X, there is only Windows in it!
But the time while choosing the os is set to 30 sec, which is equal to the time of black screen that appears after turning on/restarting my Macbook Air.
When i look at my windows disk C memory it is just as i made with partition! 20 for Windows 7 OS and 26 (or close to it) free in diskc C
That means my 68 gbs (i left 41 gbs free for mac, and the rest was already used)  are gone somewhere.
I followed installation guide and instructions very carefully.
I did partionining properly and didn't cancel anything!
After restart i chose disk for installing windows just like Boot Camp guide told me!
Can someone help me to find my Mac OS X or to somehow "factory reset" my Macbook Air!?
    Kind Regards,

    Hello,
    Solved.
Was pressing the wrong key during the start up. XDDD

  • How much shall i partition macbook drive? 32gb option query......

hi, i plan to use bootcamp and windows xp.
the 32gb partition option, does this mean when i install apps into windows xp, i have a limit of 32gb??? or can i install programmes say up to 100gb????
my programme files folder in my pc is way over 50gb.
would i need to partition my mac drive to half half?
i have 250gb internal macbook drive.
basically i want to be able to install apps and data to use in windows xp apps, which would amount to well over 50gb.
what does the 32gb partition actually mean??? is this just for windows system files?? or for ALL things windows, eg, my documents, apps data etc.
    thankyou.

You can leave a small minimum for OS X which can always be booted from USB or Firewire. And use external drive for additional space, but once set, you are sort of stuck with that without doing backups and restore.
WinClone can image Windows for restore back if needed.
    http://www.twocanoes.com
Apple Disk Utility -> Restore can copy OS X to/from another drive also.
Too often people underestimate how much space they need.
And if you want to use NTFS, you will need to delete + create FAT volume or use convert command.
The only reason for 32GB was PC Windows, there is no reason to use it today on Mac or any other size, make it what you want and need, as long as there is free unfragmented space. If you perform installs and updates on OS X, then files will get moved into that free space just from unpacking and installing. The only way to reclaim that space is through backup and restore or 3rd party program like iDefrag.
BootCamp Assistant Setup "offers" splitting a drive in half but you can drag it to any size configuration.

  • K330 - Crashed hard disk - service partition and drivers lost

My 1 TB hard disk (D: drive) has crashed (after only half a year of operation ....).
This harddisk did have the LENOVO partition with OKR and all drivers.
From my supplier I got a new hard disk, but how to get OKR (using the F2 key) working again???!!
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks.

As you need information regarding to use the OneKey Recovery feature in the new hard drive, I need to share with you that if you have replaced the existing hard drive in the service centre, and if  the service representative had done re-imaging the new hard drive as similar with shipped hard drive then you would able to use the OneKey Recovery feature.
    Thanks & Regards,
    Sameer

  • Lost pictures from external HDD

    Hello,
I created a new iPhoto Library on an external HDD. I had about 16 GB of photos there. I found the library blank (0 bytes) today. When I am trying to open the location from iPhoto nothing happens.
I have Maverick 10.9.2, iPhoto 9.5.1, the external HDD is ExFAT formatted.
I tried to use the Disc Utility to repair the disc, it appeared to be OK. I tried to rebuild iPhoto previews (cmd*alt at iPhoto start) and it did not help.
Could you give me any advice, please?
    Regards
    Frank

I have Maverick 10.9.2, iPhoto 9.5.1, the external HDD is ExFAT formatted.
ExFAT is your problem. iPhoto requires the iPhoto Library to be on a drive formatted MacOS Extended (Journaled).
See these documents:  iPhoto: Issues with FAT32-formatted drives
and Format external drives to Mac OS Extended before using with Aperture(or iPhoto)
I created a new iPhoto Library on an external HDD. I had about 16 GB of photos there. I found the library blank (0 bytes) today. When I am trying to open the location from iPhoto nothing happens.
What probably has happened is, that you created the library on that drive, but iPhoto could not write to it and wrote the image files to a temporary storage.   Check, if iPhoto created a new library in your Pictures folder instead. Did you reboot your Mac, since you imported the photos? If not, wait, unti you have checked the Caches and temporary directories, before you restart your mac, because that will erase any temporary files.

  • How to recover lost files on external HDD

Hello all, I gave my external HDD (G Drive, I bought it from the app store), as far as I see the model ist something like - HDST HTS 5410, to a friend and the dumm *** deleted all my old files (movies, fotos) and put new ones. So my question is how to restore/recovery if possible. Thank you and really hope there is a chance.

    General File Recovery
If you stop using the drive it's possible to recover deleted files that have not been overwritten by using recovery software such as MAC Data Recovery, Data Rescue II, File Salvage or TechTool Pro.  Each of the preceding come on bootable CDs to enable usage without risk of writing more data to the hard drive.  Two free alternatives are Disk Drill and TestDisk.  Look for them and demos at MacUpdate or CNET Downloads. Recovery software usually provide trial versions that enable you to determine if the software would help before actually paying for it. Beyond this or if the drive has completely failed, then you would need to send the drive to a recovery service which is very expensive.
The longer the hard drive remains in use and data are written to it, the greater the risk your deleted files will be overwritten.
Also visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on Data Recovery.
Your files were most likely overwritten, so don't expect too much success at recovering them.

  • How should I partition my server? There's 3 hdds.

Finally getting a server setup from an old amd sempron 2ghz 1.5ghz ram computer.  There's three hard drives in it, 10gb, 20 or 40gb and a 250gb.  Should I make the 10gb my / partition, the 20/40gb my /home and the 250gb the /var or what?

Well for starters, what are you going to use this server for?
Personally, I'd create an LVM Logical Group from the 10 and 20/40gb drives and use them for the system with the following mount points:
    4gb /
    2gb /var
    2gb /tmp
    4gb /usr
    128mb /boot
Then a second LVM Logical Group with just the 250gb drive and use that to create your /home, /data, /srv, /whatever

  • Not enough space on new 16gb 4S to restore my backup from my lost 32gb 4S

So here is the issue.  I had a 32GB iPhone 4S.  It was stolen but I have it backed up on my computer.  I could only afford to replace it with a 16GB iPhone 4S.  When I go to restore my new phone from the backup I get the error message that there isnt enough space on my iPhone to restore the backup.  I understand this because my 32GB was almost full but it was mostly music and pictures.  I dont care about all that I just need everything else.  The contacts, texts, saved app info, email.  All the stuff that doesnt take up much space.  Is there any way this can be done?  I wish it would let you just restore a partial backup.  I am overseas and there are no apple stores where I am.  Thanks.

Make a copy of your existing backup & put it in a folder on your desktop for safe keeping. Then get this:
    http://www.icopybot.com/itunes-backup-manager.htm
Edit your existing backup & see if you can then restore such to your new phone. Be careful, one screw-up & you'll render the entire backup unusable...that's why you make a copy first.
    Good luck.
